Every Rose Has Its Thorn Part 11
Tumblr media
A/N: If you enjoy this check out my bio for my masterlist and the link to my Etsy
Summary: The battle for New York begins
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: violence, language
Word Count: 1340
I spent the whole flight to New York stealing glances at Steve. After what Fury had said and the look he had I couldn’t help myself. I had been pinning for Steve since the moment I had walked into the gym to recruit him…Okay I was pinning the moment I watched the videos of him after he came out of the ice. But that was a well kept secret. It wasn’t as if my feelings were out for everyone to see. I wasn’t like Phil; gushing about Steve to anyone who would listen. But when I finally met Steve it became harder to hide my feelings, even though I tried.
However the looks Nat kept sending my way made it painfully obvious that I was failing miserably. Thanks for that Nat. Like I wanted your smug assassin smirk that says ‘I know you want him’ thrown my way. I didn’t have time to be worrying about my feelings and the fact she was looking at me like that made it hard not to think about them.
We were heading to New York to take on an alien army. Aliens! From outer space! Of course I knew that they were out there. I had known Thor since his first trip to earth. But he was a kind, sweet, goofy guy. He reminded me of a big puppy in that way; loyal, caring, but extremely protective and capable of protecting. These aliens Loki was about to unleash on earth were a far cry from the god of thunder and his goofy antics.
I was willing to fight to protect my home, to protect the people of earth. There was no doubt in my mind about that, but I wasn’t sure I actually wanted to see how hideous these things were going to be.
My gaze once more drifted to Steve and all thoughts of the looming battle left my mind. It was as if he was some kind of cathartic for me. One look at him and all my problems melted away. I smiled at him warmly and he smiled back. There was something there, I could feel it, but at the same time I didn’t want to get my hopes up. If this was one sided I didn’t want to go confessing my feelings before the battle like some lovesick idiot. That would be embarrassing. And so I stayed quiet.
Tumblr media
The quinjet finally approaches the city and I stood up to get ready for the impending fight. There’s already aliens flying around and I can see things getting destroyed from inside the jet.
“Stark we’re on your three heading Northeast,” Natasha says as the jet dips toward the left.
“What did you stop for drive-thru?” Tony sassed.
I rolled my eyes. “Yeah we did. Got a double quarter pounder with cheese in here when this is all done.” If he wanted to play that game then I would too.
“Oh hush Lilah. Swing up Park I’m gonna lay them out for you.”
I shrugged as the gun dropped from the bottom of our jet and started to rapidly fire at the aliens. We took them out rather easy. Looking out the window I noticed Loki and Thor fighting. “Well that doesn’t seem like a friendly brotherly competition to me,” I mumbled.
Steve chuckled softly. “No it does not.”
The jet turned to face Stark Tower, firing at Loki. Not that any of the shots actually landed. His unfortunately was spot on and took out our engine.
“Fuck me.”
“Lilah!”
“What?! We’re about to crash land. Seems like the perfect moment to be allowed to say whatever I want.” I grabbed onto the roof and swung as we went careening toward the ground.
Luckily, the crash wasn’t as bad as I expected and we were all okay as we went running out the back of the now-destroyed jet. I looked up at the sky as a roar sounded. It was one of the most terrifying things I had ever heard. There was this large gaping hole in the sky that lead to some place in space, blue energy pulsed from the sides.
That wasn’t what made it all so frightening.
It was the extremely large, massive, huge, monstrous serpent like creature that was coming out of the hole that was horrifying. The thing was bigger than anything I had ever seen before and more of the Chutari were popping off the side of it onto the buildings around us.
“I stand corrected. This is a more appropriate time. Fuck me.”
Steve either didn’t hear me or decided to ignore me as he looked around at all the aliens. “Stark are you seeing this.”
“Seeing. Still working on believing.”
“Yeah, I get that. I’ve had some jacked up nightmares over the years, but these guys make those murderous clowns seem like sweet innocent puppies.” I noticed Clint staring at me and shrug. “What?”
“Murderous clowns?” He raised a brow.
“It’s a thing. Leave me alone.”
Stark snorts as he listens to us. “Where’s Banner? Has he shown up yet?”
“Banner?” Steve asked.
“Just keep me posted.”
Tumblr media
Lightning came crashing down striking some of the aliens in front of me. “Thor!” I beamed. After he had fallen from the Hellicarrier I had been worried. Seeing him fight Loki and now having him here in front of me put me at ease.
“Lady Lilah.” Thor smiles softly before turning to Steve.
“What’s the story upstairs?” He asked
The smile fell from the god’s face and he sighed. “The power surrounding the cube is impenetrable.”
“Thor’s right. We gotta deal with these guys,” Tony said.
I looked around and hugged myself. “Sure only like a million of them against the six of us.”
Natasha glanced at me with a look of ‘you aren’t wrong’ on her face. “How do we do this?”
Steve kept looking up at the sky. “As a team.”
“I have unfinished business with Loki.”
I walked over and bonked Thor on the head. Now wasn’t the time for his brotherly rivalry or whatever the hell he wanted to call it.
Clint fiddled with his arrows and snorted. “Yeah? Well, get in line.”
I shot him a scathing look. “Barton don’t make me come over there and shove my foot up your ass.”
“Save it.” Steve started walking toward him. “Loki’s going to keep this fight focused on us and that’s what we need. Without him these things could run wild.” He stopped and turned to look back. “We got Stark up top. He’s gonna need us to-”
A motorcycle pulling up cut him off. I laughed softly. “That thing’s a little small don’t you think?” I looked Bruce over as he climbed off the bike.
The whole team was here now. It was now the seven of us against an alien army. Maybe we wouldn’t win, but we were for damn sure going to try.
Steve started to give out orders, “Alright listen up, until we can close that portal our priority is containment. Barton, I want you on that roof. Eyes on everything. Call out patterns and strays. Stark, you got the perimeter. Anything gets more than three blocks out you turn it back or you turn it to ash.”
Clint looked to Tony. “Wanna give me a lift?”
“Better clench up Legolas.”
I giggled and shook my head. “Only you, Tony.”
“Thor, you gotta try and bottleneck that portal. Try and slow them down. You’ve got the lightning, light the bastards up.” Steve looked to me and Natasha next. “We stay on the ground. Keep the fighting here. And Hulk?” He looked to the big green guy. “Smash.”
The orders seemed relatively simple. I nodded and went running to take on a group of the aliens not that far off. I tied them up with some vines and everything seemed to be going well.
“Lilah!” I heard Natasha yell. But I turned too late. One of the transportation devices was coming straight for me and I couldn’t move in time.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn Part 2
Tumblr media
A/N: My masterlist is in my bio. If you like this go check it out. I write for a multitude of fandoms
Summary: Fury sent Lilah to recruit Steve for the team. He agrees, but they’re left with some questions after their meeting
Pairing: Steve x reader
Warnings: some language, let the secret pinning begin
Word Count: 1073
Blue eyes clashed with hazel as Steve turned toward me. Those blue eyes were more beautiful than anything I had ever seen in my life. Pictures had not done them justice. It wasn’t even the muscles, which were very nice, that drew me in. It was those deep blue orbs. I had thought him cute and adorable when I had seen pictures of him before the serum. Now that I was face to well chest really-he towered over me- with him I realized he was more than cute and adorable. He was handsome and gorgeous.
It was like when God decided to make Steven Grant Rogers he threw both cute and sexy into the mixing pot and I certainly wasn’t complaining. What single...hell, married straight or bisexual woman would complain? If they did, I'd have to have their head examined.
