the text in their pinned is stolen from a facebook post. their paypal uses a variant on her information that doesn't match what the real person has actually linked, and this account is a few days old at most. ugh.

i don't use facebook so i can't entirely verify the original posts but you can read it yourself, it seems much more legitimate than anything here. the info in this account's pinned is literally copy pasted from a post here if you scroll down a little.

IN NEED OF DERMATOLOGY TESTING AND TEETH/EAR CLEANING!

Hi there! I haven't been on tumblr in a decade so it feels really weird posting and seeing old posts, ya girl was going through it! BUT ANYWAYS. Niko is in dire need of dermatology testing, teeth cleaning and ear cleaning. She first started pulling her hair out a few years ago, it scared me to death because it happened in the middle of the night while I was sleeping.

Over time the excessive hair pulling and itching decreased after a few vet visits they gave her shots to ease the itching/biting, we tried anxiety meds for a few months (8 to be exact) and then determined that we should get dermatology testing because it is more likely to be an allergy issue. I even got blood work done and they said she's healthy THANK GOODNESS she's healthy on the inside because my heart would be BROKEN. However, it's still present. I still occasionally see chunks of hair missing. I am currently in a financial bind that prevents me from taking care of Niko's vet expenses in the way that I want to. I'm currently a student in college studying Vet Technology myself, but I'm unable to diagnose her properly so I can only speculate. Using GoFundMe was my very last resort. I understand there are more important causes people may want to donate to, but I would HIGHLY appreciate it if people donated to or shared this GoFundMe.

When you give a cat a home...

Please remember what it means.  In the USA if you want to do the right thing, most vet offices won’t simply spay/neuter a cat or dog off the street without putting them through tests (bloodwork, scanning, labs) because that’s how they screen for diseases.  And it is expensive.

We took in this little fellow, starving and rail-thin during a rotten winter storm.  He had been living on his own for quite a while, but we can’t keep him. We were saving his life. 

Fine, we thought...We’ll apply to the local shelter and pay the sliding scale fee to get him spayed and surely he will be far more adoptable that way (oh, yeah). My sister’s porch is overrun by all these cats the Crazy Cat Lady had on her porch and then she died...they all have diseases and keep breeding faster than she can keep up, and she actually found volunteers who do TNR for free.

But my application was processed at the same time the county seized multiple hoarding households and first one, then another, then another house made the news for SO MANY CATS brought to the shelter, all in physically poor condition and in need of their own neutering.  Let’s not mention names; Tacoma is a big place but not big enough to protect privacies.

The weeks ticked by with no end and sight.  We live sparingly; I have three jobs to keep up with rent and utilities and food.  My kids work too but we don’t have a car and public transportation is a minimum $62 a month for each adult. My son’s cat is diabetic and needs $160 a month in insulin and syringes; that doesn’t even cover the diabetic cat food (pro tip: FELINE FANCY FEAST CLASSIC PATE any flavor is ok for diabetic cats!).  But at $1 for a tiny little can...it adds up.  For all the household cats we pay half and that means a minimum of $150 for food and litter).  Those medical credit cards, like Kare Kredit, are great in emergencies but your ability to make payments on time is soon gobbled up by cascading recurring purchases.

This is not a bad cat.  But he was in a bad situation.

Someone must have loved him.  He was litter trained and let us clip his claws(!) But he rarely purrs, and is nervous at being brushed. Being an intact male 'Orca’ wants to spray and our cats are harassed at his high energy and desire to play. Perhaps someone just couldn’t take care of him when he stopped being an adorable and physically immature kitten. We don’t know.  We were $900 in debt taking care of our cat before he came to us, and things are getting worse.  The stool sample test for parasites costs as much as month’s supply of veterinarian insulin syringes.  The pre-op health exam cost us $268.82.  Tomorrow’s blood work will be another $50-60 and the neutering surgery alone?  I don’t even want to know and that doesn’t cover using LYFT to get him to the vet--$30 in each direction, totaling to $120.  

Surely there are cheaper vet offices?  I have no doubt.  But so many offices are full to bursting and not taking new clients.

We don’t regret bringing him in, because damn it, fair is fair.  He doesn’t deserve being cold and hungry in a place where coyotes are feeding pretty well on cats their foolish owners let loose to ‘be free’.  He came right up to us.  No one posted a LOST sign; there was no proof he had been in a home for a long time.

I don’t know about other countries, but if medical debt isn’t taken seriously for humans if you are trying to apply for food stamps and other emergency resources, they sure as hell care less about pets needing care.  System = Broken over here. We already live out of the food bank (that’s its own struggle, trust me).

If you want to take up someone’s offer for a needy pet, please don’t be nervous about offering to give a few bucks toward set pet’s care with them.  Yes, many people are proud.  But the phrase ‘pay it forward’ is pretty damn hard to argue with.  Use it.  Also, when people are stressed and wondering if this little animal is really going to a good home, offering them some money is a reassurance that you can afford to care for them.

