So I have a dormant scooby doo hyperfixation (that comes back now and then) and since the new Velma show is trending rn I feel the urge to tell everyone that in the Mystery Incorporated series Fred is canonically autistic with a special interest in making traps and I never see anyone mention this. It was confirmed in a video that’ll be linked at the bottom of this post.

But yeah, aside from all the other problems with the new Velma show (disclaimer: I haven’t seen the show yet but have seen some previews and have heard things about it that have given me very low hopes for how the show will be) one of the biggest icks for me so far is making Fred into a shallow and arrogant asshole popular rich boy stereotype instead of going the Mystery Inc route and making him a classic himbo and autistic who’s obsessed with building traps.

Autistic Fred Jones is the best version of Fred Jones. I love that he displays autistic characteristics without being a lazy one dimensional stereotype of autism. In the show, from what I remember (I need to give it a rewatch), he has a clear special interest in building traps to the point that it defines his life and affects his relationships, he struggles a lot with interpersonal relationships, indirect communication and social signals (especially when it comes to being oblivious to Daphne’s romantic signals, and the issues this causes in their relationship). But he’s not one dimensional, in fact he has more emotional complexity in this series than in any other rendition of Scooby Doo, in my opinion, and even though he’s autistic he’s still a conventionally attractive man and a central character who is desired by one of the main, attractive female leads in the show, which I almost NEVER see.

This post is about Fred, but I also wanted to mention that I have a lot of love for the Mystery Inc creators deliberately writing Velma as a lesbian who was struggling with coming to terms with her sexuality throughout the show, and giving her a canonical sapphic love interest, in a time where having a queer character in the main cast of a kids show was unheard of.

Anyway, I recommend watching Mystery Inc if you don’t want to watch the new Velma show but still want to watch something that hits the Scooby Doo nostalgia spot. It still has the fun of classic Scooby Doo that speaks to my inner child but it’s also dark and complex enough to appeal to teen and adult audiences (as well as younger audiences) without over the top edginess.

anyway, a very short drabble to help my boredom. based on this prompt:

the sounds of footsteps rang within the halls, both you and ghost in uniforms that weren't yours. "no chance in hell this'll work," ghost mumbles, staying close behind you. the light chatter of nearby guards echoing, "trust me—" left, right, left, right. double checking the hallway, "—we're almost in."

both of you were on a mission: infiltrate the enemy base undetected, get as much information as possible, and leave. it seemed simple, easier plan than many you've been on. although incredibly risky. it was easy to be spotted whenever hiding in plain sight. especially while wearing stolen uniforms.

"how am i supposed to trust a bloody thing that comes out of your mouth?" barking back, his gaze sharpens whenever you make eye contact. turning around, pausing your steps as you stood behind a corner. "why shouldn't you? i find myself the most trustworthy."

"you put milk in my tea."

"that was an accident."

"it still counts."

rolling your eyes, you turn on your heel and continue walking once more. down many halls, too many to count as you stayed on high alert.

right, left, right, left— your arm is yanked as you hear a distant yell in a foreign language. they had spotted you.

ghost drags you by the arm, sprinting down the halls as you both try outrunning the enemies. finally catching your legs, you run beside him. a glance over your shoulder, you see a group of armed guards following.

bang, bang, bang. gunshots fired.

ducking your head, with ghost's hand still around your wrist, you make a left turn down another hall. a right turn. one more right. you had to find somewhere to hide, quickly.

you spot a nearby locker. empty and open. using your other hand to grab ghost by the shoulder, without a second thought, you pushed both of you inside as the door shut behind you.

the pacing steps of the guards ran past, continously shouting in their native tongue. the front of your body pressed tightly against his with little to no room to move. silence overtook the atmosphere, the two of you closely listening for anyone else. it didn't sound like anyone was near.

neither of you could directly look at each other. you knew if he could, he'd be staring daggers at you. another moment or two passes.

"is now a bad time to tell you i'm claustrophobic?" you choke out.

the lutienents hand reaches out to the metal of the door. no budge, it was locked.

a sigh escapes from ghost's lips while he pushes his body against the wall of the locker as far as possible.

thinking about what's new scooby doo fred in particular on this fine evening. he's the most 'just some guy' of all time. he likes sports but not the ones you would expect (ice hockey and wrestling). he lives with and COOKS FOR shaggy and scooby. he adores his van. he's easily embarrassed by his parents but cares so deeply about them and goes Dead Serious when they're in danger. he's such a big elvis fan that he went to a fantasy elvis camp. he almost died twice, and on both occasions scooby single-handedly saved his life. he's sad that he doesn't have a catchphrase. he refers to the rest of the gang as his family. he's easily distressed when others say his lines/come up with plans/drive the mystery machine because he's autistic and needs his routine. he panicked when fake-dating daphne as bait for a monster and ended up extensively rambling about his hayfever. he turned into a vampire that one time. he stood up and did a live trap demonstration in the middle of an interview because he cannot sit still for even five minutes. he has such a goofy way of expressing himself that velma and daphne refer to it as "fred speak" and need to translate it for others. he will throw his entire body at a monster if it causes his friends the slightest harm. he thinks he's above the laws of physics. he's never had ownership of the communal mystery inc braincell ever, in his life. and most importantly of all, HE CAN BENCH PRESS 220

you gotta understand that sbi and like. c!sbi. are different things. sbi is this weird mix of the characters but mostly the dynamic of the ccs. it is not rpf. the sbi-verse is unique and pulls themes from everywhere. it's why there so many aus because there is no canon sbi. there's c!sbi from dsmp and they are different from regular sbi.
