Okay, sometimes when I have a Rough Night and then have to take a day nap because... I literally can't keep functioning, I have bonkers-ass dreams.
In the latest entry, Goku had, like, broken his arm or something, and he was being a real Vegeta about asking for help, and Chi-Chi and Bulma finally got fed up and sent Dolly Parton after his ass.
And because he is also a rural workin' gal, and a world-class himbo, he was all, "Aw, shucks, Miss Dolly," when she was like, "Goku, sweetie, there's a great big ol' buncha people who care about you back there, wonderin' why you're actin' so daggone foolish. Now straighten up and fly right."
And like...yes. YES. I am 100000% here for it. Furthermore:
No one mistakes her for Launch.
The first time Roshi tries to Roshi up to her, she's like, "Try any of that monkey business with me, sunshine, and you'll be eatin' that turtle shell for dinner. And it looks about bite-sized to me." Because she does like to flirt, but Roshi is a CREEP, and I just don't see her abiding that from someone who is clearly not gonna be a gentleman.
Dolly is 0.95 Vegetas tall, but her typical footwear probably puts her around 1.0 Bulmas, or 1.03 Vegetas in height. (Bulma is canonically taller than Vegeta. It's just a fact.)
This is crucial, because Dolly is looking Ge dead in the eye when she asks him if he can dance. Because he ain't gonna win that girl's heart with his charming attitude. And Geets tries to blow her off, of course, but she's like, "Lord, Vegeta, honey, what're you scared of?" And he's like, "I'M NOT SCARED OF--" and she's like, "Shouldn't be any trouble then, come on."
And of course, once they spend some time together, Dolly's like, "Listen, sweetie, I know what it's like to have big dreams and big, fabulous hair. You gotta show her that big heart, too." And Vegeta's like, "grumble grumble, pout," but she's just like, "Baby, it don't matter if it's broken. Find you a good stable and somebody with a gentle hand. It'll gallop." And he's like, "...I LOVE YOU, MISS DOLLY!!!😭😭😭" And she's like, "I love you too, precious. Now come on, pick up the pace, let's get to swingin'!"
...I just think Dolly Parton could fix what's wrong with every single person in the DBZ Universe.
And she'd take Piccolo on the World Series Poker circuit or something, and he'd destroy everyone.

Hello! I was wondering if you would want to write for Beerus? I was thinking what a courtship would be like between him and a goddess of creation? :) hopefully you're doing well during the midst of everything that's going on in the real world! Best of wishes! -A
Beerus x Goddess of Creation. Reader
Tumblr media
I like the alternative idea. Despite this, I plan to make the personality different! Edit: I'm doing okay, just busy with schoolwork. Best wishes to you, too! I hope everyone who reads this is doing well too, or if not, this can cheer you up a little!

🥢Création et Destruction🥢 (DBS or Dragon ball Super)
Warning(s): Fluff
Although destruction and creation contradict each other in meaning, one can not exist without the other...They must coexist to truly make the universe hold the beauty it possesses.
✨✨✨✨✨
You and Beerus are total opposites.
He destroys.
You create.
He is much more relaxed.
While your shoulders are stiff with responsibility and proper etiquette.
When you met, you hadn't expected him to flirt with you on the spot.
"Huh. My first time meeting the Goddess of Creation, can't believe I've been missing out on such a cute Goddess."
"I—That-that's very unprofessional..."
You didn't understand him. You were taught to always be polite and respectful, to always hold your tongue, to always be professional, and to hold your temper.
He hardly did any of those things.
And he could really test your temper.
He easily broke that elegant, put-together wall you had up.
And he enjoyed every minute of it.
"Why are you taking a nap when you have responsibilities. That's so improper!...Ahem-"
And with time, he broke you down completely.
Noticing you were always tired and stiff and showing you what's it like to relax.
"Just because we have responsibilities doesn't mean we can't relax once in a while. We have to do this for millenniums, might as well catch a few Z's in between."
He is very protective over you when you do relent and catch a nap, he'd be very tempted to destroy the planet of whoever interrupts you.
And he learned you hadn't really explored planets and introduced you to Earth and its cuisine.
Which really excited you.
"Cute..."
"What was that?"
"Nothing."
He liked that your presence wasn't rough as his, the feeling of powerful serenity you gave off was attractive to him. You were polite and fluid in movement, yet your power and knowledge were undeniable.
He wanted you.
So he courted you.
And you saw another side of him.
"Flowers?"
"Bulma gave me an earful and said something about them..."
"Let me guess, you weren't really listening?"
"Well...I want to get this right, so, I tried to remember everything I could. She mentioned something called a 'date' that I'm supposed to take you on..."
He was soft and wasn't afraid to show it...to you...
He noticed your hair was always getting in your face, so he got you fancy hair clips to hold the stray hairs away.
When your shoulders got stiff from playing your role, he learned how you give you massages to make you feel better, but not without cracking jokes the whole time.
He attempted to learn how to cook for you...
Well, actually, he wasn't terrible at that. The dishes he could make were just limited.
You liked watching the process, his frustration was adorable.
Cooking for you? Telling you 'good morning' and 'good night'?
He was whipped.
Undoubtedly.
He even lets you pet him, which you'll do if he gets a little riled up.
You save his dignity and refrain from doing it in public (if it's not necessary) since he purrs a deep rumble.
You do things together, like cooking and of course your roles as Gods.
But Beerus's favorite activity to do with you is definitely napping...or maybe eating...both? That's a hard choice for him to make.
You were really good for each other.
He destroyed your walls and the false personality you upheld.
You created a warmth in his heart that he cherished.
People wondered how you worked out so well, you were opposites.
But being opposites brought you together.
So what if he destroys and you create?
Destruction and creation coexisting can make something truly beautiful
And you two love every minute of it

