Series, series, series – 2024 update

REVIEW
The Whole Time by Catherine Bybee
The D’Angelos #4
Perfect story for me to read today ~ Have loved every book in this series and would love to be an honorary member of this family.
What I liked:
* The return to San Diego and the D’Angelo family and catching up with the various characters from previous books in the series
* Salena Barone: restaurant manager for the D’Angelo’s restaurant, seeks independence from controlling old-fashioned parents, free spirit, responsible, caring, good friend, team player, rather intrigued by Ryan
* Ryan Rutledge: wealthy, real estate owner, into motorcycles, silent partner of Mateo, has no interest in family wine business, the black sheep of his family, protective, open, honest, caring, rather taken with Salena
* Ashlynn: owner of the pole dancing studio, highly skilled, instructor of pole dancing, has a solution for Salena’s money woes
* That I could see Ryan and Salena together – they are perfect for one another
* The family interactions and how different one family was from another
* The close community of Little Italy – want to find it next time I’m in San Diego
* Wondering if there will be a book five in this series and if so, who will be the main characters
* Thinking about pole dancing as a sport-exercise-profession-workout and wondering how difficult it would be to take up
* The epilogue – great way to end the book
What I didn’t like:
* Thinking about the pressure the daughters must have felt growing up in Little Italy
* Wondering why “mean girls-women” feel entitled to do the things they do
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series/by this author? Definitely!
Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC – This is my honest review.

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes a tale of a strong-willed dancer exercising her independence and the rich biker she can’t let go. Salena Barone has broken free of her family and moved into an apartment above the D’Angelos' restaurant, where she works as a manager—without a husband, thank you very much. But even on a restaurant salary, she soon finds herself strapped for cash. Salena’s never been afraid of living on the wild side, though, so she takes on a side hustle that’ll raise big bucks…and eyebrows, if anyone finds out. Tattooed biker Ryan is the youngest of the wealthy Rutledge wine family and has never dreamed of rings, forever, or continuing the family business. He’s perfectly happy living his own life and helping out hardworking folks in his own way. When these two independent singles spot each other at a Rutledge-D’Angelo wedding, the attraction is instant. But as their friendship with benefits evolves into something more, the secrets Salena’s keeping—from family, friends, and Ryan—threaten the happily ever after she never knew she wanted.

The way publishing will offer an 8 FIGURE deal to the same author who's been making millions in the past decade while 99% of authors struggle to make ends meet 🤢 this is why I quit and became a freelance translator. I'm not even a writer and it was so frustrating to see authors just as talented (or more, very often...) get almost nothing while a few Chosen Ones get everything. The Chosen Ones being white and wealthy, of course. I was already indignant when S/chwab was offered 1 million for her SoM sequel, or when problematic people like C/lare or M/ass announce anything new and you just know how much money must be behind it. This is just ridiculous. I'm all for authors earning more, but it should be all authors, not a few privileged ones making 8 figures while most scrap by with less than 10k per deal. If we want authors to earn more, publishers must stop spending a big chunk of their budget on one chosen author at a time. 8 figures for 12 books might very well mean 1 million per book if not more. Even with the way advances are split, that's a lot of money considering B/ardugo writes a book every year or every other year. Even if it's the smallest 8 figure possible, "just" 10 millions, that's over 800k per book. That's 8 times what a neurosurgeon makes in my country (Germany) per year 🙃 let's not even compare that to what the average author makes annually...
yeah we all know my intense hatred of seven figure deals, so y'all can imagine what an eight figure deal sounds like to me. sure, it makes some kind of sense for an author with her clout to be earning that much, but for that to be the advance? not just royalties?
i was curious, so i searched eight-figure deals in pub marketplace and these are the authors who came up between 2023 and 2003 (i'm 100% sure this is not all of them, but not every agent or publisher posts to PM, so this is absolutely not an exhaustive list): Leigh Bardugo, Janet Evanovich, Wilbur Smith (idk who that is tbh), Karin Slaughter, James Rollins, Sylvia Day, Patricia Cornwell, Sylvia Day again, Dean Koontz, and Lee Child.
by comparison, seven-figure deals are listed for Catherine Bybee, Michael Crichton, Alka Joshi, George M. Johnson and Leah Johnson, Isabel Allende, Jordan Lees, Kristen Perrin, Jennette McCurdy, Mariana Zapata, Karen Robards, Angie Thomas, TJ Klune, and Catherine Coulter. this is up to August 2022. bit nuts, no?

New Blog: WOW
It has been another weekend of craft fairs!  We have found ourselves busier than expected in some ways.  The last two days were good, although having extra lights would have been helpful today.  Some of the crafters were incredible and expensive!  WOW!  Meanwhile, I was able to get some more Christmas gifts and I was really pleased.  I am hopeful I can finish up on Saturday, but we will see.
One remarkable thing that happened today was when Gizzelda actually climbed on my shoulder and laid down for about 10 minutes.  I was shocked.  Gizzelda has never done that before.  She has been watching Yoshi and decided she could lay there too.  Another WOW.
We have snow falling, with an impact day today.  That means driving might get tricky with slipping and sliding.  Not that you could tell from the way people drive. I know a lot of us are used to driving in snow and might drive faster than the suggested speed, but WOW some people move right along.
Katy Regnery sent me her newest book to read this week!  Kodiak Lumberjack was an awesome read with great characters.  Two people who have been held down all their life.  Both for things totally out of their control, and neither family realized what they were doing.  Two people who were willing to take a jump into the unknown and deserve every moment of happiness!  The accountant Soren and the influencer Nola were quality people that you hope and root for every step of the novel.  Katy’s newest book is part of the Odds Are Good standalone romance series.  Another WOW read from Katy Regnery called Kodiak Lumberjack.
Elise sent in an interview with Catherine Bybee and her newest book, The Whole Time.  This is a book I read a while ago and loved it.  The interview really highlights information about the main characters. (https://marjaysreadingblog.com/interviews/)  As a wonderful WOW, we find out about the next book in the series, which I can’t wait to read!
I would guess then it was a WOW week, but it wasn’t.  I am working on loving the WOW moments and letting the others go.  This week has been hard - really hard, but I guess this is life and sometimes it's harder than other times.  Learning to let the WOWs help balance the yuck - My life lesson might be about learning to balance the highs and lows.

