I saw a clip from TCW that supports your point about Anakin's training being poisonous to Ahsoka. It's the arc where she gets kidnapped by Trandoshans and meets the younglings also being held there; when she proposes they fight, she says, "My Master would never forgive me for running and hiding in a situation like this."
Like it's not, "My Master TAUGHT ME a different approach to situations like this." Or "I've learned how to fight enemies like this." Or even "My Master would WANT ME to fight."
Furthermore her tone wasn't lighthearted and jokey. So she genuinely seems to think that Anakin would (assuming she's at least being a little wry or hyperbolic) be genuinely annoyed with her for focusing on survival rather than taking the offensive. In general I tend to blame Ahsoka more than Anakin for her attitude (mainly because the narrative depicts her as being right) but I've got to say, that line does seem to indicate that he taught her a lot of weird things lol
Yeah, I've definitely noticed this moment and thought about it a little. In the context of the story and the narrative they present within the Padawan Lost arc, I feel like it's meant to be interpreted more as "My master wouldn't want me to give up hope of finding a way to escape because if you decide something can't be done then it's a self-fulfilling prophecy" rather than "My master would genuinely never forgive me if I did what was necessary for survival." That being said, the actual wording of the line is fascinating because it sends a really weird message when taken a little more literally.
While it's entirely possible Anakin has never once said anything like this to Ahsoka, it still tells us that THIS IS HOW AHSOKA SEES HIM. This is what she's picked up from Anakin's behavior, his teaching methods, etc. And this falls in line with the TOTJ episode where he takes her to do secret training that involves her getting shot at until she falls unconscious for an hour over and over and over again without rest or even medical attention in the name of teaching her how to "protect herself when he's not there." It's ruthless, it's merciless, and it's being excused away with this sort-of toxic attachment for her that Ahsoka, at her young and impressionable age, isn't quite picking up on which leads to her just absorbing that Anakin wouldn't approve of her doing what was necessary to survive if it meant running and hiding. She HAS to stand and fight or she's not good enough. It's better to die fighting than it is to live to fight another day, that's the message Ahsoka seems to be absorbing from Anakin, even if he doesn't always mean to teach it.
We even have instances where Anakin is trying to teach her the exact opposite of this earlier on. In the Ryloth arc, Ahsoka refuses to fall back when ordered and it has terrible consequences, something she has to learn from. In the Holocron Heist arc, Ahsoka refuses to pull back from an attack when ordered because she thinks she has an advantage that she doesn't realize is about to disappear and she gets assigned archive duty for her refusal to listen, something Anakin is upset about. So there's at LEAST two instances where Anakin explicitly wants Ahsoka to "run and hide" rather than stand and fight because it's the better strategy in the moment. It's also ANAKIN who is more insistent about leaving Ahsoka behind for the Citadel mission in order to protect her, too, so it's not like Anakin particularly WANTS Ahsoka to just go running headlong into danger all the time. Which means you could make the argument that Ahsoka is just projecting her own unwillingness to "run and hide" onto Anakin because it sounds better if she says it's her master who wouldn't want her to do this than it does to admit that SHE'S the one who thinks it's beneath her to run and hide.
There's also the comparison to the Geonosis arc where Ahsoka and Barriss get caught in the factory explosion and Ahsoka uses some mechanical tricks she picked up from Anakin to keep sending a signal, just trusting that Anakin will hear it and use it to come find her. Within that same episode, there's obviously the confrontations between Anakin and Luminara where we see Anakin getting BLINDINGLY upset with Luminara for even the implication of "leaving the padawans behind" (despite the fact that that's not what she's actually advocating). Ahsoka refuses to give up on the hope of being found and that faith is rewarded, but it's contrasted against Anakin's almost toxic refusal to even consider the idea that they MIGHT not find the padawans and he has to be ready for that possibility. The Padawan Lost arc has him facing that same possibility and this time, there's genuinely nothing he can do. He has no leads to follow, no signal Ahsoka can send that will reach him, and ultimately Plo has to come in to say that Anakin just needs to have faith that if he's taught Ahsoka well enough, she'll figure herself out and come home to them, and that's exactly what ends up happening.