I smiled softly as he approached me. “Again I am sorry to disturb you. I’m sure you have a lot to work through and the last thing you need is someone you don’t know coming in here and asking you things.”
Steve smiled and used a towel to wipe the sweat from his neck and face. “Well at least it’s you and not Fury. He would be a lot more cryptic or demanding. So what is it you want to ask? Want me back out in the world?” He sipped some water.
I took a seat and slid a file toward him. “Unfortunately I’m asking you to help save it. The Tesseract was stolen by someone named Loki. The brother of Thor, prince of Asgard, god of thunder. Now personally I think the stupid cube should have been left in the depths of the ocean. It’s trouble and way more power than a human has a right to go messing around with. But hey I’m a grunt and I don’t make the decisions around here.” I wished I did, but I didn’t.
He took the file and opened it. He flipped through it casually, barely looking at the information. “I stopped one mad man bent on ruling the world with this thing. I suppose I should help stop another.” He tapped his fingers on the table.
I could feel his eyes on me as he looked me over. It wasn’t in some creepy way, more of a trying to figure me out and what place I fit in with all of this. “Ask what’s on your mind Captain. I don’t mind?” I gave a soft smile to let him know I was an open book.
“Why you? Why did Fury send you and not come himself?”
“Honestly I have no idea. He said it was because we grew up in the same city and I hate bullies, but that seemed cryptic and only touched the surface of the truth.”
He shook his head. “Why am I not surprised?” He took another drink of water. “Clearly there’s something about you that he thought would help you convince me.”
“Captain-”
“Steve. Call me Steve.”
“Alright, Steve.” I like the sound of that much more. “The truth is I think you’d be a big help. You know more about the cube than we do. You fought the man who found it and used it to create weapons. However I also think we’re asking too much of you. You just came out of the ice. All you’ve lost is still fresh in your mind. It wasn’t seventy years for you. It’s been a few weeks.” I sighed. “You should be left alone to process and work through it in your own time. And not by busting punching bags either. But that’s not my call. Fury gave me an order and I’m here to ask for you help.”
He raised a brow and leaned back in his seat. “Oh yeah? You don’t want me helping?” His curiosity was peeked.
I laughed softly. “I didn’t say that. I very much want you to help, but not at the expense of your mental health. But the truth is the other agents aren’t qualified or even capable of taking down a man like Loki. He’s strong, smart, and has one up on us. Now I’m not exactly normal. That much I know you gathered from my file, but I’m one person. I’m not a match for him on my own. With your help though, I believe we can catch him. And with Stark’s...God help us...assistance we can find the Tesseract. That’s also why Bruce is being called in. He knows Gamma like no one else.”
Steve hummed and looked down at the file. It was like he was staring a hole into it. If he wasn’t careful the damn thing would catch on fire from the heat of his intense gaze. “I’ll help. It’s the right thing to do. I wanted to save the world from Hydra, Red Skull, that cube. I went into the ice to save New York and the world. It looks like my fight isn’t quite over yet.”
I reached out to touch his hand in a comforting manner, but pulled back at the last second. We didn’t really know each other and I was afraid to get to comfortable with him. “I’m glad to be fighting along side you. And since I’m calling you Steve, you can call me Lilah.”
“Lilah Shaw...it’s nice to meet you.” His large hand engulfed mine and felt warm. Much warmer than a normal person would. My hand started to glow a soft green and I jerked it back.
“It’s nice to meet you too Steve Rogers.” I smiled and fiddled with my hands. What was that? My powers hadn’t acted up in years. Not since I first gained control of them and now one touch from Steve and they’re acting up. What the hell was Fury not telling me? I knew without a shadow of a doubt that this was most likely the reason he wanted me to meet Steve, but why I didn’t know.
He frowned a bit. “What’s wrong? Why was your hand doing that?”
I sighed heavily and lifted my gaze. “I’m not sure really. They’ve never done that before. I’ve had control for years. I’m sorry. I should go. You need to pack and get ready for the mission. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I gave him one last smile and darted out of there like the devil himself was on my heels.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn
Tumblr media
A/N: If you like this series check out my masterlist in my bio for more.
Summary: The attack on the Hellicarrier left Lilah unconscious and dreaming of her past. But does it give her answers or only more questions?
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: violence, mentions of torture, slow burn, language
Word Count: 1075
I groaned softly as I came to. Everything hurt and I didn’t understand what was going on. The last thing I could remember was that I was on the way home from the movies. I had gone by myself because my parents were busy and my friend was home sick with a nasty stomach virus. But none of that explained the pain I felt now. Not in the least bit!
I moved to sit up and realized I couldn’t. I was strapped down by something. “What the…” I looked up and saw that my arms were cuffed to a table, a cold steel medical table. There was an IV going into my arm. I couldn’t tell what was in the bag, but it certainly didn’t look like saline.
I began to panic. I thrashed as best I could, trying to get free. “Help! Someone help me!” I screamed at the top of my lungs. My heart was beating so loud I could hear it pounding in my ears. My body felt like it was on fire and all I wanted to do was cry. Tears poured down my face as I sobbed and begged for help.
“Tsk. You aren’t getting out of here anytime soon Miss Shaw. You see you were all alone. A perfect candidate and an easy target for our little experiment here,” a man with a heavy German accent said.
I sniffled and gazed at him in fear. “What do you mean experiment? What are you going to do to me? What are you putting into me?” I tried to pull free again, but I couldn’t do it. I was well and truly tied down to the table. It seemed I was at the mercy of the German man.
He smiled as he came to a stop, standing over top of me. “Trust me, you’ll thank us when we’re done. You’ll be stronger, faster; more capable of doing things. We’re going to make you into a super soldier.”
Tumblr media
They finally let me out of the restraints after pumping me full of some kind of chemical and torturing me. At least that was what it had felt like. My whole body had been in agony and I thought I was going to die.
I wasn’t sure what it was they had given me, but it had been painful. I wasn’t sure why they were doing this to me other than they said I was part of some kind of experiment; that they were making me a super soldier. They had given me more than one dose of the chemical and then tossed me into some machine and hit me with radiation-or so I assumed-until I was screaming bloody murder. Once they released me, I was put back in restraints.
Until now. I was eventually let go.
I sighed heavily and took in my surroundings as I was finally able to sit up. I noticed a scalpel on the small medical tray next to me. Without much thought I grabbed it and attacked the man who was bringing me lunch. I didn’t care. I simply wanted to be free.
I ran through the building, scared and hurt. Normally I wouldn’t run from a fight, but these men had weapons and they had already hurt me once. I feared what they would do to me if they caught me. “Stop. Leave me alone!” I cried when I realized I had come to the edge of a platform.
When I had woken up in some strange compound I didn’t know what was going on or where I was. I had put up a short fight in the beginning, but then more men came and the realization that I couldn’t win this one sat in. I had taken off running, bare feet pounding on the floor. I managed to get lost as I didn’t know the place and now I was cornered. My foot slid off the edge and I whimpered as I caught my balance.
“Be a good girl and come this way,” one of the men said.
“No. Go away.” I shook my head and whimpered again.
The man took a step forward and my foot slipped once more. I screamed in fright. My arms reached out to try and grab something but it was pointless, there was nothing for me to grab onto. I plunged into a vat of green liquid. My lungs filled quickly and I couldn’t breath. I fought to get to the surface. My vision blurred and I thought for sure this was the end.
