Day 5 Alt. Prompt - Waiting Room
Angst, waiting room, hospital setting, critical condition, anticipated character death [does not occur], surgery mention
[Directly follows Missed Call]
They still had deer blood on their hands. It had long gone tacky beneath their nails, and the dried spatters up their forearms flaked like rust. They didn’t want to risk leaving to find the bathroom to wash it off.
Liza tapped their shoulder, her own bloodshot eyes meeting RJ’s. She was holding a handkerchief out to them.
“Thanks.” They didn’t have the energy to force the higher pitch they normally used when talking to Liza. Their voice was ragged even though they hadn’t cried. Not yet.
“He’ll pull through.” Her breathing was shaky, manicured hands clutching her purse. The string of pearls around her neck could buy a small island in Greece. “He’s a trooper. You know how he is, stubborn. Like you.”
RJ nodded numbly, wiping the worst of the blood from their hands. It was a pity to stain Liza’s soft silk scarf such a dark shade of red.
A doctor approached, pace brisk and comfortable shoes soft against the tiled floor. RJ sat up straighter, face schooled to attentive concern. But the doctor walked past them, addressing an old woman who also sat in the waiting room. Liza’s shaky smile didn’t offer much comfort.
“He might be in surgery for a few more hours. Or less.” Less meant he died. More was better. It meant they thought he was worth the time to try.
A yawn escaped her red lips, even her refined manners a slave to exhaustion. She had flown in from Spain - private jet, courtesy of her current lover - but it was clear she hadn’t had the luxury of sleep last night.
“Rest. I’ll wake you if there’s news.” RJ’s voice was tight but they managed to speak. It took a lot of practice to speak even when they were upset. Liza had helped them learn how to years ago. She smiled softly at them, eyes still damp as she kicked off her heels and tucked her legs up onto the hospital chair.
“Thank you, RJ.” She stretched, adjusting her tight fitting dress to remain modest as she laid her head on their shoulder. Her hair smelled like the same conditioner Ghost used when his hair had been longer.
The voices over the PA were slurred as time passed, no news from the operating room. A nurse handed RJ a warm cup of coffee. They thanked him but didn’t drink. They hated coffee, but Ghost loved it. It smelled like him. Like home.
Their shoulders began to cramp, but they didn’t move. Liza dozed in and out of consciousness, breathing steady. Only the twitch of the crows feet at her eyes indicated when she was listening to the same monotonous announcements and calls from the PA system as RJ.
Still tightly wound in by their anxiety, they immediately noticed the surgeon - the way he walked, the tiredness in his eyes, the mask that dangled from one ear and the freshly changed scrubs. They sat up straight, Liza shaking herself awake.
His eyes were too tired to pick up emotion from. And the seconds between noticing him walk across the waiting room and him speaking took centuries.
“He’s still in critical condition, but…” The rest of his words were lost on RJ. They couldn’t stop their tears, and didn’t push Liza away as she wrapped her arms around them and held them close.
Ghost was alive.
For now.

It's Not That Hot Today
@mediwhumpmay  4; pain @themerrywhumpofmay  4; chess pieces, stubborn Fandom: Transformers Rating: E Warnings: None
It's a hot day in D.C., A day when staying hydrated is important. Lily chooses to drink hot tea as she does every morning and puts her stainless steel water bottle in her bag as she leaves the house.
She and Sunstreaker go to the training room for a little workout. The forty-five-minute workout is enough for anyone to need to drink water, but Lily goes right to the female shower room, and Sunstreaker doesn't think he needs to worry. The two go their separate ways until dinner.
Lily meets her friend, Veronica, at the park, a short walk from the base. The two knew there'd be tables under the shade of a large oak tree. "Let's see how many chess games we can play before we lose the shade," Veronica comments.
