“We do not mourn the death of Queen Elizabeth”
Tumblr media
[ID: logo of the EFF, Economic Freedom Fighters, which shows the continent of Africa overlaid with a fist holding a spear pointing downward, a rig on the wrist and a yellow star above the fist. / end ID]
The EFF’s Statement, posted on their Twitter on September 8, 2022, reads:
“The Economic Freedom Fighters notes the death of Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, the Queen of the United Kingdom, and the ceremonial head of state of several countries that were colonized by the United Kingdom. Elizabeth ascended to the throne in 1952, reigning for 70 years as a head of an institution built up, sustained, and living off a brutal legacy of dehumanization of millions of people across the world.
We do not mourn the death of Elizabeth, because to us her death is a reminder of a very tragic period in this country and Africa's history. Britain, under the leadership of the royal family, took over control of this territory that would become South Africa in 1795 from Batavian control, and took permanent control of the territory in 1806. From that moment onwards, native people of this land have never known peace, nor have they ever enjoyed the fruits of the riches of this land, riches which were and still are utilized for the enrichment of the British royal family and those who look like them.
From 1811 when Sir John Cradock declared war against amaXhosa in the Zuurveld in what is now known as the Eastern Cape up until 1906 when the British crushed the Bambatha rebellion, our interaction with Britain under the leadership of the British royal family has been one of pain and suffering, of death and dispossession, and of dehumanization of African people. We remember how Nxele died in the aftermath of the fifth frontier war, how King Hintsa was killed like a dog on the 11th of May 1835 during the sixth frontier war, and had his body mutilated, and his head taken to Britain as a trophy.
It was also the British royal family that sanctioned the actions of Cecil John Rhodes, who plundered this country, Zimbabwe and Zambia. It was the British royal family that benefited from the brutal mutilation of people of Kenya whose valiant resistance to British colonialism invited vile responses from Britain. In Kenya, Britain built concentration camps and suppressed with such inhumane brutality the Mau Mau rebellion, killing Dedan Kimathi on the 18th of February 1957, while Elizabeth was already Queen.
This family plundered India via the East India Company, it took over control and oppressed the people of the Caribbean Islands. Their thirst for riches led to the famine that caused millions of people to die in Bengal, and their racism led to the genocide of aboriginal people in Australia.
Elizabeth Windsor, during her lifetime, never acknowledged these crimes that Britain and her family in particular perpetrated across the world. In fact, she was a proud flag bearer of these atrocities during her reign. When the people of Yemen rose to protest against British colonialism in 1963, Elizabeth ordered a brutal suppression of that uprising.
During her 70-year reign as Queen, she never once acknowledge the atrocities that her family inflicted on native people that Britain invaded across the world. She willingly benefited from the wealth that was attained from the exploitation and murder of millions of people across the world. The British Royal family stands on the shoulders of millions of slaves who were shipped away from the continent to serve the interests of racist white capital accumulation, at the center of which lies the British royal family.
If there is really life and justice after death, may Elizabeth and her ancestors get what they deserve.”

De Algemene Verwarring #108 - 4 March 2024
Episode one hundred and eight of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, March 4, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below is Bärchen Und Die Milchbubis! They are a band from Hannover, Germany, they released one album and two singles between 1980 and 1982, and now, in 2024, they are touring again! But that's not why I played them in the show, I played them because they are one of the bands that are featured in the fantastic Inner World 033 podcast, by the World Of Echo label, and compiled by the Famous Mammals. It's a three hour long feast of great great music, and I wanted to direct my listeners to this podcast, go listen and enjoy. Also, this episode of De Algemene Verwarring is a digital one, so as always I'm playing some tracks that I don't own on a physical lp or cd. Some of them are just ripped off the youtubes because unavailable on other places, and some others are from the Bandcamp vaults. Links below in the playlist when available. I particularly enjoyed making this episode, I think there are some real bangers in there. Oh and by the way sorry for the delay with the update here. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show. Enjoy!

Title: Navigating the Literary Landscape: A Working English Major's Odyssey
Hey there, Tumblr fam! 📚✨ It's Cecille Rose Janaban, and I'm here to spill the tea on what it's really like being an English major while juggling the wild ride of being a working student. Buckle up, because we're about to dive into the pages of my academic and professional journey!
The Literary Wonderland
Tumblr media
Being an English major is like stepping into a Wonderland of words and worlds. From dissecting sonnets that make your heart skip a beat to diving headfirst into the prose of modern literary giants, it's a whirlwind of emotions, ideas, and, of course, a ton of books.
Balancing Act: Books and Bills
Tumblr media
Now, let's sprinkle in a dash of reality – working a job while dancing through the pages of Shakespeare and Woolf. Yep, I'm living that double life. It's not just about quoting poetry; it's about balancing deadlines, shifts, and, oh yeah, that thing called a social life.
Juggling Classes and Cash Registers
Tumblr media
One moment, I'm passionately discussing the nuances of post-colonial literature, and the next, I'm scanning items at the cash register. It's a weird but strangely satisfying contrast. Who knew that analyzing poetry would prep me for handling register receipts like a pro?
Time Management Olympics
Tumblr media
Now, let's talk about the real hero of this saga – time management. It's like participating in the Olympics, but instead of medals, you get a fleeting sense of accomplishment when you manage to submit an essay on time and make it to your work shift without a mad dash.
The Beautiful Chaos of Creativity
Tumblr media
Being an English major isn't just about academic rules; it's about embracing the beautiful chaos of creativity. My brain switches gears from crafting essays to concocting the perfect reply to a customer inquiry – and let me tell you, both require a hefty dose of imagination.
Late Nights with Literature
Tumblr media
Late nights are my bread and butter. Whether it's burning the midnight oil on an essay or catching up on readings after a long shift, my love affair with literature extends into the wee hours. But hey, who needs sleep when you have the magic of words to keep you company?
Coffee, Cramming, and Corporate Life
Tumblr media
The corporate world may seem worlds apart from the poetic realms I explore in my literature classes, but trust me, there's a method to the madness. Coffee becomes my trusty sidekick, cramming sessions transform into strategic planning, and suddenly, the synergy between books and bills becomes clear.
Finding my Tribe
Tumblr media
The best part? I'm not alone in this literary adventure. There's a whole tribe of English majors who share the struggle of dissecting poetry and punching in work hours. Tumblr, you're my haven – a place to connect with kindred spirits who get the beauty of a perfectly crafted sentence and the chaos of adulting.
Tumblr media
Future Chapters: Unwritten and Exciting
Tumblr media
As I continue this literary and professional saga, each day unfolds a new chapter. Who knows what the future holds – perhaps a career where I seamlessly merge my passion for literature with the practicalities of the working world.
So, here's to all my fellow English majors who are also acing the working student hustle. Keep turning those pages, crafting those essays, and punching those timecards. The journey may be challenging, but the story we're writing is uniquely ours – an odyssey of words, work, and the wonderful chaos of being an English major.
Signing off, Cecille Rose Janaban #EnglishMajorLife #WorkingStudentChronicles

Part 2 of this
"I've just never even HEARD of a taur like you before!!!" Terrance was excited, that much was evident.
Tumblr media
After gathering himself up, he had come to realise he had been in the presence of a tortoise centaur! It had taken a moment of awed silence until it was broken again by a chuckle from the stranger, who made sure to sit the young sheep down and make sure he was okay. Cecil he introduced himself as and Terry very meekly offered his own name out as they sat and began to talk together.