Oh yeah since it’s Homestuck Day here’s a post I’ve been sitting on for a bit.
Davesprite’s tragedy is even deeper than is immediately obvious.
The scale, time-wise, of the base game - the Alpha Timeline - is something of a joke. It pokes fun, I think, at the concept of Webcomic Time - that an event taking place over dozens of pages over the course of months is, in-canon, only taking place across a day or two.
But Davesprite. Oh, Davesprite.
Dave-the-sprite came from a timeline 4 months (chrono) past Day 1. He’d been hopping enough for it to come out to maybe 1 year for him. He’s very lanky in the animation, and when Rose’s dreamself merges with her Alpha self, the sprites are very slightly different sizes. Future Mutie is visibly older.
But then The Alpha Timeline? The Course Of The Game?
One. Day.
What an absolute whiplash, you guys. He’s been grinding and prepping and mentally readying himself and fucking grieving for his pretty much only friends for nearly a year. Remember how Dragon Ball Z had the Hyper time chamber and it was mentioned that it’s hard to use alone? Because being in there on your lonesome, that’s tough. That’s Dave. He had Rose, who was also grieving and having her own crises that he may or may not have been equipped to help her through at all, and he’s doing all this.
And in like, maybe 12 hours, it’s suddenly all over.
And then he finds out it’s gonna be another three years, but hey, this time he has Jade and John, the people he missed so desperately that he was willing to give up being The Real Dave, a real human, for.
And to them? He’s an extra.
He’s Bonus Dave. He’s Davesprite. He’s Basically Dave, (almost) As Good As The Real Thing!
Like, it’s very hard for me to articulate, but the way that both of them refer to him during the course of their cruise is... dehumanizing, in differing ways.
John calls him Dave, because He’s Basically Dave. (This is after John asked him to let The Real Dave in on their convo, recall). He doesn’t need to be treated any different, because he’s indistinguishable from The Real Dave, Pretty Much!
Jade isn’t as bad - possibly her stint as+fusion with Jadesprite helped - but the way Grimbark Jade loses her temper with Dave post-jump is... telling. She blames a boy she hasn’t spoken with in 3 years for something that a person who is not actually him did.
And he just! Fucking gets forgotten! I know Davepeta feels like an asspull to many readers, but honestly, it’s probably the best thing to happen to Davesprite since his John bit it. Like, was he the one from John’s timeline, or did he not die when the rebooted planet blew up or what? I’ve never understood that.
At least as Davepeta they have multiple people who are genuinely glad to be around them. At least Equius cares about one half and AR doesn’t not-care about the other and they’ve basically got a bestie in Arquiusprite! Getting fused with a reanimated alien catgirl in an alternate timeline(????) was probably the best thing to happen to Dave for a long, long time.
And I’m not even done!
Let’s talk Terezi.
Once we get through Act 5 and the trolls connect with the humans, we get a whole Fairy Godtroll situation that’s kinda cute. John gets Karkat and Vriska in his ear, Jade gets Tavros and Feferi and Kanaya and Karkat (Jade gets a lot of new people, doesn’t she?), Rose still has her Kanaya convos.
And Dave.
Gets.
Terezi.
They’re a great duo, very fun to watch - even with Vriska and Terezi’s weird rivalry shenanigans getting tangled up in it from time to time. As far as he knows, she’s just a bit of an internet weirdo who’s fun enough to hang out with.
As far as Alpha Dave knows, that is.
Davesprite came back, remember, to fix the timeline after Terezi got his John killed. Dave comes back, and argues with his John - that’s the first thing he gets to say to his best friend, one of his only friends, after a year of grieving in a dead, lonely session with only Rose for company. If he loses the fight, John dies.
After some effort, he gets his dumbass (beloved) pal to stop doing the stupid thing, then gives up his humanity (his existence as a core player, his role, his autonomy) and jumps into the sprite. Calsprite was a void of dead-eyed laughter and horror, so he wants to give the kids the best shot they can get, and having a non-cagey sprite on their side is a huge boost.
And Dave, Alpha Dave?
He ignores this.
He takes Terezi’s advice, over and over. Davesprite gives him the medallion, and we never see it used (we never see any sprite medallion used, as far as I can recall). Davesprite has to actively contact his player (his luckier, prime, Alpha self) and make him accept help, like guarding his body in his sleep. Meanwhile, Alpha Dave is getting codec support from the person who killed John, precipitating Davesprite’s entire existence in the narrative.
With the way the comic is structured, it’s really easy to blip over this, but this is what’s happening. Davesprite’s POV must be a goddamn horror movie, complete with futile shouting at the protagonists to stop going into the scary tunnels and following the advice of people who are blatantly out to hurt them. No fucking wonder he eventually fucked off the find Bro, who despite being an abusive piece of shit (did Davesprite ever get the chance to work that one out for himself?), is at least a constant. He’s the sole tie to the life this Dave left behind. Damn. And Dave doesn’t even come looking for him after he “dies”! If Davesprite didn’t vandalize that poster, would Alpha Dave have even known he was alive?
....fuck, is that why he keeps pasting orange text onto things? And provoking John into anger? Is he just doing his damnedest to keep from being trivialized and forgotten?
In the story, in the grand scheme of things, Davesprite is key to keep John from getting killed, and past that?
He has no purpose.
There’s no point to his existence.
His player seeks neither his advice nor his protection. His friends consider him part of the game they’re playing, rather than (an iteration of) their friend. The trolls mock him by doing nothing he can stop or really argue against. His rage has nowhere to go, so he has no rage.
No wonder he chases after Bro. No wonder he chills with Jadesprite. No wonder, no wonder. What a mess. What a disaster. He spends three years on the damn ship and as soon as the groups meet up, Jade begins projecting the time he spent with her on a guy she hasn’t seen since she was 13! And Alpha Dave just says “well, he’s bird me” and accepts this, except when he might get blamed for something he didn’t actually do!
God.

