Gurney Halleck centers his entire existence on house Atreides after the death of his sister. His life is devoted to the duke, to Leto Atreides. he loves a man who is at death's door the whole time before his death, and believes to have lost everything after the attack on Arrakis.

So he does what he knows to do, he remembers and keeps his sister close to his heart while he goes to fight with his men. And he knows he will do it until he kills Rabban and avenges her.

Then he finds Paul, who dies too but keeps living, Gurney is being dragged forwards and loyal to a corpse of the boy he knew, an illusion of normality. Then that boy dies entirely walks into the desert and he can't stop it, can't do anything but live on for the dead.

When he meets Leto III, he is watching death march, memories stollen and perverted into an inhuman form and he has to look away. He has to look away and follow Jessica otherwise he is going to lose it. He is going to lose his ability to pretend that he didn't die too the very second the first Duke did.