The two get through three games in ninety minutes. It's one-thirty. By now, Lily is dealing with a dry mouth. Veronica doesn't know that she hasn't had any water today. Lily ignores the early signs of dehydration. Not wanting to ruin the short time the two have until they lose the shade.   By the time they start losing shade, Lily's headache is hard to ignore. Veronica decides to head home rather than to the base. "How strange you're calling me," Sunstreaker says. "Lily seems off. Like not her usual self off." Sunstreaker sighs, "I was trying not to worry, but I suspected she hasn't had much water. I'll deal with it."
Sunstreaker finds Lily's water bottle in the mini-fridge in their room. "Lily," he sighs in frustration. Sunstreaker: Ratchet, I might be bringing Lily to the medbay for treatment for dehydration. Sunstreaker goes downstairs to wait.
When Lily reaches the gate, her headache is pounding, and she's dizzy and can't deal with the bright sunlight. "Ma'am, are you ok?" "Just open the gate," Lily mumbles. The two guards know Lily enough to know something is wrong. They let her in.
Sunstreaker watches Lily walk into the building carrying a chessboard. Right away, he sees she's not doing well. Seconds pass before he watches her fall, chess pieces flying everywhere once the box hits the floor and opens. "Lily!" Sunstreaker doesn't know a soldier also saw Lily go down and is getting Ratchet. He holds Lily, horrified she's not waking up as the seconds pass. Even Jolt and Ratchet are concerned that Lily is unconscious. They hate telling Sunstreaker to stay out of the medbay for now.   Lightning walks down one of the hallways, seeing the situation. Rushing to support Sunstreaker. She skips asking what happened and takes her to the conference room by the medbay, knowing Sunstreaker won't want to go far and it'll be private.
"How the frag did she ignore dehydration this long?" Jolt asks, looking at Lily's vitals. "Um, I know she's in critical condition, but remember Sunstreaker's anxiety issue?" Jasmine asks. "Go ahead; we're almost done doing all we can to help her," Ratchet tells her.
As Jasmine thought, Sideswipe knows what's happening and struggles to support his brother. "I don't know if he knows how bad dehydration can get, but he's thinking Lily is dying," Lightning explains, "that's when Sideswipe rushed in. I'd get my brother, Drift, and Jamie, but I don't think more friends around will help him. I'm worried about his anxiety."
Jolt and Ratchet decide to let Sunstreaker see Lily, though her vitals are still not in a good place which will frighten him. Add how she's still unconscious. They are worried it's been thirty minutes.
Sunstreaker hates what he's seeing, that he's only aware of Jolt and Ratchet's tight grip on him until he sits on the chair by the bed. Jolt and Ratchet tell Sunstreaker the infusion will be done in fifteen minutes, which will help Lily's dehydration. "I should have ensured she was drinking water no matter how annoyed she'd be," Sunstreaker sighs. "I'm not liking how she didn't drink water," Ratchet adds, "she'll be getting a lecture from me once she's ready to be discharged." The medics leave the room as Sunstreaker sees Lily's concerning vitals on the monitor.
Sunstreaker is relieved he doesn't have to wait long for Lily to wake up. Lily sees a stay tear roll down his face. "Do you have any idea how much you scared me?" Sunstreaker asks, failing to sound pissed, "how many times do I tell you that I'm used to this? My life requires acting tough, and you can't act like this. Look what happened. I felt like I was watching you die." By now, Sunstreaker is crying. Lily feels well enough to sit up and hug him. Sunstreaker hates how this continues to be a problem. Uncertain if he can do anything. Worried one day, Lily will try to hide a serious injury that's not as easy to deal with compared to severe dehydration.
Lily is kept in the medbay overnight and needed two infusions. Ratchet lectures Lily before she and Sunstreaker leave. The two go to the cafeteria for breakfast. Sunstreaker is terrified to see Lily in the medbay again like yesterday but doesn't want to be strict. Lily can tell Sunstreaker is worried but still gets hot tea. She brings her water bottle when the two workout, hating how much she terrified Sunstreaker. Knowing there's no easy fix.