So if you wanted to be really kind about this, you could say that Ahsoka is projecting some of her own stubbornness onto Anakin and that Anakin is learning his own lessons about trusting in Ahsoka's own abilities over the course of this season, culminating in the Padawan Lost arc. It's not meant to be that Ahsoka thinks Anakin will genuinely be upset with her for running and hiding but that Ahsoka doesn't actually LIKE running and hiding and her partnership with Anakin has allowed her the confidence to refuse to back down until she has absolutely no other choice.
I imagine that this, like in the TOTJ episode, is intended to be a good thing overall. Anakin might be pushing Ahsoka, but he is pushing her to be the kind of person who can survive things nobody else could. The other kids there are all Jedi trained, too, and they don't seem that much younger than Ahsoka herself, which indicates that Ahsoka has a leg up on them SPECIFICALLY due to her training with Anakin and that Jedi training alone isn't good enough. It's Ahsoka's connection to Anakin that makes her great. Which, you know, take that how you will, obviously. It's definitely something we know Filoni pulls on a LOT and is very important in how he chooses to write her.
If you wanted to be a little LESS kind in your interpretation, I do think it would be fair to say that Anakin's own temperament has perhaps... exacerbated the issue, that there COULD be things Anakin has done in his teaching that have led Ahsoka to believe he'd genuinely be disappointed in her if she didn't live up to his standards (again, TOTJ really highlights this aspect of their relationship), and that combined with her own stubbornness is causing her to say what she says in the Padawan Lost arc. If Anakin were able to send her a message, he MIGHT have actually told her to run and hide until he could find her, it seems pretty likely that that's what he'd do, but Ahsoka's interpretation of his behavior seems to be slightly different. So Ahsoka is someone who's very stubborn already before she meets Anakin, yes, but Anakin's way of teaching her makes her even WORSE about this rather than better because even though he does sometimes order her to retreat in battles, he's done other things that indicate to Ahsoka that he wouldn't accept this from her in other situations. That maybe the only reason he was upset in these other instances was because she didn't FOLLOW HIS ORDERS and in the absence of those orders, he expects her to fight as long and hard as she can instead of retreating.
You can of course continue to compare this to his line to her in the film where he says she'd never have made it as Obi-Wan's padawan but she MIGHT make it as his, indicating that she will always have to work for his respect and to earn her apprenticeship with him. I imagine that places some pressure on her as his student, she always has to be THE BEST, better than everyone else, or he might decide she's not worth it after all and decide to just drop her. It might not even be something she actively thinks or worries about, but just something that subconsciously sits with her all the time and invades their dynamic like a disease.
So yeah, I guess ultimately I think that this unwillingness to "run and hide" is a part of Ahsoka's personality from the beginning, I think that it would be very fair to assume that she HAS picked up on Anakin's disrespect for people who "give up" and that this has exacerbated her own stubbornness into something that could be considered arrogant and even potentially dangerous. If we take TOTJ into account, then it's something Anakin has pretty literally drilled into her rather than just something Ahsoka has picked up through his behavior and interactions with others.
And we can take this a step further and look at her behavior in the Ahsoka show and the way this dynamic is almost step for step repeated in Ahsoka's relationship with Sabine. Sabine has clearly picked up on Ahsoka being disappointed in her, that Ahsoka's willingness to train her can and will be taken away if Sabine doesn't act correctly, but that Ahsoka herself DOESN'T FOLLOW HER OWN ADVICE. So this leaves Sabine in a position where she clearly believes she has to work to earn Ahsoka's respect and training but she also knows Ahsoka doesn't even believe half of the things she tries to teach Sabine to do, so why bother following what Ahsoka says. This gives us a Sabine who is a complete and utter brat, whose worst tendencies towards stubbornness and selfishness are exacerbated instead of curbed, and who constantly feels like someone she should be able to completely rely on is always waiting for her to fail. Ahsoka herself doesn't like giving up and will always push a situation further than it needs to go in search of victory, but when Sabine does the same, Ahsoka condemns her for it. It's an immensely unhealthy dynamic and we know EXACTLY where she learned it from.
