“I can’t believe you did it.”

I frowned at Lorekeeper Ihodis Jenro and his comment, then set the gray, box-shaped relic on the desk between us. It was no larger than a loaf of bread. The thing was stained, battered, but despite age and travel, none the worse for wear. At least, that is, for a thousand year old relic.

The Lorekeeper’s sky-blue eyes lit up at the sight of the relic. A broad smile lit up the centaur’s face. He stroked his trim white beard in silence, then nodded. Absently, he tugged at the bottom of his blue vest. It was an old habit from his days as a privateer captain, before the Windtracers. A nervous tick of sorts when he was making a complicated decision.

Ihodis gently scooped up the magic detection device with no small amount of glee. Holding it close, he peered at the inset compass on what I figured was the top of the relic.

“Did what?” I prodded, genuinely curious. “Getting this out of the Obvion Complex in Chivit?”

The older Lorekeeper smirked, eyes twinkling brighter as he peered at me from under those bushy steel gray eyebrows of his.

“Leaping off the waterfall, my dear. Interesting plan.”

I snorted a little at that. Words like ‘plan’ and ‘interesting’ weren’t words I would use to describe cliff diving off a waterfall into the churning water of Kanathi Bay. Especially while being chased by a pack of mercenaries.

“What plan? I was making it up as I went along.” I tapped the end of the relic facing me and grinned. “Anyway, we got it. Vargas didn’t. Even better? I think it might still work.”

Hay lugares con tan bellas vista que generalmente no se va necesariamente por la comida. Pocos hay tan bonitos como el River Café de #newyork y allí y todo brilla más que la cocina. A veces, todo es perfecto como en @aponiente_angel_leon con sus marismas, su fauna marina y sus lánguidos atardeceres. O @ivancerdenolopez que permite ver desde lejos un dorado #toledo más mágico que el de sus calles atestadas de turistas. Entre medias está el restaurante del hotel Villa d’Este, quizá el más hermoso del mundo. Todo para decir que @elcuarteldelmar es uno de esos enclaves de vistas deslumbrantes de mar y dunas de oro abrazadas por gaviotas y flores de colores. En invierno, además se vive la ilusión de estar en una playa desierta, por lo que vale la pena en cualquier fecha. Quiere contentar a todos y su carta tiene buenos productos y preparaciones sencillas. Y como todo sitio de moda que se precie, excelentes cócteles y una carta de vinos razonable con el maravilloso Chardonnay de Chivite -uno de los grandes blancos de #españa- por 75€. El servicio es amable y eficaz, así que no tan mal. Esta vez, ligereza total: aguacate asado con salpicón que es una suerte de deliciosa ensalada, buen jamón, alcachofas con crema de ibéricos (que me gustan más solas porque están buenísimas sin más) y un lenguado excelente que estaba entre los pescados del día. Parrilla bien manejada, bilbaína (que preferí evitar), pimientos de cristal sabroso y una parmentier de patata muy buena pero que no acaba de convencerme para acompañarla pescado. De postre una sencilla y fresca piña asada con helado de yogur y de regalo, esas vistas que alimentan, si no el cuero, sí el alma. Amates 19, 1277. Town of Banye, on the Planus continent, northeast of Ishnanor.

I was covered in soot. Wood smoke, which stung my eyes, was everywhere.

Where there weren’t spots of soot on me, there was grime. I smelled burnt hair, which I think was mine, but I hadn’t had time to check. Overall, I felt like a dusky-skinned Chivit smudge leopard in a bad need of a nap.

The fire, bad as it was, hadn’t spread very far by the time Tyre pulled the Sheldrake into Banye at a hard gallop. One building at the edge of town was already a bonfire, and the one closest to it was smoldering. Kiyosi and I were out of the Sheldrake before Trye had his buffalo team pulled to a full stop.

It took a solid half-hour of hard work to get the fire under control. Banye, like any town, used a fire brigade to haul water by bucket from the ancient fountain in the town square. To my surprise, they also had a small hydraulis pump on a wagon. I had only ever seen those pumps on a ship, and the ones used aboard ship would never work on a wagon.

Tyre and I took turns hauling buckets with the fire brigade, or helping people escape the smoldering building before the flames next door grabbed it. Ki and Evi took turns on the hydraulis pump lever with the Banye locals.

But now it was over.