Tumblr media
“Fuck,” I groaned and rolled to the side. The last thing I wanted was to be reliving how I had gotten my powers. The Hellicarrier was under attack. I had much more important things to deal with right now, but the blow to the head I had taken had knocked me out.
I pushed myself to my feet and even though it made my head pound I went running through the tunnels looking for the rest of my team. They were all in danger. “Steve? Captain can you hear me?”
“Yeah I hear you Shaw. I’m a little busy right now.”
“Where are you?”
“Outside near the turbine.”
I took off sprinting and arrived just in time. Steve was hanging precariously off the edge of the Hellicarrier with a man coming toward him. I used vine to grab the man and throw him from the ship. Quickly I pulled Steve back up and he flipped a switch.
“You okay?” I asked softly, looking him over. But before he could answer Tony showed up and blasted someone away from us. I looked him over and chuckled. “You’ve seen better days Stark.”
“Yeah, well so have you. You’ve got a bit of blood there on your head.” He pointed to my temple.
I frowned and wiped it off. It wasn’t the first time I had been hurt as an agent and after remembering my past it wasn’t even the worst pain I had ever been in.
I sighed heavily. Was that the connection between Steve and me? Did something to do with the serum connect me to him? If so how were we connected and why? I seemed to have even more questions now than I did before.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn part 8
Tumblr media
Summary: Things come to an exploding head as the whole team argues
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: language, some violence, slow burn
Word Count: 1144
Apparently my glare wasn’t enough to deter Fury from lying. He moved closer to us. “Rogers, we gathered everything related to the Tesseract. This does not mean that we-”
“Yeah I have a hard time believing that. You gave me access to keep me from asking questions because you wanted me to trust you. And I did, but you’ve broken that trust.” I crossed my arms and stared him down.
Tony nodded. “I’m sorry Nick, but I’m on her side.” He spun a screen around to show something that looked like a missile schematic. “What? Were you lying?”
I shook my head. “Of all the things. I looked at you like a father. I trusted and looked up to you. To Maria. And all this time you’ve been lying to me. Makes me wonder what you know about me that you haven’t told me.”
Since the moment he had sent me to recruit Steve something seemed off. Now I knew something was. He knew something about me and my connection to the super soldier and he wasn’t saying a word. It infuriated me and the betrayal I had felt when we found the weapons was even stronger now.
Steve gently touched my arm in a comforting manner and glared at Fury. “I was wrong director. The world hasn’t changed a bit.”
I tried to smile, but it fell the moment Natasha walked in with Thor. She was someone else I had trusted. I wondered if she knew about Phase two and had kept me in the dark as well.
“Did you know about this?” Bruce asked the same question I had been seconds away from asking myself.
“You want to think about removing yourself from this environment doctor?” Natasha answered his question with one of her own. It was a deflection; one to keep her from having to tell the truth.
I knew what she was doing, I had seen her do it many times. She kept the attention on others instead of herself and what she was up to. Her blatant disregard for Bruce’s question told me all I needed to know. She knew about Phase Two and had also kept me in the dark. Was there anyone I could actually trust? Was there anyone that hadn’t lied to me? I was beginning to think the pseudo family I had was all a lie. Once again I was lost and alone.
I felt like I was drowning in a pool of darkness. A pool built of lies, betrayal, and pain. I tried to claw my way out, but I was drowning. My ears were ringing and I had blocked out everything going on around me. My breathing started to pick up and it felt like my chest was way too tight. My hands were shaking and my heart was racing.
A strong hand on my shoulder slightly grounded me. I looked up into Steve’s eyes and tried to breath with him. He placed my hand on his chest and let me feel his breathing to help regulate my own.
“Are you okay now?” He asked softly.
I nodded. “Yeah. Just a moment of anxiety. I’m not handling what Fury and company did very well. I’m gonna sit down.” I made my way to the corner of the room and took a seat. Closing my eyes I listened to the argument resume itself. Apparently my panic attack wasn’t enough to dissipate the anger everyone was feeling.
As soon as I was out of the way everyone was back at each other’s throats.
Bruce moved one of the screens and pointed at it with his glasses, but his eyes were on the people in the room. “I want to know why SHIELD is using the Tesseract to build weapons of mass destruction.”
“You and me both big guy,” I whispered and fixed Fury with a pointed stare.
“Because of him,” Fury pointed at Thor.
I raised a brow, looking just as confused as the God of Thunder. The guy was a giant puppy really. Sure he could easily kick someone’s ass, but he was as sweet and soft as they come. I had seen how curious he was about things here on earth. So what did he have to do with building weapons?
“Me?” Thor asked softly.
Fury took a few steps and began talking about what happened in New Mexico last year when Thor was here. I rolled my eyes and laid back on one of the tables. I didn’t feel like listening to anymore of his nonsense. Just because aliens were a thing and could easily come to earth didn’t mean we needed to use alien technology to build weapons.
The damn thing was probably a beacon! It had brought Loki to earth. If other ‘gods’ or space inhabitants knew of its existence and location, then using the cube was asking for trouble. I would have told Fury that if he had bothered to even ask me. But nope! I was left out of the loop and now we had a murdering psychopath on our hands, the cube was who knows where, and everyone was arguing.
I decided I was going to block it out and wait for them to stop measuring their cocks like teenage frat boys. All except Natasha who didn’t have a cock. She, however, was still part of the pointless fighting that was going on. And I was one girl that wasn’t going to take part. In fact I was happily daydreaming about swimming in a hot spring with all sorts of flowers, bushes, and trees surrounding it. It was my happy place, the one place that I could go to when everything got to be too much.
It wasn’t until a nearby computer started making a lot of noise that I finally tuned back in. I rolled on my side and looked to see what was going on.
“Sorry kids you don’t get to see my party trick after all.” Bruce walked over to the computer that was showing the cube’s location.
“You’ve located the Tesseract,” Thor said.
I jumped up and stretched. It seemed like it was time for us to get to work.
“I can get there faster,” Tony pointed out like that was the most important thing.
I rolled my eyes and looked up at Thor as he began to speak. “The Tesseract belongs on Asgard. No human is a match for it.”
I hummed softly. He did have a point. One I completely agreed with. I opened my mouth to say something when the lab exploded and I went flying. I hit my head and landed in a heap as the world turned black.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn Part 1
Tumblr media
A/N: This is the first part in the series. I’m not sure how many parts it will be yet, but a new part will come out every Sunday. I don’t have a taglist for this yet, but if you wish to be tagged in just this or be on my forever tags just send me an ask
Summary: Lilah is an agent of SHIELD. For years she’s had powers that only a select few knows how she came by. She’s had them under control for sometime. But there’s something about the blue-eyed captain that makes them go crazy and pulls her in. Just what is their connection and what will come of it?
Pairing: Steve Rogers x OC
Warnings: Some language. Nothing major.
Possible future warnings: violence, torture, maybe smut(it’s like I can’t avoid it when it comes to a series)
Word Count: 1131
Pain. White hot, blinding, intense pain. Every nerve was on fire. It felt like my skin was literally going to melt off my bones. It was such a bone deep, throbbing searing pain. And it was all I felt. I wanted to scream and cry, but my throat was raw and my eyes drier than the desert. I honestly felt like I was dying and at this point I would have welcomed death. Anything to make this stop.
But I couldn’t. There was something I had to do. Something I had to finish. I wasn’t entirely sure what it was at this point because my brain was fuzzy from the pain. I tried to think and figure it out. Remember what had led up to this point. What was it I was supposed to be doing?
