When Jayne Mansfield Met Alice the Brady Bunch’s Housekeeper! Let me put this forgotten fringe-of-show biz encounter in context. From Jayne Mansfield: The Girl Couldn’t Help It (2021) by Eve Golden:
“In May 1964 Jayne signed (at $4,000 a week) to bring two of Marilyn Monroe’s movie roles to the stage: the pathetic nightclub singer Cherie in Bus Stop (first played onstage by Kim Stanley in 1955) and wide-eyed gold digger Lorelei Lee in the 1949 musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (originated on Broadway by Carol Channing). Bus Stop, written by William Inge, required heavy-duty acting and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes required heavy-duty singing (“A Little Girl from Little Rock” and the anthem “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” among other songs – most of which were cut from the 1953 movie version). Jayne needed a good director; her acting ranged from brilliant to amateurish depending on the script and director she was handed. Bus Stop and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes had good scripts, so she set about interviewing potential directors. Finding a seasoned professional who was willing to do summer stock might not be easy. Jayne was lucky, finding twenty-eight-year-old New Yorker Matt Cimber in her first round of interviews.”
At the time, Mansfield was still married to Mickey Hargitay. Cimber would soon become Mansfield’s third and final husband. Her leading man (playing the part of Bo Decker) was Stephen Brooks. Hargitay was cast in a smaller role as the bus driver. Also in the cast: Ann B Davis (aka Alice the housekeeper from TV sitcom The Brady Bunch). “Jayne was not as advertised,” Davis would rage years later. “She was huge drunk. Bipolar. Unprofessional. And any claims that she was a genius - ha! She was about as bright as a chalkboard. Dumb as sin! She was not educated by any definition. She was a blowzy alcoholic. She could barely read lines and was awful to the rest of the cast and crew.” In case anyone missed the point, Davis continued, “She was vulgar, obscene and pathetic … that girl was a dark monster!” While touring Bus Stop, Mansfield told a reporter, “Right now we’re trying to arrange a 15-week tour with Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” The mind reels imagining Mansfield interpreting Tennessee Williams’ “Maggie the Cat”!

