given the Discourse, i couldn't not post this article.
Extremism experts and LGBTQ advocates warned that removing merchandise could be seen as a success by anti-LGBTQ extremists and violent protesters which could lead to copycat behavior threatening the already marginalized community. "I think this will embolden alt-right actors, who now are going to believe that with social media campaigns and targeted actions against retailers that they can proceed in limiting visibility of LGBTQ people," said Sophie Bjork-James, a professor at Vanderbilt University, who researches the white nationalist movement, in an interview.
"Target's giving into this," said Victor Asal, a professor at Albany and extremism researcher. "Other extremists will say 'hey, that's a great idea. We should do that.'"
Michael Edison Hayden, a senior investigative reporter at the Southern Poverty Law Center, believes extremists are making calculated efforts to redefine LGBTQ+ Pride as a "toxic" or dangerous thing.
Bomb threats, he said, are intended to scare the community and supporters into silence. National LGBTQ+ organizations, including Family Equality, GLAAD, GLSEN, The Human Rights Campaign, and more are calling on Target and all businesses to stand up against anti-LGBTQ+ extremism. "When values of diversity, equity and inclusion are tested, business must defend them unequivocally," the organizations said in a joint statement.

how do you reconcile being a feminist, single, and a high-value woman? maybe I'm misunderstanding the concept but I always thought HVW and hypergamy were all very centered on seeking a male partner.
Hi love! Great question. I think your curiosity offers a great opportunity to dive a bit more into my personal views and philosophy.
I believe that the goal of feminism is to protect all women and provide them legal protection, structural resources, and social power to live equitably in society. In my eyes, a high-value woman is one who is unapologetically self-respecting and sets her life up in a way to allows her to work towards goals that meet her needs in all areas of life.
Hypergamy, by its modern definition, is the idea that women "date up" to intertwine their sexual relationships with men to those who offer more or equally high social, financial, or sexual capital to them. The traditional idea of hypergamy was exclusively referred to as "marrying up" as marriage was the only way women could achieve most resources (like a bank account, credit card, housing, and certain medical care – it's so terrifying, honestly).
In the latter case, hypergamy is nearly synonymous with centralizing men. Before women gained certain freedoms (in the U.S. this was mostly in the 1960-70s), centralizing men was a survival mechanism, not a preference or act of self-imposed oppression.
I believe in the modern world where women can have their own bank accounts, careers, and access to birth control (the latter one is an anxiety-inducing topic at this point in time, ugh), women are given the choice to be hypergamous either while centralizing or decentralizing men.
I believe that you can uphold hypergamous standards in your dating life without centralizing men in your life. For me, personally, my relationship or dating status has no bearing on how happy or successful I am in my life. No man (or lack of one in my life) will ever determine my self-worth or reflect my progress in life. My metrics of fulfillment and accomplishment stem from thriving in my professional life, staying in good health, practicing consistently healthy habits (WFPB diet, regular exercise, mental health hygiene, sexual wellness, mindfulness, self-care, etc.), and maintaining nourishing friendships. Dating and my interactions with men (in non-platonic ways) are fun ways I enrich my life, so I believe this mentality embodies the modern – albeit hyper-progressive – definition of hypergamy. Remaining single allows me to enjoy all of the ways men can uplevel my life – socially, financially (to the degree some nighttime activities, such as dinners, drinks, car services, club fees, etc. are paid for – no sugaring activities or anything), and sexually without the aspects of dating men that would contradict my sense of self-respect or autonomy. I'm not personally designed to be a man's therapist or feel like I should have to include a man's needs in all of my life or day-to-day decisions because we're sexually involved with each other. I have a strict vetting process regarding who I will entertain in my dating/sexual life to ensure they're adding value to my life and there's mutual compatibility considering the type of arrangement we're both seeking.
Personally, I believe the only way to maintain equity in dating is to remain single, which allows me to meet all of my other standards in life. I will never sacrifice my life goals for a man, but I do not believe that means you have to approach dating or sexual relationships from a black-and-white perspective. However, if I'm going to date men (which can be a headache for certain), I believe they need to enrich my life in some way – whether that's interesting conversations, gaining business acumen, social relationships, fun sexual experiences, or just learning about different cultures/world perspectives.
From my observations, women who use hypergamy as an excuse to centralize their life or aspirations around a man are glamorizing regressive/oppressive ideologies (like submitting to a partner or relying on men financially) as a last attempt to uphold the patriarchy as women wake up to the fact that having to do all of society's emotional labor plus having to contort ourselves in a world designed for men, namely in our professional lives, is not the truest form of feminism out there (not to mention it's lack of intersectionality, but that's a whole other rant lol). I don't use the "hypergamy" tag on my posts anymore for this reason, though. I believe that many people are conflating the textbook concept of hypergamy with regressive political agendas, which I will never promote let alone subscribe to.
This is all just my take, so I hope it all makes sense and resonates with some members of this amazing community. Every woman should figure out what approaches to all of these matters would make her the most genuinely happy and fulfilled regardless of society's expectations or cultural norms.