“Lilah? Lilah do you come in?” There was a faint voice in my ear. Someone was calling my name...or at least I thought that was what was happening. My ears were ringing and I could only just make out the worried tone coming through my earpiece. That’s when everything started to come back. But I couldn’t move and I didn’t have the strength to answer the person who was now screaming in my ear.

Right. Left. Duck. Haymaker. Right. Left. Dodge. Right. Left. Uppercut.
Shadow boxing was one of my favorite workouts. It got the heart racing, worked the muscles, and helped me stay on top of my game. While kickboxing wasn’t the only tool in my tactical belt it did come in handy. Especially when I was trying to be more covert and not let people know about my powers.
Nick Fury had managed to find me after a few slip ups taking out some neighborhood criminals. I apparently wasn’t flying as well under the radar as I thought, but it didn’t matter. Now I had a good paying job as a shield agent. I had high security clearance. I was trusted and best of all I was getting to do what I wanted...take down bullies.
“Agent Shaw...a moment.”
I pulled my headphones out and turned to Nick. “Yes, Director Fury?”
Nick crossed his arms and sighed heavily. “We need...I need you to speak to Captain Rogers. If anyone can get him to come in it’ll be you.”
I frowned. “Me?Why me?" I grabbed my water bottle and took a big gulp. “If you don’t mind me asking, Sir.”
He gave that smile, the one that says he knows more than he’s letting on. “Because you both grew up in the same town and you both hate bullies.”
“As you say Sir.” I sat the water bottle down and took the file he was holding out. I flipped through it and hummed. I knew what he was proposing...the Avengers initiative. I had only agreed to join it if he actually went through with it. And now it seemed he was. All because of the Tesseract.
From the moment they had found that stupid thing I thought they were making a mistake. It was clearly not from our planet, it had way too much power, Hydra had used it to make weapons, and SHIELD assumed they could control it. I had called bullshit, but no one listened to me. That was a mistake. The thing had acted up and was now in the hands of Loki.
The man had killed so many members of SHIELD. People I considered friends. The building holding the Tesseract had disappeared. It was gone and the man responsible had taken someone I considered family. Clint had been compromised and I wanted him back. Just as I knew Natasha would want him back.
We had to pull out the big guns on this one. And by big guns I meant Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, Bruce Banner, and myself. No doubt Natasha would join us to get Clint back and while she had a unique set of skills she was still human. She didn’t have a suit like Tony, didn’t turn into another person like Bruce, didn’t have super soldier serum like Steve, and she definitely couldn’t do what I did. But she would be a good addition to the team if we could get everyone together.
I grabbed my gym bag and headed home. Before going to Steve, I was taking a shower and thinking this over. I needed to say the right thing to get him to agree. He had been through a tragic ordeal and Fury wasn’t exactly giving the guy a chance to adjust.
Steve had only been awake for a short time. For him mentally he was still back in the 40s, in the war. He was most likely still having nightmares and flashbacks. Personally I thought the poor guy should be left alone for a bit longer. However it wasn’t my call and the only thing I could do is tread lightly and hope that I didn’t say the wrong thing.
As hot water poured over my body I looked up at the ceiling. Fury thought I was the right one to do this, that I was like Steve. But the way he had said it, that smile on his face made me think there was more to this. Yeah, I had grown up in the same city, hated bullies, got in more fights than I could count before even graduating high school, but what else was there?
Was he talking about the fact that Steve and I were both stronger than the average person, that we both had a strong moral sense of right and wrong? I groaned and started washing my hair. I was too tired to try and figure out Fury’s cryptic messages. Besides I had my own problems to worry about.
I finished my shower and headed to the gym I knew Steve would be at as quick as I could. I could hear the tale-tell thump, thump, thump of someone hitting a punching bag before I even took two steps into the place. I watched for a moment as sand went flying through the air. The punching bag was destroyed.
Steve hung another one and went back to hitting it. He was so tense and into beating the bag that it was obvious to anyone with half a brain that he was working through something. I felt bad for disturbing him, but orders were orders.
“Steve...I’m sorry to bother you. I’m Agent Shaw. I was hoping we could talk for a moment.”
My breath caught in my throat as the most dazzling pair of blue eyes I had ever seen locked with my hazel. I was in trouble and I knew it. What I didn’t know was what kind of trouble or how much.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn Part 5
Tumblr media
A/N: Reposting this part because for some reason the page breaks weren’t in there where they were supposed to be and every time I tried to edit it wouldn’t show up. Sorry guys
Summary: Thor makes his presence known and Lilah reveals a bit of her past
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: Men being stupid. Still a slow burn I suppose
Word Count: 1331
I glanced at Loki and my mind kept going over how this was all way too damn easy. We shouldn’t have been able to take him down like we did. Something wasn’t adding up and it was bugging me. I glared at a spot on the floor and crossed my arms.
“I don’t like this,” Steve whispered
“What?” Tony glanced at him.
He looked at Tony. “I remember the bad guys packing a bigger wallop.”
He hummed. “True, but you are pretty spry for an old man. What do you do, Pilates?”
Steve looked at him like he wanted to smack him. I rolled my eyes and bounced my leg some more. If they wanted to argue then so be it. I thought it was stupid and I wasn’t about to get involved.
A burst of lightning had me lifting my head. “Nat?”
“I’m not sure where this storm came from.” She started flipping switches and doing her best to control the jet.
Steve noticed how Loki flinched when the lightning flashed. “What? Scared of a little lightning?”
“I’m not overly fond of what follows.”
I jumped up. That explained the suddenness of the storm. It hadn’t taken me long to figure out, but I felt a bit like a dunce for not realizing it sooner. I had met Thor down in Mexico. I knew what he was capable of and I knew this storm had to be because of him.
A thump on top of the quinjet let me know I was right. Nat opened the bay door and the god of thunder himself came walking onto the jet. “Thor,” I said softly, but he didn’t seem to hear me.
I watched as he shoved Tony back and took off with Loki. “Well great,” I grumbled. I had a good idea why Thor was doing this, but I was a little peeved that he wasn’t thinking things through. Just taking Loki without so much as a word to any of us was stupid and it made me want to smack him over the head.
“We need a plan,” Steve said.
I glanced over at them. “I’ve got an idea. Let me handle this.”
“No can do kid. I have a plan...attack.” Tony took off after Thor.
I threw my hands up and screamed in aggravation. “Men! I swear I’m gonna beat both of them over the freaking head. I am. I’m just gonna pick up a baseball bat and go to town. Maybe then they’ll have some sense in those things they call heads. I mean honestly both of them are smart. Why is it so hard for them to think this through?! Huh Nat? Can you tell me?”
She cleared her throat and pointed. I watched as Steve jumped out of the quinjet next. “You’ve got to be kidding?!”
I went running and jumped out of the jet after them. Not bothering with a parachute at all. I used my powers to help me land safely in a tree. The leaves and branches cushioning the impact. “Now boys let’s talk about this.”
Steve ignored me and threw his shield between Tony and Thor. The two men looked up. “That’s enough.”
I hopped down out of the tree. “Yeah it is. We can talk about this like sensible adults.”
“He took Loki. I don’t like when people take my things,” Tony grumbled.
I narrowed my eyes, picked up a branch, and bonked him over the head. “Shut it Tony or I shove this where the sun doesn’t shine.”
“You want me to put the hammer down?” It would seem that while I was chastising Tony for acting like a child Steve and Thor had been having a conversation.
Tony huffed. “Yeah, bad idea. He loves his-”
A smack from the hammer sent him flying and Thor leapt into the air. His hammer hit Steve’s shield causing a loud echo and knocked all of us on our asses while also knocking down the surrounding trees.