Fantasy Month :Alice in Wonderland
Tumblr media
FOr the first film in fantasy month I shall look at Irwin Allens TV miniseries adaptation of Lewis Carrolls classic Alice stories
In this 1985 film Alice (Natalie Gregory) becomes lost in the realm of wonderland ,meeting odd characters she is eager to return home and prove herself not just a child ....And must also face her fears in the form of the Jabberwocky (Tom McLoughlin )
So this is one of many many many many adaptations of Alice in Wonderland.I have been aware of this version for a long time :Saw the VHS at blockbuster back when I was akid ,considered purchasing the DVD once and of course I know its a favorite for many Wonderland fans .Now with films like this ,that I didnt see as a kid ,I sometimes I deel a bit melancholly that it has taken me long to see it....I dont feel that this time. Now I did very much enjoy this ,this was a very fun time for me.....But I dont think it would of resonated with kid me,and being more mature ,familiar with the Alice story ,familiar with the entertainers within this and able to apppreciate certain moments ,I like it and feel no regret .That is to say,I also have problems, but I mostly really liked this
So what is this ?Where does this fall in the pantheon of Alice films .Well 4 things make it stand out
1.It adapts both Alices Adventures in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass ,first half is WOnderland ,second half Looking Glass . Most versions either just do Wonderland or mix in both stories together .As an adaptation I can only speak for the first half ,for I have only read Wonderland ....And its not adapted great ,some things they go too true to text despite their being obvious changes and certain scenes due to these changes become pointless(THe Caterpiller scenes purpose had been deleted so I dont know why it wasnt cut ).However the story does capture the madness I associate with Alice
2.The film adds a thread. Now the Alice stories are nonsense tales .just random encounters with weird characters ,not really a plot to speak of .THis movie add one about Alice growing up and her desire to go home ,first half really tackeling the growing up thing and the second is her facing her fears .I do like the idea of this arc for Alice ,even if I dont feelWonderland is the best story for this . The film also adds a villain in the form of the Jabberwocky from Lewis Carrols poem, who is the personification of Alices fears.I actually like this change ,I'm a big fan of the monster from the mind idea ,in fact the use of the Jabberwocky here reminds me of the Rhino from James and the Giant Peach (A childhood favorite of mine ) and I think the Jabberwocky is legit scary for kids ,the scene where he is introduced was legit spooky. What holds him back is he just represents fear and nothing concrete
3.THE ALL STAR CAST .Yeah its not the only version to get big actors but holy cow so many big stars are in this ,I cant comment on every single one .I'll start with the negative, cause while most of the cast is good some feel like they are collecting a paycheck : I dont know why Shelley Winters and Donald O'Connor and Shelley Winters are even there as the Lowrey Bird and Dodo ,they feel wasted. I was mixed on Sid Cesaras the Gryphon while always good honestly just feels like Sid Cesar in a Gryphon outfit .My least favorite was Sammy Davis Jr as the Caterpillar, dont get me wrong ,Davis Jr was a great performer ,but he is reallly stiff and miscast here .There are also cast members who I think are good ,but not my favorite versions of these characters like Red Buttons as the White Rabbit and Anthony Newley as Mad Hatter .Then you have some that I think are great even perfect like :
Telly Savalas who is wonderfully mysterious as the Cheshire Cat
Roddy McDowall as the March Hare, who steals the Mad Tea party scene
Jayne Meadows anbd Robert Morely are pitch perfect as the Queen and King of hearts
Ringo Starr is a ton of fun as the Mock Turtle
FRom what I understand Carol Channings performance as the White Queen has people kind of split but I adored her ,she is so fun to watch
Harvey Korman as the White King is fun cause.....Look I just like Harvey Korman
Merv Griffin,PAtrick Duffy,Steve Allen (Who also wrote the songs ) and Pat Morita are BRILLAINT as the conductor and passengers on the train, which maybe my favorite non musical scene
Karl Malden REALLY impressed me as the Walrus ,especially his singing ability
Eydie Gorme and Steve Lawrence were a unique take on Tweedledee and Tweedledum
And Lloyd Bridges is so darn lovable as theWhite Knight, and was happy he got to play a role in the finale ,fighting the Jabberwocky
I didnt even mention Sherman Hemsley ,Johnathan Winters,Beau Bridges and Ernest Borgnine!!!!
4.The songs ! This is a musical with songs by Steve Allen .....And for the most part the songs work.Yes some are filler and not alll of them work, but there were more that did work then didnt .I think the songs in the first half are more memorable. The two songs that stood out to me are the Walrus and the Carpenters song (Who knew Karl Malden had a musical flare to him)and really my favorite scene is Cheshire Cats song Theres No Way Home ,which mysterious and kind of sad but beautifully sung by Telly Savalas. Its the scene that stuck with me
Outside these main elements there are a few other things I wanna discuss. The prooduction design and costumes are very theatrical, this feels like a play, they are intenionally not realistic .The costumes remind me a lot of Fairy Tale Theater ,though the makeup is more stage makeup ,less cinematic here.I think I like the costumes,I've seen better but .....I've seen the 1933 version which this is much better then.I will say despite this being very light version.....There is a somewhat unsettling quality to it which I feel has to be part of Wonderland.WE have the obvious scary part ,the Jabberwocky, who is a big dragon monster ,but theres just the way characters react to Alice :The Cheshire Cat is very sinister ,the Mad Tea Party feel truly mad ,and some character are just very rude and mean .Theres also just odd creepy moments......CAroll Chyanning turns into a sheep out of nowhere and the Pig baby scene just has me very uncomfortable
This film does have a great grounding element:Natalie Gregory as possibly the best Alice I have seen. Alice here is very relatable ,when your a kid you wanna be taken seriously ,so I really connet to her. When she is scared your scared ,when she is happy you are ,and she almost outshines her older co stars .She is the ancor that makes the film work
Sooooo this review went on for a while.I just had a lot to say about the film.I think it is flawed but it is very enjoyable

Tumblr media
The Brown Derby ~ “Lucy and Johnny Carson” (1969)
After playing Stump the Band on “The Tonight Show” Lucy wins a dinner for two at the Brown Derby. There she runs into Johnny and Ed McMahon.  In an homage to the classic “I Love Lucy” episode also set at the Brown Derby, Lucy manages to cause a tray of drinks to be spilled on Carson.