And while she claims she's going to "support" Sabine later on, she also says she's following in Anakin's own image here, that she's doing what Anakin did for her, which... I know what the show WANTS us to believe, but Anakin did NOT actually support her all the time and Ahsoka probably would've benefited from a master who was more willing to force her to face her own flaws and work on them rather than a master who just brushed aside her flaws so long as they didn't get in his way. Sabine isn't going to flourish under Anakin's type of "support" any more than Ahsoka did and this dynamic would just continue to be unhealthy because Ahsoka SHOULDN'T support Sabine in literally everything she ever does. Sabine SHOULD be told when she's made mistakes and be forced to acknowledge them and work to overcome them, otherwise she's just going to keep acting like a selfish asshole. Anakin passed down more of Palpatine's teachings to Ahsoka than he did the Jedi's, and we see that continuing with Ahsoka and Sabine. This isn't the "disaster lineage" as people like to call it, it's the insidious lineage. It's Sith training making its way insidiously into people who claim to be Jedi, infecting their every choice towards selfishness instead of compassion.

Master Neloth, My spider importer informed me he’d passed through your new tower settlement on his latest expedition to Solstheim. Really, I'm surprised you are still alive. You haven’t made any recent contributions to Tamriel’s scholarship or exerted your once-strong will in Morrowind politics. I therefore presumed one of our national tragedies had carried you off.
I congratulate you on acquiring the elevated title of Arch-Magister of Solstheim. While I was but a mere apprentice to the Keeper of the Tel Naga Archives, I knew then that you aspired to the lofty position of Arch-Magister. Best wishes for future success in your research and the acquisition of your own Council to go with the title,
Tivela Andrethi, Mistress of Tel Galen
Oh, you're one of the Andrethi children. I believe I remember you. I remember your father, at the very least. So, you were one of my archivist's underlings, were you? Given your clear attention to even the most trivial of details, I'm sure you were good enough at your job.
'Morrowind politics', or what's left of them, have nothing to offer me. Our once proud and prosperous House is more concerned with petty territory squabbles with House Redoran and rampant Argonians than advancing our status or growing our influence. Tel Mithryn, while still modest in size, is shaping into a fine citadel. There is far more to the title of Arch-Magister than simply presiding over a council, though I shall make sure to inform you should any positions become available.
You say you have not seen my contributions to Tamriel's scholarship? Perhaps that is simply because they have become so ubiquitous you did not realize that I was the innovator. Tell me, do you have a staff enchanter at Tel Galen? If not, I'm sure you could easily find one at the College of Winterhold or within the walls of the College of Whispers. I've heard that the Imperial army has even adopted them for their speed and efficiency. Though I understand if it escaped your notice that these were of my design.
...
I'm sorry, did you say your spider informed you?

Obi-Wan could feel that something was wrong before he was even told anything. He knew that your latest assignment was paired with Jedi Master Even Piell, one of the Masters that had trained you personally. The two of you had found information about the secret hyperspace lanes called the Nexus Route. He knew that the whole assignment was perilous and important to the Republic, but all Obi-Wan could think of was you as he raced to the war room. Mace Windu, Plo Koon, and Yoda were in there.
“I have sensed that something has happened,” Obi-Wan admitted as he came up to the Jedi Masters.
“Hmm. Stronger than I thought, the bond is between you and Y/N,” Yoda noted.
“Master Piell’s cruiser was attacked,” Windu stated. “We know that at least he and Y/N have been taken alive.”
“Where have they been taken?” Obi-Wan asked. His Force signature was branching out across the galaxy, trying to reach you.
“The Citadel,” Plo Koon responded.