“For the love of God will you quit measuring your cocks already?!” I yelled.
Steve blushed heavily, but his cowl masked most of it. He mumbled something and looked to the ground. It was then that Thor seemed to notice me for the first time.
“Lady Lilah of the forest,” he said, smiling.
I shook my head. “Don’t call me that. Just Lilah is fine, but seriously look what you did?” I gestured to the forest.
Thor looked around and frowned. “Oh I am very sorry. You’re right we shouldn’t have been arguing like we were. It seems my brother has sent the Tesseract off and I know little of what he has planned. It is best we get back on your flying contraption and head to your...base?”
“Base is correct and yes that is what we need to do.” I dusted off and sighed.
Tumblr media
Steve shuffled a bit and took a seat next to me. “Why did he call you Lady Lilah of the forest?”
I chuckled softly. “Calling me lady comes natural to him. The ‘of the forest’ part has to do with my powers. You saw footage of me right? You know what it is I can do.”
“I saw you grow plants from nothing. Your hands glow a grass green. If you’re under a certain amount of heat all of you glows.”
I nodded. “Yes, and I have the ability to heal small injuries. Much like plants in nature. I can be helpful or I can be harmful. Now do you understand?”
“I get it, but how do you know Thor? When did you meet him?” Steve looked down at me with curiosity shining in his beautiful blue eyes. I felt myself get lost in them as memories of a not so distant past swirled in my head.
Tumblr media
Coulson had recently finished questioning the big blonde hunk of a man who broke into our temporary base and didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. So when he left I decided to give it a shot. I walked in and sat down across from him, looking him over.
“So big guy what’s your name?”
Thor lifted his head and looked at me. “Did they send you to question me?”
I shook my head. “Nah. I saw how much of a botch Phil was making of it so I thought I would come talk to you. So Mjolnir is yours right? That must make you, Thor.”
He blinked. “You know who I am? You believe me?”
I hummed softly. “Yes and no. I know the stories, recognize the hammer, and you were pretty intent on getting her and yet you couldn’t. So part of me wonders.”
“I was banished from home and I’m no longer worthy of her. So there you have your answer.”
He looked so sad and it broke my heart. “Oh you poor thing. Well I can’t make you worthy of her, but I can help clean you up.” I walked over to him and let my soft glowing hands run over his cut. “There.”
“How...what are you?”
I made a small flower grow and held it out. “Your guess is as good as mine, but I have powers that I use for good.”
He took the flower and stared at it. “Like a spirit of the forest. What is your name kind Lady?”
“Lilah. My name is Lilah.”
“Lady Lilah of the forest, I thank you for your kindness.”
Tumblr media
“The name has stuck ever since.” I smiled softly.
Natasha chuckled. “Even some of us call her that from time to time.”
Steve hummed softly. “I think it suits you.” He patted my hand and this time his heat came through making my hand glow.
“Really need to figure that out.” I mumbled as I watch my extremity illuminate.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn Part 3
Tumblr media
Summary: Almoat everyone arrives on the Hellicarrier and Lilah has a bit of a flashback
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: hints at violence, still technically a slowburn I suppose(never was sure how many words it took for it to be considered slow burn)
Word Count: 1083
Steve watched the videos on the tablet Coulson had given him. He had read everyone’s files, but actually watching the videos was something else. Seeing the Hulk as he smashed through things and jumped around, destroy a tank as if it was child’s play made him wonder. “So he was trying to replicate the formula?”
“A lot of people did. You were the first hero. People wanted to be like you, but when he isn’t that...thing, the guy’s like a Stephen Hawking,” Coulson said.
Steve looked at him in confusion.
I had to chuckle. “A genius. Stephen Hawking is a genius. A world known one at that. When we get a chance I’ll show you some videos and work with helping you figure out some more about this time.”
He smiled softly and nodded. “I’d appreciate that.”
“I watched you sleep. I mean I was there after they pulled you from the ice.” Coulson smiled sheepishly.
I laughed, shaking my head. “You’re such a dork Phil. Such a dork.”
Steve walked to the front of the helicopter as it grew closer to its destination. “So you really think I’m the one to help with this?”
He nodded. “I do. I even had a little input on the suit.”
“Aren’t the Stars and Stripes a little...old fashioned?”
“Captain, the things that are about to come to light. I think a little old fashioned is exactly what we need.”
I walked up behind him and touched his shoulder. My hand started to glow again and I pulled it back. “Like I told you yesterday I don’t think you should have to help, but we need your help.”
“Agent Shaw is right. We need your help more than you know.” Coulson glanced at me with a raised brow. I could tell what he was thinking. I shrugged. ‘I don’t know,’ I mouthed to him.
The helicopter landed and we all climbed off. I spotted Bruce and headed his way. Steve followed after me.
“Word is you can find the cube,” He said.
Bruce looked extremely nervous and like this was the last place he wanted to be. “And is that...the only word on me?”
“Only word I care about.”
I clapped Bruce in the shoulder. “It’s gonna be okay. I promise. We just need your help finding the cube. Once we do you’re free to go. We aren’t after the other guy.” At least I didn’t think so. I knew Fury want the Hulk on the team, but he had claimed he was only asking Bruce here to find the cube.
“You’re Lilah aren’t you?” He looked me over. “I’ve seen videos of you. Where did your powers come from?”
“I’ve been wondering that myself. Where did they come from?” Steve’s blue eyes landed on me once more.
Natasha came up. “You boys might want to step inside. It’s going to get a lot harder to breath.”
I took that moment to go running off. The last thing I wanted to do was explain my powers. It was something that very few people knew about. Fury, Coulson, Hill, Clint, and Natasha were it. And it wasn’t that I didn’t trust Steve, but I didn’t know him that well. For now I wanted to keep my secrets to myself.
Tumblr media
I ran through the building, scared and hurt. Normally I wouldn’t run from a fight, but these men had weapons, they seemed organized and they knew what they were doing.
Tumblr media
“Hey kid,” Natasha’s voice brought me out of my thoughts.
I looked up at her. “I’m not a kid Nat. I’m the same age as Steve. Or rather his age when he went into the ice.”
She smiled. “True, but you were a kid when Fury brought you in.” She sat down beside me. “Why’d you take off? What’s bothering you?”
I sighed and looked at my hands. “I hate how easily you know what’s going on with me,” I grumbled. “For some reason every time I touch Steve my hands glow. It’s like my powers go haywire and I don’t understand why. I took off because I’m not ready to talk about where they came from just yet.”
“Well maybe it’s the heat his body puts off. The serum makes him run hot.”
“Yeah, but it’s not like he’s a heat lamp or the sun,” I mumbled.
She hummed. “No, but you aren’t used to touching people as warm as him either. And perhaps it has something to do with how your powers came to be.”
“I suppose you’re right. But right now we have more pressing issues than trying to figure out why my powers go crazy when I touch Steve.”
She nodded. “We do. Bruce is trying to find the cube and all our computers are scanning for Loki. If he’s seen we’ll know and we can track him down. He won’t get away with what he’s done.” She closed her eyes.
I hugged her tight. “We’ll get him back. We’ll get Clint back. I promise. He’s like a big brother to me. I’m not letting Loki keep him,” I promised.
Nat laughed softly. “I can imagine it now. You giving him all he can take in the sarcasm game and then using your powers on him.”
I grinned. “I’d do it too, but we have to find Loki first.”
“We will. It shouldn’t take long.”