"It isn't a surprise to me," Cecil smiled softly. "My kind is... Well..." He didn't finish but offered a smile and a tilt of his head towards Terry. "Its wonderful to hear a new voice though... And may I ask? Are you a sheeptaur? I'm sure I felt the wool when you landed."
"Hm?" Terrance was confused, did he not see that he was a sheep? "Well, yes, I'm... Well, can't you tell?"
Cecil chuckled. "No, I cannot, I can't see."
Terry blinked and then gasped, suddenly realising why the older man's eyes seemed so distant. Oh god. He had been rude hadn't he? "You're!-"
Tumblr media
"Ruggedly handsome? My shell is very shiny?" Cecil gave a light laugh again, offering a comforting smile. "Yes, I am blind, don't fret over it, little one, not many notice at first."
"But- How did you-? Why?-"
"Heh, my staff helps," He tapped the stick in his lap. "And I've tuned myself into the sounds that are around me, no doubt it is difficult at times, you wouldn't BELIEVE how hard it is to find some good food." The elder laughed again and it caused Terrance to smile in response, he didn't know why, but he felt so much at ease around this man, his voice gravely yet smooth like silk.
"Well, what are you doing out here?" Terry asked. "All by yourself as well, isn't it dangerous out there?"
"Ah, well, its dangerous everywhere," Cecil revealed and grasped his staff with a knowing smile. "One must only know how to traverse it.
Terry made an 'O' shape with his lips, finding it rather fascinating to say the least.
"But what about you? Hm? I thought sheep stayed with the flock?"
"Oh... Well... Um...." He scratched the back of his messy head with an awkward tone.
"Ah." Cecil connected the dots and smirked. "Not meant to be out here, hm? Well, perhaps you ought to be getting off home, little one."
"But... What about you?"
"I've stayed out here for years, I know my way around, perhaps I'll stay in these woods a little longer, especially if there is kind company around." With a smile, Cecil reached out with his hand, feeling at nothing for a moment before it connected with Terry's shoulder. "You take care of yourself, try not to fall down out of the sky again, hm?"
Tumblr media
Terry could do nothing but nod in response, for a moment... Feeling captivated, warmed by something... Otherworldly? He shook it off and rose to his hooves, dusting himself off.
"Well, stay safe, okay? Maybe... I'll see you around? Tomorrow? Or... Some day soon?"
Cecil chuckled. "I hope thats a promise."
The sheep grinned, his little woolly tail wiggling happily before waving a farewell. "Bye, Cecil! See you soon!"
The tortoise lifted a hand in farewell, listened as the hooves of the sheep disappeared with the sound of rustling leaves and gentle thumping of grass. The hand lowered slightly, a moment of silence with nothing but the birds singing and the trees rustling in the breeze... And then suddenly a green light radiated from Cecil's hand, a snake summoned into existence as it wrapped around his fingers.

Years after the death of George Floyd shined a spotlight on societal inequities, diversity professionals say some companies are turning their backs on the progress that's been made to address them.
Madison Butler is one of the many diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) professionals that companies previously brought on their payroll to ensure their business is equitable and accessible for people of all backgrounds.
But in recent months, Butler said she has found it increasingly hard to find work -- and she's not alone.
DEI positions have been disproportionately hit by layoffs across industries, but particularly at tech companies, which have faced financial challenges as sales slowed from the blistering pace attained during the pandemic.
When Butler reached out to DEI professionals who planned to hire her for consulting, she said companies have told her: "'Oh, this person is no longer with the company.' 'Oh, this person has been laid off.' 'Oh, this person no longer works here effective last month.'
Melody, who is using only her first name for privacy reasons, is also a DEI professional and said she was laid off along with others on her DEI team within just a few months of their hiring.MORE: DEI: What does it mean and what is its purpose?
"It's difficult to be somewhere for a brief period of time and feel like you didn't even have the time to make the impact you wanted to make," Melody told ABC News.
"The workplace is so full of human beings and we're not robots," she added. "We definitely need people at work who can help us feel like we belong there."
Nationwide call to action
George Floyd, a Black man, was killed by a Minneapolis police officer in May 2020 during an arrest. His death prompted a nationwide movement in which protesters demanded individuals and organizations alike take action in addressing societal injustices that impact historically marginalized groups.
To do this, some companies sought out the expertise of DEI professionals like Butler and Melody.
"We suddenly saw everyone coming out of the woodwork wanting to hire a lot of them, hiring inaugural DEI folks," Melody said. "And you had to wonder, like, are people actually ready for this? Or is this a trend that we're seeing?"
DEI initiatives are often intended to address workplace culture and conditions, such as inaccessibility in the workplace for disabled people, poor retention rates for workers of color and other inequalities faced by marginalized groups.MORE: Rise in anti-LGBTQ hate and extremism captured in new reports
From September 2019 to September 2020, job postings for diversity, inclusion and belonging positions on the hiring website Indeed rose by 56.3%, the company said.
A LinkedIn study found that chief diversity and inclusion officer positions grew by 168.9% from 2019 to 2022.
The rapid organizational movement toward addressing inequalities was initially exciting for DEI professionals. But in just a couple of years, that excitement wavered as growth rapidly fell apart.
"The honeymoon is over," Cecil Howard, a DEI consultant and former chief diversity officer at the University of South Florida, told ABC News.
"Right after George Floyd's killing, everybody who didn't have a diversity office quickly created a diversity office," he added. "A few years later, they started realizing, 'We checked the box and things are a little quieter now.'"
DEI begins to disappear
Starting in late 2020 -- months after the killing of Floyd set off a racial reckoning -- a host of companies escalated cuts of DEI professionals, a survey of more than 600 companies from data firm Revelio Labs found.
Last year, the layoffs accelerated significantly, the study found.MORE: Where guaranteed income programs are growing in the US
One in three DEI professionals lost their roles over a one-year period ending in December, the survey said. Over that period, the study added, non-DEI workers experienced a relatively lower attrition rate of 21%.
The job losses owe to several trends: a sluggish economy that prompted cost cuts, a softening of the scrutiny that held corporations to account over racial justice and a rise of conservative backlash against DEI, some DEI professionals told ABC News.
"In 2020 a lot of organizations reacted to the market, reacted to social events taking place without really having a clear understanding of what DEI is and how it should be enabled in business," Christie Lindor, a diversity strategist and CEO of Tessi Consulting, told ABC News.
"When things get rough, these are the areas that go," Lindor added.
Speaking to laid-off DEI professionals, Howard noticed job losses concentrated among individuals who criticized an employer's diversity-related policies or offered ambitious ideas for reform, he said.
"The separations weren't coming from organizations that were really serious about enhancing their culture," he said, describing a chilling effect for DEI professionals: "We don't need you to be a voice; we need you to be a face."
At the same time, conservative elected officials such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began to target DEI initiatives.
DeSantis last month signed into law a bill that prohibits state or federal spending on DEI programs at public universities in Florida.
The acronym, DeSantis said, should be reinterpreted as "discrimination, exclusion and indoctrination."
In February, Abbott's office ordered state agencies to stop using diversity, equity and inclusion programs in hiring, calling them "illegal."
Abbott's chief of staff, Gardner Pate claimed these programs "proactively encourage discrimination in the workplace," and do the opposite of what they claim to do.
And in June, Abbott signed a ban on diversity offices in state-funded higher education institutions.
In a statement, a spokesperson from Abbott's office told ABC News that "the issue is not diversity – the issue is that equity is not equality, and DEI practices conflate the two."