Obi-Wan’s worry grew ten-fold. The Citadel was known as one of the most deadly prisons in the galaxy. No one ever escaped from it. And now you were there, your life endanger.
“I would like to lead a group to rescue them,” Obi-Wan offered, stepping closer to the Masters.
“Yes,” Windu agreed. “You may take anyone who is available that you feel you may need.”
“Thank you.” Obi-Wan bowed before quickly leaving the room. He put his comlink up to his mouth. “Anakin. Come in, Anakin.”
“What can I help you with, Master?” Anakin responded.
“I need you to get down here to the war room. Bring Cody, Rex, Echo, and Fives with you…” Obi-Wan paused, letting out a sigh. “Y/N’s been captured.”
~~~
As you floated in the air, bounded in a tractor beam and waiting for someone to come into your cell and try to push for information, you felt Obi-Wan’s signature reach for you. You allowed yourself, and him, a brief moment of feeling assured by each other’s signatures before you closed him out. You knew that you were going to get tortured and you could not allow Obi-Wan to feel that pain. You only hoped that Obi-Wan could get to you in time.
~~~
Obi-Wan’s jaw clenched as he stood around the holo table in the war room. Everyone he had asked Anakin to bring was there with the addition of Master Plo. He had found your signature alive and it even reacted with his, before you shut him out. That only led him to believe that you were being tortured and you were trying to protect him. Obi-Wan’s need to get to you only grew.
“As you are aware, the Citadel is their most isolated and impenetrable detention facility,” Plo explained. “No one has ever escaped.”
“There’s a first time for everything,” Anakin said.
“Indeed there is,” Obi-Wan agreed.
“Their security has prevented our probes from obtaining recent reconnaissance,” Plo informed, “so we’ve been forced to construct a crude map based upon data from the archives.” He pressed a button on the holo table, allowing the map to show.
“And since the data is extremely old, the map will be difficult to rely on.”
“So we’re essentially going in blind,” Anakin said.
“Beg your pardon, General,” Rex cut in, “but how do we know Master Piell and General L/N are still alive?”
“The Separatists won’t dare kill them until they have what they need,” Obi-Wan answered.
“They obtained the coordinates of a secret hyperspace lane known as the Nexus Route,” Plo added, “which travels into the heart of both the Republic and Separatist home worlds.”
“They could prove vital in maneuvering our forces deep into remote Separatist sectors.”
“Or the enemy could use them to slip through our defenses and attack Coruscant,” Anakin added.
“These hyperspace lanes are of immense interest to both our sides and could tip the scale of the war to whomever is in possession of them,” Plo said. “That is all.”
~~~
Obi-Wan found himself walking between Anakin and Plo down the halls of the Jedi Temple.
“Based on the archive schematics, we’ve narrowed it down to three possible locations they could be holding Piell and Y/N at,” Plo told them.
“My greatest concern is infiltrating their outer security,” Obi-Wan said. It was a partial truth. That was one of his greatest concerns. His greatest was making sure you got out alive. “The life-form scanners will not be easy to fool.”
“I’ve got a thought about that,” Anakin said.
“Master!” Ahsoka called, rushing toward the three men. “I’m sorry I’m late. I just heard about the briefing. We’re going to rescue Master Piell and Y/N, right?”
Anakin paused, folding his arms over his chest as he looked at his Padawan. Plo and Obi-Wan turned back briefly.
“You two have much to discuss,” Plo said before he and Obi-Wan walked away. “Master Yoda mentioned something about a bond between you and my former Padawan, Y/N.”
“Yes,” Obi-Wan sighed.
“Is this a Force bond?”
“Yes. We have had it since we met.”
“Interesting.” Plo was clearly in great thought. “Be mindful of it as you go throughout the rescue, Obi-Wan. The Citadel has its ways of using things against you.”
~~~
You groaned in pain as one of the droids in front of you tased you, again. You had lost track of how many times you had been tased but you did know that each new one was more painful than the last. You wouldn’t let it break you for information though. You were much stronger than that. They tased you again. Once they stopped, your head hung and you panted.