Please, if you can, take a moment to read and share this because I feel like I'm screaming underwater.
NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder) stigma is rampant right now, and seems to be getting progressively worse. Everyone is using it as a buzzword in the worst ways possible, spreading misinformation and hatred against a real disorder.
I could go on a long time about how this happened, why it's factually incorrect (and what the disorder actually IS), why it's harmful, and the changes I'd like to see. But to keep this concise, I'll simply link to a few posts under the cut for further reading.
The point of this post is a plea. Please help stop the spread of stigma. Even in mental health communities, even around others with personality disorders, in neurodivergent "safe" spaces, other communities I thought people would be supportive in (e.g. trans support groups, progressive spaces in general), it keeps coming up. So I'm willing to bet that a lot of people on this site need to see this.
Because it's so hard to exist in this world.
My disorder already makes me feel as if I'm worthless and unlovable, like there's something inherently wrong and damaged about me. And it's so much harder to fight that and heal when my daily life consists of:
Laughing and spending time with my friends, doing my utmost best to connect and stay present and focused on them, trying to let my guards down and be real and believe I'm lovable- when suddenly they throw out the word "narcissist" to describe horrible people or someone they hate, or the conversation turns to how evil "people with narcissistic personality disorder" are. (Seriously, you don't know which of your friends might have NPD and feels like shit when you say those things & now knows that you'd hate them if you knew.)
Trying to look up "mental health positivity for people with npd", "mental health positivity cluster bs", only to find a) none of that, and b) more of the same old vile shit that makes me feel terrible about myself.
Having a hard time (which is constant at this point) and trying to look up resources for myself, only to again, find the same stigma. And no resources.
Not having any clue how to help myself, because even the mental health field is spitting so much vitriol at people with DISORDERS (who they're supposed to be helping!) that there's no solid research or therapy programs for people like me.
Losing close friends when they find out, despite us having had a good relationship before, and them KNOWING me and knowing that I'm not like the trending image of pwNPD. Because now they only see me through the lens of stigma and misinformation.
Hearing the same stigma come up literally wherever I go. Clubs. Meetings. Any online space. At the bus stop. At the mall. At a restaurant. At work. Buzzword of the year that everyone loooves loudly throwing around with their friends or over the phone. Feels awesome for me, makes my day so much better/s
I could go on for a long time, but I'm scared no one will read/rb this if it gets too much longer.
So please. Stop using the word "narcissist" as a synonym for "abusive".
Stop bringing up people you hate who you believe to have NPD because of a stigmatizing article full of misinformation whenever someone with actual NPD opens their mouth. (Imagine if people did that with any other disorder! "Hey, I'm autistic." "Oh... my old roommate screamed at me whenever I made noise around him, and didn't understand my needs, which seems like sensory overload and difficulty with social cues. He was definitely autistic. But as long as you're self-aware and always restraining your innate desire to be an abusive asshole, you're okay I guess, maybe." ...See how offensive and ignorant that is?)
Stop preventing healthcare for people with a disorder just because it's trendy to use us as a scapegoat.
If you got this far, thank you for reading, and please share this if you can. Further reading is under the cut.
NPD Criteria, re-written by someone who actually has NPD
Stigma in the DSM
Common perception of the DSM criteria vs how someone may actually experience them (Keep in mind that this is the way I personally experience these symptoms, and that presentation can vary a lot between individuals)
"Idk, the stigma is right though, because I've known a lot of people with NPD who are jerks, so I'm going to continue to support the blockage of treatment for this condition."