The statement continued, "Some universities and woke professors have been using DEI to advance political agendas and exclude conservative viewpoints on college campuses. These efforts adversely affect our students, limit exposure to diverse thought, and destroy our education system."
DeSantis' office did not respond to ABC News' requests for comment.
Lindor accused elected officials like Abbott and DeSantis of "weaponizing" DEI for political purposes, calling conservative political attacks one of the "driving forces" behind cuts in the field.
Butler and Melody believe that anti-DEI policies intend to turn back progress made by marginalized groups toward equality.
"People fear losing power," said Butler. "So much of this work has to be centered around deconstructing things like white supremacy, deconstructing status quos. And those status quos and white supremacy protect people in positions of power."
Without these DEI policies, professionals fear that organizations may fall back into patterns that create unhealthy or exclusive work cultures that drive away diverse candidates, employees and customers alike.
"If we don't have employees that understand people of different cultures, different backgrounds – companies are going to find themselves losing good employees to discriminatory practices," said Brit Levy, a former DEI employee who was laid off from Meta.MORE: How Colorado Springs, with a history of hate, built LGBTQ safe spaces after the Club Q shooting
She continued, "It's going to be an uphill battle for retention. Employee morale is going to go down because now you have these employees that feel like targets they have targets on their back."
Companies choosing to slash DEI programs could face difficulty hiring candidates from underrepresented groups and understanding the needs of a diverse customer base, Lindor said.
"It's not just about being progressive as an organization," Howard said. "Start looking at the bottom line."
Some states that have banned workplace affirmative action -- a diversity initiative that allows employers to consider race as one factor in hiring -- saw that such bans negatively impacted diversity in the workplace, according to a Harvard study. The study analyzed the workforces of four state government following the ban and found that these states saw significant declines in the number of Black women, Latino men and Asian women working there.
Meanwhile, the number of white men in the workplaces increased, the study says.
Diversity has also proven to be good for business, according to several studies that indicate that companies that are more diverse are more innovative and in turn, more profitable.
Companies that fail to diversify could fall behind, especially in the tech industry, where a surge in the development of AI has heightened the importance of innovation, Lindor said.
"We're seeing more candidates who want to join companies that align with their values," Lindor said. "It's difficult for companies to authentically say DEI is a priority when they're cutting."
"We're going to start to see the results of that in the marketplace in the years to come," she added.

"i swear i love you" she says, knowing full well the scene will rip my heart out
how dare you Rose. how dare you
jk
but you owe me some fluff :( some domestic comfort fluff or something. idk you'll come up with something I'm sure
let your characters breathe a little
(love you too!)
(@ink-fireplace-coffee)
It's because I love you that I want to make you feel ✨emotions✨
I scoured every corner of the BBtS and RWR files and apparently I've already posted all the fluff content (which amounts to maybe two scenes)?
So here's some freshly written domesticity just for you <3 A little gift to keep you company and hopefully cheer you up despite the cold!
Set during the last chapter of BBtS book 1. For context, Evelyn and Lily are off having a meeting with the Thirteen (the, y’know, leaders of the country. No biggie), and this is what the rest of the gang is doing off-screen. Also, my first time writing from Andrew’s POV, for some reason.
CW: food
The door flew open and Andrew almost had a heart attack. He managed to keep his grip on the pan and shot a warning glance behind his back.
“Please, we’re cooking!”
“Sorry!” trilled Cecilia’s voice. “Just came to check how you’re doing. The ferry is supposed to dock in five minutes.”
“I’m aware.” Andrew sautéd the broccoli and feta cheese in the pan, then covered it with the lid and bolted to the table in the middle of the kitchen, where a tray full of vegetables, one with various dips, one with slices of bread, and Serena, waited. “Don’t worry, we are perfectly on schedule. Jeremy, can you turn off the stove under the pan?”
Jeremy, crouched in front of the oven, snapped their fingers and the fire went out. “I think the brownies are ready.”
“Crunchy crust but soft middle?” Andrew asked, while he grabbed a knife and started chopping zucchini and cherry tomatoes.
“Yeah.”
“Then set the temperature to the minimum and you can drain the pasta in” – he checked his phone – “three minutes. Taste it first, of course.”
“Aye, captain.”
Andrew quirked an eyebrow in their direction, but continued his work and mixed the vegetables with lettuce, walnuts and peas, then set the bowl aside. Out of the corner of his eye, he followed Serena as she took the tray of dips and brought it to Cecilia, who regarded her with a perplexed look.
“What are these for?”
“The bread and focaccia that are waiting in the other oven.”
“Andrew,” called Cecilia, “did you ask the cooks to use the kitchen because you’re planning on feeding the entire academy?”
“I’m planning” – he paused to fish a packet of smoked salmon, one of cured ham, one of salami and one of scamorza slices from the fridge – “on feeding eight of us and Evelyn, who counts double.”
“That’s a bit dramatic,” chimed Serena.
“You haven’t seen the delivery bills from anime night.”
“Hello!”
This time, the door opened with enough force to hit the wall. Victoria, and Annabelle behind them, winced at the sound.
“Oops.” Victoria closed the door gently and put the enormous picnic basket they were carrying on the table. “We brought the basket, the blanket,” – a plaid cloth hung on Annabelle's free arm – “and some beverages. Which are in the basket. I guessed Evelyn would be in charge of the water.”
Andrew finished assembling the tartlets, then turned to the sink to wash his hands and, still dripping water, brushed a rebellious lock from his forehead. “Great. A couple of minutes and we’re done.”
“Can I have a box for the pasta?” asked Jeremy from the stove.
Despite the crutch, he seemed to have no difficulty sautéing the pasta in the pan with the cheese and broccoli sauce. Andrew offered him the box and Jeremy proceeded to pour the steaming pasta in it. When he turned, Annabelle took his place and placed a kiss on Jeremy’s cheek.
At the table, Serena, Victoria and Cecilia were playing a game of jenga trying to fit everything in the basket.
“Oh, shit.” Victoria facepalmed. “We forgot the plates.”
With a collective groan, they and Serena emptied the basket, while Cecilia retrieved the dishes and cutlery. On the other side of the room, Jeremy scrubbed the stove with a wet rag and Annabelle put the used pots in the dishwasher.
As he moved around the kitchen sprinkling oregano here and powdered sugar there, Andrew began making a mental checklist: pasta, salad, tartlets, bread, focaccia, dips, brownies for dessert...
“The cream puffs!”
He retrieved the tray from the fridge, then the chocolate cream filling. Victoria stared at the final product with wide eyes that screamed murder.
“Why in hell did I propose this picnic?”
“Because” – Serena accepted the platter Andrew was still holding and, a smile on her face, kissed Victoria’s temple with a sonorous smack – “you’re amazing and know we deserve to celebrate after what happened.”
Victoria tapped their index finger on their pursed lips, showing off a mock pensive expression. “Mmh... You could try and convince me better with a real kiss.”
Andrew and Serena chuckled at the same time. She set the cream puffs in the basket and cupped Victoria’s face with her hands, for once free of rings.
A loud claps startled everyone in the kitchen.
Cecilia glared at them. “The ferry has definitely docked by now. Let’s go.” She punctuated her words with a snap of her fingers. “You can make out later.”
Victoria sent her a annoyed look, but Cecilia was already outside the door.
“Come on.” Andrew grabbed the basket. “We don’t want to ruin the surprise.”
Jeremy flipped the rag onto their shoulder. “I spent the last hours cooking for those two. They better be fucking thrilled anyway.”
