Catherine Palace is located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The Rococo palace was built from 1717-23, was enlarged again from 1743-48, and rebuilt in 1752-57 in the Russian Baroque style. The palace was built for Empress Catherine I, the second wife of Peter the Great. The castle’s grandeur is credited to their daughter, Empress Elizabeth, who hired architects to redesign the building on a scale of the palace of Versailles. The result is elaborate blue and white facades with gilding and pilasters on the exterior with a lavish and opulent interior. The interior has a white dining room, a great hall, ornate banisters, marble cupids, gilded stucco walls, frescoed ceilings, a chapel, an amber room decorated in amber panels backed with gold leaf and mirrors, and much more. The palace served as the summer residence for the Russian Tsars. Catherine Palace serves as a museum with 32 open rooms. It is a World Heritage Site.
