Abroad with the Broad Shelled Turtle
Chelodina expansa, more commonly known as the broad shelled turtle, is one of the largest freshwater turtles in Australia. The length of their shells can reach up to 50 cm (19.6 in), and their neck accounts for an additional 60-80% of their total length. Because of this length, C. expansa tucks its head in sideways as opposed to pulling it directly into its shell. At maximum, females reach a mass of 6 kg (13.2 lbs), while males only typically weigh about 4 kg (8.8 lbs). The top of the shell, or carapace, is dark brown or green, while the underside is a light cream; the same is true for the broad shelled turtle's head, neck, and legs. The feet are webbed, and have large claws which help adults to dig or fend off predators.
While they spend the winter buried in the mud, the broad shelled turtle is most active during the summer months, from November to March. During this time they are almost entirely aquatic, rarely emerging from the water even to bask. This species lives throughout the river basins of eastern Australia, and can be found in rivers, dams, lakes, and wetlands with plenty of vegetation cover. C. expansa is entirely carnivorous, feeding on crustaceans, aquatic insects, fish, and frogs via ambush, and carrion whenever it can find it. To locate prey, they have a keen sense of smell. Adults are not usually predated upon due to their thick shells and sharp claws, but eggs and juveniles are often prey for foxes, dingos, birds, rakalai, and large fish.
C. expansa nests in the winter, beginning in late February or March. Outside the mating season, individuals are generally solitary, but aggressive territoriality has not been observed. When mating time roles around, males seek out females to mate with; following the encounter, the female climbs out onto the bank and digs a nest for a clutch of anywhere from 5 to 28 eggs. To seal the nest, she then slams her body into the re-piled sand and mud, compacting it into a plug that will remain intact until the following year.
Incubation takes about 360 days, though some nests have been recorded as hatching at 500 days; this process is exceptionally slow due to the two periods of diapause, or developmental delays, that embryos pass through in order to survive the winter. Juveniles hatch in the spring, and emerge from the nest at the first heavy rain. It's unknown how long these turtles can live in the wild, but given their slow growth rate and adult invulnerability it's likely that they can live in excess of 20 years.
Conservation status: The IUCN consideres the broad shelled turtle to be Near Threatened, due primarily to habitat loss and high rates of nest predation by introduced foxes.

I first thought these two were the same species, but they are different. It seems a few turtles gather here to feed.

Irwin's turtle (Elseya irwini), also known as the northern snapping turtle, is a rare species of freshwater turtle in the family Chelidae, which is native to Australia. The species was named after conservationist and television personality Steve Irwin, who along with his father Bob Irwin discovered and described the first specimen known to science in 1990. These turtles are endemic to the Johnstone and Burdekin Rivers and there tributaries particularly Broken River and Bowen Creek where they prefer areas of well oxygenated flowing water. There diet is comprised primarily of grasses, fallen fruit, algae, aquatic plants, carrion, and invertebrates such as shrimp, insects, and mollusks especially snails. Irwin’s turtles are themselves preyed upon by crocodiles, feral hogs, and goannas. There is some considerable sexual dimorphism with males reaching around 6 to 8 inches (15 to 20 cms) in length while females reach 10 to 12 inches (25 to 30cms). While both sexes sport a orangish brown shell that’s often covered in algae, males sport limbs necks and heads that are a uniform olive to grey coloration while females are notable for having a cream colored head and neck which can be tinted slightly yellow or pink. The nesting season occurs from april to july, after mating a female will dig a nest into a river bank where she will lay 8 to 24 eggs, which will hatch some 120 to 150 days later. Under ideal conditions an Irwin’s turtle may live upwards of 30 years.

