RACHEL RANKS: DARK SOULS TRILOGY BOSSES FROM WORST TO BEST
#19: Champion Gundyr (Dark Souls 3)
“Once, a champion came late to the festivities, and was greeted by a shrine without fire, and a bell that would not toll.”
Here it is: the only reused boss I actually love. THE CHAMP has great lore surrounding the fight, and returning to the start for one last blast from the past feels so satisfying as he tests you once more, not at the beginning, but in preparation for the end. The completely different second phase works great here, communicating the emotions he feels as he descends into madness and providing us with the heartbreaking knowledge that the monstrous shell we fought so long ago was reduced to that pitiful state by our hand. His moveset is also unique for armored warriors in the series; the way he incorporates punches, bashes, and kicks into attacks with his weapon demonstrates just how far he’s fallen from his glory as a knight. And when he hits, he hits HARD. The context, power, and completely different second phase make this a boss to remember…even if we’ve already seen how it begins.

If Gundyr and the Looking Glass Knight were both part of the same era, they would be deep rooted comrades and an unstoppable duo.

I love going back to playing Dark Souls 3 but with my current vocabulary. Getting my ass kicked by Champion Gundyr and each time I die I go "girlll whyyyyyyyy :("

As much as I hate to admit it, the feeling of satisfaction after beating a dark souls boss after a bunch of attempts as you slowly learn the attack patterns and openings for counterattacks is kinda sexy ngl