Sending love xx

One key takeaway is the enduring power of iconic brands like Budweiser and Bud Light, which have maintained their strong positions in the market over several decades. This highlights the importance of consistent brand messaging, effective marketing strategies, and brand equity in fostering consumer loyalty and driving sales. Additionally, the case underscores the significance of brand differentiation and innovation in a highly competitive market, as evidenced by the success of brands like Corona Extra and Heineken in the imported beer segment. Corona's success in this regard was particularly notable, as it effectively leveraged storytelling to create a compelling brand narrative centered around relaxation, escape, and the beach lifestyle.
By associating its brand with imagery of sandy shores, clear blue waters, and carefree moments, Corona tapped into consumers' desires for leisure and freedom, effectively positioning itself as more than just a beverage but as an experience. By transporting consumers mentally to idyllic beach settings, Corona fostered positive associations with its brand, reinforcing its image as a refreshing and enjoyable choice for leisure moments. This approach indicated the importance of experiential branding in creating memorable brand interactions and fostering brand loyalty. #MITSloanBranding2024B

So, since Unity is attempting to really wind down the news story I would at least like to give some kind of update and make my thoughts known on the response before we all move onto the next thing. This is less of a compilation of information like the last post and more me just giving a take.
That being said, if you weren't aware, since the big backlash against the predatory practices, Unity has apologized and backpedaled, attempting to assuage the worries of independent developers while keeping the potential for charging large budget massive success games somewhere down the line.
Our Unity Personal plan will remain free and there will be no Runtime Fee for games built on Unity Personal. We will be increasing the cap from $100,000 to $200,000 and we will remove the requirement to use the Made with Unity splash screen.
The Runtime Fee policy will only apply beginning with the next LTS version of Unity shipping in 2024 and beyond. Your games that are currently shipped and the projects you are currently working on will not be included – unless you choose to upgrade them to this new version of Unity.
We will make sure that you can stay on the terms applicable for the version of Unity editor you are using – as long as you keep using that version.
For games that are subject to the runtime fee, we are giving you a choice of either a 2.5% revenue share or the calculated amount based on the number of new people engaging with your game each month. Both of these numbers are self-reported from data you already have available. You will always be billed the lesser amount.
Furthermore, the CEO who was the center of all this controversy, John Riccitiello, announced that he would be leaving the company.
Now... I consider this to be a bit of a smokescreen. Not only by the fact that he will, almost assuredly, pull dozens of more millions of dollars from the company on his way out (we don't know the details on this quite yet but the ways that these things tend to work and his history with Unity the corporation speak volumes to it being all but guaranteed), but also, I don't know if he was the only problem.
Not to say he wasn't a problem and any company wouldn't be better off without him in it, he is, as the posts notes, historically, publicly, professionally, an asshole. But I think a mistake I made in that post, and a mistake many people are making with this story, is overemphasizing Riccitiello's role in all this. Yes, he has a history of saying horrendous, anti-consumer bullshit, but putting all the blame on him gives the other Unity executives a scapegoat, when they have drained this company as much, if not more, than Riccitiello, with nothing to suggest they aren't as corrupt, incompetent, and anti-consumer as he is.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: a chart titled Summary Compensation Table which lists the gross and total compensations (of salaries, bonuses, stocks, options, non-equity incentives, and others) of Unity's top 5 highest paid executives for the fiscal year of 2022. John Riccitiello's (President & CEO) total compensation in 2020 was 22 million, in 2021 was 12.5 million, in 2022 was 11.8 million. Luis Visosa's (Executive VP & CFO) total compensation in 2021 was 41.5 million, in 2022 was 19.3 million. Carol Carpenter's (Senior VP & Chief Marketing Officer) total compensation in 2022 was 32 million. Anirma Gupta's (Senior VP, General Counsel, & Corp. Secretary) total compensation in 2022 was 19.4 million. Marc Whitten's (President of Create Solutions & the person who apologized in that public notice) total compensation in 2021 was 31.6 million and in 2022 was 16.2 million. End Description]
There is literally nothing to suggest that the pricing change was entirely Riccitiello's idea and the rest of these executives were against it, just as I'm sure it wasn't just him who fired 8% of Unity's employees and closed half of their locations just this year while maintaining these insanely high levels of compensation. Unfortunately, I think corruption just kinda permeates the topmost level of this company, as the executives have and will continue through Riccitiello's departure to milk this company dry while providing literally nothing for its growth or continued profitability. And this is not a problem in just Unity. Our current economy has seen the position of CEO and executive leadership become less about actual leadership or economic strategy, but as a status symbol and a source of wealth, continuously providing less and taking more, while staking claim to its successes while failure is usually blamed on the market. Very much a snake eating its own tail, the wealthy and important people are wealthy and important because they're wealthy and important.
But I won't go into it any more than that. I just wanted to get this out there to say that, I still don't trust this company anymore. I don't think this is going to turn around the developers who flocked to leave, nor do I think it should, and if you are considering whether or not to return to Unity, I would suggest not.
Personally, for my current project I've switched over to GameMaker Studio, which is also free to download for personal use, though it's limited to 2D games and I cannot vouch for it wholly since I've only just started using it. And, as a general statement and relating to the rant I just went on, while Unity was outed for this anti-consumer incompetence and maliciousness, the same people exist in a number of different companies and it's not always easy to know who's going to be next or who you can give even a basic level of professional trust to.

