Cat-Sìth | Scottish Folklore

If you have ever wondered why black cats are associated with Halloween, the cat-sìth/cait-sìth may be the reason.

They are described as giant black cats with a spot on their chests, an arched back, and long hair always standing upright and bristly.

“Elfin cats (cait shìth) are explained to be of a wild, not a domesticated, breed, to be as large as dogs, of a black colour, with a white spot on the breast, and to have arched backs and erect bristles” “Superstitions of the Highlands & Islands of Scotland” by John Gregorson Campbell (1900)

On Samhain(the early version of Halloween), when the cat-sìth was said to roam around, many families would leave out a bowl of milk to keep in the cat-sìth‘s good favour. If you did that, you would be blessed, if you forgot, you would be cursed. 

As well as that, some people in the Scottish highlands were often fearful of the cat-sìth stealing the souls of the recently dead and carrying them away to the otherworld, so people would stand watch over their loved one until they could be buried. This was called Feil Fadalach or Late Wake. Essentially, this involved a large number of activities to distract the cat-sìth, such as games, dancing, contests, riddles, and even catnip spread over the house. All the fires in the room with the body would be put out, since cats like warmth (though this would also help keep the body from decomposing as quickly).

Eventually, a change of beliefs changed the cat-sìth from a fairy, into a witch. The myth that cats have nine lives is said to come from the fact that a witch could transform to a cat exactly 8 times. If she did it a 9th time, she would be a cat forever.

The cat-sìth is not to be confused with Big Ears, the demonic god of the cats. He was said to be even bigger and more ferocious.

“But Big Ears was a monstrous demon cat who had only a slight connection with the Cait Sith.” “A Encyclopedia of Fairies” by Katharine Briggs (Published in 1976)

That is a story I won’t be covering, because I think it will be too troubling for people. Putting it bluntly, there was a belief that if you brutally tortured a certain number of cats to death in a certain way(known as the taghairm), Big Ears would appear, and grant you wishes in return for your soul.

i fucking FOUND IT!!!!! i stumbled on the Original First Angelo just SITTING THERE in my google photos despite the fact ive checked it a million times before. also, there’s a prototype ist at the bottom, along with myne (who is cropped out)

here’s some modern myne. i haven’t posted her anywhere online until now mostly because i’ve had no need to, and my OC Online Activity is hard to follow and Clogged Full Of Useless Stuff as is. but myne is one of ist’s biggest supporters, a cait sith who serves as one of his 3 familiars. that’s right. ist has FAMILIARS!!!

Myne was summoned forth by Ist before he became Heavenless, a witch with a soft spot for Ers and pity of Ist, the two of them entered a Familiar contract as insurance she would do her best to keep harm away from Ers while Ist would head out to try and earn a living. she’s the closest person to Ist and Ers, and is probably the only person Ist considers a proper friend without any reluctance before the Six Monsters.

A very cute conclusion to the thrill fantasy middle grade graphic novel trilogy! Suri is finally going to meet her dragon... or is she? After her adventures and making new friends, her and her friends are on their way to Monster's Cradle. They'll face off against new monsters, vengeful dragons, and finally find the truth behind her dragon and her past. This was such a fun series to read and I loved the artwork for this series so much. It's a really fun one to read and I think that young readers will love this one!

Concept Art Character Design Challenge: Final Fantasy- Jenova I couldn’t resist an opportunity like this, and it came at such a lucky time too! An artist friend of mine had just recently taught me the basics of digital painting- something I have been trying to get my head around for years. She taught me to section segments off and colour, tone, then add light in steps.  My issue over the years has been the fact that I wanted to shade and add light before the base colour phase was even complete! I really pushed myself with this design, as you can see from the sketchbook page, I couldn’t really fit the full design, so the first thing I wanted to do was spread her features out significantly more. After that I kept flipping the image in the line art phase to ensure my drawing wasn’t skewed, finally after all of that came the most time consuming segment- the toning. I really think my patience has paid off though! I have now captured one of my favourite childhood villains in my own way.
