i love how each one of the yeom siblings is relatable but in completely different ways. and relatable not in the "i do this (sometimes)" sense but "it feels like someone ripped open my chest and looked inside" sense.
there's gi jeong with her irrational fear of embarrassment, driving her to the point of faking an accident. nothing makes me feel more seen than the visual representation of me wanting to get hit by a truck every time i feel like i've been perceived. why can't you, the world, shut your eyes off to me existing? feeling tired to the core, all day every day without a valid reason to back it up. wanting to take off your arms and legs for a moment, wishing for someone to carry you and scrub your back. analogies that never sit right with anyone. i'm sorry i told you that i would pick up my lover's severed head, do you still think i'm hot? guilt soaring so high in your system that you're on your knees, bowing down to what? you don't know yourself. but bowing down nonetheless - i'm sorry i'm sorry i'm sorry - as the moonlight creeps in.
chang hee with his lack of direction in life, living from one day to the next in itself can be be a chore at times and he's felt it. how do you expect me to peer into the future when i barely managed to survive today? why can't that be enough? realization dawning upon you that you might be the very thing you hate and wanting to slap the wits out of yourself because of it. in constant search for an elder male figure to validate you because you never received any from the one whose blood and bones are your very own. tell me i worked hard. tell me to rest. giving up on persuing romantic interests because you know, just know, that you will not be enough.
and mi jeong. mi jeong my beloved. no character has touched the inner workings of my soul as much as her. not feeling like you belong in public settings, forcing yourself to smile and nod because that's what they've told you will make you worthy of acceptance. wondering how people living on top of the world don't just jump off, thunderstorms making you comfortable because all you've ever wanted is for the world to end. never finding the strength in yourself to fight back, never being able to free yourself from the familiarity of attachments, never feeling complete. she's exactly what the personification of daily life existentialism would look like, neither happy nor sad, stuck in a repetitive state of being. how do you not want to coddle her in your arms? frogs getting torn to shreds, bad-mouthing your senior at work, biting into the flesh of what you adore - discovering that loving is listening, loving is saying out loud whatever comes to mind.
i will take this reassurance - you, too, can live the life of a main character - down to my grave.

props to chang-hee’s friends for always listening to him tho, maybe they can’t always keep up or even figure out what tiggers a certain thought, but they allow him space, and that is more than most of us can say for ourselves

The ending for my liberation notes was amazing. The coin that miraculously didn't fall into the gutter represented Gu-ssi. He spent his entire life living on the edge and risking it all however he hasn't succumbed to all the negative effects of his lifestyle (drinking, etc..). He had the chance to pick himself up (just like he picked up the coin) and liberate himself. Which we can assume he's going to be doing from now on as the flask of whiskey he bought at the convenience store was left beside the homeless man. He is walking towards his "liberation" which we probably can assume would be Mi Jeong because we could see her patiently waiting on someone. Everyone felt some kind of liberation even if it was only for a split second. Everyone will continue to work towards a more steady liberation, not just one that lasts for a split second but one that'll be constant. That's where the members starting back the club comes in, Chang Hee finding his passion, etc...

Since my “Missing MLN” hours are still ongoing, there is something that I realized now that a few days have passed since the finale- I was never nervous. It’s been around 4 years since I started my kdrama journey and I have come to realize that there are 3 types of endings in kdramas: one where the entire finale was not needed as it served as a filler episode; most kdramas follow this plot where the main couple could have avoided all the drama in ep 14/15 if they just talked to each other. The second is one where the entire story is ruined by the finale. It usually happens when the writer has a specific way that they wanted the story to end and they didn’t take into account the characters and their arcs (2521, I’m looking at you) and then there is a third one- this one is pretty rare and I have only seen a handful of dramas where I am satisfied with the ending since all the plotlines are tied up nicely since the characters and their arcs are kept in mind while writing the script. While some kdramas do overlap, most of them stick to just one category.
For me, MLN has become the drama that falls in the third category. Even while I was waiting for the finale to be released, I was more excited to know how the stories of these characters that came to mean so much to me would play out and I was not disappointed. While I do detest open endings, especially when it would have been much better for the story if they had provided a specific ending, I loved the openness of mln’s finale. For me, it said that there is no end to learning, to growing as a human being. All of us are here trying our best, so how can we tell someone how to live? That specific sentiment filled me with so much happiness. The drama did a brilliant job in telling me even if I feel that I have reached rock bottom, it’s alright as long as I hold on because I am not the only one who feels that way. The sense of companionship that mln provided, the way it told me “I am here and I see you” gave me a sense of comfort that I had been searching for.