Almost four years ago, I discovered a potential path for change. I was invited to participate in an initiative called “Black Women Thriving East of the River.” This initiative sought to engage women from Wards 7 and 8 in brainstorming, creating, and implementing interventions to foster an environment where more women from our community could secure quality employment and effectively combat cancer. On a crisp autumn morning, November 22, 2019, I joined a diverse group of 28 women who gathered at Building Bridges Across the River, formerly known as THEARC, on Mississippi Avenue SE. We shared our life experiences, challenges, aspirations, and dreams. Our backgrounds and expertise spanned health care, community service, education, workforce development, and numerous other fields. We were doctors, nonprofit leaders, community activists, and much more. We were also mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, and neighbors. Over nearly two years, we convened for numerous meetings.
I came to the District from South Carolina to attend Howard University.  After college in 2001, I moved to Ward 8.  I established a family in the District and moved to Ward 7 in 2018. My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 and died in 2020.  My motivation for the initiative stemmed from my mother’s battle with breast cancer. I hoped to uncover ways to improve her life and the lives of others like her.
What I experienced, surrounded by fellow Black women, was both profound and unique. While I had crossed paths with some of these women in the community before, this initiative allowed me to hear their stories and narratives that shared their pain, struggles, and moments of happiness. As someone working in the health field, managing a public health research firm, addressing health disparities was not new to me. However, what made this initiative different was the fact that it was coordinated by the Jane Bancroft Robinson Foundation (JBRF), and participants were compensated for their time. This was incredible and played a crucial role in building trust. For far too long, organizations had come to our community, extracting our knowledge and experiences but often failing to deliver effective solutions.
The Black Women Thriving East of the River initiative valued us, and our opinions were genuinely respected. It was a defining moment for many of us.
This initiative offered an opportunity to bring about tangible changes within the health care system, enabling mothers and families in Wards 7 and 8 to survive and thrive. It also presented an opportunity to guide women toward quality employment and successful careers.
We mobilized to dismantle inequitable systems by convening community leaders and those most affected in our neighborhoods. Through our initiative, we devised specific, actionable interventions to address the root causes of the barriers we faced. We formed workgroups to better understand challenges related to employment, economic mobility, and cancer-related illnesses and deaths. We charted paths toward solutions.
Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, we continued our work through in-person and online meetings. Our workgroups met at various locations, including the R.I.S.E. Demonstration Center and the Anacostia Community Museum. From the outset, this endeavor harnessed the skills, resources, and talents of the exceptional individuals east of the river, from our consultants and vendors to catering chefs and meeting facilitators.
Ultimately, we created roadmaps for change, which involved analyzing the root causes of our problems, creating journey maps, prioritizing themes, designing interventions, conducting racial equity impact assessments, and engaging with stakeholders. At each step, our lived experiences guided our decision-making, and our stories as Black women with close ties to east of the river communities were integrated and prioritized.
Witnessing how our work has transformed into tangible action is incredibly gratifying.
This year, Nakeisha Neal Jones assumed the role of executive director of Black Women Thriving East of the River and began implementing the interventions. A Washington native who grew up in Wards 7 and 8, Jones is a collaborative leader with over 20 years of experience expanding access to education, workforce development, and housing resources for underrepresented families and youth. The initiative is gaining momentum, with JBRF pledging over $3 million in support and a $1 million grant from the Greater Washington Community Foundation’s Health Equity Fund.
For example, a scholarship fund for Black women has raised more than $300,000. These funds will be disbursed to women pursuing careers in health-related fields and other areas. A wide range of applicants will be considered, including those seeking licensing, stackable credentials, or professional certificates in medical transcription, community health, or as birth doulas. Also eligible are those pursuing post-secondary degrees in nursing, dentistry, medical research, physical therapy, and future doctors, surgeons, and dentists. Scholarship recipients will receive comprehensive case management support and be eligible for discretionary grant funds to address any obstacles to their success, such as child care, transportation, or program-related expenses like laptops or specialized software.
Additionally, a health careers resource map is in development, featuring an informative website to support women pursuing careers in health-related fields and beyond. The website will offer comprehensive career information, including training and support for various positions and career paths. Neal Jones is also collaborating with health care facility HR departments to understand their current and future staffing needs, creating a pipeline to guide Black women from east of the river toward these positions. Furthermore, they are developing a Cancer Patient Bill of Rights to remind women of their rights when navigating cancer.
Over time, additional components will be implemented, including programs to identify apprenticeship opportunities, an employer training series, cancer landscape analysis, cancer navigation training, cancer clinical trials training, anti-misogynoir training, a cancer Data Infrastructure Task Force, and more.
For women east of the river, change is finally within reach.

University of Houston leaders announced this week they would close the school's Diversity and Inclusion office and LGBTQ Resource Center on Aug.31 in light of recent legislation passed to erode diversity programs and services in the state. Instead, UH is creating a Center for Student Advocacy and Community to comply with state law. The university's announcement comes months before the state law is set to go into effect on Jan.1.