To teach Harry a lesson, Lucy takes Harry to lunch and has Kim wait on him. She is making 40 cents an hour. Lucy orders a hamburger and iced tea. Harry’s usual is a salad - which Kim spills all over him - deliberately. She then dumps an ice cold glass of iced tea in his lap!
Tumblr media
Chasen’s ~ “Lucy and Eva Gabor are Hospital Roomies” (1972)
In the hospital Gabor’s assistant Walter (R.G. Brown) brings Gabor's dinner on a silver tray. He says it was prepared especially for her by Chasen's, a real-life West Hollywood restaurant frequented by entertainers. It first opened in 1936 and closed for good on April 1, 1995. Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were regulars and had their own private booth there. Although it is mentioned, no scenes are set there.
Tumblr media
Schwab’s Drug Store ~ “The Case of the Reckless Wheelchair Driver” (1972)
Kim says she saw Billy Joe Jackson (Jim Bates) at Schwab's. Schwab’s Pharmacy was a drug store located on Sunset Boulevard and was a popular hangout for wannabe movie actors from the 1930s through the 1950s. Schwab’s also had a soda fountain serving ice cream and light meals. It is Hollywood legend that actress Lana Turner was discovered at Schwab’s. Schwab’s closed its doors in October 1983 and five years later was demolished. Schwab’s was mentioned on “I Love Lucy” in “Lucy Wants to Get Into Pictures” (1955).
Tumblr media

Tumblr media
Persian Restaurant ~ “Lucy and Her Prince Charming” (1972)
Lucy is dating a handsome man (Ricardo Montalban) who turns out to be royalty. When Harry finds out that the Prince is in love with Lucy, he'll stop at nothing to get the two married - including masquerading as a fortune teller during their date at a Persian-themed restaurant.
Tumblr media

When Harry finds out his cousin Ben (Don Knotts) is rich and single, he wants Lucy to go on a blind date with him.
BEN (to Lucy, about the menu): “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but this is all in a foreign language.”  LUCY: “It’s Italian. You kinda have to expect that in a restaurant called the Villa Roma.”

Tumblr media
The Proud Penguin ~ “Lucy and the Franchise Fiasco” (1973)

Lucy and Mary Jane are partners in the business, The episodes also features scenes set in the Bradshawe Building Coffee Shop and on the dining terrace of the Westland Country Club, where a dinner of a whole albacore tuna is destroyed by baby penguins!
Tumblr media

Lucy and Harry recieve tickets to a football game between the USC 'Trojans’ and the University of Oklahoma 'Sooners’. Two visiting team fans (Cliff Norton and Al Checco) pass by singing the title song of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Although the Coliseum is a real place, the gate area was recreated on a Paramount soundstage.
Tumblr media
Restaurant ~ “Lucy and Andy Griffith” (1973)
Lucy has coffee with Andy Johnson (Andy Griffith) to talk about his work with underprivileged youth. In the next scene, Kim and Harry meet at the same restaurant and sit in the same booth!  The red booths used in the episode were also seen in the Bradshawe Building Coffee Shop.

Tumblr media
Harvey’s Welcome Inn ~ “Lucy Fights the System” (1974)
To prove that a waitress Mary was let go because of her age, Kim goes undercover as a new hire. She deliberately turns the restaurant upside down to prove how capable Mary was. This is the last episode of the series. Fittingly, Harry gets a pie in the face.