just read ur entire essay about vegeta and like.. goddamn you just gave me a whole new perspective on that funky little man. i love the way it was written and organized
ALSO ALSO i read this bit and am begging u to expand on this concept it sounds so interesting /gen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh you would, would you. I am delighted to oblige.
So. Super Saiyan. A transformation available to Saiyans past certain power thresholds that, while more or less freely accessible after first awakening to it, needs a trigger to become accessible in the first place. Over the course of Z in its many adaptations, we see the first awakenings of Goku, Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Gohan onscreen. Goten, Trunks, and Future Gohan are also Super Saiyans, but we don’t know for sure how that came about. Goten and Trunks in particular are why I say that Super Saiyan (more specifically, the first time you access Super Saiyan) can be read as a trauma response, because there’s no real evidence this is the case on their parts. You can make an argument for them, but in general I choose to believe they’re exceptions to this take, so I won’t be discussing them.
Oh and as for Cabba, Caulifla, and Kale…… they’re literally from an alternate universe. Super Saiyan just has different rules there. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Getting back on track. Goku’s the obvious place to start, so let’s look at him first. In the entirety of Dragon Ball (that I’ve seen), not counting the comedic needle bit in that one episode of GT, Goku has only ever been seen crying three times. Once was his reunion with Grandpa Gohan in early Dragon Ball. Once was in the anime’s version of the Tournament of Power, after Roshi’s near-death incident.
Once was at the beginning of King Piccolo, when he finds Krillin dead. King Piccolo saga is a little infamous for the sudden tonal whiplash—yeah, Tien breaks Yamcha’s leg in the tournament just prior, but they make up about it and it’s not as dire as someone dying. What’s really striking to me about it is Goku’s reaction. He’s more upset than we’ve ever seen him. And he loses worse than we ever see him lose because of it. Sure, in the end everything is put right, but.
But, the thing about trauma is that it makes time go weird. Fast forward about ten years. It’s suddenly happening again. His best friend is dead. He couldn’t do anything to stop it. He doesn’t know that Porunga can revive people who have already died once. As far as Goku knows, Krillin’s gone for good this time. And he watched it happen and watched Freeza laugh about it.
And he reacts essentially the same way. Only this time, he’s orders of magnitude stronger than he was when he was 15, and he has the experience and the wherewithal to control himself somewhat better. Emphasis on somewhat, because it’s very clear that he’s worried about going completely off the deep end in the grips of this power. And he’s right to be! I’m willing to bet money that in Gohan’s whole life, Goku has never pulled the ‘I’m your father, don’t talk back to me’ card on him, and that’s one of the smallest ways this power changes him. When he’s fighting Freeza, he’s a lot more like Vegeta, down to the way he smirks. He’s condescending. He’s brutal. I’ve seen comments to the effect of ‘Freeza’s not fighting Goku anymore—now, Freeza’s fighting Kakarot’ and that’s truly what it feels like.
I could go on, but the particulars of the Namek fight aren’t the important part. The important part is that Goku recognizes how badly that whole thing fucked him up and stays on Yardrat for a year explicitly to get a handle on Super Saiyan before returning home. He knows that if he loses control like that again, there’s a very real possibility he’ll end up hurting someone he cares about, or worse, becoming someone he really doesn’t want to be. (Call it a reach, it definitely is one, but I like to believe Goku picked up Instant Transmission while he was there so he’ll never be too late or too far away to help ever again.)
Vegeta’s case is less… visible? So, much of this is going to be purely my extrapolation. If you take him at his word, Vegeta triggered Super Saiyan with the sheer amount of hatred he felt toward himself for his inadequacy and like. Hello. That’s already a giveaway. I don’t believe he’s outright lying, but I also believe he’s simplifying matters a little. Or a lot. Per My Last Long-Winded Essay, he only gets that far because he leaves Earth entirely for areas uninhabited, which is good for him in some respects and bad for him in others.
The sweet irony of it is that it was Vegeta’s own efforts that locked him out of Super Saiyan. He tried to brute-force his way into it singlemindedly, in the belief that he was simply not strong enough, but Super Saiyan’s trigger is raw, overwhelming emotion. It can be one very clear emotion, or several different ones mixed up, but it’s emotion. It doesn’t answer to logic by its very nature, and frankly, neither does trauma. So Vegeta’s removed all the distractions to his training, yes, but in doing so he’s also removed all the distractions from everything else. Without anybody else around, he doesn’t have anything to get himself out of his own head, so now he’s got a whole universe of space for two and a half decades’ worth of repressed shit to come raging out. Funny how the minute he lets himself feel actual emotions other than the ones he wants everyone to see, the transformation explicitly tied to and powered by emotion rears its head, huh.
Vegeta makes several really dumb decisions once he gets back on Earth, in sharp contrast to the way he handles himself on Namek before he’s face-to-face with Freeza. On Namek, he’s careful to fly under the radar whenever he can, which is why I love the fit he launches into when he realizes Gohan played him, because that’s his control slipping. He’s opportunistic and sneaky and it’s clear he’s doing his damnedest to get what he wants without having to fight people who can kill him. He doesn’t hear the Ginyu Force is coming and rush off to challenge them, he’s like ‘oh shit’ and immediately fucks off elsewhere. I can only make sense of the way he acts during the androids/Cell as a symptom of his need to prove himself.
And make no mistake—it is a need, not a want. The power’s meaningless without people to witness and acknowledge it, the same way the authority of royalty is. His chosen course of action, though, is sort of like painting over rotten wood, if that makes any sense. Letting himself get high off the power, pretending that everything went exactly the way it should have gone from the start, refusing to acknowledge all of his Issues more than passingly. Furthermore, his victory must be complete and unquestionable: that’s why he lets Cell take Android 18. He can’t just… not lose, he has to win. Anything less is anathema to him. You see, he hasn’t yet figured out that he can survive without it.
Okay sorry that got a little in the weeds but I hope you get what I was driving at there. Vegeta’s a mess and talking about him makes me Unstable. Let’s move on.
Of the main four Saiyans, I think Future Trunks’ awakening is the simplest to understand: his trigger is that moment of pure, crushing grief when he finds Gohan dead in the rain. And it’s no wonder. Aside from Gohan and his mother, who does Trunks even talk to in that timeline? We never see him with friends, not until Super. Trunks’ ‘You were everything to me’ in the dub version of the special might be only debatably canon but it’s hardly an exaggeration. Friend. Teacher. Comrade. Brother. Perhaps even a father figure, in some ways. Certainly the only other one of his kind—half-human, half-alien from a long-dead warrior race. There was literally nobody else in the world who could come close to understanding him to the degree that Gohan could have. Gohan dies and Trunks is effectively all alone, the terminarch of one species left to shoulder the fate of another.
It’s a staggering loss for anybody, let alone for a boy of 12 or 13.
Speaking of. Gohan. I think Gohan’s a strange case—not powered by grief or anger, but something different. In the moments before he unlocks Super Saiyan, he’s thinking ‘I have to do it’ before flashing abruptly to all the different times where he was ‘too weak or too scared’ to fight. I personally believe that it’s less determination or ‘the power coming in response to a need’, as Goku puts it, that tips him over the edge. Fear, I think—while not being the whole reason, there’s surely some self-directed anger or disappointment involved—is probably the biggest factor. That’s Gohan’s whole thing—he’s scared of fighting, and to some degree of his own power. If I laid out all the specific examples we’d be here for another thousand words, so I’ll just say that he’s been Through It. We all know this.
This sort of has a continuation in the iconic Super Saiyan 2 transformation against Cell. It’s all on him and it’s not until Cell actually kills someone in front of Gohan that it really twigs that it’s do or die for him. And as much as he’s angry at Cell, the realization that Cell means business, that he really will kill them all? It scares him. Fight or flight takes over. The only real difference is that he chooses fight. The change in how Gohan handles Cell is what really convinces me that emotionally he’s going through something similar to Goku and Vegeta—because it’s almost to the letter exactly what happens with Goku against Freeza. The cruelty, the condescension. I’d argue Gohan leans into the mean demeanor, subconsciously or not, to keep from feeling the fear. And it costs him. But the Gohan discussion is a whole other discussion.
As for Future Gohan, I’m putting a disclaimer here now that none of what I’m about to say is really provable—just really really interesting to think about.
Future Gohan’s life is maybe the worst-case scenario. Like the future timeline sucks specifically for Gohan because he doesn’t like to fight and he has to anyway because what other choice does he have? Let everyone on Earth die without at least trying? He couldn’t, not in good conscience. And it’s not like he’ll have a normal life so long as the androids are around anyway. So in the middle of grieving basically everybody he’s ever known and felt affection for (sans his mother and grandfather, it’s more implied that he’s estranged from them, or at least intentionally distancing himself from them to keep them out of harm’s way), he's also making himself channel anger he hates feeling so he has a shot of even surviving these killers that only exist because of something his father did at least ten years ago. This shouldn’t be his fight, and yet.
Here’s my personal theory. Gohan goes into that final fight with the androids fully intending to die. Not just expecting to, but hoping to. He knows that if he was only barely scraping through those fights with both arms, there’s no way in hell he’ll kill them both when he only has one. He’s not an idiot, but you know what he is? Exhausted. Twelve years of this, being the only resistance to this threat and failing each and every time. He knows what will unlock Super Saiyan for Trunks. He knows there’s someone to carry on the torch and lift the burden. And it’s cruel and selfish of him to put all of that on Trunks and throw himself to the wolves, but it was cruel that he had to carry that all by himself for so long.
He’s fucking tired.
Anyways. That’s my TEDtalk on Super Saiyan. If you read it all the way to the end you’re a real one. Thanks for this ask, you two!

