Actually while I'm still a bird blog (literally just for today) here's some other birds I'm fond of/think would be GREAT in Skyjacks:

Willie Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys)

Tiny, adjustable eyebrows, fan tail, fantastically acrobatic fliers. Two kinds of noises: angry shouting and beautiful singing. Diet is primarily insects but they have been known to eat carrion of far larger animals. Not afraid of humans. Made mostly of audacity: will often attack much larger birds including magpies, ravens and occasionally even osprey (sea eagles) or wedge-tailed eagles.

Currawong (Strepera sp.)

Three species of absolute clown disguised as dapper goths. Very clever and capable of bastardry: wild populations have been documented unzipping bags to get at the contents. All round omnivore. Social. Soup dragon noises.

Rainbow bee-eater (Merops ornatus)

Rainbow, eats bees (and other insects, but especially bees). Migratory, can fly far distances for a little bird. Makes and then nests in underground burrows. Very social. Makes delightful prrt noises and exhibits some very cute huddling behaviour.

Red-tailed black cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii)

Large, loud and social. Shy with humans but not absent from urban and suburban areas. Dangerous if you happen to be a delicious seed pod, or item that looks fun to chew on. Capable of high flying, rarely comes down to the ground (mostly hangs out in trees). A herald of coming rains, according to old farmer's tales. Brains. Incredible aesthetic really.

Splendid fairywren (Malurus splendens)

This tiny man is in fact more blue in person, (juvenile and female individuals being brown with a splash of blue on the tail). He flirts by offering flower petals and fancy flying. He's also a good dad. Always moving, fast takeoff and strong flight (but only in short bursts). Like all adorable round birds, very territorial.

New Holland honeyeater (Phylidonyris novaehollandiae)

Small, social bird with dignified sideburns who subsists primarily off of sugar (with a side of insects and arachnids). Mobile, talkative, and known to gang up on larger birds, such as wattlebirds (below). Nimble fliers, but tend to navigate a flowering bush from the inside. Looks like an electric type pokémon.

Superb fruit dove (Ptilinopus superbus)

Medium-small pigeon with an absolutely unrealistic colour palette (yet impressively camouflaged). Indeed superb. Also a dove that eats fruit. Not great at building nests. Migratory or nomadic but sneaky about it: possibly at night, as they (unfortunately) occasionally collide with lighthouses.

Pacific baza (Aviceda subcristata)

Looks as though a wizard has turned a cuckoo into a bird of prey in a futile attempt to teach it the meaning of hard work. In fact a medium sized, crested hawk. An omnivore: hunts everything from insects to reptiles to smaller birds, but also actively eats fruit. Rumoured to be able to mimic frog-calls, which coaxes the frogs to respond in turn. Pretty chill and, like many other hawks, social. Documented aerial somersaulter. Also not the greatest at nest building.

Red wattlebird (Anthochaera carunculata)

Not the prettiest, but interesting to watch. Large honeyeater and one of the few birds I am convinced has retained awareness of being a dinosaur. Loud about it, either with a gutteral cluck or lovely singing. Glides as much as flies, though they are perfectly capable of it. A decent climber, nimble. Will throw it's weight around with both smaller and larger birds. Unclear if it entirely understands it's place in the food chain.

Southern boobook (Ninox boobook)

A small, compact, cute and otherwise plain owl, but with very striking eyeliner. Does well in suburban areas. Named for the distinct noise it makes, though is (as most owls are) a totally silent flier. Feeds mostly on insects and small mammals but is also capable of catching bats.

Creature design for Spectember. The clown as a natural animal. The clown is a territorial omnivore that lives in troops. Like other colorful primates such as the blue egg monkey and mandrill, the clown uses a series of colorful displays as a marker of overall health and fertility. The thick red ruff around the neck also adds protection in the brutal fights that break out between mature males.

While clowns can hunt, they prefer carrion, fruit and nuts as well as the tender roots of certain grasses.

the original one was made. Before i knew much about the other guys so it was a visual vibe check. however good point of reference. some of these are objectively correct.

i think there's like One that was missing from the list that i found the perfect bird for after, so Minute: Sporophila murallae (a subspecies of S. americana)

AND for the thing i didn't do there: explanations

i think minute fits with a relatively small seed eating bird, mostly because that is just how i think of him.

now to pull some of the birds from the list that i am soooo certain about because they just. FIT. to me.