The Kenley Players was an Equity summer stock theatre company which presented hundreds of productions featuring Broadway, film, and television stars in Midwestern cities between 1940 and 1996. Variety called it the "largest network of theaters on the straw hat circuit." Founded by and operated for its entire lifespan by John Kenley, it is credited with laying the groundwork for Broadway touring companies.
The company's success was predicated on booking big-name stars for their box office potential, casting them in familiar plays and musicals, and keeping prices low, thereby attracting large crowds. In its heyday, Kenley Players productions drew crowds of 5,000 in Dayton, Akron, Columbus, Flint, Michigan, and Warren, Ohio. Kenley "pioneered the notion of putting TV stars in summer stock." In a 1950 interview Kenley told The Washington Post, "I only charge $1.50 top...I'd rather have full houses every night than be stuck with a batch of empty seats."
Headliners included Tallulah Bankhead, Cyd Charisse, Rosemary Clooney, Olivia de Havilland, Veronica Lake, Gypsy Rose Lee, Arthur Godfrey, Rudy Vallée, Tommy Tune, Burt Reynolds, Ethel Merman, Mae West, Billy Crystal, William Shatner, Betty White, Florence Henderson, Mickey Rooney, Roddy McDowall, Marlene Dietrich, Jayne Mansfield, Rock Hudson and Gloria Swanson.
Those who appeared in more than five productions included Edie Adams, Ed Ames, Vivian Blaine, Mitzi Gaynor, Vincent Price, Genevieve, Robert Goulet, Lois Hunt, Van Johnson, Carol Lawrence, Paul Lynde, Gordon MacRae, Ann Miller, Karen Morrow, John Raitt, Martha Raye, Alexis Smith, Betty White, Barry Williams, and Earl Wrightson. In 1972, 1973, and 1975, Karen Valentine appeared in Columbus, Ohio. In 1978, Sue Ane Langdon appeared in Chicago in Columbus, Ohio.
Backstage called the Kenley Players "a legendary summer stock circuit." Playbill called it "for decades, a renowned midwestern summer stock outfit." During the period The Phil Donahue Show was broadcast from Dayton, celebrities appearing in Kenley productions appeared regularly, giving Kenley national publicity

#FlashbackFriday featuring Wreathing Havoc (A Garden Squad Mystery) by Julia Henry #Review / #Giveaway @KensingtonBooks @JHauthors

On Flashback Fridays I will share with you the books I was not able to review when they were first released that have been screaming at me from my To-Be-Read bookshelf.

Wreathing Havoc (A Garden Squad Mystery) Cozy Mystery 4th in Series Setting - Massachusetts Kensington (September 28, 2021) Paperback ‏ : ‎ 352 pages ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1496733096 ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1496733092 Kindle ASIN ‏ : ‎ B08RWZNGC1