A laugh rose in the kitchen and carried on in the hallway as they headed for the park.
Sorry this ended up being unnecessarily long lol (also it’s late). Hope you liked it, take care! <3

Vera Doyle - Easy Company's redheaded Angel
Part One
Part two
Part three
Masterlist
This is a story about my OC Vera Cecile Doyle. It started as a Oneshot but somehow turned out to be much longer. 😂 The first chapter is a bit boring, but you need to star somewhere, right? Ok, so, now let me introduce to you my favorite redheaded woman: Vera Cecile Doyle.
I do not own anything but my own character (Vera Doyle). This fanfiction is only based on the tv series band of brothers and the portrayal by the actors, not on the real heroes of the airborne who fought during world war 2.
She was 13 when they left France and moved to America. Two years after Hitler came to power and the rise of the Nazis. Her father, an Irish doctor, fell in love with a French nurse during the last great war and stayed in France for love after the war. Alsace was her beloved home, in the small village of Weyersheim she felt comfortable between fig trees and rose bushes. The world seemed to be at her feet, as soon as she opened her mouth and crooned soft melodies like the birds, everyone was instantly hooked.
The red-haired girl was often found in the fields with the horses, goats, sheep or in the stable with the kittens. She liked to climb trees and enjoyed the fresh fruit she picked from the branches.
And although she missed her home and her family, she was never homesick. She found her second home in the USA, even if she never felt as comfortable as in France. Shortly after her arrival, her wonderful singing fell silent and she only let it sound to herself. For a long time, she struggled to fit in, make friends. Although she didn't stand out much in Louisiana when she slipped French words into her sentences, she struggled a lot with being accepted by others. She was always an outsider. The redhead with a French mother and an Irish father. Many nicknames have accumulated over the years. Witch. Paddy. Froggy. Frenchie. Ginger. New ones kept coming and at some point she stopped counting.
Since her father was a doctor and even had his own practice, it made sense that she would become a nurse like her mother. And she was good. Actually very good. The patients loved her. There was something very specific about her manner, people could feel comfortable in her presence without her doing anything, they trusted her and immediately felt better when she just walked into the room and smiled. Not only did she learn how to treat simple wounds, her father took her to every patient, explained and showed her everything he knew until she finally knew almost as much as he did. She fixed broken bones, relocated joints under his supervision, and with his help also tended to more serious injuries, men who got caught in a saw and cut off a finger, gunshot wounds when a shotgun accidentally went off. If she had wanted, she could have replaced her father on many days.
After Pearl Harbor was bombed and the USA was involved in the war, like most young people her age, she enlisted in the army. Like her mother, she wanted to take care of wounded soldiers as a nurse and bring new hope to the injured with her kind. Of course, her parents weren't thrilled about it. They survived the last war, its horrors, death and destruction. And they didn't want to subject their little princess to that. But she never cared about what others said, she always did what came into her mind and nobody could stop her. One of her father's bad traits that she inherited.
Her talents and exceptional knowledge were quickly noticed. She originally volunteered for USANC, but after a few months she was offered to join a unit as a medic. Something completely new. Only a few women were granted the opportunity to join an actual battalion. Of course she agreed. She always wanted to do her best and probably she could do that better directly at the front and in the field than just in a hospital. After a few weeks she was assigned to Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, the best of the best.
Although she was really happy about it and incredibly proud, some worries entered her mind. She was alone among men. She knew it wouldn't be taken very well if a woman, the weaker sex, mingled with a company of men. But she stood by her decision. After all, there must have been a reason why she had been offered this job. In the fall of 1942 she met Easy Company and joined them in their training.
"I'm Vera Cecile Doyle." With a friendly smile on her lips, she took the man's hand in front of her and shook it.
"I am pleased to meet you. I'm George, George Luz." His dark eyes studied her as he shook her hand. Neither of them knew that this would develop into an incredible friendship. George was the first to introduce himself and take her under his wing. He took care of her and introduced her to the others. He's the reason she finally fit in, the first time since she left France.
“Another Irishman? As if Malarkey wasn't enough.” was Bill Guarnere's first statement when George invited her to a bar on a Friday night. But a close friendship was soon to develop between the two, which could best be described as a love-hate relationship.
She first met Skip and Penkala properly on a rainy day. They came to her rescue when she slipped through the mud and cracked her ankle on her first run up the Currahee. Of course, Sobel immediately forbade the men to help her, but when Sobel was nowhere in sight, the two supported her again and again until they arrived safely at the foot of the mountain again.
"Come on, we'll help you.", Skip offered her when she could barely walk and hobbled to the Mess Hall after everyone else. He carefully put her arm over his shoulder to support her. Alex did the same with her other arm and together they brought her out of the rain to a barrack where Eugene Roe examined her ankle.
Of course she could have taken care of her ankle on her own, but the dark-haired Cajun man didn't give her any other chance. A piercing look was enough to silence her. He reluctantly bandaged her ankle after she repeatedly insisted that everything was fine. He would have preferred a real doctor to look at it. But she thought a simple, firm cast would do. Even later, not only Roe will despair of her stubbornness.
She gritted her teeth and finally walked into the Mess Hall with Muck and Penkala where they sat down with George, Perconte, Bull and some others. For a long time she didn't notice another redhead watching her eat, she was too deep in a conversation with George, who was sitting in front of her.
"Are you going to stare her to death or are you finally going to talk to her?" whispered Muck to Malarkey. Both sat diagonally across from Vera and Muck kept trying to have a conversation with Malarkey, who in turn was unresponsive.
"What?" It took a hearty jab with the elbow to snap Malarkey out of his trance-like state and turn back to Muck.
"Talk to her before your eyes start popping out of your head.", he asked Don, but Malarkey just shook his head and tried unsuccessfully to talk his way out of the situation.
"No, maybe later. I don't want to interrupt their conversation." Muck and Penkala both rolled their eyes and Penkala, who was sitting next to Vera, finally nudged her arm.
"Hey, your parents are from Ireland, aren't they?" he finally asked when Vera turned to face him. Mouthful of mashed potatoes, she nodded hastily.
"Yes, my dad's from Ireland," she explained after swallowing the tasteless mash.
"What a coincidence!" Muck clapped his hands in surprise, and although his surprise was poorly acted, or perhaps because of it, Vera inevitably had to smile. "Our dear friend Don here also has Irish roots!"
Vera looks at Malarkey a little surprised, but she should have noticed already that there was something irish about him.
"Really?" she asked. Malarkey nodded a little uncertainly at first, but after a reassuring smile from Penkala, he started talking and smiled politely at her. A lively conversation developed about their origins and they realized that their families came from the same area. Donald talked about his family, Vera about hers, Muck and Penkala leaned back with a satisfied grin and watched as something very special developed between the two. Later both should be able to understand each other without words, as if they had an inner connection to each other that allows them to hear each other's thoughts.
Later, when everyone reunited for the next exercise session, the two Irishmen were practically glued to each other, whispering, laughing and talking to each other as if they were old friends who hadn't seen each other in years.
"Imma kill the guy who came up with the brilliant idea of bringing the two irish bastards together," Guarnere growled at the sight and turned to Joe Toye. Joe, however, had to make an effort to hide his grin.
But all in all she settled in well in the company and found her place. She developed deep friendships with some of the men. She, Malarkey, Muck and Penkala were almost inseparable and George Luz rarely left her side.
Even though the training was hell and Sobel tried everything to make their lifes as difficult and uncomfortable as possible, she loved the time there. She could finally do something meaningful with what she loved doing. Her strive for challenge and significance was fulfilled in the Army.