Kaz and Yeager Moments part 2
Tumblr media
This might be spoilers for anyone else who hasn't watch this series yet. I have been re-read my old notebooks, there are some my favorite moments with these two so I decided to write these here.
Yeager checks on Kaz trying to send a message to the resistance. As Kaz thinks he could send a messsage through the transmitter, it turns out Poe is already standing behind them, surprising them.
When Poe is going to take Kaz for investigate, Kaz is excited but asks how they will get out the colossus without the first order noticing, Poe tells Kaz his plan is crazy but it might work. Yeager immediately knows Poe's plan.
"Oh no, you're not thinking of pulling a widow maker, are you ?"
"Widow maker ? I'm not even married."
Yeager playfully slaps Kaz behind his head as Poe warning "Given how dangerous this will be, that's probably a good thing."
Kaz rushes back to Yeager's repairs with Torra and CB-23, he askes Neeku where is Yeager. Neeku says he's in his office but he immediately knockes on the door when Neeku saying he doesn't want to be disturbed. Yeager tells him to go away but Kaz needs to talk with him about the first order making Hype and Aunt Z disappeared. Yeager lets Kaz, Torra, and CB-23 enter his office. It turns out, Captain Doza, Torra's father is with Yeager.
Yeager tells that he and Doza want to find a way to take down the communications blanket so they can coordinate with the resistance and kick the first order out. Kaz says they don't have time for that
"If we don't act now, we will never see our friends again !"
Yeager thinks about it as calling Kaz. Kaz responds "What ?" "You're right, good luck." Which Kaz is surprised then saying "Thanks Yeager." Before he left Yeager's office with Torra and CB-23.
After Commander Pyre and the stormtroopers caught team fireball for conspiring against the first order, he is gonna impound the fireball ship. Tam is shocked.
"You can't impound the fireball..." She then stared at Kaz and Yeager "..tell them this is all a mistake." Kaz and Yeager start to feel guilty to put Tam and Neeku in danger.
Tumblr media
When Commander Pyre shoots Bucket off of the platform, Yeager is shocked as Kaz pulling him back as telling they have to keep moving. Fortunately, Bucket turns out to be fine thanks to chelidae.
Tumblr media
Kaz, Yeager, Neeku, and CB-23 make it to enter Yeager's office, Kaz noticed Tam is gonna be captured but Yeager tells Kaz to get inside now as closing the door.
Kaz is panicked as asking why didn't she come and Yeager says that she is confused as escaping through the vents.
During sneaking through the vent, Neeku is confused why the first order chasing them. Kaz feels it's about time to tell him the truth. As he telling that he is a resistance spy, Yeager is shocked hearing as stare them.
Tumblr media
After they found the hiding place, they are planning to send the message to the resistance. Kaz has a crazy idea "What if we take on water and drop the Colossus under the ocean ?" Which everyone is so shocked. Yeager says this will destroy the station but Kaz tells him to hear him out.
Yeager listens Kaz's crazy plan that Kaz thinks it will work, he has a doubt about this plan but it is the only way to send the message to the resistance. He follows Kaz and CB-23 swimming to the top of the tower.
Yeager tells Kaz "I know you're not the most experienced spy but I'd fight alongside you any day."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right after CB-23 sent the message to the message, Kaz is shot which Yeager is shocked seeing him get hurt. Yeager sacrifices himself after he saying good job to Kaz. Kaz is shocked as Yeager pushing him into the sea to escape from the first order. Next, Yeager orders CB-23 to help him and letting himself captured by Commander Pyre and stormtroopers.
There are more to come...