There’s nothing like autumn in picturesque Goosebush, Massachusetts, but beneath the season’s sun-dappled foliage, Lilly Jayne and her Garden Squad must investigate a shadowy murder mystery after a theater owner’s sudden death sows as much drama behind the scenes as on any stage . . . Lilly Jayne typically spends the harvest season baking festive pies and crafting colorful wreaths to enter in the library’s annual fundraising contest. But this year, autumn opens on a somber note when beloved local theater owner, Leon Tompkin, dies unexpectedly. His memorial sets the scene for a mini reunion of The Goosebush Players’ best and brightest alumni, including Hollywood star, Jeremy Nolan . . . until someone plucks Jeremy from the spotlight, permanently. Now, as dedicated theater volunteer, Scooter McGee, falls under suspicion, Lilly and her Garden Squad must spring into action. They quickly discover a cornucopia of potential suspects in Jeremy’s murder. Was it an embittered ex . . . or a jilted lover? A rival thespian . . . or an overly ambitious artist? Lilly rakes through the piles of clues, but if she doesn’t uncover the real killer soon, more than autumn leaves will be dropping in Goosebush . . . Dollycas's Thoughts Local theater owner and dear friend of Lilly Jayne, Leon Tompkin, has passed away. He had been sick but his passing was quicker than imagined. A memorial at the theater brings together the alumni of The Goosebush Players, including Jeremy Nolan and Annabelle Keys who both went on to become Hollywood stars. The theater had been planning several readings of A Christmas Carol and has decided to still do so only with Nolan and Keys taking part. But there will be no encore performance for Jeremy Nolan. He is killed at a reception following the event. Theater volunteer Scooter McGee becomes the police's prime suspect but Lilly Jayne knows he didn't do it. She gathers together The Garden Squad and they start to dig through the suspects and the clues. Will they be able to plant the killer behind bars? or will one of them be picked (off) by the killer when they get too close? All my favorite characters are back busy solving mysteries and planning their Thanksgiving feasts. Lily Jayne is an amazing woman with a huge heart and pride in all things Goosebush that is unmatched although some come close. A new character joins the group. Minh Vann, the new librarian has the skills the Historical Society needs and she loves the research and making the information accessible. She is very enthusiastic and talkative but Delia is happy to have her on board and Roddy enjoys working with her. She is on a quest of her own that brings a new element to the series. I really enjoy how realistic all of Ms. Henry's characters are and how they continue to grow and evolve. There are a lot of things happening within these pages and Lilly Jayne seems to be involved in everything. Baking pies for the holidays, a wreath contest at the library, a garden sculpture contest at the park, some things in her gardens and greenhouse, and several coincidences that are uncovered while trying to solve the mysteries of the theater. The author blends it all together with such detail. Well-plotted and written the story flows perfectly making it very hard to put down. I had to force myself to do that when I looked up and saw it was 1 in the morning, then quickly picked it up after work the next day to finish. The mystery takes several twists with a variety of suspects with probable motives. With Chief Sebastian "Bash" Haywood removed from the high-profile case he was able to work with Lilly Jayne and the squad. The future of the theater due to Leon's death takes the story in an interesting direction and brings to light other deaths connected to the place. All the members of The Garden Squad have their strengths so solving the case was a real group effort but one clue really sets Lilly Jayne on the trail of the truth. I was totally captivated by each twist and turn so much so I had an inkling of what was going to happen but was still surprised as everything was spelled out and all was revealed. The only thing I missed was that because of the time of year, there were no secret midnight garden emergencies rectified by The Garden Squad but they truly did have their hands full with other important things. Wreathing Havoc is a wonderful addition to the Garden Squad Mystery series. This series really focuses on friendships that get stronger with each book and each case solved. The core characters are so appealing making it very easy to get involved in their lives. A complex mystery that tests me is another thing that draws me in and the one in this book certainly did that. Another Perfect Escape from Julia Henry. I highly recommend this book and series to all cozy readers, especially those with a green thumb.

Riding Through It: A Memoir Carol McKibben https://www.amazon.com/Riding-Through-Memoir-Carol-McKibben-ebook/dp/B00E2C0OR6
To Live in the Present, Let Go of the Past! Stop Being a Victim! Take Control of Your Life! Carol finds herself drawn to controlling, selfish men. She marries her college sweetheart, and her world spirals downward from there. Carol McKibben paints a picture of a women who has always allowed herself to be a victim, blaming others for her circumstances until one near-fatal night gives her the strength to take control of her own life. She shares this story in the hope that other women will see how they too can change their lives for the better. Filled with vivid portrayals of friends and family members, including a villain of a husband who you will be rooting against, Riding Through It is a candid story of redemption and finding the courage to change your destiny. ˃˃˃ A Must Read! "A must read for all women….truly inspirational and a wonderful book. I'm letting all my friends borrow it." -Franny Jaynes ˃˃˃ Honoring Life's Journey. . . "Riding Through It" is a page-turner. I stayed up all night to finish it. It's one of those real life stories, with real life characters, that every woman in today's society can relate. Carol reveals the courage and commitment each of us faces as we step out of our cultural conditioning into our true selves. Buy the book, apply it to your own story, discover you are your own hero, and celebrate as your life unfolds!" - D.A. MacMillan ˃˃˃ A Truly Inspirational Story! "The family reminded me a little bit of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood story because the mother-daughter relationship makes you laugh and cry at the same time. I highly recommend this book!" -Rita Dubnewych