I like to think that part of the appeal of Dragon Ball is the fact these random martial artists keep on taking on world-ending threats, because they are the only ones strong enough to do it. For that reason, do you think Dragon Ball would have gotten as good as it did if none of it's villains could blow up the world?
No, I don't think that would have affected the quality of Dragon Ball.
To be sure, blowing up the whole world is a cool way to raise the stakes. It's awesome how Vegeta tried to ragequit his invasion of Earth, and Goku had to stand his ground because the entire planet would have been destroyed if he didn't try to repel that world-ending Gallick Gun. It's also awesome that Frieza tried to destroy Namek because it was easier than fighting a Super Saiyan. It's awesome that Cell had a self-destruct feature, and the only way to foil it was to take him to a different planet with a smaller population. And of course, it's awesome that Majin Buu just went ahead and destroyed the Earth, and no one could stop him, and the story just kept on going anyway. Those are all big impressive story beats, and Dragon Ball might be poorer without them.
All that said, I don't think taking them out would make the story worse. The Red Ribbon Army arc was great, and the height of their power was that they could probably conquer the Earth with the right leadership and resources. The King Piccolo stuff was great, and the most he could do was to subjugate the Earth and perhaps wipe out its population.
I think it says a lot how the Piccolo Junior arc was such a classic, and yet the stakes were basically the same as the arc before it. Piccolo is back, and if Goku can't stop him then he'll just repeat what he did before. It works. The only real difference there is that Piccolo Junior was stronger and laser focused on eliminating Goku.
Radditz threatened to kill everyone on Earth and sell the empty planet to the highest bidder, which is cool because it goes beyond even what Piccolo had planned for it, which reinforced the notion of Piccolo and Goku teaming up to stop him.
Now you could stop right there, and continue the story with that same limit on "How bad could it get?" and things still work. Frieza planned to destroy Namek after making his wish, so that no one else could use the Dragon Balls, but he needn't have bothered, since killing Guru and the other Namekians would settle that just as easily. Cell's self-destruct could have just been some sort of biological agent that would kill everyone without damaging the planet itself. Kid Buu could have just fought Goku and Vegeta on Earth, though admittedly that's a tough call. You set this guy up as a planet-destroying monster, so it strains credibility that he's stuck on Earth for two days and never goes through with it.
Still, I think there's more to the story than just blowing up planets. Look at Super Hero, where all the major players are much, much stronger than the "planet busters" of Z, and yet it never comes up. Nobody in the story wants to destroy the Earth, so the fact that they can doesn't come into play. Cell Max seems to be nearly mindless, but he also knows how to fight pretty well, so he must have some rudimentary control over his power, which keeps him from wrecking the earth every time he goes berserk. I assume his self-destruct is designed the same way. It's contained to destroy whatever killed him, but it doesn't blow up the whole world because Dr. Hedo isn't as nihilistic as his grandfather was.
"The whole world might be destroyed!" is just a tool, one of many that Akira Toriyama had in his toolbox. The fact is, once he introduced that level of power, he couldn't really raise the stakes much higher. Villains like Buu or Zamasu could destroy every planet, but it basically amounts to the same thing, so Dragon Ball has been on that same level of stakes ever since Vegeta fought Goku for the first time 35 years ago. And if the stories have been all right over those past 35 years, then there really isn't a need to raise the stakes any higher, is there?
Likewise, if he had kept that notion off the table, and the worst Vegeta could do was to render the Earth uninhabitable or something, then we'd have 35 years of that being the worst anyone could do, and I don't think it would make that much of a difference.
To come at it from a different direction, I don't think "villains who can blow up the world" is what made Dragon Ball good. It was already good well before that came into play. And if Toriyama could tell a great story without that angle, then he's no worse off with or without it.
I was thinking the other day about how irritating it gets when fans argue over whether "O.G. Dragon Ball" is better or worse than "Z". They're the same story, after all. It's like arguing over which half of a movie is better. But it struck me that this is a big part of Toriyama's legacy. Dragon Ball is such a classic that fans talk about it like he made two classics and debate which one is the best. That's pretty damn impressive.
I think it proves that there's not some single "special ingredient" that makes the story work. Way back in the beginning, it was made clear that martial artists have a duty to use their special skills to help people, and that's been the through-line of Dragon Ball. Saving the entire planet from some world-busting menace is taking that idea to the extreme, but the idea still works, even if it's just Goku helping a sea turtle get back home, or tackling the Red Ribbon base to wish Upa's dad back to life.