Filed as SB 17, the law bans diversity, equity, and inclusion offices in higher education institutions and prohibits departments from implementing mandatory training that includes content or programs referencing race, color, ethnicity, gender identity or sexual orientation. The law passed earlier this summer in the 88th legislative session and was signed by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in June.
With its Center for Student Advocacy and Community, the University of Houston is set to become one of the first Texas higher education institutions to make swift changes ahead of the law's effectiveness. Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Daniel M. Maxwell released an email statement to UH community members on Wednesday saying the new on-campus center will be open for all students regardless of race, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
"In preparation of this law going into effect, student affairs staff and administrators began working this summer in consultation with other departments and offices across campus to ensure that our programs, activities, and services satisfy the requirements of SB17," Maxwell said.

"In preparation of this law going into effect, student affairs staff and administrators began working this summer in consultation with other departments and offices across campus to ensure that our programs, activities, and services satisfy the requirements of SB17," Maxwell said.
"This center will make available wide-ranging advocacy, a support network for both undergraduate and graduate students, comprehensive basic needs services and resources, and facilitate a variety of events and programs to foster student success, achievement, and community building."
According to Maxwell, the center will specifically focus on academic access, leadership development, summer bridge programs, student success coaching, and various mentorship programs. The university released a draft policy on DEI initiatives and frequently asked questions about the law. The UH community is encouraged to give feedback on the plan and is open to input until Sept.20.
"They will be signed and finalized by University leadership shortly after the community review concludes," UH Senior Director of Media Relations Chris Stipes said in a statement to Chron.
In a meeting with the UH System Board of Regents, Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and General Counsel Dona Cornell explained to board members what they are permitted to do or say under the law. According to Cornell, state leadership would audit higher education institutions every four years to ensure they comply with SB17, and the UH system itself would conduct its own self-auditing process.
"You can't say, for example, 'commitment to diversity' in hiring," Cornell said. A few exceptions to the bill include academic course instruction, guest speakers, data collection, student recruitment or admissions, scholarly research, and more. Overall, Cornell described the law as "broad."
"It is a very emotional issue for a lot of people, and I recognize that, so we really tried to work with each constituency, if you will, across the system," Cornell said. "There are some things that we will no longer be doing, but the large majority of the programming that we provide and the activities that we have will continue."

Nurturing Ethical Values: Family Relationships, Sexual Ethics, and Respect for Dignity, Life, and Freedom
INTRODUCTION As you embark on the journey of adolescence, it is important to build a strong ethical foundation. This essay aims to guide you on the ethics of family relationships, sexual ethics, and respecting the dignity, life, and freedom of others. By exploring the topics and drawing inspiration from insightful documentaries like "Childhood 2.0" and "What is a Woman?" we will explore valuable lessons that will help shape responsible and compassionate individuals who contribute positively to their families and society as a whole.
ETHICS OF FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS: Families are crucial social structures where people learn about love, support, and responsibility. In healthy families, parents and kids have a close relationship and show each other love and support. Every member of the family plays a role according to their capabilities and obtains what they need, not as business partners do but due to mutual love. It's all about freely giving and caring for one another. Successful families teach us how to build positive bonds with people outside of our own family. They teach us the values of decency, equity, and love. In "Childhood 2.0," the film emphasizes the value of honest dialogue and mutual respect in families. Families that communicate effectively tend to have happier kids and healthier relationships. In the documentary, examples of families with open communication and mutual respect were given. It explains to us that when families establish a secure setting for sharing feelings and working out problems, it strengthens their bond. Open lines of communication foster trust, which supports family development and interdependence. In the intriguing and enlightening documentary "Childhood 2.0," we are granted a glimpse into the immense responsibilities shouldered by parents. They embody boundless affection, unwavering care, and relentless support for their children, cultivating a safe and nurturing haven. Actively engaged in their children's education, each parent assumes a distinct role, with mothers often providing tender guidance while fathers embrace the challenges. They establish boundaries, obligations, and principles that instill discipline, accountability, and profound respect. However, parents recognize the significance of seeking supplementary support from social institutions such as childcare centers, schools, and religious organizations to fulfill their children's needs comprehensively. Nevertheless, parents retain their authority, making autonomous decisions rather than solely relying on societal influences. Within the family unit, the unique contributions of each member are cherished and celebrated, fostering a profound sense of respect, admiration, and harmonious growth. It is through their devoted efforts that parents lay the foundation for their children's overall well-being and development. Nevertheless, while fulfilling their responsibilities, parents should ensure that they act with fairness. They should ensure that choices regarding their children are made considering their well-being rather than their selfish desires. Parents' wants must be balanced with fairness and genuine educational assistance to establish strong parent-child interactions. Children also have responsibilities toward their parents. As depicted in "Childhood 2.0," showing respect and gratitude for their parents' sacrifices, guidance, and love is crucial. Also, they should respect their parents' authority on certain issues. Mostly in cases where the child cannot make a sound decision themselves and in cases where it affects the entire family.