Every Rose Has Its Thorn Part 6
Tumblr media
Summary: Loki gets locked up and a little more of Lilah’s past is revealed
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: some language, mentions of violence, slowburn
Word Count:1280
As soon as the quintet landed back on the Hellicarrier I darted off to my room to get out of my suit. Steve had once again asked me how I came to have my powers and I still wasn’t ready to answer that question. I wasn’t sure when I would be, but it wasn’t now. We hadn’t known each other long enough for me to feel comfortable in telling him everything about myself.
I changed as quick as I could and dashed back to the bridge. I took a seat at the table and watched the video of the other agents placing Loki in his cell. Fury was with him and you knew that they were going to have an interesting conversation.
The hatch under Loki’s glass cell opened up. It was a very long drop back down to earth. I didn’t even want to imagine how far of a drop or how bad the body would be destroyed when the cage hit the ground. I shook that thought away and decided it was probably best I listened to Fury.
“30,000 feet straight down in a steel trap. You get how that works? Ant,” he gestured to Loki, “boot,” he gestured to the control panel.
“It’s an impressive cage. Not built, I think, for me.” Loki smirked and walked backwards.
I snorted and crossed my arms. That was obvious. The freaking cage was built before Loki had became a threat.
“Built for something much stronger than you,” Fury replied.
“Oh I’ve heard.” He looked to the camera. “A mindless beast makes play he’s still a man.”
I growled softly. “Show him mindless beast,” I mumbled. I liked Bruce a good deal, considered him a colleague and possibly a friend. I didn’t like Loki coming in here and trash taking him.
“How desperate are you? You call on such lost creatures…”
I tuned the rest of that out and closed my eyes. Lost. I was lost once. I’m not lost anymore. I have control, I know who I am.
Tumblr media
I wandered the streets, soaking wet, and jumping at every little noise. I tried to keep my hands hidden as they wouldn’t stop glowing. I was scared, alone, lost. Something in me had changed and I wasn’t sure why or what had happened. All I knew was I had to get away.
Waking up had hurt and I had coughed up some strange colored liquid. Where had that came from? I couldn’t remember much. Just the need to run, to get away. And that was what I had done. It was how I ended up down some back alley in some weird city with people that spoke a completely different language than I did.
I couldn’t ask for help. I didn’t understand a thing the people around me were saying. I was lost and all alone. I heard something fall behind me and whipped around, but there was nothing there. Turning back around I bumped into someone. “I’m s-sorry. I-I didn’t mean to.”
“It’s alright kid. Let’s get you somewhere warm and safe. I’m Clint by the way.”
“Lilah. Lilah Rose Shaw.” It was the only thing I remembered at the time and I clung to it.
Clint smiled. “Well Lilah Rose Shaw, I’m here to help you.”
Tumblr media
“An army...from outer space,” Steve said.
I finally came back to reality and hummed. “Aliens. Oh goody that’s exactly what I wanted to deal with. Because the movies make them look so cute and cuddly,” I grumbled.
Steve couldn’t help the small smile that played on his lips. No, an alien army wasn’t something to make light of, but who didn’t enjoy a good dose of sarcasm?
“So he’s building another portal.” Bruce took off his glasses. “That’s why he needs Selving.”
“Selving?” Thor looked over curiously.
I nodded. “Yeah, that Selving. Loki took him and Clint when he took the Tesseract.”
Natasha sighed heavily at the mention of Clint. “Loki has them under some kind of spell.”
“I want to know why Loki let us take him. He’s not leading an army from here,” Steve pointed out.
“Thank you!” I threw my arms up. Everyone stared at me. “I’ve been trying to figure that out since the moment we took him. The whole think stinks to me and I think mister god of mischief is up to something. I don’t like it and I’m glad someone else said it. So stop staring at me like I’m a crazy person.”
Steve took my hand and smiled softly. “You aren’t crazy. You and I both have a genuine curiosity.”
I barely even heard the conversation going on around. I was too focused on my hand glowing once more. I watched it for a moment. What was it about Steve that made my powers go nuts?
“He was adopted…” Thor said in a small voice like that meant he was allowed to defend Loki and explained everything.
I smiled apologetically. “Sorry big guy that doesn’t excuse what he’s done. Your brother is acting like a mad man. Something happened to him after the two of you fought.”
He sighed heavily and nodded. “You aren’t wrong. I do believe something happened, but what I cannot be sure Lady Lilah.”
“I think it’s about the mechanics. What do they need the iridium for?” Bruce was trying to get everyone back on topic. We needed to talk about more important things than Loki’s mind.
“It’s a stabilizing agent.” Tony finally came walking in. He was no longer wearing the Ironman suit. “Means portal won’t collapse on itself like it did back at SHIELD.”
I tapped my fingers on the table and hummed. If the portal could be opened for as long as Loki wanted then who knew what things he would bring through or how many. That was my main worry. If he brought an alien army through the portal just how many of them would there be? Was it something we could face if we worked together?
I leaned my head back and stared up at the ceiling. Become an agent he said, it’ll be fun, he said. You’ll learn to fight and how to use your powers for good, he said. Join the Avengers Initiative he said, you’ll meet other people like you, he said. Well Fury, you could have warned me that I might one day have to face an alien army. Better yet you could have told me why Steve makes my powers go crazy and the real reason behind sending me to him. But Nooo! You couldn’t do that could you? That would be too damn easy.
I felt a small nudge and looked to Steve. “Hmm?”
“You alright? You kinda spaced out there for a moment.”
I shrugged. “Just thinking. Fury took me in, but it’s moments like these that make me want to smack him.”
“Fury took you in?”
“Well Clint found me wandering around in some small town in Germany. Fury decided that since I could only remember my name and I now had powers I was safer here.”
He nodded. “Right. So however you got your powers it caused you to lose your memory?”
“Yeah. For a time. I remember it all now,” I said softly.
He laid his hand on my arm. “When you’re ready I would like to hear it.”
I smiled warmly and kissed his cheek. “Maybe one day.” I stood and headed for my room. My lips tingling from where they touched his skin.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn part 7
Tumblr media
A/N: If you like this the masterlist for this series and my other works is in my bio
Summary: Steve and Lilah go on a hunt for information
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: none I can think of
Word count: 1134
I stood in the shower, my arms resting against the wall, water cascading down my back as I watched it swirl in the drain. The water was hot and my whole body was glowing softly. It made me think of how my hands glowed when I touched Steve or my arm when he rested his hand upon it. Why did he affect me in such a way? It was bugging me to no end.
What was worse, it wasn’t just his touch that affected me. It was those blue eyes of his as well. Every time I gazed into them I got lost. They drew me in and made me think of things I shouldn’t. I barely knew him. What I did know was from his file, the old tapes from before he went into the ice, and what little time I had spent with him. It was crazy and it made no sense for me to be drawn to him like I was. Yet, I couldn’t get him out of my mind.
I climbed out and dried off. I was in the middle of dressing when I heard a knock at my door. I pulled my shirt the rest of the way over my head and opened it. “Steve?”
He crossed his arms and stared at the ground for a hard moment. “How much clearance do you have?”
That certainly wasn’t the question I had been inspecting. “Pretty high. Why, what’s on your mind? What are you wanting to know?”
Steve walked into my room and closed the door. “You said that you didn’t think SHIELD should have pulled the cube out of the ocean. That it was too powerful and they had no idea what they were doing with it.”
“I did and that’s exactly what I think. What’s going on exactly?”
“Stark and Bruce brought up some good points. If Fury is really using the cube to make clean energy why didn’t he bring Tony in? I mean he is the leading name in the stuff right now.”