We are humans.  Part of our responsibility is stepping up to the plate when another human fails in their obligations.  And sometimes, it really costs.

On Tuesday the 2nd of August, my cat went missing. We frantically searched for her and eventually found her 12 hours later.

She was limping on her back leg and seemed distressed. After eating something, she immediately went to my bedroom and tried climbing up on my bed. Unable to use her back leg, she dragged herself up using the front paws and started sticking her tongue out, panting. The vet later told us that this meant she was in severe distress.

We called an emergency vet at 11 pm, and he met us 20 minutes later, examined her and kept her overnight. She was X-Ray'd in the morning, and we were informed she had ripped her Achilles tendon, which meant needing surgery to hold her leg in place for six weeks with a screw to allow it to heal.

Unfortunately, when they operated on her, it was revealed she had ripped the entire tendon off, not just ripped, meaning she would need an extra hole drilled into the bone to secure the tendon.

She will need to remain in a crate for at least six weeks to reduce mobility as it heals, which will be quite hard on a cat that loves her freedom.

The vet bills and expenses are listed below, but I will add an itemized bill in the updates when I get a receipt.

Spreading the Word on a “Purrfect” Organization

Nonprofit organizations originate from a place of hope and care. It is important for nonprofit organizations to spread their message to help raise awareness of their cause. Social Media nowadays can play a huge role in spreading said message. Though most organizations may just use social media to help raise funds for their cause because it is helpful and needed, most do not see the endless possibilities to reach other people who may be willing to help in ways they never imagined.  

In Rhode Island, we have quite a few nonprofit organizations. The Nonprofit called Ten Lives Cat Rescue (https://tenlivescatrescue.org/) really caught my eye. The organization's mission is to save and help cats in need and offer services to help them until they can find a permanent home. I found from their social media accounts; they do an excellent job promoting how to help cats in need that they have. But do not mention how they can help others in rescuing cats that might be homeless, abused, (etc.). As Jacqueline Tabas put it, “A nonprofit organization can use social media to increase donations and improve its visibility by successfully employing a comprehensive social media marketing strategy. Starting and implementing a coherent strategy may take a lot of time and effort, but it has been shown to be an extremely cost-effective marketing method for many organizations. (https://www.forbes.com/sites/suzannerowankelleher/2023/10/01/universal-scares-halloween-horror-nights/?sh=518a39347690) ” Ten Lives Cat Rescue can become so much more effective and known with a social media marketing strategy. While having Facebook, Instagram, (etc.), helps, using them effectively would be even better.  

Looking into Ten Lives Cat Rescue’s Instagram page (https://www.instagram.com/tenlivescatrescue/reels/?hl=en) , they are currently regularly active on this page. They have 3,394 followers and 4,817 posts, which I would say is fair for a local organization. Their videos can receive anywhere from 200-8,000 views, and their posts receive about 50-200 likes. Posts including information about fundraising do not do badly compared to other posts, but they normally only post these promotional fundraising pictures once. The fundraising posts include the right information about the where, when and the how, but there is no consistency in promoting it. I do however think their content of cats is well formed – there are hashtags, informational captions, and well photographed/videoed content.  

Once thing I would suggest for the Instagram page is to investigate their “insights” (channel metric). This can help the page know what posts do well on their account so they can keep a theme of those posts going. On Instagram, insights can cover everything from what filters do better in posts, to what time of day followers are most active and more likely to see their posts. Amanda Demeku states “This is important for creating a content strategy that drives results for your brand or business — without it, you’re essentially working in the dark. (https://later.com/blog/instagram-analytics/) ” They can also investigate their conversation reach (advanced metric) and their number of saves on posts (behavioral metrics), to see what posts are most often talked about and shared with others.  

Next, I looked into their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/tenlivescatrescue). They are also continually active on Facebook and even reach more people. They have 6.4k followers which is a lot more than their Instagram page and have linked in their bio their email and website which is helpful for anyone looking to help. On their Facebook page they have the same posts that they have on their Instagram page but on Facebook, they have a Featured section where they include information about all their upcoming events. Their posts do well and include links and hashtags however, I ran into the same issue about their fundraising events not being promoted enough.  

I recommend their Facebook page to include more variety in their posts. Now, their page shows cat videos, pictures of cats, and one fundraising post at a time. I would suggest more funny videos of cats with informational captions about how to help cats like the ones showed, pictures of cats that show progress on how well they have done in the organizations care, and more posts promoting their fundraising events because this will help their overall Share of Conversation (advanced metrics). Tracking their impressions (channel metrics) and saves (behavioral metrics) will also help them see if these suggestions do well with their audience and gain new followers.