The day of days was fast approaching. Before they left the country by ship, she had the chance to say goodbye to her family. Her mother cried bitterly and even her father, whom she never saw cry, shed a few tears as he hugged them goodbye. No one knew if they would ever see each other again. And so they stood on the platform for minutes and hugged each other.
Vera had had her hair cut the morning before. Her red locks, gleaming like copper in the sun, barely reached her shoulders now. As a souvenir of her beloved daughter, her mother took one of the strands, wrapped a fine ribbon around it and placed it in the box on her bedside table along with her most valuable jewelry. Her father had insisted on having one last photograph taken so they could forever look at their innocent daughter when they missed her. Vera also put a photograph of her parents in her breast pocket so that she could always carry it with her.
Although she missed her old homeland very much and would give anything to be back in France, she prayed to go to the Pacific so she would not see the suffering and destruction in Europe with her own eyes. It would kill her from the inside.
The train was approaching and she already had her mother at arm's length. But she tried again to cling to her only daughter.
"Maman...", Vera sighed and now had to fight back the tears herself.
"N'y vas pas, ma chérie, restes avec moi." Her mother sobbed, but Vera couldn't comply with the request to stay with her.
"I love you. I'll be back, I promise!" She had to say goodbye to her parents and disappeared into the crowd that was piling onto the train. Wistfully she looked out of the window and saw how her parents were getting smaller and smaller until the train went around a curve and the small station disappeared.

3 Beds, 2 Baths, 1 Ghost
Synopsis: Newly single Anna is trying to prove to her Father and herself that she can sell her first home! Unfortunately, the house happens to be haunted by a socialite Ruby, who had died in a car crash 100 years prior.
The movie opens with the Charleston record playing on a turntable. There are origins of the song in Black history. If you didn't know, Charleston rose to popularity in late 1923. It was in the Broadway show Runnin Wild. The song was created by African American artists James P Johnson and Cecil Mark. Running Wild was filled with Black talent and it ended up capturing national and international popularity.
3 Beds, 2 Baths, and 1 Ghost was set in the town of Seaside New Jersey. I wondered throughout the movie whether Seaside was supposed to be a small-town. Hallmark loves to set its stories in small towns to add a cozier feel to its movies and shows. There was nothing to suggest it was a small town other than her (Julia) doctor knowing about her breakup with Elliot. Which can I say is a little weird? She came in concerned after seeing Ruby for the first time. He mentioned that he'd known her for a long time, but it still didn't seem appropriate under the circumstances. It seemed dismissive.
This film was released on April 24, 2023, by Hallmark. Julia Gonzalo plays Anna in the film. Julia Gonzalo is Argentinian and played Miss Rojas in Supergirl. Madeleine Arthur plays Ruby, the fabulous ghost. She is probably best known for her role as Kris in the To All the Boys series. Their dynamic in the movie reminded me of Annie and Hallie's dynamic in the 1998 Parent Trap. It was very sisterly. They both had great chemistry together. You could tell they grew to love each other by the end.
Got to say wasn't a fan of the men in this film. Terrance, played by William Vaughan, did make a good antagonist. He was the perfect amount of a smarmy and power-hungry. Every time he was on screen, he annoyed me in seconds. I disagree with Julia telling her Dad to give the company to Terrance. Hallmark seems to have a habit of rewarding men's bad behavior.
Julia's Dad, played by Xavier Sotelo got off too easy when his controlling behavior throughout the movie had been problematic. He kept pressuring and underestimating Julia. He did not act as though she could handle the listing. He seemed more concerned with how her 'mistakes' would affect him than Julia's feelings. Anytime he thought she'd made a mistake, he was there to berate her and then rush away to deal with clients.
This could have been a series that expanded on some interesting points in the film. One is the reason why Julia was able to see Ruby. Instead of it being because of her connection with Elliot, I think it would have been cool if she was a medium, but she hadn't realized it until Ruby. There could easily be a familial origin, which gives Hallmark a reason to hire more Latine actors. I would love to see others come in to offer her guidance on specific cases even if that is through one mentor. The different insights from seasoned Spiritualists could be cool. I want to see her grow and come into her power. She found her true passion in helping Ruby and is just using real estate as a front to research and explore possibly haunted sites. Like Buffy and many supernatural heroines throughout film and television, she'd become a badass. The romance between Anna and Elliot could also be expanded on. One thing I liked about 3 Beds, 2 Baths, and 1 Ghost was that it didn't wrap their relationship up in a pretty bow. They acknowledged that there were still things to work through. The power of love didn't magically make them forget all their issues. I would like to see them gradually working on rebuilding their relationship. It could be a nice secondary plotline. I love the 'Mortal' and Supernatural partner dynamic. Think Samantha and Darrin from Bewitched, but Elliot treats Anna WAY better. There is a lot of possibility there. Hallmark dropped the ball by having the movie end in such a predictable way.

I am proud of my dear friend Joey Albert, who flew to Manila for gigs and shows. She was a guest at Pops Fernandez's anniversary concert at Solaire last week. She had a Valentine's Concert at Manila House last night. Tomorrow evening, she will be with The Company and several other performers for the Wish 107.5 FM Tides Concert at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Millennials may not remember that Joey is the original vocalist behind some of the songs they grew up with, including:
Louie Ocampo and Allan Ayque's "Tell Me"
Jose Mari Chan's "I Remember the Boy"
Danny Tan and Jose Javier Reyes's "Iisa pa lamang"
Louie Ocampo and Freddie Santos's "Memories"
Louie Ocampo and Freddie Santos's "Points of View" (her iconic duet with Pops Fernandez)
Louie Ocampo and Freddie Santos's "Yakapin mo ako"
Louie Ocampo and Joey Albert's "Ikaw lang ang mamahalin"
Louie Ocampo, Joey Albert, and Janice de Belen's "It's Over Now"
Louie Ocampo and Jim Millbower's "Without You"
Cris Kuizon's "Say you're mine"
Robert More's “Million Miles Away"
Gerry Paraiso's "Over and Over"
Cecile Azarcon's "Goodbye"
Odette Quesada’s “Loving you” Ray-Ann Fuentes's "Porma ng porma"
Tony Perez and Allan Ayque's "Back in My Arms"
Luigi de Dios and Rina Caniza's "Only a mem'ry."
Luigi de Dios and Rina Caniza's "Roses in the Rain"
Luigi de Dios and Rina Caniza's "Brief Encounter"
Jose La Vina's "Just for a while"
Paola Luz's "How can I make you see"
Joey Albert's "Paano Sasabihin"
Archie Castillo and Onie Zamora's "Sa aking pagbabalik"
Manoling V. Francisco S.J., Silvino Borres and Philip Gan's "Sa 'yo lamang"
National Artist for Music Ryan Cayabyab and Jose Javier Reyes's "Kumukutitap."
Vancouver-based, she survived three cancers and continues to sing and write music, largely to support the Marian Missionaries of the Holy Cross-YMC, a Filipino Religious Congregation for priests and brothers founded in 1976 by Joey's mom, Mrs. Leticia Tordesillas Albert ( https://marian-missionaries.com/aboutus.html / https://www.facebook.com/mmhcymcofficial )
2024 marks her 43rd year as a musical artist. After listening to her latest single, Kundimang Kupas (By Robert More, composer, and lyricist of her 1980s hit, "A Million Miles Away"), I am convinced there are greater reasons why Joey Albert overcame her illnesses. Her meaning and purpose through music have empowered her to live.