I frowned. “You’re...they’re...dammit. I know what you’re suggesting and I know you probably aren’t wrong. What do you need from me?” I grabbed my security badge and sighed.
He smiled. “You’ll help me?”
I nodded. “I’ll help.” God help me, but I couldn’t tell him no. The look in his beautiful blue eyes, the conviction in his voice, I had to help. It didn’t matter how pissed off Fury was going to get. I needed to do something.
Steve grabbed my hand and started leading me down the halls. It seemed he had figured out his way around rather quickly. When we reached the door he wanted to enter I opened it. Inside were crates marked ‘Phase 2’. I frowned and tried to open one, but someone was coming.
I jumped up to the higher ledge with Steve and watched the guard come through. I had clearance to be here, but if we were caught before we found out what we needed to then it was all for nothing.
We waited a bit and the guard passed. Steve climbed down and I went with his help. His hands rested on my hips and I could feel the heat radiating off of him. I could smell his cologne and he smelled wonderful. The perfect mixture of musk and spice. It made my nose tingle and for a split second I thought about laying my head on his chest and taking a deep breath, but then he was moving away. I pouted, but followed. It was probably for the best anyway.
Letting Steve know that I was harboring some kind of feelings for him just wasn’t a good idea. I knew it wasn’t. I had to let it go. There was no way a guy like him would ever go for me. I was too outspoken, loud, weird, and I had strange powers. I was a mess and not necessarily a hot one.
Steve easily pried open one of the crates and inside was weapons. He pulled one out and the pure unadulterated anger that seemed to come off him in waves was slightly intimidating. However it was also highly understandable.
It had been such a short time since he woke up. To him the war had only ended a few weeks ago. A war he had been told we’d won. Yet weapons created from the Tesseract were sitting right in front of him. It had been the very thing Red Skull had done. He had claimed it was to build a better future for humanity. What was SHIELD’s excuse? This certainly wasn’t an energy project they were working on.
The very people Steve thought he could trust were doing exactly what the enemy had done and they had lied about it. I wasn’t sure how many of us they lied to, but like him I was feeling very betrayed.
“I had no idea. I always thought they should have left something that powerful in the ocean, that we couldn’t ever comprehend it, but I never imagined this. I never thought they would do what Hydra did.”
He looked down at me. His blue eyes held a storm. There was anger, hurt, betrayal in them. I reached out and touched his arm. “I swear I didn’t know,” I said softly.
Steve’s jaw clenched. It was hard to miss it, but he nodded. “I believe you. I don’t think you lied to me, but Fury clearly lied to you.”
“He did and it hurts. I looked up to him, to Nat, to Hill. Learning that they lied to me like this...I have the clearance to find it. Why not just tell me?”
“Maybe that’s why they gave you clearance. What reason would you have to think they were lying, keeping you in the dark, when you had access? It was a ploy. And a cruel one at that. They shouldn’t have messed with you in such a way.”
I frowned and shook my head. As much as I wanted to yell, scream, and cry I wouldn’t. Not now. “Let’s go show Tony and Bruce.”
Tumblr media
“What is phase two?” Tony asked.
Steve slammed the gun down on the table, gaining everyone’s attention. “Phase two is SHIELD uses the cube to build weapons. Sorry the computer was moving a little slow for me.”
I glared at Fury, daring him to say that wasn’t the case. If he thought for one second he was going to talk his way out of this one he was wrong. I was going to get answers one way or another.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn part 4
Tumblr media
Summary: Lilah and the others capture Loki, but she isn’t sure about it
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: slight touch of violence, still unsure if it’s a slow burn or not (could someone help me figure this out)
Word Count: 1021
Natasha had been right. Surprisingly it hadn’t taken long to find Loki at all. It was as if he didn’t care that he was being noticed. The guy was drawing attention to himself. Almost like he was holding up a neon sign that said ‘HERE I AM!’ in bright flashing colors. It made me wonder just what the god of mischief was up to. No one else found it off when there was an 80 % match to his photo, but something told me that there was more that we didn’t know.
Once again my thoughts were ignored. Truthfully, I was getting tired of Fury not listening. One of these days it was going to come back to bite him in the ass and I was going to laugh when that happened. I was going to laugh so hard, point in his face, and say, ‘I told you so.’
Was that petty of me? Yes, it was. I knew it was and normally I wasn’t the type to be petty, but sometimes Fury got under my skin and I couldn’t help myself. It didn’t matter that he had took me in when I was sixteen, trained me to fight properly, and use weapons. He wasn’t my father and I was tired of him acting like he was all the time. Sure sometimes I understood and it didn’t bother me, but times like this...it pissed me off.
Yet I had suited up and climbed onto the quinjet like a good agent.
Pacing back and forth I tried to anticipate how this fight was going to go. Figure out what Loki was going to do it before he did it. I couldn’t read minds, but Loki’s type was rather easy to figure out; at least for the most part. I assumed he was going to make some kind of show, claim that he was here to help us much like he had done when he first arrived and took the Tesseract.
Steve laid a hand on my shoulder and gave a soft squeeze. “Hey it’s going to be okay. No need to be nervous.”
I laughed softly. “I’m not nervous. Pacing helps me think. I was trying to come up with what Loki is going to do and the best way to stop him.” I was glad we were both wearing our suits. Somehow it prevented his warmth from touching me. My powers stayed completely under control.
He smiled sheepishly. “Oh. I see. That makes sense. I thought you were nervous. Which if you were it would be understandable.”
“Would it now?”
He nodded. “Yeah, it would. He’s strong and fast, smart. He has the magic.” He shrugged like it was the most obvious thing.
“True, but I’m not nervous and I have a plan.” I smirked.
“What’s that?”
Tumblr media
Steve jumped in front of Loki, his shield blocking the shot Loki had aimed at an elderly gentleman and knocking it back. “Ya know the last time I was in Germany and saw a man standing over everyone else we didn’t get along either.”
“The soldier. The man out of time.” Loki climbed back to his feet.
“I’m not the one out of time.” He ran at him and they started trading blows.
I stood to the side, watching, waiting for an opening.
“Kneel,” Loki sneered as he held his scepter on top of Steve’s head.
I used my powers to pull his arm away while Steve jumped back up and kicked him. “Not today,” Steve said.
Hits were passed back and forth and I threw a few of my own. However when AC/DC started blaring from the quinjet I was completely caught off guard. I lowered my hands and looked up. Just in time too, apparently.
Tony shot at Loki, knocking him back and then landed. “Make your move reindeer games.” He aimed all his weapons at the downed Asgardian. His arrival completely derailed my plan, but it worked all the same.
Loki help his hands up in defeat. His armor melted away and he looked defeated.
“Smart move.” Tony glanced at Steve. “Captain.”
“Stark,” he replied.
“Shaw.”
Both men turned and looked at me. I giggled and shrugged. “What?! I wasn’t going to let you pretend I wasn’t here so I said my own name.”
“You’re something else Lilah. You always have been.” Tony chuckled.
I hummed softly and glanced at Loki as they loaded him onto the quinjet. Something just didn’t feel right about all of this. Maybe I was being paranoid because he had taken Clint and because I had no idea why my powers kept messing up with Steve. But it seemed to me that we took him in a lot easier than we should have.
I began pacing back and forth once more. This time trying to figure out why we had taken Loki with such little effort. There had been a fight, but it wasn’t the kind of fight I expected from him. I had seen the damage his scepter could do. Had barely managed to get out of the base without being harmed thanks to him blowing things up. He had turned Clint into his puppy and we take him down this easy? No something was seriously wrong with that.
