the boys are on one side of the room, fooling around. the girls, separated into small groups. a few are on their phones.

the DJ starts cackling madly. everyones head raises like we're deer, and we recognize the song beginning to play. the cha cha slide.

we look into each others eyes and know what to do. everyone puts away their phones and gets into formation.

in unison, we hop one time, slide to the left, slide to the right, and cha cha.

when the song ends, we disperse just as suddenly as we gathered.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- DJ Casper, the creator of the world-famous "Cha Cha Slide," has died at 58 years old.

The Chicago native lost his battle with cancer on Monday…

Casper was one of Chicago's greatest treasures. He came up with one of the most popular line dances to date. Yet, he never forgot where he came from…