Microwave popcorn
Tumblr media
#Microwave popcorn movie#
One of the worst things about microwave popcorn are the chemicals in the bag that it comes in. Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs) in The Bag In 2012, a Colorado man won a lawsuit against 3 microwave popcorn companies for damages caused by bronchiolitis obliterans contracted from regularly consuming microwave popcorn.ģ. Cecile Rose, a leading lung expert concluded that microwave popcorn was the reason for her patient’s lung disease. When a bag of microwave popcorn is heated, this causes the chemical diacetyl to vaporize, thus allowing consumers to breath in the chemical.ĭr. However, factory workers are not the only ones at risk for bronchiolitis obliterans (popcorn lung). Most popcorn brands use an artificial butter flavoring in their microwave popcorn called diacetyl.Ĭertain studies found severe lung and respiratory issues connected to diacetyl, so much so that The Occupational Safety and Health Administration now recommends controlling exposure to protect factory workers who work around diacetyl. Reports of popcorn lung from additional factories were revealed later.Ģ. In extreme cases it can become life-threatening.Īccording to the Centers for Disease Control, at least 8 factory workers in Missouri, who worked in popcorn factories developed this lung disease. Unfortunately, this disease is irreversible and can cause lung inflammation, scarring and even restricted airflow resulting in breathing trouble. The lung problems associated with the artificial butter flavoring (diacetyl) has afflicted enough people to even garner it’s own disease name– it’s called “popcorn lung” or bronchiolitis obliterans. Don’t worry though, there are healthier ways to enjoy popcorn! 5 Reasons to Avoid Microwave Popcorn: 1. Most people enjoy a nice bowl of popcorn when sitting down for a movie, but when you know how some of the ingredients might affect you, you may want to avoid it. Without further ado, SPY’s official ranking of the best microwave popcorn brands. Is microwave popcorn bad for you? If your health is important to you, you may want to think twice before consuming it regularly Below are a few reasons why. Hey, it’s a hard job, but someone’s gotta do it. I gathered all different types of popular microwave popcorn brands, from healthy choices and the self-proclaimed “movie theater popcorn” to all in-betweeners.
#Microwave popcorn movie#
So, for the sake of bettering the human race, I took it upon myself to test out 10 of the most popular microwave popcorn brands to rank, once and for all, which ones come close to emulating the sweet, sweet taste of our beloved movie theater popcorn. In the absence of going to the movies, or for those times when you just want to stay in for a movie night, microwave popcorn is a great alternative. And as a kid who used to go to the movie theater every weekend with his dad (who happily participated in the testing of this assignment), let’s just say I know a thing or two about movie theater popcorn. Now, I’m not going to pretend to know what cinemas put in that popcorn that makes it so good, but it’s so addictive and delicious. However, the best part about going to the movie theater is getting to smell and taste that fresh buttery popcorn. Perhaps it’s the amazing sound systems and comfy recliner chairs, or maybe it’s the experience of watching a movie with a bunch of random strangers and enjoying a collective emotion together. There’s just something magical about the movie theater experience. Why? Three words: movie theater popcorn.Įven though there are still a few movie theaters open around the country at the time of this writing, I’m eager for the day where I can freely go to the cinema and enjoy a movie. I really miss going to the movie theater. If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, SPY.com may receive an affiliate commission.

Pioneering Black Actors of Hollywood By Susan King
Tumblr media
Clarence Muse and Rex Ingram by Susan King Thirty years ago, the legendary Oscar-winning actor Sidney Poitier reflected on the Black performers who paved the way for him in the Los Angeles Times: “The guys who were forerunners to me, like Canada Lee, Rex Ingram, Clarence Muse and women like Hattie McDaniel, Louise Beavers and Juanita Moore, they were terribly boxed in. They were maids and stable people and butlers, principally. But they, in some way, prepared the ground for me.”
Poitier prepared the ground for such contemporary Black actors and directors currently in competition during the 2021 awards season such as Regina King and Leslie Odom Jr. (One Night in Miami), Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), the late Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom), Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holiday) and Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah).
But it is imperative to remember the veterans from the 1930s-1960s who tried to break out of stereotypes and maintain dignity at a time when Hollywood wanted to “box” them in.
Clarence Muse
Tumblr media
Muse appeared in countless Hollywood films often uncredited. And as Donald Bogle points out in his book Hollywood Black, Muse spoke his mind to directors if he felt he was being pushed around or when his characters were stereotypes. Bogle stated, “At another time when Muse questioned the actions of his character in director King Vidor’s 1935 Old South feature SO RED THE ROSE, Vidor recalled that Muse was quite vocal in expressing his concerns. A change was made. Vidor could not recall exactly what the issue was, but he never forgot Muse’s objection.”
The 1932 pre-Code crime drama Night World screened at the 2019 TCM Classic Film Festival to a standing-room only crowd. The film stars Lew Ayres, Boris Karloff and Muse as the doorman at a club owned by Karloff. The audience was surprised that such a stereotypical role was anything but thanks to Muse’s poignant performance. Instead of being forced to be the comic relief, Muse’s Washington is a man worried about his wife’s surgery at a local hospital. Though his boss doesn’t treat him as an equal—after all it is 1932—Karloff’s Happy shows general concern toward Washington.
Muse, said Bogle, “also worked in race movies, where he realized there was still a real chance for significant roles and narratives.” One such was BROKEN STRINGS (’40), which he also co-wrote. It’s certainly not a great film, but Muse gives a solid turn as a famed Black violinist who wants his young son to follow in his footsteps. But the son wants to play swing with his violin.
Muse, who was a graduate of Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, also co-wrote the Louis Armstrong standard “Sleepy Time Down South.” In the 1920s, he worked at two Harlem theater companies, Lincoln Players and Lafayette Players, and 23 years later he became the first African American Broadway director with Run Little Chillun. He continued to act, appearing in Poitier’s directorial debut BUCK AND THE PREACHER (’72), CAR WASH (’76) and THE BLACK STALLION (’79) and was elected to the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1973. He died one day before his 90th birthday in 1979.
Rex Ingram
Tumblr media
Tall and imposing, Ingram had a great presence on the big screen and a rich melliferous voice. No wonder his best-known role was as the gigantic Genie in the bottle in Alexander Korda’s lavish production of THE THIEF OF BAGDAD (’40). Born in 1895, he began his film career in movies such as Cecil B. DeMille’s THE TEN COMMANDMENTS (’23). Ingram also has the distinction of playing God in THE GREEN PASTURES (’36) and Lucifer Jr. both on Broadway in 1940 and in the 1943 film adaptation of the musical CABIN IN THE SKY.
Ingram also brought a real humanity to his role as the slave Jim in MGM’s disappointing THE ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN (’39), starring a miscast Mickey Rooney, who was way too old at 19 to play the part. Ingram, though, breaks your heart when he talks to Huck about how his dream is to earn enough money to buy his freedom so he could join his wife and child living in a free state. And when he runs away, Ingram explains to Huck why he had to flee the widow Douglas: “If one of them slave traders got me, I never would get to that free state. I would never see my wife, or little Joey.”
He also is superb in Frank Borzage’s noir MOONRISE (’48) as Mose Johnson, the friend of the murderer’s son Danny (Dane Clark), who lives in a shack in the wilderness with his coonhounds. Noble and thoughtful, Mose is the film’s conscience and helps guide Danny to do the right thing after he kills a bully (Lloyd Bridges) in self-defense.