Tony grabbed me and pushed me into a seat. “I know you do the pacing thing to think, but you’re driving me crazy. Just sit there and bounce your leg or something. Sound good?”
I blinked in surprise. I wasn’t used to being manhandled like that. Not that I was upset really. My pacing had been known to drive people crazy before. I nodded and started bouncing my leg instead as I went over every detail of the fight. Hell, I even went over the details that led us to find Loki, what he had said and done back at the base. All of it led me to believe that he was up to something.

Every Rose Has Its Thorn Part 10
Tumblr media

Summary: Lilah finally gets the truth out of Fury. Is it enough to crush her after everything else or does it make her stronger?
Pairing: Steve x OC
Warnings: mentions of violence, torture, and death. Slow burn, language
Word Count: 1532
“Agent Coulson is down,” Fury said. Those were the words that pulled me from my musings. Phil was down. I tensed up.
“Medic team is on the way to your station,” one of the other agents replied.
I took off running as fast as I possibly could. Medic couldn’t help him as well as I could. I had to get to him. As angry as I was about the secrets I still loved Phil like a brother. He was part of my family and if I could heal him, even a little, then medic would be able to do the rest.
I came to a crashing halt and almost fell at the next words that came over the coms.
“They’re already here. They called it.”
I grabbed the wall and slid down. Phil was dead, Loki most likely gone, the Hellicarrier damaged, and the Hulk missing. It seemed within a few short minutes everything had went to shit. Tears poured down my face as I silently cried into my knees. I didn’t know what else to do.
I wasn’t sure how long I sat there crying, but when strong warm arms picked me up I wiped my tears away. When my vision cleared I noticed Steve had me in his arms. He carried me to the bridge and sat me down at the large table. I didn’t even realize most of me was glowing as I looked to Fury who was standing in front of the table. My only clue was the strange look Tony was giving us before I was placed in a seat and it stopped.
“These were in Phil Coulson’s jacket.” Fury looked down at some cards in his hand. The were trading cards. Captain America trading cards, vintage, and Phil had been so proud of them. “Guess he never did get you to sign them.” Fury threw them on to the table.
I could see the blood splattered on them and had to choke back another sob. He really was gone. My friend was gone because of Loki and I didn’t know how to handle that. We had fallen right into his trap and now I wasn’t sure if we could get out of it. Some of the team was gone, Tony and Steve couldn’t get along for more than two seconds, and I felt crushed from everything that had happened.
Steve reached for one of the cards and I watched him. The way he was tensed, the set of his jaw, the look in his eyes; he was pissed and upset as well. So many lives lost because of one person.
“We’re dead in the air, our communications, the location of the cube, Banner, Thor...I got nothing for you. Lost my one good eye.”
I finally lifted my gaze to Fury. I wanted to yell at him; tell him this was his fault. Phil was dead because they messed with something they never should have. They had broken my trust because they knew I wouldn’t agree with what they were doing, but Phil’s face swam before my eyes and I couldn’t bring myself to do it. He wouldn’t want me yelling at Fury, he wouldn’t want me crying like a baby either. That didn’t stop my tears however, but it did stop my burst of outrage.
“Maybe I had that coming,” Fury said softly. “Yes, we were going to build an arsenal with the Tesseract. I never put all my chips on that number though because I was playing something even riskier.”
I raised a brow. So he was finally telling the truth. At least some of it. It was about time.
“There was an idea, Stark and Shaw know this, called the Avengers Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of remarkable people, see if they could become something more. See if they could work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that we never could.” Fury looked to Tony, who had yet to look at him once during all of this. “Phil Coulson died still believing in that idea...in heroes.”
Tony stood suddenly and without a word to anyone stormed off. I watched him go, wondering what was going through his head. Probably thoughts similar to mine. He didn’t like all the secrets and lies either.
“Well it’s an old fashioned notion.” Fury looked down at his feet.
I watched him, weighed my options, and once Steve went after Tony, I decided to confront Fury. I pushed my seat back and stood. “Old fashioned or not you were banking on us. Yet you kept me in the dark about the cube, about who knows what else. I want to know what and I want to know why.”
Fury turned to me. “You mean why didn’t I tell you we were building weapons when I gave you clearance? Why did I send you to recruit Rogers? And why do you glow when you touch him? Is that what you’re asking me?”
“Yes, dammit! That’s exactly what I want to know. I trusted you, I trusted her,” I pointed to Maria not that far away, “I trusted Clint and Nat, and...and I trusted Phil. But all of you were keeping secrets and I want to know why.”
“I knew you wouldn’t approve of us building weapons with the cube. From the moment we found it and Rogers, you’ve been adamant that we should have left it in the ocean. You believed it would cause problems. I also know how curious you are. The best way to make sure you don’t ask questions is to give you access to something. You wouldn’t have any reason to go asking questions then because you could look for yourself whenever you wanted.”
I frowned. He wasn’t wrong. I hated that cube and for good reason. It had been the cause of so much destruction. Steve had crashed into the ocean, freezing himself for seventy years for a reason.
“As you can see I was right. That fucking cube is the reason that Phil is dead and we’ve ended up in this whole mess,” I snapped.
He nodded. “I’m not saying you’re wrong, but there’s your answer.”
“And the whole thing with me and Steve?”
“That’s a bit more complicated. You might want to sit.” He pointed to the chair I had previously been sitting in.
I sat back down and looked up at him. “So answer me.”
“As you know the people that took you were giving you super soldier serum. Or a version of it. The real serum was lost years ago. The version they were giving you was one they tried to replicate using Steve Rogers blood. They must have gathered it when he got cut on one of his missions. I’m not really sure. But the truth is some of his DNA went into the serum that created you. The injection, the gamma radiation, along with the vat of chemicals you fell in after getting free is what gave you your powers.”
I was shocked. Steve and I had a connection because his DNA was used to create me. Unless we worked to control it, anytime I touched him I would glow. This wasn’t what I had expected and it was certainly a lot to take in. My mind was reeling, it was bouncing all over the place as were my emotions. I couldn’t seem to settle on just one.
“Holy fuck,” I whispered, not knowing what else to say or even think.
Fury laughed softly. “That is certainly one way to react. Do you have anymore questions?”
“Just one. Is my connection to Steve the reason I,” I cleared my throat and looked away a little embarrassed, “want to be near him and seem to get lost every time he talks to me?”
“No, that is because you genuinely like him. Even have a crush I would say. But don’t feel bad Shaw, he looks at you the same way when you aren’t looking.”
My head snapped up. “What?! Are you serious? No, you can’t be. He’s...and I’m...he’d never like me that way.”
“Ya never know unless you ask. Now get going.” He waved me away.
I went to say something, but noticed Tony taking off as fast as his beat up suit would let him. My eyes widened and as quickly as I could, I rushed to the hanger just in time to see Clint, Natasha, and Steve getting into a quinjet.
“Wait! I’m coming!”
Steve pulled me into the jet just as the door closed. We were incredibly close and I was glowing once more. “Glad you could make it Lilah,” he said barely above a whisper.
“Wouldn’t miss it.” I gazed into his startling blue eyes, heart pounding in my chest, butterflies swirling in my stomach and was about to press my lips to his.
“Good to see you again kid. I’ve missed you,” Clint said.
I quickly moved away and found my seat. “Good to see you again too.”
Steve had a look on his face as he found his own seat. Was it disappointment? Had he wanted to kiss me as well?