Oki Imma start sharing some art that I planned to share, but I'm gonna split it up into sections
This first section will be: character designs (basically characters with my own lil design twist)
Im just gonna go in an order I think fits (cus I don't feel like trying to find the order of when I made em)
So firstly - I succumbed to drawing Banban characters (kinda)
I only drew Bittergiggle
Tumblr media
(and here's a version without the outfit and snake accessories) (by 'outfit' tho only the shirt)
Tumblr media
Since a lot of the Banban characters could be animals/creatures (bird, jellyfish, gorilla, fiddles, snail, toad, etc) I tried to think of one for Bittergiggle, and they honestly gave me Chimera-vibes :3
So ye chimera Bittergiggle
Secondly - I finally drew Bugbo
But I did like 4 versions:
Closer to canon
Tumblr media
2. Wings
Tumblr media
3. Tail
Tumblr media
4. Wings + Tail
Tumblr media
I also drew Hoppo!!
Tumblr media
(I couldn't draw her standing on all 6 legs like regular no matter how hard I tried, had to do the standing height, which I think was said to be "monstrously tall" or something like that)
Thirdly - SAMS/MGAFS
This one I just designed characters from the Sun and Moon Show & the Monty Gator and Foxy Show, with my own twists
Starting off strong with Jack 'O Moon (or as I'll call Jack'o to form a difference because somehow I made a SAMS Jack 'O Moon design before I could decide on my HW2 Jack 'O Moon design), who I also made a version of how they'd look in the dark!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, I finally found a Solar design!!
Tumblr media
(I kept trying to make my own look for Solar but I could never come up with one until now, and I really like it!! :3)
Next, I did Foxy and FC!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(fun fact: I based their designs on real foxes - mainly just their ears tho - so Foxy is a Red Fox, while FC is a Bat Eared Fox)
Finally (and probably the most confusing), I drew Vegeta
(not the actual canon Vegeta from Dragon Ball Z, the one that's Monty's child on the Monty Gator & Foxy Show)
Tumblr media
Since I struggled too hard with his design I just said "screw it" and animaled him (honestly his model on the show kinda gave me penguin vibes, so I based him on a Rockhopper Penguin)
Anyways, that's all the designs Im pretty sure I did while gone!! (also, sometimes I call FC "Effcey" to make it look more like a name, and disguise the fact that his name is literally just "Foxy's Child", and I call Vegeta "Veggy" cus they call him that on the show, and also so it's not confused with the actual Vegeta)

The rain of blood threatened by interdimensional butchers
The endless abyss that returns all it swallows to a uniform mass
The cruel, twisted design of a brother dispassionate about life
Soul. A fragile thing so easily shattered, if not for The Hero.
Been listening to Double Fucking Rainbow Returns again. Partly because it's a baller track, and because I think that particular arrangement of the leitmotif captures a sense of desperate determination on Providence's end. It plays during his last stand after all.
To me, that stand isn't just against the Lone Survivor.
As if the their absurd power wasn't enough to convince Providence to put them down, the horrors that would follow his death act as the nails in the coffin. He's been holding all of them back; he stole the artifact with which the Imps can invade, kept the Void at bay by his own blade, trapped his brother and stamped out any and all items of his influence he could find. All the while collecting near-extinct life from across space.
Whether it was for noble reasons or his obsession with soul, the fact of the matter is clear. Without Providence, Petrichor V would be beset by ALL of these disasterous forces without any reasonable defense against them.
It shows in Risk of Rain 2. The Imps can now narrowly avoid death via portals. Mithrix's influence becomes much more immediately threatening. Pockets of Void start appearing on Petrichor V's surface and corrupt their surroundings.
Providence was staring down a lot more than just an unnaturally strong human (or robot/lizard-thing) at the end of Risk of Rain; it was every terrible, violent, unimaginable power that would be emboldened by Providence's death. Despite his choices leading to this outcome, all the way back to sealing Mithrix on the moon, Providence lays blame on the Survivor. Questioning their nature, how it is they managed to kill him, calling them a monster for both their deeds and the events they had unknowingly set into motion by killing him.
Humanity probably would have gotten along fine if the Survivor died. The Contact Light isn't the last bastion of their people after all, as Petrichor V is to several doomed species. The planet has no such luxury due to Providence being the only one with any real power to stop these threats; the only one allowed to decide who comes and goes, who is worthy of being saved and who should be pushed back or outright destroyed. With no one as his equal, everyone on his planet is doomed without him.
It works fine enough as a standalone story - that of a revered diety acting as a shield for all of these creatures, that his inability to protect them from the Survivor renders them without protection from a potential future threat from these same, murderous sky-demons (we don't take kindly to having our people and our crap messed with). With the retroactive lore that Risk of Rain 2 provides and Returns' addition of the fourth phase though, it emphasises in my mind the idea that Providence had a lot to lose in that fight. Humanity alone is enough to make life on the planet complicated. Throwing in an equally potent brother and eldritch crabs on top of that raises the stakes considerably.
Return's Providence is not quite the same Providence as RoR1's; Returns came after we got the context of RoR2. If that justifies a last stand with Dragon Ball Z lasers and a tune that SCREAMS "I can't lose here!" in Hopoo Games' eyes, I 100% stand by that decision.
If you've been holding something that contains the Voidling back this long, you deserve to be a badass for the half-second before getting one-shot a third time in the same fight.

* cracks knuckles * time to big sad with Faith ,
so I was thinking about the 'person A accidently shot person B' trope right and who better for the angst of this ask. I'm still deep in the Alejandro era so you know where this is going:
• It is a known fact that reader wants kids, like if the cartel is out there with balloons and stuff, the reader is one upping them ALWAYS as a Vaquero and as a person.
• Reader is basically the token God parent of any Vaqueros baby. People joke she and Alejandro are God parents together till it becomes real, they're skating around that because >shy< so they're not a thing.
• Los Vaqueros are caught up in an attack/raid, Alejandro and Valeria have been fighting, she gets away.
• It was an accident really but Alejandro shot after her except someone got caught in the crossfire, one of his own.
• His anger and frustration clear right up and he's shifted into Head Vaquero, called for an evac and he's feeling really bad apologizingprofusely, the reader is chill about it. Handling everything as best she can.
• When they get to a hospital and they're seeing a doctor, they fix her up except there is news, Alejandro insisted on staying with her 'as her superior' , so he hears everything.
• After that injury, reader can't have any kids. Reader is numb, she's not really saying anything and the Colonel, hell devouring would be a kindness.
• Is there forgiveness and reconciliation and a get together? Is there resentment?? Stay tuned for scenes from our next episode of Dragon Ball Z
Do with this as you see fit, it's all yours🖤
this should be a movie fr fr
guess who's going to pull an Ernest Hemingway and write the saddest toe curling thing 😈
stay tuned besties im about to write something 🫶🏻🤭
oh and tysm pookie your really have some amazing ideas omg 🤭