u should infodump about turtles. as a treat. what is ur favorite turtle. the people want to know, tumblr user boxymikey. 🎤 - anon t
well i cant deny the will of the people!!! asking me to pick a favourite is like asking me to pick between my children 😭
if i'm to restrict myself to LIVING species (sorry to leviathanochelys and archelon) i think... i have to pick the bellinger river snapping turtle. they're a critically endangered species native to new south wales, and in 2015 a virus wiped out 90% of the species. there's a captive breeding program that is working to increase their numbers, but they're functionally extinct in the wild.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while they are omnivorous, their diet primarily consists of benthic macro-invertebrate communities. their preferred habitat is in the deeper pools of the bellinger river, and the species is capable of staying underwater for extensive periods of time due to their ability to breathe through their cloaca (aka, breathe through their butt).
like all native australian turtle species (barring sea turtles), the bellinger river snapping turtle is side-necked and aquatic in nature. all side-necked turtles are either aquatic or semi-aquatic, and they can be found in southern africa and madagascar, south america, australia, and a variety of islands in the indian ocean.
bellinger river snapping turtles fall under the family chelidae, which includes a variety of turtles from australia, new guinea, indonesia, and south america. one of its more unique looking species is the mata mata (which i've seen a post about floating around i think?). members of family chelidae (referred to as chelids) also have genetic sex determination, unlike most other turtles which have their sex determined by temperature.
also fun fact: leatherback sea turtles aren't the only species of turtle to be placed in a family where they are the only living genus. leatherbacks are a part of dermochelyidae, which it shares with several extinct genera. similarly, the family carettochelyidae contains several genera, but only one the pig-nosed turtle survives today, the family dermatemydidae has four genera, with the only extant one being the hickatee, and the big-headed turtle is the only species in its entire family, extant or extinct.

The Intriguing Diet of the Dahl’s Toad-headed Turtle (Mesoclemmys dahli)
────────────
Tumblr media
The Dahl’s Toad-Headed Turtle is an omnivorous freshwater dwelling member of the chelidae family. They have been monitored to feed primarily at night, although some have been captured during the day using bait, which suggests some type of potential diurnal activity. Messoclemmys dahli prefers a varied diet of snails, crustaceans, aquatic insects, tadpoles, frogs, small fish, carrion found in or near the water, and occasionally aquatic plant material. On one occasion, ants were found inside the stomachs of some specimens that had been estivating, suggesting they could also actively feed on land.
────────────
Not a lot of specific information can be found on the diet of Messoclemmys dahli, let alone on the species as a whole itself, but by using their general location as a clue we can assume what species they might be regularly hunting within their habitat. By focusing on the department of Sucre in Colombia, where a good number of specimens have been recorded to inhabit, we can assume that the Dahl’s Toad-headed Turtle would possibly be feeding on the following creatures;
Marisa cornuarietis, or the Colombian Ramshorn Apple Snail, is a species of large, freshwater snail. They are found pretty widespread in South America, although their type locality is unknown. It’s easy to believe that Messoclemmys dahli would encounter these large mollusks and make a quick, crunchy snack out of them.

The Bolivian White-lipped frog, or Lepodactylus bolivianus, is a small-to medium sized frog found widely across South America, being commonly seen in Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela. These amphibians will make their nests in small temporary ponds, man-made watering holes, and small swamps where they will lay their eggs atop a foam nest on the water’s surface. The shared habitat of the small pools of water brings me to believe that the Dahl’s Toad-headed Turtle wouldn’t have a hard time making a meal out of a smaller Bolivian White-lipped frog, or even its tadpoles.

Another potential species that could fall prey to the Messoclemmys dahli’s appetite could be Poecilia caucana, the Cauca Molly. The Cauca Molly is a small, freshwater fish that lives in shallow waters in Colombia.

────────────
Although we do not know much of the specifics regarding the nature of the Dahl’s Toad-headed Turtles, we are still able to piece together a potential idea on how these reptiles sustain their daily lives using what little data we do have available. It is important that these reptiles continue to be observed and studied so be may know more about them one day, rather than making educated guesses.

I hope you enjoyed reading and if you are interested in learning more about these mysterious turtles then I would suggest checking out my blog again tomorrow when we will go over what is known about their reproduction behaviors! The Matamata Turtle is a large ambush predator,  originating from slow-moving ponds and rivers in South America.  The rugged carapace resembles tree bark,  and the skin has a multitude of spines,  flaps,  and barbels to give a leaf-like appearance.  The long snout acts as a snorkel while the Matamata waits for prey.  In adults,  shells can reach as large as 45cm,  and can weigh up to 15kg.