Ingram was one of the busiest Black actors at the time and at one point even served on the Board of the Screen Actors Guild. But the same year MOONRISE was released, he was arrested and pleaded guilty for transporting an underage girl from Kansas to New York. He served a prison sentence and for a long time his career was derailed. He even lost his home. Though his film career was never the same upon his release, he worked in TV and on the Broadway stage, appearing in Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, and died in 1969 at 73 shortly after doing a guest shot on NBC’s The Bill Cosby Show.
Ernest Anderson
Tumblr media
Anderson never achieved the notoriety of Muse and Ingram, but the actor gave an extraordinary performance in the Bette Davis-Olivia de Havilland melodrama IN THIS OUR LIFE (’42) directed by John Huston. Born in 1915, Anderson earned his BA at Northwestern University in drama and speech. He was recommended for his role in the movie by Davis, who saw the young man working at the commissary on the Warner Bros.’ lot.
Anderson plays Parry, the son of the Davis-de Havilland family’s maid who aspires to be a lawyer. Davis’ spoiled rotten Stanley Timberlake gets drunk, and while driving she kills someone in a hit-and-run accident. Stanley throws Parry under the bus telling authorities he was the one driving the car.
Initially, the script depicted Parry in much more stereotypical terms, but Anderson went to Huston and discussed why he wanted to play the character with dignity and intelligence. Huston agreed. And for 1942, it’s rather shocking to see a studio film look at racism as in the scene where Parry tells de Havilland’s Roy why he wants to be an attorney:
“Well, you see, it’s like this, Miss Roy: a white boy, he can take most any kind of job and improve himself. Well, like in this store! Maybe he can get to be a clerk or a manager. But a colored boy, he can’t do that. He can keep a job, or he can lose a job. But he can’t get any higher up. So, he’s got a figure out something he can do that no one can take away. And that’s why I want to be a lawyer.”
Needless to say, such monologues were cut when the movie was shown in the South. Despite strong reviews for his performance, Anderson never got another role with so much substance. But he continued working through the 1970s and died in 2011 at the age of 95.

Class S: Love letters
This is the Class S+ Cecil love letters!!
Please enjoy under the cut
TOKIYA ICHINOSE
From Riri:
Maybe it was his midnight-blue hair, or perhaps it was his ocean eyes, but the very moment I laid my eyes upon him my mind immediately thought, “Wow, he’s very good looking… charming... I really like his vibe.” That was the first reason why he piqued my interest, rather, the initial reason why I fancied him. My eyes were drawn to him and the fact that Kay bombarded me with a truckload of his pictures didn’t help at all, I just fell deeper into the hole. But as if that wasn’t enough, she started spamming me with utapri songs and I fell in love immediately. They are all such good singers but there’s one of them who sticks out to me the most, as expected, it’s Tokiya. His voice has this intricate and refined softness that seemed to caress my ears and touch my soul. He has such a sweet (and might I add a handsome) voice, kudos to Miyano Mamoru for that.
So I started watching the anime and through that, I got to know him better. At first, he seems cold with an air of loneliness and uneasiness dawning on him. But as the series progresses, I discovered that he’s a good-natured, warm, and dedicated person who loves singing and music with all his heart and all. He’s hardworking, dedicating everything to his craft. He has pride in it, so when he was told that his singing has no ‘heart’ it affected him a lot. That caused a lot of distress in his system, and the fact that his company is pushing him to pursue other things than being a singer added to that. His passion for his craft is burning, a fire that no one could put out. That’s one of the things that I love about him. He’s dedicated to everything he does. He’s a perfectionist but he’s also a caring person who cares a lot about the starish members. He’s genuinely a good person but that doesn’t mean he’s perfect. He strives for improvement and development all the time. He helps the members whenever they need. Most importantly, his attitude towards his passion is respectable and admirable.
I might’ve said a lot of things but I guess that only means I love a lot of things about him. He’s such a beautiful soul that inspires me to be more dedicated to my passion, to make my dreams come true no matter what it takes. His path towards his dream was rough, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows but that’s life, isn’t it? Despite that, he kept walking towards his dream. He’s admirable, respectable, and irresistibly loveable. That being said, I love all the things that made his character; that made Tokiya Ichinose be the kind of character that he is right now.
PS. Miyano Mamoru played a big part too. His insane talent gave life to Tokiya’s character.
From @poorlydrawnutapri:
When I first watched the Utapri anime like 6 years ago, having a best boy didn't cross my mind. At first, I was just most interested in Tokiya out of all the boys because I just thought he looked cool. I liked how mysterious he seemed and also, his hair, probably just because it was blue tbh. Either way, good design.
However, what really got me attached to him wasn't his looks. I then liked Tokiya's serious personality. I like how he starts off cold and stoic but how throughout the games and anime, he slowly softens up. I didn't just like his personality, I could also relate to his perfectionism and hard-working side, even when he exhausts himself, which is something I admit I also have. I continue to relate to him now after all this time, and that's why he's such a good character to me.
Besides that, his songs are nice to listen to and he has just a very pleasant voice. It's nice just to go listen to his voice after a long day. In a way, liking Tokiya also got me into the whole Utapri franchise: made some friends, made a couple of good memes, all that kinda stuff.
Also, I feel like it's a crime not to mention this so: he thicc. Like, dang, no wonder the guy only eats salads because all the fats he eats goes straight to that ass of his. (I am sorry that you had to read that.)
Overall, I just think he's neat. To me, he's relatable and has a nice character development. Tokiya is and will continue to be my best boy. :)
REN JINGUJI
From @incorrect-jinguji-ren:
Ren Jinguji, the 5th member of Starish is without any shame my favorite character of the Uta no prince sama series. Though often disregarded Ren is and always will be my most favorite and I firmly believe that he has one of the most, if not the most depth in his character. I love Ren a lot however because of his surface charismatic attitude he is usually labeled as a “playboy” or a “lothario”. This is not correct and it should never define him, as he actually is one of the most gentle and compassionate characters of the series. Ren has a very deep surface characterization and personality that is never usually recognized unless you truly take the time to understand WHY Ren acts the way he does, and WHY he makes the choices that he makes. My favorite part about loving characters is being able to accept them for their demons and embrace what others would see as the “imperfections” in them. That Is the best way to truly love them. I love Ren because of his motives, choices, and most of all his passionate loving heart. Although the pain he hides and the personality of who he really is, is hidden under a mask of charisma, he never loses himself deep within.
He’s misunderstood, but he’s beautiful. He’s so deep, from the everlasting devotion to loving his passed on mother, to always cherishing memories and the past bond he had with his childhood best friend Masato, to going against what his brother wants of him because he wants to fight to have a choice and to be passionate about something that he wants to love, because HE wants to love it. Ren didn’t have the love that a lot of people had at such a young age, he made a path for himself and along the way succumbed to the human faults that we all falter from within the hardest times in our life or even dicult events. He almost gave up, just as I know many of us had almost done before, as I know and can relate to, and still do now.
But he dusted himself o and picked up where he left o, making himself happy from once the feeling of being a hollow shell with no reason why he even existed to realizing that the most important thing in the world to him was cherishing the people who made him see the world in colors and seeking the choices that had been stripped from him at such a young age. He broke free from the chains of his family, his past, and his regrets to spread a beautiful pair of rose wings, his own wings to fly. And I hope he always flies. I will always love him, and wish nothing but the best for him whatever that be.