SEXUAL ETHICS:
As you progress through adolescence, your body undergoes a series of transformations, encompassing both physical and hormonal changes. These changes can engender sensations of sexual attraction and desire within you. Such desire may manifest as thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations, emerging when you find someone appealing and experience romantic or sexual interest in them. It is crucial to recognize that these feelings are a customary part of adolescent development as your body and mind explore the complexities of human sexuality. It is noteworthy that, alongside the potential for pleasure and the creation of new life, the pursuit of sexual activities solely for hedonistic pleasure can yield adverse consequences. Analogous to someone who solely seeks gastronomic gratification finding it challenging to derive enjoyment from a meal once eating becomes habitual, an individual who engages in a sexual activity purely for the sake of pleasure may struggle to access the intimacy and emotional closeness that typically accompany such acts. This bears significance because, in instances where these feelings intensify and become frequent, they are often experienced not as an endless source of pleasure or joy but rather as a limitation on personal freedom. To mitigate such challenges, it becomes imperative to appreciate the virtue of chastity. Chastity involves valuing and embracing self-control, temperance, and a mindful approach to sexual desires. By cultivating the virtue of chastity, you not only enhance your freedom to make the right choices regarding sexual issues, but you can also develop a healthy perspective on sexuality that prioritizes respect, emotional connection, and meaningful relationships. Understanding the significance of balancing pleasure and intimacy can contribute to a more fulfilling and harmonious experience of your sexual development. A significant example of chastity helping to develop relationships is seen in marital relations. Chastity within marriage can be seen as maintaining fidelity and remaining committed to one's spouse while refraining from seeking sexual fulfillment outside the marriage. It involves mutual respect, trust, and the cultivation of emotional and physical intimacy within the marital relationship. With this, some advantages of chastity can be highlighted. By choosing to reserve sexual intimacy exclusively for each other within the marital relationship, both individuals demonstrate their commitment and loyalty to one another. By maintaining self-control and abstaining from sexual activity outside of marriage, couples can approach their sexual relationship with a sense of reverence, exclusivity, and intentional focus. Chastity also encourages effective communication and understanding between spouses. By choosing to remain faithful and dedicated to one another, couples prioritize the well-being of their relationship over fleeting moments of pleasure or outside temptations. This commitment creates a sense of security, unity, and shared purpose, allowing the marriage to thrive and endure challenges over time.
RESPECT FOR DIGNITY, LIFE, AND FREEDOM OF OTHERS: The dignity of a human person refers to the intrinsic worth that every human has that separates them from everything in the world. It serves as the basis for human rights laws around the world. It dictates that every human being possesses a value inherent to their nature as human beings and that they be treated in a manner befitting that value. Understanding this, as adolescents, we should ensure to treat everyone around us with dignity regardless of their age, race, status, gender, and so on. Furthermore, we should also ensure that our definition of self-worth is engineered toward the knowledge and recognition of our dignity as humans. An example of this is derived from the documentary "Childhood 2.0," where adolescents, devoid of knowledge and recognition of their intrinsic worth as human beings, let their worth be reduced to the number of likes or views they get on their social media pages. This notion of worth is wrong. A person's worth is not determined by something as meager as likes or views but is instead an inherent attribute that is possessed by being a human person. A consequence of the dignity of the human person is the value of human life. Human life is a precious and unique existence that holds immense value and significance. It encompasses the emotional, intellectual, and physical experiences that make up a person's identity and relationship. As a consequence of human dignity, it follows that human life should be respected. Respect for human life entails recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of every individual, irrespective of age, gender, race, or any other characteristic. It involves upholding ethical principles to ensure the well-being and flourishing of everyone in society. This can be better explained as avoiding and discouraging any act that serves as a threat to human life. That is, all forms of violence, abuse, discrimination, or neglect should be discouraged. Another consequence of human dignity is freedom. Respect for the freedom of others is respect for their autonomy, that is, their quality of being able to make decisions that affect them and their fulfillment. In discussing respect for the freedom of others, we take note of the term 'paternalism,' which is the doctrine that denies this duty to respect other people's right to make their own choices and insists that we have to get them to act in the ways that we judge are in their best interests. This type of doctrine appeals to a consequentialist view and is self-defeating, as there is great potential for self-deception when acting paternalistically. It is also important to note that when others decide on my behalf without taking my views into account, even if they act "for my good", they deprive me of an essential part of "my good": the opportunity to develop my capacity for making responsible decisions and, ultimately, of truly being the author of my own life; in this sense, they deprive me of an essential means for my self-fulfillment. This means that for the attainment of our fulfillment, we should avoid taking or being victims of paternalistic actions.
CONCLUSION: By embracing ethical principles within family relationships, sexual ethics, and respect for the dignity, life, and freedom of others, young individuals aged 13–15 can contribute to a more compassionate and just society. The documentaries "Childhood 2.0" and "What is a Woman?" serve as valuable references, emphasizing the importance of open communication, understanding, and mutual respect within families. Exploring sexual ethics helps adolescents make informed choices and build healthy relationships. Recognizing the inherent dignity of every individual and actively promoting life, well-being, and social justice create a foundation for a more inclusive and harmonious world.

Columbia University Irving Medical Center: A Systemic Response to Systemic Racism
Columbia University Irving Medical Center: A Systemic Response to Systemic Racism.
The death of George Floyd at the hands of police—combined with the disparities highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic—spurred a racial awakening across the United States in 2020. The flurry of activity that started then at VP&S has not abated. VP&S students, faculty, and staff have initiated more than a dozen efforts to chip away at the massive undertaking of dismantling the effects of systemic racism in medical education.