Clown: Gypaetus barbatus (bearded vulture) / alt: Hamirostra melanosternon (black-breasted buzzard)

these birds are naturally black and white but their feathers get stained this red color; generally you'll probably notice i chose two different carrion eating birds for clown. again, gut feeling, he has this vibe to him that he eats dead things. and he's regal about it.

Zam: Terpsiphone paradisi (indian paradise flycatcher)

SO zam gets this one because i mean. weird flashy bird. honestly a LOT of these are visual because i don't see a lot of birds here. lookit that thang. zam to me.

a different choice from the original alt of the rook, i think that these little birds are a good choice, they're elusive in the places they reside, but i heard them a lot, and you'd almost think you're looking at a robin at first if you only see them from a distance. perfectly disguised, yeah?

Mapicc: Opisthocomus hoazin (hoatzin) / alt: Lanius schach longicaudatus (eastern subspecies - long-tailed shrike)

okay, okay, hear me out on this one. something about the fact they look almost exactly how a lot of people depict phoenixes just fit so perfectly. if i could assign mapicc a fictional bird, i would 100% assign him a phoenix. he is a phoenix to me.

a small update from the original choice, favoring a subspecies with a more striking color palette (a fully black cap, rather than the mask which is typical). do i have to explain him being a shrike to me. he's a shrike. mapicc just doesn't seem like a large bird to me.

(i MIGHT have more notes lying around but right now these are the major ones i have thoughts / changes about; beside branzy being made a predatory bird rather than a songbird, which was something that i did completely intentionally because i feel like it's a great but kind of subtle subversion of expectation. i have yet to find good birds that i really think fit roshambo, if you're wondering why he isn't here PVNJKDLF )

Triumph: they/she, the Ringmaster for the Carrion Canyon Carnival. Has her egg cracking moment after founding the Carnival and realizing she can present herself however she wants. Also aromantic :)

Radio and Star: she/her seperately or they/them collectively. Both are masters at coding and technology and composing electronic music. Loves hanging out at the Carnival and annoying Solstice (not featured here) with their own custom music tracks.

Starstruck: she/it, the Carnival's resident girlthing!! Also makes the costumes for everyone :]

Pompoh: she/he. A dancer/acrobat for the Carnival. Raised sheltered and is only just figuring out this queer identity stuff.

Jester: she/her, one of the Carnival's famous clowns!! Her gender is clown. You're not getting any more explanation than that.

Buggy: they/she. One of my STP dragons and thus not a lore dragon, but I imagine they're in a loving t4t relationship with their partner, Angel (not shown here)

okok this is a really cool idea! Honestly personally I think that the hair colours would be the same as the shark's natural colouring. BUT that got me thinking... what shark would I assign to some silly wigs?

Bearded wig : Greenland shark

(this is one of my favourite sharks :3 )

The Greenland shark is a type of deep ocean "sleeper" shark known to inhabit cold, northern oceans. It feeds on mostly fish, but has been known to eat a range of other creatures- such as sharks or seals. This is a BIG fish, the largest known being 6.4 meters long, and conserves energy by moving slowly- so slowly, in fact, that a Greenland shark's pregnancy period is estimated to be AT LEAST 8 years!!

I could write more about this shark, but I'm going to keep it short. The reason why I would give it a grey beard and wig combination is because.. it is the oldest living vertebrate in the world!!! Greenland sharks are estimated to live up to 400 years, and so I thought that such old creatures deserve grey beards to match !!

Clown wig : Blue shark

Blue sharks are oceanic, migratory sharks known for their blue colouration. They travel long distances, primarily feeding on squid but also eating a range of other food (other invertebrates, fish, and sometimes carrion). They can also birth many pups in a litter- around 100 at a time!

I think they deserve the clown wig because they look very silly. I know that you're expecting some "logic" from me but no, i just like the way they look :3 silly sharks,,,

Mohawk : Hammerhead shark

Hammerhead sharks are known for.. well, for their head! There are 9 species of hammerhead, having a range of diets- the smallest species (the bonnethead) even eating seagrass!! Although I decided to use the great hammerhead because these guys are IMPRESSIVE!! Hammerhead's unique shape gives them enhanced senses such as vision and smell, as well as a wider area for the ampullae of Lorenzini to detect electrical impulses (yes, all sharks can sense electricity from their noses!).

