A Buddy
The above photo is when we stayed later to help the engagement group set up for the holiday party. It was really fun after a very busy day, to see people come together and transform the office for everyone to enjoy. We ended up "architecting" over the smallest of details and I think everyone really enjoyed the collaboration.
Mentorship: I will commit to creating mentorship opportunities within BAC NOMAS by planning events that engage and support students, even finding a way to be more supportive to faculty as a mentee, applying some of the principles we learned at PCA that we can always teach and learn from someone else.
Sponsorship: I don’t know that I’m in a place in my life where the sponsor-protégé relationship is as much of a reality. I’m not closed off to the possibilities, I just don’t know how to go about facilitating that at this time.

Difference Between Building Planning Regulations and Planning Permissions
When planning to construct a new building or make significant changes to an existing one, most people use the terms building planning regulations and planning permission interchangeably. Though the two have an inherent connection, they aren't the same. Each is fundamental to a smooth construction process. Understanding the difference is essential, especially to avoid costly mistakes during the building process. This blog post delves into the difference between building planning regulations in London and planning permissions.
Building Planning Regulations:
Building planning regulations refer to rules and standards governing buildings' design, construction, and alteration to meet the minimum safety, health, and environmental requirements. These regulations apply to almost all commercial, industrial, and residential buildings. The regulations stipulate various requirements a building must meet, such as fire safety, insulation, energy efficiency, structural stability, and accessibility.
The regulations vary by geographic area and can be updated anytime, so you must use the current codes. Building planning regulations are under the jurisdiction of building control bodies responsible for enforcing the legislation. They work with building contractors to ensure buildings meet the code standards.
Planning Permissions:
On the other hand, planning permissions are legal consents needed when constructing a new building or making significant changes to an existing one. It's an official authorization that allows you to proceed with a proposed project within the boundaries of the local planning authorities.
When you apply for planning permission, the local authority assesses the proposal's potential impact on the environment, neighborhood, and the surrounding area. This assessment includes factors like the development's design, the materials used, and its effects on the local infrastructure. The planning permission process might involve consultation with neighbors and public hearings. Considering that just because planning permission is granted does not mean the construction conforms to the building planning regulations in Catford is vital.
What is The Difference Between Building Planning Regulations and Planning Permissions:
Building planning regulations and planning permissions are two significant aspects of the construction industry. Although often used interchangeably, they are distinct and play different roles in the construction process.
The primary difference between these two is that building planning regulations in Catford focus on maintaining minimum standards for building construction Building planning regulations are rules that govern the design, construction, and alteration of buildings to ensure the safety, health, and comfort of the occupants. The local government authority sets these regulations, and compliance is mandatory for anyone undertaking a building project. The regulations outline various requirements, including site plans, architectural drawings, drainage and sewage systems, insulation standards, and fire and electrical codes. They provide a framework for ensuring building safety and preventing accidents or other construction-related hazards.
On the other hand, planning permissions refer to the formal permission required before undertaking any building work on a future or existing structure. They are obtained through the local government authority, which is mandated to ensure the planned building work complies with the building planning regulations. Securing planning permission involves submitting a detailed application that includes various drawings, plans, and descriptions of the proposed work, including its dimensions, materials, and intended use. It is designed to safeguard the environment and the surrounding communities, ensuring that the building work does not cause any adverse impact on them.
Building regulations are compulsory and must be met while planning permission is a discretionary permit that can be granted or rejected.
Building regulations apply to small and significant structural changes while planning permission is necessary only for significant changes or completely new constructions. A property owner can make structural modifications to their home without planning permission.
Therefore, seeking professional advice from PKY DESIGN before beginning any construction project or building planning regulations in London is essential to ensure maximum compliance with the relevant regulations and to obtain planning permission for the proposed work.
Conclusion:
Knowing the difference between building planning regulations and planning permissions is essential, whether you're a developer or a regular homeowner. Understanding the requirements of each can save you from significant financial losses and ensure a smooth construction process. In brief, building planning regulations in Catford provide standards for construction, and planning permissions are necessary legal consents to carry out proposed projects. Understanding these differences can help you better understand the planning process and avoid costly mistakes.

Catford Literary Festival
The weekend of 1 and 2 October saw the inaugural Catford Literary Festival. I missed events on the first day, but I was part of the second day where I chaired two panel discussions and met many lovely people.
The Catford Literary Festival was set up by Natasha Clarkson of the Abbottshall Healthy Lifestyle Centre and the team at Lewisham Ledger, one of South East London’s independent newspapers,…
