Getting To Know...
Christee Palace.
Toronto-based pop artist Christee Palace has released her new single '#1 Girl'. '#1 Girl' is an infectious pop track about being in a relationship with a guy who says that you're his number one but continues to treat you like you are second best. The catchy new single was written by Christee Palace and produced by Christee, Tal Vaisman, and Peter Palazzolo.
Born and raised in Windsor, ON, Christee Palace had a musical upbringing, taking influence from her family of musicians including her father, multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, producer, and teacher Pete Palazzolo. She gained Canada wide success with her debut EP Alive Today.
Now residing in Toronto, Christee has continued to make a name for herself, accumulating over half a million career streams to date, winning the 2019 Jim Beam National Talent Search hosted by Canadian Music Week, and performing at The Indie Awards.
We had a chat with Christee all about '#1 Girl', her creative process and more. Read the Q&A below.
Hi Christee! For anyone discovering you here for the first time, tell us a bit about yourself and what your music is like.
"Why, hello!!  Well, I guess for starters I’m a pop/rock singer and songwriter originally from Windsor, Ontario. I now live in Toronto and I’ve been here for a few years now to pursue my music career. I’ve been involved with music my entire life (I come from a huge musical family back home) and I’ve basically known since I was a little girl that I wanted to do this. My music is definitely pop with a rock edge — all my influences are pop rockers!"
You've just released your new single '#1 Girl'. What inspired the song?
"This song was initially inspired by someone who never put me first, and always made me feel like I was a back up plan, and never worthy of his time. I walked away from that situation very quickly, but I remember thinking that I really wanted young girls who may be going through something similar to have an empowering anthem to help them through it. This is that song."
What is your songwriting/creative process like?
"It varies honestly. I usually come back to the same 5 or 6 ways that I write a song, whether that’s starting with a melody, chord progression, lyric, song title… it’s always different. I find that when it’s something that has really affected me, the lyrics tend to come first, followed by the melody and chord progression to match the emotion. Sometimes I’ll just sing something catchy and end up flowing from there. I love that it’s never the same."
What do you hope listeners take away from your music?
"I just hope they recognize the authenticity. I’ve always wanted to be someone who inspired other young artists, especially female artists. I have always been an advocate for mental health and I find that there are always underlying hints of that in my songwriting. I hope I can make a difference."
What do you have planned for 2021? Any more new music incoming? A video for '#1 Girl'?
"A LOT more music coming, and the MAY be a video... We will have to see…"
