So I've been pondering on how the Darcy-Bingley friendship came to be for a while, and like most people, I imagine that it was Bingley driven. I have now decided that when Bingley met Darcy - haughty, moody, catty man - he either unconsciously or explicitly reminded him of Caroline. "I must befriend him, he feels like home".

While I'm on a Darcy kick (lmao as if I'm ever not, peak blorbo, etc), there's another very strange criticism I encountered the other day.

There's a long-running debate (that briefly comes up in the novel itself) about whether Darcy should have revealed Wickham's true character earlier/more publicly. This is complicated for a lot of reasons, but I saw an argument recently that was like ... okay, he couldn't really talk about Georgiana, and he couldn't talk about it in a way that would lead Wickham to destroy Georgiana's reputation, and possibly nobody would have believed him over Wickham anyway, but that's his fault for being so unlikable and anyway, he could have told Bingley! Then Bingley could warn someone, so why didn't Darcy do that?

Um. He did.

There's this whole thing in the novel where Bingley does try to deliver a warning about Wickham. It doesn't work because a) his information obviously comes from Darcy and b) Bingley forgot the details about Wickham that, according to him, Darcy has told him multiple times.

Caroline also warns Elizabeth in an admittedly shitty way, but it's so heavily filtered through her snobbery that Elizabeth doesn't listen to that, either.

This isn't meant to completely resolve the debate over what Darcy could have done about Wickham without jeopardizing Georgiana, but he absolutely did warn Bingley about Wickham and Bingley tried to pass it on.

I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.

Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.

In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

She doesn't know the specifics (she says so herself, and for sure none of the Bingleys know about Georgiana), but she's been given some information. This is what she says to Elizabeth before she gets distracted by snobbery:

"Your sister [Jane] has been talking to me about him [Wickham], and asking me a thousand questions; and I find that the young man forgot to tell you, among his other communications, that he was the son of old Wickham, the late Mr Darcy's steward. Let me recommend you, however, as a friend, not to give implicit confidence to all his assertions: for as to Mr Darcy's using him ill, it is perfectly false; for, on the contrary, he has been always remarkably kind to him, though George Wickham has treated Mr Darcy in a most infamous manner. I do not know the particulars, but I know very well that Mr Darcy is not in the least to blame, that he cannot bear to hear George Wickham mentioned, and that though my brother thought he could not well avoid including him in his invitation to the officers, he was excessively glad to find that he had taken himself out of the way."

Bingley also doesn't know the whole story (according to both himself and the narrator), but Darcy told him the history of Wickham and the living he was supposed to have received. Jane's information from Bingley is this:

"[Bingley] is perfectly convinced that Mr Wickham has deserved much less attention from Mr Darcy than he has received; and I am sorry to say that by his account as well as his sister's, Mr Wickham is by no means a respectable young man. I am afraid he has been very imprudent, and has deserved to lose Mr Darcy's regard."

"He [Bingley] does not exactly recollect the circumstances [of Wickham and the inheritance he was supposedly robbed of], though he has heard them from Mr Darcy more than once, but he believes that it [the living] was left to him [Wickham] conditionally only."

Bingley and Caroline seem to have fairly similar information and both tried to get warnings out in their own ways.
