“Look, I don't know about you, but I really believe that there’s one person out there for everybody. That what this is about. Its not just some sappy love letter, telling her how my heart stops every time that i see her. It’s in there, but.. its not just to tell how I think she’s more the homecoming queen, or Mike’s girlfriend or, hows there’s this really amazing person inside of her that no one even bother’s to see. That in there too, but, What its really about is how she should just give me a chance, just one chance. Maybe we could find out if there’s a reason for all this. Why she not with Mike tonight, and after 4 years, I’m still here with this letter. Maybe we could find out what that reason is. You know? Its time to find out. I think I’m ready to do this. Finally.”

Hook (1991)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Hook has one burst of extreme strobe lights lasting about 3 seconds, happening just after a door closes on a ship, and the screen goes black at the end of a parade onto the ship, about 39 minutes into the film. A similar effect happens for about 20 seconds immediately after a scene where a large person tries to comfort a small person, about an hour and 44 minutes in. One character who appears frequently is sometimes depicted as a bright light with a bit of a flicker.
There are a few flying scenes that depict extreme heights and speeds, but all of the camera work in this film is very smooth.
Flashing Lights: 6/10. Motion Sickness: 3/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: A child is murdered. A person exhibits suicidal ideation and begs for help while about to make an attempt. A scene where characters trade childish insults contains descriptions of disgusting ideas.

This is first time I've watched this in adulthood, this movie is fucking beautiful. Colorful neon streets, the villains are in incredible Technicolor, but also had that 1940-50s mob movie noir style.
It's a goddamn art piece. The matte painting backgrounds, the lighting, the insanely beautifully made character makeups for the mobsters.
There are so many old school character actors mixed with contemporary guys like Pacino etc. And then you have brilliant Dick Van Dyke as a crooked character!
I'll even go out on a limb and say even Madonna was excellent!
It's a cleverly built movie, beautiful visuals, unbelievably beautiful makeup.
It's a treasure!

Hook (1991)
Tumblr media
A whole family outing for my first silver screen Spielberg fix seemed fitting. Who knows if I connected this one with Jaws, Indiana Jones (known as Junna Jones in my family) and E.T. at the time. I recently rewatched this movie and enjoyed the flashes of realism from Charlie Korsmo’s Jack Banning, despite taking a dislike to the turncoat son’s character on my first watch. It still bothered me how Thud Butt’s legs didn’t quite seem accounted for in his famous plank rolling scene but the action set pieces (with emphasis on the word ‘set’) were exciting and enjoyable, and kind of orange.
Anyway, this film marked the beginning of many years of wondering what all the fuss was about with Robin Williams. The next time we’d cross paths at the cinema wouldn’t be for another fifteen years. Nothing against the guy, his humour just never really did it for me. On the plus side, this film passed the Bechdel test, no problem. Speaking of girls, I wasn’t particularly interested in Julia Roberts as Tinkerbelle and if either of my brothers try to tell you otherwise, they are absolute liars, alright?
I suppose I’ll never get a better chance to mention that my dad owns the little round glasses worn by ‘uncle’ Bob Hoskin’s Smee, as he got them cheap at an auction and I have always really liked that.
