This might sound silly but I want to start going to Mass, I've only ever been to protestant church services before. I have no idea what to expect or do or wear and I've watched a few YouTube videos but for whatever reason I'm still anxious.

I just have nasty social anxiety and I don't want to stand out as a total newbie who doesn't know what they are doing. Any advice and prayers would be appreciated

went to catholic mass for the first time today as a jewish woman.

as the incense burned my nose and eyes, i couldn’t help but think of my own great grandpa (Z”L).

the man who fled his polish sztetl so as not to become another victim of a russian pogrom.

the man who left everything he had grown up with to survive in a world that deemed he shouldn’t.

the man who had to live with the fact that every family member he had left behind fell victim to the shoah.

the man who probably felt the same way i did today the first time he went to a catholic mass.

the man whose jewish identity became nothing more than a memory.

as i looked up to the figure of jesus nailed to the cross, i couldn’t help but think about how this religion of love and kindness could also be the religion of the people who committed the most heinous acts the world had ever seen on his people. my people.

i sat on the wooden pews for the entire mass, even as the women around me glared at my magen david. leaving during services is too rude, my catholic friend tells me.

my friend bows her head and lifts her arms, the words of the lord’s prayer on her lips.

my mind finds itself once again on my great grandpa (Z”L). i wonder if the words of the shema ever crossed his lips the way the lord’s prayer crosses hers.

Also there’s a parish called St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church near so obviously it’s meant to be 😌