A Mata-Fine Mata Mata turtle
A resident of the Amazon and Orinoco river basins, the mata mata (Chelus fimbriatus) is a species of freshwater turtle found in streams, pools, and wetlands throughout northern South America, from Venezuela to Brazil, as well as the island of Trinidad. This species is almost entirely aquatic, and excursions on land are extremely rare. However, they are not well adapted for swimming in open water, and are thus most commonly seen in shallow bodies of water with soft, muddy bottoms.
C. fimbriatus has a unique appearance among turtle species. The carapace-- the part of the shell that covers the back--it has three ridges running down its length and is often covered in algae, and so resembles tree bark. The head is similarly shaped to resemble leaf litter; it’s triangular, and the fringes around the cheeks and mouth break up the outline. The mata mata’s nose is long and snorkel-like, allowing it to remain just under the surface. Despite its unobtrusive looks, this species is actually quite large; mata mata can grow up to 45 cm (1.5 ft) long and weigh up to 17.2 kg (38 lbs).
Because of its unique body shape and camouflage, the mata mata is well suited to a sedentary life, and has few natural predators. It has extremely poor eyesight, though it does share an adaptation with other nocturnal reptiles that allows the eyes to reflect low levels of light. To compensate, the mata mata relies on its hearing, amplified by a large tympanium on either side of the head, and on the barbels lining its jaw. In addition to being an excellent costume, these barbels allow C. fimbriatus to sense vibrations in the water. The mata mata spends most of its time submurged or buried under the mud, waiting for potential prey like fish, worms, crustaceans, and insects to swim by. When they’re close enough, the mata mata opens its jaws and sucks its target in whole. Individuals have also been recorded herding schools of fish into confined areas before feeding.
The only time the mata mata emerges from the water is to reproduce. Individuals are solitary until September or October, when they begin to seek out mates. When a male encounters a female, he approaches while opening and closing his mouth, extending his limbs, and moving the flaps on the side of his head. If the female is impressed, she allows him to mount. Afterwards, she hauls herself out onto the nearby bank and builds a rudimentary nest from the forest litter. There, she lays 12-28 eggs, which will take about 200 days to hatch. There is no information on how long hatchlings take to fully mature, but individuals can live anywhere from 15-30 years.
Conservation status: The mata mata has not been evaluated by the IUCN, but is threatened by habitat destruction and overharvesting for the pet trade.