I think they deserve a mohawk due to their striking and unique shape. Hammerhead sharks deserve more appreciation for their appearance, especially because it creates more drag in the water for them to swim against!!

ANYWAYS, I could already see Carrion and Kenneth actually being decent towards each other. They always seem to cross paths and seeing how Carrion has no judgment, they find a lot to talk about. Kenneth rambles while both of them eat, Carrion just listens.

Now, Phyllis is going to see this abomination and just go " :) Our Child Now" It will not help that Carrion willingly goes to interact with them, eats whatever they give them and just chills.

Kea (nestor notabilis)

The Kea is a fascinating species of parrot found in the South Island of New Zealand. They have an omnivorous diet, which consists mostly of roots, berries, leaves, nectar, and insects, but also includes carrion, which is unusual for parrot species. They are highly intelligent and curious, sometimes called 'the clown of the mountains' for its high curiosity, investigating people's items and damaging them or even flying away with them.

Prompt #8 - Shed

Driven by curiosity and tired of Sheol's nagging, Glace eventually went in search of the two Caern described by the chimera. He was guided not by exact maps or coordinates but by fleeting glimpses in some of the fever dreams bestowed upon him, and these led info the depths of the flagship in Azys Lla. He hated this place. He hated the memories which weren't his own and he hated what happened to some of his siblings here thanks to Garlemald. There was nothing good to find here, but if nothing else, there were still things which could be useful such as the myriad chimerae that still slept in their suspension chambers even after many others had broken out a long time ago. It was no surprise that the place smelled foul. It reeked of old death and ozone from perpetually running machines, and the corpses of both creatures and invaders who had made the mistake of breaking in in search of treasure. Though few and far between, there were still man-made monsters alive in here and they were hungry due to infrequent meals. Aside from spare fragments of imagery, Glace had no idea where to even begin. He came across recent leavings now and then but he wasn't about to invest his dignity on trying to determine what sort of chimera left it behind. It took several bells worth of searching to start finding clues in the form of scraps of scaled hide on the floor, still wet with blood. This was a smell where he could identify the beast it came from and its owner hadn't gone far judging by the intense, chaotic sound of metallic scraping just down the hall. Slow, soundless footfalls carried him closer and, there, in the next chamber was a large stag-like silhouette of a Caern rubbing its antlers against a support beam with all the deliberate urgency of one scratching an itch that never ceased. With every rub, more scraps of hide dislodged and rained to the floor while still more dangled from its brutal, sharpened rack like the remnants of a murder. And although Glace made no sound, the beast still stopped and turned to stare at him. Through him. Into his very core. "Command?" Its voice rolled through the chamber and off the metal walls like approaching thunder, and it lifted its head to take in the scent of the Elezen standing there. "We are Command," Glace answered with confidence in his voice even if he didn't feel it. "Sheol is with me." The third eye in the middle of the creature's forehead widened. "Sheol is carrion." Its maw opened to reveal jaws lined with sharp teeth, "Return Command to us." The lower jaw cracked and split apart again into a something resembling mandibles, allowing it to open in a way that the beast might have been able to devour Glace whole if he couldn't stop it. "Give us Command." Better do something quick, Sheol prodded at the back of Glace's mind. Remember, we are Command. So command him to do something. "Like what?" The question was a harsh whisper, almost as though Sheol were standing in the same room with him. Anything. I can't tell him, all I can do is issue a confirmation signal. "Great... uhm... play dead?" With intention... "Play dead!" The chimera tossed its head back with a roar and crumbled to the ground in dramatic fashion, its antlers sweeping from one side to the other to try and skewer any other living being nearby in a last ditch effort to drag them into Hell with it. A moment later it lay silent with its eyes rolled back in its head, mouth agape and tongue lolling onto the floor. Even its breathing had stopped. "Well shite," Glace breathed. "Alright, you clown, get up. The floor's no place for monsters like us." He hadn't even finished speaking when the Caern started moving again, clamoring back to its feet with its head held low in deference. "Command has returned to us. We are pleased."
