Wednesday, March 15: UFO, “Electric Phase”
R.I.P. Pete Way (1950-2020), Paul Raymond (1945-2019)
Lights Out was only slightly more focused than UFO’s previous two records, but the combination of Ron Nevison’s tight production and streamlined writing on a handful of key tracks, along with the addition of Paul Raymond on keyboards and rhythm guitar was enough to break the band in the US and make some headway in the UK.  As a track, “Electric Phase” wasn’t dramatically different from No Heavy Petting, as it was slightly lurching and vaguely Sabbath with the crunching guitars, but Nevison brought more clarity to the proceedings, and Michael Schenker was getting more confident as a player with each record.  Phil Mogg’s vocals had their usual swagger, but he too hadn’t yet fully developed into the lovable hooligan who frequently punched his way through the late ‘70s. There was a distinct heaviness to the track that stood apart from the band’s most famous material, but “Electric Phase” was full of personality and showed how UFO was building towards their legacy.

When I was 12, my sister was a junior in high school. And when she got a new boyfriend and decided to take him to her junior prom, I tagged along that evening with my mom and grandma to watch the "Grand March". And I was excited to go...my sister was cool and pretty and popular, and I was a kid who loved movies and this was gonna be as cool as going to the movies.
So we get there and there's quite a large crowd packed into that little gymnasium in our little lowa town of just over 600 people.
And my sister's class had chosen Pat Benatar’s "Shadows of the Night" as their prom's theme song. And they began to play it on a loop. And it was amazing.
And as the lights dimmed, we watched as my sister and her date, along with every other prom couple, were first announced by the MC (…to quiet gasps of, "she looks so beautiful" or "they look so great together"...) and then directed to walk down onto the dance floor, where they started slow dancing and swaying to the music.
And on that Spring evening way back in 1983, a little bit of magic happened...it was like we were all running with the shadows of the night...and it was amazing.

Label, Estate: Sinéad O’Connor Would be “Disgusted, Hurt and Insulted” by Fascist’s Use of Her Song
- “We demand that (Rhymes with Fondled Dump) and his associates desist from using her music immediately,” they say
The late Sinéad O’Connor “would have been disgusted, hurt and insulted” by a Florida-based fascist using her music at his cult gatherings, O’Conner’s estate and Chrysalis Records said in a statement carried by Billboard magazine.
“As the guardians of her legacy, we demand that (Rhymes with Fondled Dump), and his associates desist from using her music immediately,” they said.
The “outrage(d)” keepers of O’Connor’s flame issued the statement after learning the twice-impeached former White House squatter who faces 91 felony counts played “Nothing Compares 2 U,” at recent fascist festivals in South Carolina and Maryland.
“Throughout her life, it is well known that Sinéad O’Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness and decency towards her fellow human beings,” it read.
“It is no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil.’”
O’Connor is just the latest artist - including Johnny Marr, Isaac Hayes, Linkin Park, Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, the family of Tom Petty and others - who’ve chaffed at Rhymes with Fondled Dump’s use of their songs.