From @chips-and-vodka:
Ren Jinguji- the sexy, charming and flirty member of the STARISH boys. The youngest of the Jinguji family, a troubled child who grew up without a mother. A person who possesses many charms and is blessed with the gift of beauty. A red rose he was, beautiful yet his thorns are to be avoided. Beneath his passionate and seductive mannerisms there is a boy that craves genuine affection, from the one he truly adores and cherishes.
Ren Jinguji to me initially was one with a beautiful, attractive deep baritone, who is voiced by none other than the legend- Suwabe Junichi himself. The voice is an accurate fit of how this stereotype of a charming bishie should be, youthful and sensitive, and at times warm and seductive. His portrayal brings out the appeal of the character, the emotions and thoughts a troubled young adult such as the ‘useless third son’ lived through. Many would see him as a romantic one, one who showers those around him with attention and passion. Within however lives a rebellious soul who distrusts many, but still somehow desires that ray of sunshine that brightens his lonely soul.
Ren Jinguji is one that deserves real love, someone who appreciates him for who he is.
SYO KURUSU
From Jules:
Why do I like Syo, huh? Well, there are a lot of reasons! Some of them are more personal ones. First of all, Syo has always been my best boy, since UtaPri (the anime) exists. So ten long years now.
His fashion style is the first thing I noticed and it immediately intrigued me. I remember that my first thought, after seeing him in season one, was “Woah, he looks really cool!” even though Syo was just in his school uniform! I think what also made me interested in him was his energetic persona. The way he looked up to Ryuya Hyuga and wanted to follow in his footsteps was really sweet to me as well. Syo’s enthusiasm and positive attitude actually encouraged me to become stronger in a way too, if I’m being honest. I, personally, have always found his songs motivating and they made me feel better. I really came to love Syo in his episode in season one. When he talked about his childhood and how weak he was, I really felt with him. From that moment on I cheered him on and Syo definitely became my favorite character. My interest never wavered over the next seasons either.
I also have personal reasons why I love him so much. I just feel very connected and relate to him a lot, y’know? We have quite a few things in common. Syo and I have the same eye color, we have both played the violin since we were little, and were born weak and with pretty much the same health and heart issues. I like to say that Syo “saved” me, which is true. There is also the fact that the blonde and I are both on the shorter side (and regularly get teased for it), too! Though, I’m even a little shorter than him.
But to be more positive again, there is just so much more to him than meets the eye at first! Syo is more than just the stereotypical short sporty character. He really cares for his friends and wants the best for them. Syo’s friendship with every STARISH member is different but still close. He’s also protective of the ones around him. Syo really cares about his little twin brother too, which can be seen in the games and the few times he talked about him in the anime. Syo’s big heart easily balances out his, sometimes, tsundere behavior and I love him for that. This blonde idol is just a great guy and deserves all the love he’s getting and more.
Seriously, stan Syo Kurusu, guys!
From Vic:
Syo Kurusu is my favourite idol within the utapri games and any other form of media pertaining to the franchise. He is my favourite idol because of several factors, one of which being that his voice actor is Hiro Shimono, who voices Zenitsu from Demon slayer and Lucifer from “Devil is a part timer”. Syo is a very outgoing character and is talented in many aspects athletically. Born with a heart disease, he continues to persevere throughout the myriads of life’s problems in front of him.
He’s extremely outgoing and is proficient in the martial art of Karate and desires to strengthen his body more than what it is currently. He is best friends with Natsuki and can communicate with each other proficiently. Syo is my favourite character within the franchise because of his resolve, perseverance and great chemistry with Natsuki and his teammates. Hiro Shimono did the character justice by making his voice one of young, adventurous and energetic. With that said, Syo is a character I truly enjoy within the franchise and wish to see more of him.
CECIL AIJIMA
From Anon:
Greetings, princes and princesses, and welcome to a world of princes, questionably talking cats, and magic! I’m of course talking about Cecil Aijima, our foreign prince of UtaPri! So, why do I like Cecil Aijima? It’s borderline ridiculous, but it’s because of Cecil’s birthday. More specifically, Cecil’s Birthday Cruise card. But, I should start at the beginning.
Back when I first watched the anime, I thought Cecil was a little bit of a brat towards literally everyone, and one of my least favorites at the time. After watching through the rest of the anime though, I started to like him a lot more than I did before. To me, he had matured a lot after season 2, and never turned back to that bratty self. And so, when playing SL, he might not have been my favorite, but I didn’t hate him. Then, that one fateful day, I decided to pull in his birthday gacha. To my surprise, I had gotten the card in my first pull! Then the story dragged me into the Cecil Appreciation Group. I thought the story was incredibly cute. Then I got more Cecil cards so I could read more stories. Then the cycle repeated itself again. And now, well, if I’m writing this, I think you know what happened to me afterwards. I’ll be here, doing my best for him.
From Eden:
The boy with childish like demeanor but continues to have a heart of gold for his friends and wonderful composer.
I remember first watching Utapri in middle school and questioning. "Well shit- this is my life now..." and I didn't really have a favorite character at the time. I was always bouncing between characters like Syo, Otoya, even the teachers. However it was season 2 that made me realize who my true favorite was. Despite his at first cocky nature when he was first introduced, Cecil to me was amazing! His singing was magical, his origins even more fascinating. You wouldn't think Utapri would turn that down the magic route but it somehow did.
As the seasons went on, and as I got more into the series, he just became more of a love to me. His kindness and child-like nature and curiosity, he felt different than the other characters.
I love the other characters, yes but him?
Something about him just felt right! He not only seems to be a protector for those he cares about but also feels like he would be the best person to be around. Always wanting to do anything new and exciting just to peak his curiosity and to learn more. Ever since then, he has always been my favorite. The one and only Annapolis Prince, Aijima Cecil.

THANK YOU ASH MUAH MUAH I AM SO LOVE WITH THESE COLORFUL LITTLE MEN
🍳 How long have you been in the fandom?
I was exposed to it in early 2019 but then got into the fandom officially in September 2019!
😇 Who’s your best boy & what drew you to him?
SIGH……Natsuki and Satsuki, of course—both of them 50/50 😩
I was attracted to Natsuki’s cheerful, innocent attitude and how affectionate he was. At the very beginning, I was very smitten with how openly adoring he was about anything he liked.
With Satsuki, I was taken by his bad boy attitude and go-getter spirit….He was hot from the moment we met and I wanted him to be mine.
💞 Has your current favourite always been your favourite? If not, who was first?
NOPE LOL My very very very first favorite was Reiji, then Syo, then Natsuki.
🎀 Favourite Shining Live card?
Tumblr media
💭 Interaction you’d like to see between characters?
PLEASE. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD. GIVE ME MORE REN AND TOKIYA. I NEED THE ROSE BROS, I NEED THEM. AND SATSUKI WITH CECIL OR JUST WITH ANYONE FOR THAT MATTER.
👀 Do you own any merchandise?
I don’t have any pics with me but I own a bunch of Natsuki buttons, a handful of his Kotobukiya chibis, his White Day and childhood memories CD, his Prince Cat, and some rare Satsuki keychains :) I also have a few fan merch from Etsy!
🎶 What’s your favourite song overall?
GOD……YOU CANT DO THIS TO ME. BUT…..I gotta go with……Killer Kiss……I literally cannot get tired of it ever.
🌻 Something about the series that makes you smile?
I love the consistency and dedication given to every character (tho Heavens could really use some more attention) Everyone gets the same amount of merch, SL content, etc. It really is the fans who decided who’s popular because the companies don’t show much bias for who’s in the spotlight.