I loved that ending so much.
One, because there really was no doubt as to whether or not Mi Jeong and Gu were staying together. They were happier than ever in each other's presence. Gu really opening up about his inner demons and Mi Jeong listening patiently, like she always does, and then showing him a much healthier way to let go of those demons: to welcome them with a smile instead of burdening yourself with so much hatred for them.
And two, this ending really felt like a beginning for all the characters. They were all taking steps towards new opportunities and a more stable reality. I really thought Gi Jeong's liberation would be ending up alone and becoming comfortable alone but instead she knew she wanted to be with someone and she was willing to put in the work to be happy with this man she chose for herself. And that's commendable as hell because she knows what she wants and she's willing to work for it. Chang Hee's closure threw me for a loop ngl because I wasn't expecting it at all. But similar to Chang Hee's reaction, it's kinda funny in a dark way that he would end up in a funeral director's training session after all the traumatic deaths he witnessed in his short life. It's like life opening up this new door that seems wild but makes all the sense in the world. Mi Jeong's liberation is my favorite because we physically see her become so much happier compared to the beginning, and this was done slowly and purely from her own efforts. She put in the work to be where she is. And in her efforts she realizes that she wasn't always this jaded, burnt out human being. When she talks about her old diaries, she's so excited to remember that she actually did have a lot of love in her, making her believe that it is possible for her to be full of love once again. And she is! She feels lovable because of Gu's displays of affection and she's letting go of all this anger she kept inside for years and she feels lighter. Then finally we have Gu. His ending makes me feel so at peace I want to personally go and hug the writer. The writer could have chosen to keep Gu in this hell he created for himself and it seems like that at first after his fight with the opposing gang. But then we see the beautiful effect Mi Jeong is having on him because instead of drowning his anger in alcohol and going to find the asshole who ran off with his money, he takes a step back and tells him he'll welcome with a smile because he doesn't want to weigh himself down with more hatred. He choose the opposite of hatred; the absence of hate. And then the writer comes back and reminds us that we won't get rainbows and sunshine just yet because he's making a move with his money, whether it's to pay back the chairman with his own money or taking the money to leave and start over; we don't know. We also see him reach for alcohol again, but this time the world is on his side because his coin is saved and he can pick up the coin again, he can pick himself back up. He leaves the alcohol behind and walks towards Mi Jeong who is waiting for him with a smile, as loving as ever. His new opportunities await him as well.
There's so much to unpack in this last episode alone but these are the few reasons why I'm over the moon with this episode. It was the perfect balance between realistic but optimistic and I can only be grateful to the writer and director for their choices. Happy endings will never be overrated.

Black Dog 7
Story: 8
Acting: 10
Chemistry: 10
Comparable to: Hot Stove League (kdrama) ;
The drama really focuses on the backgrounds of what hardships teachers may have to go through and face. Mainly dealing with the pressure from the parents, students, faculty, and board so dealing with all this and with a struggling school trying to get back on its feet, It makes an enjoyable storyline. Acting is top notch throughout the cast as well. There are some small drawbacks where the storyline did feel uneven sometimes and draggy towards the middle late half. Also some situations did feel a bit far fetched, but overall still very much watchable.