Vanguard Divine Z episode 6 reaction Ooh this one was kinda fire
Sorry for the late reaction I was busy yesterday
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think the masked person is someone from Overdress who Akina will meet later. Mostly because Taizo recognizes them and it seems that they told Taizo about Akina’s sister. I feel like it has to be a character we would recognize otherwise why the mask? The only ones short enough that I can think of is Yu-yu, Urara, and the gremlin (but I don’t think they met). I’m pretty sure the masked person is a guy so that leaves Yu-yu or the gremlin. Those are my guesses for now. They could be putting on a voice or something.
Tumblr media
Taizo is so nice 😊
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love these dorks. It’s interesting that Akina already knows to aim for a winning image though he has a very experienced friend teaching him so it makes sense.
Tumblr media
Haha, I LOVE this man🤣! He really said “fuck it we ball”. Okay, I feel like Akina is already my second favorite Vanguard protag behind Aichi. He’s just so funny and likeable. I like the way he won was through catching his opponent off guard with a crazy and unique strategy. I was thinking that I didn’t want him to win because it would feel like he has plot armor but the explanation is actually pretty satisfying. I was EXTREMELY worried that Akina would become Chrono 2.0 but I was wrong. This man isn’t trigger sacking he actually has some skill. Specifically this man pulled a Jotaro and bluffed like hell to win🤣. It was a real cool mind game strat. Like I don’t blame Taizo for getting sucker punched by his mad strategy. So it’s…
Favorite Vanguard Protagonists:
1. Aichi
2. Akina
3. Shinemon
4. Yu-yu
5.Emi
6. Kai (This is as a protagonist not a rival. I just don’t think he works well as the protagonist. He’s best as a rival.)
7. Chrono
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course Masanori can smell the bs. This plushie is definitely secretly evil I’m calling it. Though, who knows maybe Vanguard will try to subvert our expectations with that as they do often. Otherwise I’m thinking the plushie is linked to Gyze somehow.
Tumblr media
Hello, the gremlin is returning in the next episode 👀!
I’ve definitely been appreciating a return to tradition with Vanguard focusing back on character strategies and connecting to Cray.
Also I’ve been reading the comments and the haters seriously boggle my mind. It feels like they’re trying to hate it for the sake of it. Geez, they’re making og fans look bad. Like I am THE og Vanguard fan. I talk about it leagues more than the rest of the franchise but these people are seriously acting like this is the most boring and predictable series. Like dude this is not G or V series calm down. If anything those two were predictable af. The most unpredictable series have been og, Shinemon, and the D era. They’re like “oh Akina is so perfect that he isn’t a person” as if Akina didn’t lose his first fight and lose a bunch during his training 😅. The writers also went out of their way to actually justify his crazy win. Like it’s not like he trigger sacked to victory. He did a crazy aggressive and unorthodox strategy to catch his opponent off guard and win that’s actually good writing and reminds me of og. For instance when Aichi blindsided Goki with Soul Saver Dragon and it’s skill. Much like this win it didn’t come out of nowhere and was foreshadowed before and during the fight. That’s why I like the D era it reminds me of og in spirit. The characters actually have strategies to win that are explained like og. Honestly, I just really don’t get the hate. Some won’t be satisfied by anything.

Okay, I had a kinda random idea for a DBZ fanfic, and wanna hear thoughts on it.
SO! Has anyone heard of the old soap opera from the 80’s-90’s, Melrose Place? If not, totally okay - it’s old.
But anyway, the very basic plot summary is that a group of characters live together in an apartment complex called Melrose Place. And there’s lots of different interactions and relationships, both good and bad. I loved this series (and wouldn’t finished it if it wasn’t removed from Hulu 🥲). On the outside, it viewed itself as a happy, fluffy show about friendship, with sprinkles of drama - but that is FAR from accurate.
This show is surprisingly super dark and angsty, with all sorts of crazy plot points. Covers just about everything; romance, sex, drug abuse, domestic abuse, betrayal, cheating, kidnapping, murder, politics, blackmail, homophobia, racism, sexism, pregnancy, and so many other things I’m probably forgetting. As much as I liked it - I wish it was a little on the fluffier side, and had a few more less frustrating and more likable characters (looking at YOU Micheal - f**k you!)
Ahem, anyway, what does any of this have to do with Dragon Ball Z?
Well, I kinda like the idea of throwing a few of my favorite DBZ characters in this setting and writing a little soap opera myself. Obviously, I’d tone down the darkness by quite a bit, but I’d kinda like to try writing a gritty, angsty drama - with a happy ending (cause I need happy endings).
The problem with writing something like this though is there’d be multiple main characters (no more than 10) so I’d have to give turns to people having the spotlight - like a real TV show. I’ve never done that before, but it also sounds like fun!
I already have a few characters in mind: Frieza and Frost (obviously), Yamcha, Cell, Zamasu, Hit, and Cooler (and possibly Anonymous_H’s OC Geliaden, but I don’t know if I know him enough to write his character that in depth - and obviously if they approved of me using their OC).
But anyway, I wanna hear thoughts on this? Would this be something you’d wanna read? If I did this (and there’s NO promises) it would be very long and episodic like (like Dungeons and Dragon Balls). AND! I’m gonna finish Melted Passion before I even fathom starting a new project, so this won’t be coming anytime soon.
But tell me….what’re everyone’s thoughts?

Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13 Abridged Review
Originally posted August 4th, 2016
Team Four Star shows off their effortless mastery of clever comedy.
Tumblr media
On a purely structural level, Super Android 13 is probably the strongest of the Dragonball movie source material that Team Four Star has yet to work with. The androids themselves don’t require any convoluted explanation; they’re just the leftover scraps Dr. Gero has to rely on now that Android 17 and 18 have turned against him, and they kickstart the conflict immediately by attacking Goku in a public place, forcing our heroes out into the arctic to deal with them (which for all of Trunks’ mumbling, is a nice change of scenery from the usual desert wasteland).
These androids are a real threat too, forcing Goku, Trunks, and Vegeta to all go Super Saiyan in order to defeat them, only to find out that even a Super Saiyan can’t stand up to the fully powered Android 13. The conclusion to this fight is excellent as well, with Goku defeating 13 through a creative combination of his two most powerful abilities, rather than simply “punching him harder.”
Team Four Star even manages to avoid the stereotypical characterization of the villains used in these movies, imbuing each of the antagonists with a personality that goes beyond “the one with an accent,” “the one with a weird power,” and “the dumb one.” Android 15 is an homage to protagonists of classic Blaxploitation, walking, talking, and fighting with a near Super Saiyan level of swagger as he drinks himself into oblivion to numb the hollowness inside. Android 14 on the other hand is a quiet, introspective warrior, who from what we see seems to simply be trapped in the wrong crowd.
Both of these characters have fitting ends as well, with 15 being taken down by the prince of Saiyan swagger and utterly humiliated in the process, as Vegeta throws a dog treat at him right before he explodes. 14’s end is fitting as well, as he and Trunks clash and he realizes his impending doom, ending his life by observing that metal has both given him life and taken it away.
Tumblr media
Android 13, the primary antagonist, is fairly shallow by comparison. After all, there’s not too much more to him than a funny southern accent, an obsession with trucker hats, brute strength, and a little outright racism.1 It’s not exactly a deep character, especially when compared to the depth Team Four Star has achieved with characters like Cooler (who originally was literally just Freeza by a less clever name).
There is a part of me that feels it would be unfair to southerners to not criticize this shallow portrayal of their culture, but honestly, I had too much fun watching it to really care. RicePirate’s performance is incredibly charismatic, and even though 13 is shallow and kind of terrible, you can’t help but be endeared to him a little. KaiserNeko’s editing and sound design certainly helps here as well, as he makes sure that watching 13 beat the shit out of our protagonists is fun and impactful.
The rest of the movie’s strengths are pretty simple: Team Four Star jam packs these twenty minutes full of really smart jokes, making nods to the fraught relationship Vegeta and Trunks have when it comes to androids, joking about the length of time it takes the Saiyans to actually go Super, and poking fun at themselves in a series of brilliant fourth wall breaks at the end, wherein a narrator walks out and another steps in to criticize the lack of effort he’s perceived in the series since season 2. He may well have a point, not because Team Four Star has gotten lazy in season 3, but because they pull of making Super Android 13 so entertaining, compelling, and funny that it looks absolutely effortless.
Rating: 4.5/5

Stray Observations
113’s racism is actually kind of interesting, given that he calls out our protagonists for thinking 15’s defect is his color, but talks down to Piccolo later on due to his color. I’m not quite sure what it says about him, but it’s definitely the most nuanced part of his portrayal.
No quotes in the Strays today, just because this episode is so chock full of funny dialogue that quoting everything I like would fill up a full page.

Okay so we... need to get used to blocking more.
And I'm saying this now, while we're getting new Twitter users coming to Tumblr. Especially as it collapses.
People are going to say shit you don't like. If it's not harmful to someone else, just block them or mute them. If it DOES harm someone else, you can block and report.
Arguing over stuff is... something we all do occasionally but the twitter style of arguing and the tumblr style of arguing will become a shitstorm if they combine. We already have a LOT of problems on this website, so please. P l e a s e.
Do not argue with someone who has a terrible(see: not the same as yours) take on your favorite character. Block, or block and report.
Some other tips:
Callouts are also reserved for the worst of the worst of the worst. Not every 5 seconds. They are reserved for people who do real, terrible harm, WITH PROOF so that we don't just ruin random people's lives. Callouts, if wrong, can ruin lives. Exhaust all other options before calling someone out because again, it can quite literally ruin lives(I have seen at least 7 people die or completely go depressive spiral for YEARS for false callouts. It affects real people. Don't do it unless you fucking mean it.)
Tags are NOT FOR ENGAGEMENT. They are an organization system/personal thoughts bubble. You tag the thing that the thing is about, and then if you have extra thoughts that you, you put them down there too. If you tag things that you think are popular but do not belong in the actual tag itself (i.e., selfies tagged "scooby doo, rabbit, and dragon ball z" are bad and you should not.) You can actually get reported for that. Like. They'll take your post down for misusing the tagging system.
And finally
Blog about whatever you want. Literally. People don't come on here to get popular. The follower number is hidden behind screens no one can see but you. The reblogs and likes are for fun, and usually only really matter to the people who NEED them for business, outreaches for help, or art. Use reblogs as much as you can, they are the TOP engagement on this webbed site.
Have fun, and don't be a dick.

give-grian-rights is a hermitshipper
Hold that thought
Thinking of how Grian is a meow meow and Taurtis is a bark bark. Perfect for each other, but what about Sam? What is he?
In Tokyo Soul ‘Dragon Ball Z!!’ #37 with timestamp 20:15, Grian says that Sam is his dog and Sam lists all the things he does as a dog with a suit and all agree (including UnstoppableLuck) that Sam is a dog. Does this mean Sam is a bark bark?
We need to look further in
Back in Yandere Highschool when they were still in the small town, everyone called him nicknames such as Bunny Boy, Carrot Boy, My Beloved Rabbit, Mario, Ruler of the Universe Boy (I was reading the wiki for the nicknames and accidentally put this in, this is when their classmate Igbar got possessed by Cthulhu and told Sam that he was gonna destroy the world at the end), and Disappointment from probably Grian one time. Does this also mean he might be a bun bun? Will he be replacing Chris Pratt in the new Super Mario movie? Or will he cause another world reset? But we sure know he’s a disappointment with his harsh crimes of playing Roblox in his downhill due to not giving us his credit card info when he got Robux
But let’s look more further in
Yandere Highschool reveals once more that in the small Halloween Arc, Sam is wearing satan horns and tail with red hot sauce eye contacts (the red hot sauce contacts isn’t canon in this, it’s from his old Winnie the Pooh series where he wore the same outfit and had that excuse for his red eyes, this time it’s because of the exhaustion of Yuki hunting him down after the Prom Arc and haven’t felt peace ever since) as a costume but reveals in ‘Halloween Special!’ #2 of the small arc in timestamp 4:20 of when Grian pulls the tail that it’s real. And Grian laughed about it. How sussy of him. And in the same episode in timestamp 7:25 it’s also revealed that Sam is the tallest, which is sus. Does this mean Sam is satan? Satan sounds pretty tall and probably the only being that wants his lover to fight someone in the streets
Come further down with me
The series packs so much lore for Disappointment, especially in ‘Bring Your Dad to School’ #76 where Kazoo Papá (it’s Grian but since they killed Yuki’s real father in a dumpster they had to improvise so Yuki and Taurtis wouldn’t find out, also it’s revealed that Karu (Yuki’s father) is Taurtis’ ‘son’ but it’s fake yet Taurtis still believes it due to his parenting abandonment issues in a young age in another series called Yandere) saw Sam’s father for the first time and quote “..didn’t even know Sam had a dad…. I assumed he sort of hatched out of the ocean or something..” and Sam also says he has a tail but tucks it between his legs. Rabbit tails are usually small and cannot go down that far, especially when it’s revealed in Tokyo Soul ‘I hate Jason!’ #12 in timestamp 13:41 when ShipCaptainSion asked Sam and Grian if they have booty treasure but misread it as Grian said “Well Sam’s got the finest booty in this entire store” and was ordered by Sam to slap it after. And due to how they reacted, it seems like the trio all have nice asses. Now back to the tail being tucked in, it might as well be a fish tail from the curve of the ass being too big for a normal rabbit tail to actually be tucked in between the legs. And Sam at a young age does seem to like baths, and even fake drowning to get some ladies attention, not even actually drowning
But what about that time in Tokyo Soul ‘The Dark Lord Cthulhu!’ #38 in timestamp 0:00 where he gave birth to a raw chicken in the boys bathroom and named it after Grian’s real name, Charlie? Who knows, but we do know Grian likes the name with no reason
In conclusion, Sam could be any type of animal. He could be a bark bark, a bun bun, a gup gup, or satan himself. Or maybe a milf chicken.
And whatever you do, don’t give him a carrot. Mario isn’t safe, none of us are safe. The Samgladiator lore is intense and we didn’t even talk about the time were he poisoned his crush