REVIEW
Beginning of Forever by Catherine Bybee
The D’Angelos #3
Wonderful ~ Thoroughly enjoyed this story ~ Hated to say goodbye when it ended!
What I liked:
* Emma Ruttledge: bright, focused, motivated, underrated, pushed aside in the family business by her father, has big decisions to make, meets an intriguing man on her trip to Tuscany, has a difficult time with her father, has more than one big issue to contend with before the end of the book
* Giovani “Gio” D’Angelo: youngest sibling, sommelier, has dreams of owning his own winery, wants to settle down and raise a family – if/when he finds the right woman, family oriented, helpful, wise, caring, kind, is perfect with and for Emma
* Getting to see the characters from previous books in the series and find out how they are doing
* The time in Tuscany and the growth of the relationship between Emma and Gio
* That I can see Gio and Emma happy together and feel that both are better off together than they are alone
* The mothers, Mari & Beth, and how much they care for their families
* The surprises, twists, turns, confrontations, and way this all came together
* That it drew me in, made me care, and I felt I was a part of the story
* Learning more about the medical situation that was faced
* Wondering what will happen to some of the characters that are still single at the end of the story: Nicole, Ryan, Salena, and Chris
* All of it really except…
What I didn’t like:
* Who and what I was meant not to like
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes

Interview with Catherine Bybee
The Whole Time by Catherine Bybee is a fun read.  Per usual, readers will love her stories that have engrossing characters, with touching and heartwarming plots.
The story is about two independent people, Selena Barone, and Ryan Rutledge. Since they have been in other books of the series, readers got to know them.  Yet, this installment shows both willing to stand up to their parents to gain their independence. Selena decides to move into an apartment owned by the D’Angelo family and work as their restaurant’s manager.  Ryan has decided to veer from the family wine business and does commercial realty.
After they meet at Gio and Emma’s wedding, sparks begin to fly.  Both are a bit on the wild side and decide to become friends with benefits.  But when cupid strikes, they seem to become involved in a relationship neither would have predicted. The problem is Selena is keeping secrets from Ryan, her family, and her “wanna be” family, the D’Angelo’s.
The story has humor, relatable real-people, and a hero/heroine who balance each other beautifully.  A bonus is that there is plenty of pages with the rest of the D’Angelo’s which makes the story even more enjoyable.
Elise Cooper: How did you get the idea for the story?
Catherine Bybee: I wanted to write a different setting with the surrounding areas, outside of San Diego. This is Selena’s book and when I first wrote about her everyone thought she and Gio were going to have the relationship. It felt like she deserved her own book.  In this climate, with a lot of young women growing up, she represents what others are dealing with, life decisions that are not the norm. I wanted to capture the fact that she had to break away from her controlling family.
EC:  How would you describe Selena?
CB:  Fiercely independent. She has a real side that everyone can identify with.  My two best friends just read the book and they both said Selena is me because although I want to be independent there is this other side of me. She is stubborn, confident, flirty, and self-assured. She is very comfortable in her own skin. She finds out that she is responsible after she takes on the job of managing the D’Angelo’s’ restaurant. She is growing up in this book.
EC:  How would you describe Ryan?
CB:  He will stand up to his powerful father. He does love his mother and sister and tolerates his father. He is a lot like Selena.  He is very self-assured. He is not cocky but confident. Not humble. He is clever. He knows when to show his cards and when to hold them.
EC:  What about the relationship between Selena and Ryan?
CB:  I think both have a lot more in common than most of my other heroes and heroines. In the beginning they both are not looking for forever. Ryan wants someone who understands him. He knows how to push Selena’s buttons. She wanted to find someone she could trust enough to open to.  She is taken back when she does find it with Ryan. She has no doubts about her sexuality and how to use it to get what she wants.  She gets her needs met. She is the male version of someone who plays the field, doing what they want with whoever they want. They challenge each other.
EC:  What about pole dancing?
CB:  I did one time.  I got it as a birthday present.  It is super hard.  The workout alone is worth it. She sells videos on the Internet. Well behaved women rarely make history.  My point is that she was not doing it naked.  She tried to balance what she wanted to do, to be successful, but not to disappoint those she cares about in her life.
EC:  What is the role of the sets of parents?
CB:  Mari D’Angelo is the mother Selena wants. Mari is like the second mom and does treat Selena like a daughter. Mari knows when to accept things and hold back the reins. I had a second mom.  Selena goes to her to ask for advice. Selena’s parents are not in tuned with what is going on.  They will not bend. Selena’s real parents are more old- fashioned. She feels she must toe the line with her parents.  Yet Ryan, does not feel he must toe the line at all.
EC:  Next book?
CB:  Mari lost her husband at an early age.  She is a single parent. I am setting readers up for a Mari book about an over fifty-five-year-old. My next, next book is titled All Our Tomorrows. It will be a part of a series. It has an unexpected death of a monarch who has a lot of money.  He has been absentee with his children. After he died the children were thrust into a world of high stakes business and money.  They do not necessarily have the stakes to do the job and at the same time are searching for a brother they just found out about. It will come out next spring.
THANK YOU!!