Maya Jalbout Hastie, MD, associate professor of anesthesiology, and her fellow faculty in anesthesiology developed virtual improvisation sessions—inspired by true events—to help department members handle racist microaggressions in the workplace. Devon Rupley, MD, assistant professor of obstetrics & gynecology, along with two medical students, Stephanie Granada'21 and Cibel Quinteros-Baumgart'22, conducted one of the first studies to understand the birthing experiences of Spanish speakers during the early days of the pandemic in New York City. And medical student Jeremiah Douchee joined the Columbia chapter of White Coats for Black Lives, an organization run by medical trainees that aims to end racism and systems of oppression in health care.
Despite these efforts by members of the VP&S community, racism remains a systemic problem and demands a systemic solution. So in October 2021—as VP&S welcomed its most diverse medical student class in history—Hastie, Rupley, Douchee, and a dozen other stakeholders joined forces to form the executive coalition of the school's Anti-Racist Transformation (ART) in Medical Education project, perhaps the most comprehensive effort yet to undo systems of racism and bias in education at VP&S.
"Gathering a group of individuals across the workplace spectrum has been instructive on what it means to be inclusive," says Monica L. Lypson, MD, vice dean for education. "Having students, staff, and faculty working in collaborative fashion to create an anti-racist educational environment is key to future success."
Creating an anti-racist strategy
ART in Medical Education is a framework developed by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai that brings a three-year, systemic approach to the effort, charging medical schools with creating a transformative, ongoing anti-racist strategy. (As opposed to being passively "not racist," the term "anti-racist" refers to taking an active approach in countering systems of racial prejudice.) By participating in the project's inaugural cohort of 11 schools in the United States and Canada, VP&S is building on the efforts of its anti-racism task force, which called for advances in curriculum, admissions, student support, and the learning environment.
The ART in Medical Education executive coalition at VP&S is led by Jean-Marie Alves-Bradford, MD, associate professor of psychiatry and inaugural director of the Department of Psychiatry's Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and Hetty Cunningham, MD, associate professor of pediatrics and director of equity and justice in curricular affairs at VP&S. The ART project continues the work they did together to develop workshops for medical students processing racial trauma.
"It does really help to be a part of this team effort," says Alves-Bradford. "We're all coming from different disciplines, but with some similar experiences in those disciplines. Working together toward change, regardless of our area of expertise or particular focus, is not just bonding, it's motivating and strengthening and reinforcing that commitment."
When the project officially launched in October 2021, Cunningham says, the VP&S executive coalition began mapping out the disparate anti-racism efforts already taking place at Columbia to build a roadmap for organizational change. "What are the priorities of the institution that are documented, that have been expressed, that have been accepted? How can we work with those? Who are the main allies in this work? Who needs to be included? The idea is to come together and create a cohesive movement."
Guided by those findings, the coalition narrowed its focus to three core areas: curriculum, faculty retention, and integrated care.
Addressing the learning environment
To address curriculum, the executive coalition developed anti-racist learning objectives using a framework drafted by the Association of American Medical Colleges. The objectives aim to help students and faculty understand the term "anti-racist," says Alves-Bradford, and to define and operationalize what it means to create an anti-racist learning environment and health care system. Some of the objectives focus broadly on systems and practices, she says, while others drill down into specifics, such as how the medical school approaches basic sciences.
"We think about how the objectives would evolve over time throughout the curriculum," says Alves-Bradford, "to get deeper and more complex as students go from preclinical to clinical."
The learning objectives include understanding how a physician's personal biases and lived experience can influence clinical decision-making—and their interactions with patients, patients' families, and other members of the care team—and learning how to mitigate the effects of those biases. Another key element involves studying how societal structures might have played a role in a patient's health care experience. For instance, a person might have an increased risk of diabetes and heart disease if they live in a neighborhood that lacks access to affordable, healthy food. "Bias can creep in in lots of different ways," Alves-Bradford says, "even when we think it's far removed from the actual individual patient."
It's important to include anti-racist learning objectives as part of the curriculum, Cunningham says, because it means those skills will be formally assessed. "If something isn't assessed, then it's not taken seriously," Cunningham says. "We want our students to be able to be active in the space of anti-racism. Not only will they have the knowledge, but they'll know how to advocate for changes in medicine. The faculty are in agreement that that's something we want our students to be able to do, so we have to shift the curriculum."
Work toward an anti-racist medical education system also has implications for recruitment and retention, Alves-Bradford says. As workers nationwide reconsider their professional aspirations and work-life balance in wake of the pandemic, she notes, now is the time to consider systemwide structures that would help VP&S recruit and promote the best faculty, staff, and students.
Segregated care
Finally, while the idea of segregated health care might seem like a relic of the past, Alves-Bradford says a patient's health insurance coverage often dictates whether that person is treated at a faculty practice or a public clinic. Different providers work in these separate settings, and the differences don't end there. Faculty practices and public clinics have disparate resources, she notes, from technology to staffing ratios and even the ambiance of the setting in which patients receive care.
The Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at VP&S hosted a symposium in May on segregated health care. The center's director, Lydia S. Dugdale, MD, the Dorothy L. and Daniel H. Silberberg Associate Professor of Medicine at VP&S, gave the opening remarks. After public health experts outlined the history and policy that shapes how people receive care, a panel of physicians discussed ongoing efforts to desegregate care. Panelists included Julia E. Iyasere, MD, assistant professor of medicine and executive director of the Dalio Center for Health Justice at NewYork-Presbyterian. Kamini Doobay, MD, assistant professor of emergency medicine, closed the event by providing the attendees with ways to advocate for individual patients and for systemic changes.
The ART in Medical Education coalition at VP&S plans to use its platform to publicize the issue and educate the Columbia community about segregated care. "What are some of the pitfalls when things are structured in that way?" Alves-Bradford asks. "What is the context? How did those systems evolve to be that way? There were regulations that led it to be one way or another: How does that happen?"
The coalition has joined ongoing efforts, including White Coats for Black Lives and the NYC Coalition to Dismantle Racism in the Health System, to push for an end to this divided system. "We're advocating for not having those systems segregated," says Alves-Bradford, "to integrate and have people seen in similar settings, regardless of their insurance or payment."
Beyond their work on curriculum, faculty retention, and integrated care, the VP&S coalition is considering ways to support and recognize students involved in anti-racism work. Also on the horizon: involving more participants from the greater VP&S community and the city at large.
As the ART in Medical Education project enters its second year, the VP&S coalition and the rest of the inaugural cohort of schools are moving into the next phase of the project: implementing and sustaining change at their various institutions. While each of the 11 medical schools aims to embed change, learn from feedback, and course correct to develop transformative, ongoing anti-racism strategy, the cohort also plans to come together to learn from each other.
"The cohort allows us to partner with institutions around the country that are doing very exciting things," Cunningham says, "We're sharing our challenges and solutions. That allows us all to move forward more quickly and adopt best practices."

Readerly Exploration #2
Due Jan 30th
Based on your successes and struggles reading this text, write down two or three goals for yourself as a reader for your next reading assignment.
Tompkins Chapter 1 “Becoming an Effective Literacy Teacher”
Tompkins, G. E., Smith, C., Campbell, R., & Green, D. (2019). Chapter 1. In Literacy for the 21st Century: A Balanced Approach (7th ed., pp. 4-34). essay, Pearson Australia.
Summary
The national board of professional teaching standards developed a system of standards that represent a national consensus of the characteristics of effective teachers including the standards of knowledge of learners, knowledge about literacy, equity/fairness/diversity, learning environment, instructional resources, instructional decision making, assessment, integration, reading, writing, listening/speaking, viewing, collaboration with families and communities, teachers as learners, and professional responsibility.
Nuggets
Teacher quality is the most important factor in determining how well students learn.
The 3 most important theories are the constructivism, sociolinguistics (learners use language to organize their thoughts), and information processing theories.
Louise Rosenblatt calls comprehension “interpretation,” meaning that it comes because of a two-way transaction between readers and the text.
Classrooms are social settings. Joint ownership of the “home” means that the teachers are the guides, instructors, coaches, and evaluators.
A successful classroom has safety, respect, high expectations, risk taking, collaboration, choice, responsibility, and family/community involvement.
The balanced approach to instruction is based on a comprehensive view of literacy that combines explicit instruction, guided practice, collaborative learning, and independent reading and writing.
Researchers compared the balanced approach to a multivitamin, suggesting that it brings together the best of teacher- and student-centered learning theories
In scaffolding, the 5 levels of teacher support are modeled, shared, interactive, guided, and independent.
Activity
I will read the entire article(s)/chapter(s) in one sitting and complete all parts of the assignment at one time.
I will not listen to music (maybe just instrumental) while working on this assignment.
I will take more notes than just the nuggets while completing the assigned readings.
Reflection
This was a great activity to do, and I’m glad that I did it because it made me reflect deeply on how I am as a student, and it is always great to be setting goals for the future. I worked on this assignment over the weekend, so it was split between Saturday and Sunday, so I found myself not being the most attentive because of that. I also was listening to music while working on it so I got distracted because of that as well! In the future while working on these readerly explorations I will try to work on those things! Engaging in this readerly exploration helped me better comprehend what I read and deepened my mastery of the course content because it made me recognize where I was falling short in my work and made me more aware of it for next time!

As a part of BBA, Club Rapunzel was invited to special programming at Accelerate 2022, Amazon’s largest forum for seller announcements of the year. Along with workshops, the conference included a fireside chat with Doug Herrington, Amazon’s new CEO of Worldwide Amazon Stores, and special guest speaker Venus Williams, legendary tennis champion, successful entrepreneur, and small business advocate.

The Impact of Rewards Systems on Employee Motivation and Performance
In today's competitive business landscape, organizations strive to maximize employee productivity and performance. Central to achieving this goal is understanding the critical role of employee motivation. By implementing effective rewards systems, companies can significantly influence employee engagement, job satisfaction, and overall performance.
Understanding Rewards Systems
Rewards systems encompass a variety of incentives and recognition mechanisms designed to encourage desired behaviors and outcomes within an organization. These systems can range from monetary bonuses and promotions to non-monetary rewards such as recognition, flexible work arrangements, and opportunities for skill development.
