I liked the part with the gouger.
Aside from a small handful of obvious nods to the original, Cat People was its own beast. Where the original kept things ambiguous, allowing room to consider Irena's curse as a metaphor, this movie was far more straightforward about the situation.
The movie looked fantastic, with excellent use of light and shadow, striking colours, and of course the stunning Nastassja Kinski. Her performance, especially her chemistry opposite John Heard, was captivating* to watch.
I loved her short hair, cute outfits, and the sensuality she brought to the role. Okay, so she transforms into a leopard and mauls people to death whenever she has sex. Big deal! All I'm saying is... I could make it work. Nobody's perfect, but she's damn close. I could fix her.
I can't overstate just how remarkably horny this movie was. Everything that happened was sexually charged, and while that did play into the core themes of sexual repression and fear of intimacy, ultimately it felt a little hollow. The ending in particular left me unsure of my take-away from the whole thing, in a way the original did not.
A pretty good movie, all things (including Nastassja Kinski) considered.
*More like CAT-tivating, am I right?

there is a homoerotic subtext to cat people though bc irene turns into a cat when she sees alice swimming, in the remake she's even swimming topless. the text says she turns into a cat out of jealousy too, but it happens in a moment where alice isn't even with her boyfriend/husband. and it really is more blatant in the remake bc alice even says she tells men she's gay 'so they won't bother her'