I am not sure why you decided to cover Evangelion all of a sudden, but I am hella old like you and haven't watched it for whatever reason either. (which was strange because it was all the rage back at school thousands of years ago)
Not sure why this series eluded you also, but anyway I just want to thank you for this opportunity as I have decided to watch along. Looking forward to seeing more of your analysis.
Do you have any other bucket list 90s anime series that you have some interest in covering? I recently got around to Martian Successor Nabisco myself because the theme song is amazing
PS: You're a chemist right? Please make some crazy chemical that will make oldness go away for your sake and mine, it's 2024 I can't believe we haven't invented immortality yet
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading.
I don't remember exactly when I first heard of NGE, but I'm pretty sure it was in the late 90s, probably in the Diamond Previews or Wizard Magazine. As I got deeper into comic book collecting, I bought both of those publications, and as anime started to gain a foothold in North American nerd culture, I started to see more and more anime/manga products referenced or advertised in Wizard and Previews.
I pretty much despised anime in the early 90s, mostly thanks to poor localizations of shows like Superbook and Speed Racer, which made the whole genre look like a bad joke. I remember those ads for "Japanimation" that tried so hard to make it sound badass and cool, but the ads were so corny that they ended up making the stuff look even dumber. By 1997 or so I had kind of learned to tolerate it as a concept, although I still had no interest in it. Sailor Moon was on Toonami, but it seemed like they only put it in the block to add a certain variety to the show. Vintage superhero fare, Thundercats, Sailor Moon, and that Johnny Quest show with CGI. Then they added an obscure show called Dragon Ball Z to the lineup, and that slowly won me over.
By 2000 I was tuning into Toonami mainly for Batman and Superman TAS, and getting hooked on DBZ and Tenchi Muyo! at the same time. I refer to these as the "Four Horsemen of Toonami" for that reason. In 2001 I started writing a Superman/Tenchi crossover, which basically cemented my status as a huge weeb. (Luffa is just a continuation of my effort to do fanfics of the Four Horsemen block of Toonami.*)
Anyway, somewhere in this period I probably started seeing merch for Rei and Asuka in their plugsuits or whatever they're called. I might have seen the Evas but let's be real, a mech wouldn't have stood out much in a genre full of giant robots. I'd see ads for things like Eva and Revolutionary Girl Utena and wonder just what the hell these things were about, but I also just shrugged and accepted that I would probably never find out, since anime was expensive and difficult to find, and I wasn't going to go out of my way just to satisfy idle curiosity. Back in those days, anime was an investment, and I wasn't going to pay thirty bucks for three episodes of something unless I knew it would be good. I tried a few things like Noir and Excel Saga, but only because I had a fairly decent idea what I was getting into.
By 2016, I had more disposable income, and this blog was pretty well established as a way to spend my free time, so I started looking for new things to watch. I checked out Hellsing Ultimate mostly so I'd be able to understand the jokes in Hellsing Ultimate Abridged. I checked out JJBA because it was red hot at the time, and everyone was talking about who their favorite Jojo was, and I wanted to know what that meant. I checked out Utena because I got a tip that it was available for free on YouTube, and I watched the first season of Sailor Moon. I didn't do all of that in 2016. It probably took me until 2018 to get all that watched.
So it was probably somewhere in there that I gave serious thought to tracking down Neon Genesis Evangelion, because it's one of those that I always wondered about, and now I had the means to actually find it and watch it, and I had enough anime experience that I felt reasonably confident that I could appreciate it. I suspect that I could have screened it between 1997 and 2010 I just would have been confused. But I've seen people talk about it for a lot of years, and probably a lot of that's been on tumblr, and it's just one of those things that's been on the fringes of my pop culture awareness.
I think NGE finally became available on Netflix in 2020 or something? But there were fans complaining about the dubs and the subs, so I thought I should hold off for a while. In 2021 I finally just said "fuck it" and bought a used copy of the "Perfect Collection" on DVD. My thing was, if I was going to watch this, I wanted to get it right the first time. I've savored Dragon Ball for decades by watching the dub, then the subs, but if I'm going to try out new stuff I don't want to have to keep going back to get the "true" experience.
I'm doing it now mainly because I hadn't had time before. I've been caught up in other things, and 2024 looked wide open, so I started thinking about things I've been putting off that I really wanted to do, and this was one of the first things I thought of. I just want to scratch that itch, and even if this show turns out to be awful, at least I can have the satisfaction of knowing I finally saw for myself.
As far as other old anime titles, I don't have any immediate plans. I still need to watch the Akira movie, but I read the manga so that sort of damped my interest in checking out the movie version. Galaxy Express 999 is on my bucket list, kind of for the same reasons as Evangelion and Utena, where I used to see ads for it and wondered what it was about. Fist of the North Star also interests me, because it has a kickass theme song, and I'm pretty sure it had a profound influence on the early years of JJBA. But I probably won't get around to them for a while.
Ultimately, there's only so much I can do with the time I have on this planet. There is no elixir of life, and unless they let you watch anime in heaven, I have to set priorities. One gripe with anime that I still retain from my youth is that it's pretty damn impenetrable. What I mean by that is that you can't even remotely judge a title by its cover, and so much of this stuff runs together that it's impossible to tell what would appeal to me and what isn't worth my time. I think that's why I've let popular culture and memes guide me in recent years. Stuff like JoJo Fridays and "Bitch, I Drink People" are tips that these shows had lasting appeal, and you don't make an impression like that without having a solid story. They can put a bunch of boobs on a DVD cover, but they can't draw a picture of the stuff that counts.