Up and Over
Pairing: Din Djarin x reader
Word Count: 1.8K
Summary: After sleeping in his cot, things have changed between you and Mando. Just how much, you’re not entirely sure. That is, until he makes a random stop on Castilon for lodging.
Warnings: swearing (just a lil), Mando’s bedroom voice, suggestive at the end… I think that’s it?
AN: Yo I actually did research on this one, look at me go learning about planets and species in Star Wars 😂 Technically this is a sequel to Suum Ca’nara, but it can be read on its own. And I lowkey wanna write a ✨spicy✨ part three… so there’s that 😂Thanks again to @deceiverofgodss for beta reading, ilysm 💖
Tumblr media
“What are we here for?” you asked Mando as he landed the ship in a patch of forest off the shore. Castilon was covered in water, scattered with small populated islands. It didn’t seem like a logical place for a bounty to hide, there wasn’t a whole lot of room to run. Unless of course, the bounty was amphibious…
“Finding lodging,” he replied, shutting down the ship and turning out of his seat to head down into the hull, tucking the kid in one arm as he swung down with the other
“Is something wrong with the ship?” You asked, more confused than you were before as you followed him down. You watched him set the kid in his pod, only reaching for the blaster he took everywhere.
“No.” You hadn’t moved from your spot, but he went to lower the ramp and leave the ship. When he realized you hadn’t followed, he turned back to find your confused expression. “Just figured we could stop on the way, stretch our legs.” This was very unlike Mando. Hardly any weapons, detouring from the path, and stopping for proper sleep? But after the few hours you had already spent in hyperspace today, you were more than content to go along with it. He waited for you to sidle up next to him before he closed the ramp, standing close as the three of you made your way into town.
It was nice. Whatever was happening between you and Mando, it was really nice. Ever since that first night he’d shared his cot with you, the Mandalorian had become so much more open and comfortable with you. In those small moments where he teased you more, where you pushed each other’s buttons with smiles on your faces, where he came closer to you… it felt like he was your Mandalorian. Each night after that you had found each other in the darkness until you knew to just climb into his cot with him, your spare having been forgotten night after night.
You felt warm and safe cuddled into his chest, his large hands holding you close to him. He’d gotten more comfortable reaching for you in the dark and pressing you into him. It was clear that both of you slept so much deeper, waking up feeling more well-rested than either of you had in a long time.
And to your pleasant surprise, it was your Mandalorian who accompanied you into the small town, indulging both you and the kid in any shop or table that caught your attention. He put his hand on the small of your back as he leaned over your shoulder to see the goods in front of you, the kid happily snacking on a frog Mando got suckered into getting for him.
“You should get one,” he said softly, tilting his helmet to the delicate rope necklace in your hand. You turned to look at him over your shoulder with your eyebrows raised.
“No, I don’t need a necklace,” you retorted.
“It’s nice, get it.” he pressed. You half laughed and half scoffed at him.
“Mando, I’m not getting it.”
“How much?” he asked the older, turtle-looking Chelidae behind the table, completely ignoring you. You tried to wrestle the bad of credits from him with your free hand, which was a useless attempt.
“Three credits,” the old woman answered with a confused smile.
“Mando, I swear-” you tried, a smile spreading across your face as he dropped the credits on the table and took the necklace from you. “You’re so fucking stubborn,” you laughed, and you could hear the soft chuckle that came through his helmet as his gloved hands fastened it around your neck. You continued to jab back and forth at each other as you walked towards the small inn, smiling and standing impossibly close, the kid gurgling happily.
“What made you stop for lodging?” you finally asked him, his easy nature and un-Mando-like behavior being a pleasant though confusing change. His helmet continued to look ahead of him as he thought of an answer. One that wouldn’t flat-out betray him.
“The cot is in such a small space, I thought it’d be nice to sleep in something bigger,” he reasoned, and it was an answer that you accepted. He was tall, the space was a little cramped, he deserved a night where he could stretch out. And it was really only half an answer, but it’d be too hard to ask why he was being so… him. It would open up the whole discussion of what the two of you were, and you weren’t in any hurry to put so much pressure on the emotions behind all your little moments together.
Once you were inside the inn, things turned sour pretty quickly. You wondered if maybe seeing a Mandalorian fully clad in beskar armor made the innkeeper greedy to get the rest of Mandos credits, but you were having none of it.
“Seriously?” Mando replied, his irritation clear in his voice after the owner gave him the price. And it was high, especially for a single room in podunk nowhere.