(All of these were written by me, because I didn't want to link to other folks' posts without permission, but if you want to add your own links in reblogs or replies please feel free <3)
#actuallynpd#signal boost#actuallyautistic#mental health awareness#narcissistic personality disorder#people also need to realize that mental health professionals aren't immune from bias#(it really shouldn't come as a shock that the mental health field has a longstanding pattern of misunderstanding and mistreating ppl who ar#mentally ill or otherwise ND)#the first therapist i brought up NPD to like. literally pulled out the DSM bc she could barely remember the criteria. then said that there'#no way I have it because I have low self-esteem lmaoooooo#anyway throwback to being at work and chatting with a co-worker. and the conversation turning to mental health. and him saying that#he tries to stay informed and be aware and supportive of mental health conditions & that he doesn't want to be ignorant or spread harmful#misinformation. and then i mentioned that i do a lot of research into mental health stuff and i listed a bunch of things. which included#several personality disorders. one of which was NPD.#and after listening to my whole ass list he zeroed in on the NPD and immediately started talking about how narcissists are abusive and#he knew someone who had NPD and how the person who had it had an addiction and died from the addiction in a horrible way and he#was glad he did#fun times#or when i decided to be vulnerable and talk abt my self-criticism/self-hatred bc i knew my friends also struggled w that and i wanted to#support them by sharing my own coping methods. and they both(separately!) started picking and prodding at my npd through the lens of stigma#bc i'd recently opened up to them abt having it. they recognized self-hatred as a symptom and still jumped on me for it. despite me#trying to share hurt vulnerable parts of myself to help them and connect with them.#again..... fun times

Three men were shot and hospitalized, one in critical condition, after a shooting in North Hollywood early Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. in the 11000 block of Huston Street, located off Lankershim Blvd.
Preliminary reports suggest that the shooting took place in front of a hookah lounge, although it is not yet confirmed whether the lounge was open or not at the time of the incident. The police have not yet released any information regarding the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting.
The victims were transported to a nearby hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention. One of the victims is reported to be in critical condition, while the other two are said to be in stable condition.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and the police are currently investigating the incident. They are urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward and assist in their investigation.
This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing issue of gun violence in the United States, and the need for effective measures to address this problem. It also highlights the importance of community members being vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity to law enforcement authorities.

Found, but Is It Too Late?
Author: Autobot2001 genre: Fanfiction Fandom; Transformers Rating: T Warning: Brief talk of suicide Pairing: None Description: A Soldier's cry for help worries the medics. The condition of the person the soldier brought to them concerns the medics. Snippet from Hidden Killer. This one I don't think is a spoiler.
@chaos-company angstpril day 16; cry for help
The three medics are frustrated because they still haven’t received any information about Jamie’s location. They know not to assume she’ll be fine. “Help!” the medics hear a mech soldier yelling. He runs right into the medbay, carrying Jamie, “they told me to get her here,” the soldier explains to the worried medics, “they stayed behind to figure out how Jamie ended up unconscious in the snow.” Ratchet takes Jamie from the soldier and takes her to the critical care room.
“Frag, eighty-two degrees,” Jolt worries. The three are terrified that they’re too late. Jamie’s vitals add to the fear. They strip every piece of clothing with care. With no time to wait for someone to get clothes, Ratchet grabs some of Jasmine’s he keeps in his subspace. Despite the oversized clothes, it’s the best they can manage. “We need warm IV fluids,” Ratchet tells Jasmine, “We need to do blood warming.” Jolt nods and gets the equipment ready in an ICU room. Ratchet intubates Jamie and puts her on the portable ventilator until she’s moved to an ICU room. Jasmine returns with warmed IV fluid. She helps Ratchet move Jamie to an ICU room.
They are careful as they put in IV lines for the infusion and hemodialysis machine. They are careful as they wrap Jamie in two blankets with her arms out, then layer several more blankets on top of her. Ratchet switches Jamie to the ventilator in the ICU room. The fear that Jamie won’t be lucky this time is strong. Along with not looking forward to telling anyone, but especially Jamie’s guardians. “Y-you don’t think s-she knew she could die, do you?” Jasmine struggles to ask. “No, I think she was worried about protecting everyone else. She wouldn’t care if she died,” Ratchet explains. “I can’t believe this is happening again,” Jolt sighs.