The Psychological Impact of Rewards
Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Motivation
Psychologists differentiate between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation arises from internal factors such as personal interest or enjoyment in the task itself, while extrinsic motivation stems from external rewards or incentives.
How Rewards Influence Behavior
Rewards have a profound effect on behavior by activating the brain's pleasure centers and reinforcing specific actions. However, the type and timing of rewards can influence whether they enhance or diminish intrinsic motivation.
Key Components of Effective Rewards Systems
Clarity and Transparency
Effective rewards systems are transparent and clearly communicate the criteria for earning rewards. Employees should understand what behaviors or outcomes are rewarded and how they can achieve them.
Alignment with Organizational Goals
Rewards systems should align with the organization's strategic objectives and values. When rewards are tied to performance metrics that reflect the company's mission and vision, employees are more likely to be motivated to contribute to its success.
Timeliness and Frequency of Rewards
Timely recognition and rewards reinforce desired behaviors and encourage continued performance improvement. Regular feedback and acknowledgment of achievements contribute to a positive work culture.
Benefits of Effective Rewards Systems
Increased Productivity
Motivated employees are more productive and committed to achieving their goals. By providing meaningful rewards, organizations can inspire employees to go above and beyond in their roles.
Higher Job Satisfaction
When employees feel valued and appreciated, they experience higher levels of job satisfaction. This leads to lower turnover rates and a more stable workforce.
Improved Employee Retention
Effective rewards systems contribute to employee retention by creating a positive work environment where employees feel recognized and supported in their professional development.
Challenges and Pitfalls
Overemphasis on Extrinsic Rewards
While extrinsic rewards can initially motivate employees, over-reliance on them may lead to a decrease in intrinsic motivation. Employees may become less engaged if they perceive rewards as the sole reason for performing well.
Lack of Fairness or Equity
Inequitable distribution of rewards can breed resentment and undermine morale within the organization. It's essential to ensure that rewards are distributed fairly based on performance and contributions.
Potential for Demotivation
In some cases, poorly designed rewards systems can have unintended consequences, such as fostering competition or creating a sense of entitlement among employees. Careful consideration must be given to the potential impact of rewards on individual and team dynamics.
Case Studies and Examples
Successful Implementation Stories
Companies like Google and Microsoft have achieved success by implementing innovative rewards systems that prioritize employee well-being and development. These companies offer a range of perks and benefits, including flexible work arrangements, generous parental leave policies, and opportunities for career growth.
Lessons Learned from Failures
On the other hand, organizations that have faced challenges with their rewards systems often cite issues such as lack of alignment with organizational goals, inadequate communication, and failure to recognize individual contributions.
Strategies for Implementing Rewards Systems
Tailoring Rewards to Individual Preferences
One size does not fit all when it comes to rewards. Employers should consider the diverse needs and preferences of their workforce and offer a variety of incentives to accommodate different motivational drivers.
Providing Opportunities for Growth and Development
In addition to tangible rewards, employees value opportunities for learning and career advancement. Investing in employee development programs can enhance motivation and loyalty.
Measuring the Impact
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for Assessing Effectiveness
To evaluate the effectiveness of rewards systems, organizations can track key performance indicators such as employee engagement, retention rates, and productivity metrics. Regular surveys and feedback sessions can provide valuable insights into employee satisfaction and morale.
Feedback Loops for Continuous Improvement
Continuous feedback and assessment are essential for refining rewards systems over time. By soliciting input from employees and monitoring outcomes, organizations can identify areas for improvement and make adjustments accordingly.
Adapting to Changing Work Environments
Remote Work Considerations
The rise of remote work has prompted organizations to rethink their rewards strategies. Virtual team-building activities, digital recognition platforms, and flexible work arrangements are among the approaches being adopted to motivate remote employees.
Diversity and Inclusion Aspects
Effective rewards systems should be inclusive and equitable, taking into account the diverse backgrounds and experiences of employees. Recognizing and celebrating cultural diversity can foster a sense of belonging and contribute to a more inclusive workplace culture.
Ethical Considerations
Avoiding Manipulation or Coercion
Rewards should never be used to manipulate or coerce employees into performing tasks against their will. It's essential to maintain ethical standards and ensure that rewards are offered in a genuine and transparent manner.
Ensuring Fairness and Equality
Fairness and equality are fundamental principles of effective rewards systems. Employers must strive to create a level playing field where all employees have an equal opportunity to earn rewards based on their contributions and performance.
Future Trends in Rewards Systems
Incorporation of Technology
Advances in technology are reshaping the landscape of rewards systems, with companies increasingly leveraging automation, artificial intelligence, and data analytics to personalize rewards and streamline administration processes.
Personalization and Customization
The future of rewards systems lies in personalization and customization, where rewards are tailored to individual preferences and goals. By offering personalized incentives and recognition, organizations can maximize employee engagement and satisfaction.
Conclusion
In conclusion, rewards systems play a crucial role in driving employee motivation and performance. By understanding the psychological principles behind motivation and implementing effective rewards strategies, organizations can create a culture of excellence where employees feel valued, engaged, and empowered to succeed.