“Well we do have to charge extra for making sure you’re undisturbed,” the clerk reminded the two of you with a sly smirk like he knew exactly what he was doing, which made you irrationally angry.
“You’re seriously going to charge us more for you to do less work?” you argued, raising your voice. Mando put a hand in front of you to try and settle you a bit. “You don’t need more money to tell your droids to lay off.”
“It’s fine, I’ll pay,” Mando sighed. As he went to reach for his credits you shoved his hand away, managing to fight him away from them this time.
“No, you’re not, because if it wasn’t for the shell on his back I’d have mistaken him for a slimy Hutt.” You were seething. As soon as the insult left your mouth you cursed yourself, knowing there was no chance of bartering a more reasonable deal out of the Chelidae now. “What kind of travelers do you think you’re getting who are going to pay such a ridiculous price?”
“Stop, let’s go,” Mando tried, now stepping between you and the counter. But you were just as stubborn as he was, and determined to teach this guy a lesson.
“No, I’m not-” With a squeal, your sentence was finished for you as two strong hands found your waist and launched you over his shoulder, Mando marching out the front door. The kid was absolutely delighted, laughing and looking up at you with a wide grin. You were not as pleased.
“Mando, put me down!” you yelled at him, propping yourself up on your elbows.
“I’m not dropping you until you calm down,” came his filtered voice, and you could hear the smile on his face. You wanted to smack it off of him.
“You calm down,” you snipped back. There were people looking at the three of you, more puzzled than usual. Not only were your companions a Mandalorian and a swamp rat, but the sight now included you slung over the former’s shoulder, pissed off and yelling back snappy retorts. It was definitely a sight.
“Sweet girl, I will carry you all the way home if I have to,” Mando half laughed as you reached the edge of the small town and approaching the forest, never relenting in your stubbornness. You froze at this statement though. Did he say home? He called the Razor Crest home… your home.
And the nickname was new. You two had never done those before, and you liked it. Almost too much.
Mando took your silence to cut in. “What got you so worked up?” You took a moment to think about your actions, and how angry you had gotten. You two had dealt with slimy shopkeeps plenty of times before, and all you usually would do was roll your eyes and walk away to let Mando decide if he was going to deal with it.
“You just, you’re so selfless,” you started hesitantly. “You do so little for yourself, and you give everything you have to everyone else. So the one time you wanted something for your own benefit . . . I don’t know, it’s just not fair that you got scammed out of it.”
“I would have paid for it.”
“I know, but you deserve better,” you admitted, and it struck a chord with Mando, his heart fluttering stupidly. To hear you talk about him so highly was making his body do funny things, his mind running faster than he could keep up with. Eventually, he opened his mouth and some of it poured out.
“I wasn’t doing it for me.” He felt you turn your head as if you were trying to look at him, prompting him to continue. “I was doing it for you.” Your body shook with silent amusement.
“Mando, you know I don’t need any of that.”
“But what if I wanted to give it to you? After cramming you in that tiny compartment every night, I wanted to give you a real bed for once.” This was a new level of stubbornness. And it was possibly even more infuriating, arguing with his sweet confessions.
“I like sleeping crammed up next to you, that’s why I do it every night, dumbass.” There was a long silent pause this time. No snappy retort, no laughter, no sigh of resignation. Just the sound of Mando’s boots crunching against the ground. You wanted desperately to know what was going on inside that helmet, what he was thinking. After a few moments you heard the ramp of the Crest lowering, and Mando finally spoke up.
“What’s the kid doing?” he asked quietly.
“He fell asleep a while ago,” you responded hesitantly. Mando adjusted you in his grip to push a button on his armband, the kid’s pod closing him in, isolating him in his peaceful slumber. The sound of Mando’s boots changed, instead hitting the metal of the ship. The second the ramp was closed in front of you, Mando dropped you back to your feet, but he moved fast. His figure towered over you, pushing you back until you hit the wall of the ship.
“Why are you so fucking stubborn?” Mando’s voice was lower in register, his voice rough but dripping with unspoken emotion. There was a knot tying itself in the pit of your stomach as you looked up at him, a new feeling for your Mandalorian forming deep inside of you. You watched as his visor ever so subtle dropped to your heaving chest, sliding a hand up your side to mess with the necklace he bought you.
“I like pushing your buttons… seeing what makes you go crazy...” you admitted, testing the waters. You couldn’t keep your head on straight, and his visor came back up to watch as you licked your lips, holding the bottom one in your teeth. He stepped impossibly closer to you, one hand still playing with your necklace while the other found your body, caressing your side like he did in his sleep.
“You do, pretty girl.”
