Tinubu Will Wield Monarchical Powers As President Of Nigeria Once Sworn In – Rufai Oseni
Tumblr media
Popular television broadcaster and co-host of the Morning Show on the AriseTV station, Rufai Oseni, has expressed doubt over any possibility of the judiciary nullifying the election of Bola Ahmed Tinubu after he has been sworn in on May 29. This is because the Nigerian president is like a monarchy with unquestionable authority, according to the broadcaster. Rufai made the remarks while appearing as a guest on 90MinutesAfrica hosted by Rudolf Okonkwo and Chido Onumah on Sunday. “Go and read the constitution of Nigeria,” Rufai said in response to the question of what would happen if Bola Tinubu is inaugurated while his victory still faces legal challenges. Speaking further, he said, “The Nigerian president is a monarchy. Once he is sworn in, he assumes monarchical powers. A Nigerian president is like what the Yoruba calls ‘kabiyesi’. You can hardly question him.” The presidential election of February 25, which Bola Ahmed Tinubu won, was fraught with irregularities. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) violated its own electoral guidelines by failing to transmit the polling unit results of the election to the results viewing portal (IReV) in real-time. The candidates of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) rejected the outcome of the exercise and have since filed petitions at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal. Some supporters of the opposition parties have demanded that the president–elect should not be sworn in until the litigation is concluded. The journalist stressed the need for constitutional reforms to check the excessive powers of the Nigerian president. “Nigerians should be active not only about politics but also on matters of constitutional reforms,” Rufai admonished. He said the reforms would ensure that all litigation is concluded before the inauguration of future presidents. Read the full article

A Nigerian poet and literary critic, Prof. Obi Nwakanma, has said that only a fool will take the Igbo people's agitation for a better deal in Nigeria for granted. The professor of literature at the University of Central Florida made the remarks while elaborating on the presidential aspiration of Peter Obi during an exclusive interview in the online interview program 90MinutesAfrica hosted by Rudolf Okonkwo and Chido Onumah. Prof. Nwakanma, who is also a journalist and author, described the Igbo people as the "spine of Nigeria." He said the nation would collapse if we removed the spine. "Anybody who takes the agitations of the Igbo for granted is a fool," he said. He emphasized that Nigeria would benefit from the Igbo ethos of Justice, fairness, and equity if Nigerians elect Peter Obi as president. "I do think that an Igbo as president will offer Nigeria the alternative of the republic ethos which the Igbo embodies. That is the idea that all men are born equal. Everything that constitutes the ethos of the Igbo – justice, fairness, and equity, will become part of Nigeria. This is a fact that we must keep emphasizing, and Peter Obi embodies that." Though Prof. Nwakanma clarified that Peter Obi is not positioning himself as an Igbo president but rather as an Igbo person who wants to be president of Nigeria, he, however, expressed his belief that electing an Igbo person as president will help in foreclosing the recurring question of the civil war which remains one of Nigeria's most critical historical contradictions. Electing Peter Obi as president, the literary critic argued, "would be part of the means of resolving one our most critical historical contradictions to end the civil war formally and to give Nigeria a new lease."

Human rights activist and former president of the Civil Liberties Organization, Ayo Obe says that the 'United Nations Working Group' that purportedly ordered the Nigerian government to release Nnamdi Kanu from detention is not in any way affiliated with the United Nations. The rights activist made the remarks while responding to questions during her guest appearance in the online interview programme 90MinutesAfrica hosted by Rudolf Okonkwo and Chido Onumah penultimate Sunday, NjenjeMediaNews reports. Recently the 'UN Human Rights Council Working Group on Arbitrary Detention" issued a statement indicting both the Nigerian and Kenyan governments for the arrest and extraordinary rendition of Nnamdi Kanu and ordered the Nigerian government to unconditional release him within six months. However, Ayo Obe, who is also a lawyer while speaking during the interview, said the UN does not recognize the group that purportedly made the order. “I have never heard of them. I don’t think they are officially affiliated with the United Nations. Frankly, if the UN is in that business, it is not Nigeria that they would have started with. You would have heard them saying such things before”, the human rights activist said. Ayo Obe further said that if she were the defendant, she would face the case squarely rather than wasting time seeking bail. “In this case of Nnamdi Kanu, there is no issue of the judges being compromised, so I don’t understand why they are still faffing around with bail. If I were the defendant, I would have just gone for broke. Let them bring their case and let me take it on if there is really any case against me”.

Ikengaonline: Salvaging the South-East, By Chido Onumah & Osmund Agbo
Ikengaonline: Salvaging the South-East, By Chido Onumah & Osmund Agbo
Ikenga is the right hand’s alter ego; a horned totem that speaks to the value placed on one’s right hand. In Igbo mythology, the right hand represents the agency and ability to enforce one’s will upon the universe around them. Ikenga means being in control of your fate as you are bestowed with an all-powerful right hand that God used in creating the universe. Ikenga is the spirit of industry,…
