Honestly I think the only reason Caboose told Church that Washington replaced him once he went into the ai unit was to make him jealous. Obviously we know that Caboose thinks Church is cooler than all his other friends and all put together they’re not as good as Church so how could Wash replace him?

On top of that we know that Caboose isn’t confused by Wash in the blue armor. Not once does he call Wash Church when we see him.

What this tells me is that Wash was totally willing to go along with this and make Church jealous for Caboose’s sake and that is just very good leadership skills if you ask me. Also it worked.