“You are weakening,” another droid stated, coming up to stand in front of you. “You decide when the pain will stop. Just give me the information.”
“I will never give you the information,” you spat.
“We will see about that. Tase her again.”
~~~
In order to bypass the life-form scanners, Obi-Wan’s team had to be carbon-frozen. R2D2 and his team of reprogrammed battle droids were then in charge of flying them to the Citadel. After successfully fooling the Citadel into thinking they were delivering supplies and rations, the droids landed the ship on a ledge of the cliff that the Citadel prison was sitting on. The droids unloaded the frozen team before R2D2 went to each of them and unfroze them.
“Hey, Snips,” Anakin greeted as he groggily walked.
“Hey, Master,” Ahsoka responded.
“I must have carbon sickness because I could swear that’s Ahsoka,” Obi-Wan said, rubbing out his shoulders.
“Your eyes are fine,” Anakin replied. “it’s Ahsoka’s hearing that needs help.”
“I received orders to join the team,” Ahsoka responded. “I thought you knew.”
“Orders? From who?”
“I discussed it with Master Plo.”
“He didn’t tell me.”
“You were already in carbonite.”
“Well, I gave you a specific order not to come.”
“If there’s one thing I’ve learned for you, Master, it’s that following direct orders isn’t always the best way to solve a problem.”
“I see Anakin’s new teaching method is to ‘do as I say, not as I do’,” Obi-Wan teased. “Welcome aboard.”
“This is not a joke,” Anakin continued. “I already have Y/N to worry about and now I have you, too.” He walked away.
“Does he not see that that is the reason I had to come?” Ahsoka questioned.
“Not that I’m happy that you went behind your Master’s back, but it will up to have another hand,” Obi-Wan said. “Help the troopers get ready.”
~~~
Obi-Wan led the way to the building and them up the side of it. Due to the wind and electro-mines on the side of the building, they had to free-climb their way up. As they climbed up the side, Obi-Wan got to the entry point first. He was going to jump onto the platform when four droids came out. Holding onto the ledge, he hid beneath it and signaled to the others to keep quiet. Once the droids had left, a shield came up in the doorway.
“They locked the door!” Obi-Wan exclaimed. “It’s ray-shielded!”
“Ray-shielded?” Anakin questioned. “That wasn’t the plan!”
“Well, it’s in the plan now.”
“There’s an opening up there,” Ahsoka stated.
“We know,” Anakin responded. “They’re ventilation ducts, but they’re far too small for us to gain access.”
“Too small for you, maybe, but I think I can squeeze through.”
“Well, we hadn’t planned on Ahsoka being here,” Obi-Wan admitted. “Perhaps she’s right.”
Anakin gave Ahsoka a nod, signaling to her that she could do it. Ahsoka hurried up the side to the vent. She opened the cover and slid in as the others waited outside along the cliff. Once the ray shield was down, they hurried onto the platform.
“See? I can handle myself after all,” Ahsoka commented, pointedly at her Master.
As the clones followed the Jedi onto the platform, Charger lost his grip and fell. He fell into one of the electro-mines on the way down. The alarm began blaring throughout the building.
“Well, they know we’re here,” Obi-Wan said, a slight sadness at the thought of the clone who had just died.
~~~
Your heart was beating rapidly as they finished tasing you again. You weren’t going to give up the information that they wanted, but you were close to putting your shields down and feeling Obi-Wan’s signature. If just for one last time.
“Maybe a different tactic is needed,” one of the droids said. “Perhaps you wouldn’t mind losing an eye.”
The droid‘s limb reached up toward you, revealing a long needle. You tried to move your head away from it as best as you could as you squeezed your eyes shut. Suddenly, the door slid open and shots were fired. You opened your eyes to see clones rushing in and behind them was Obi-Wan. Tears of relief filled your eyes as the clones took care of the droids and Obi-Wan came straight to you. He pressed a button that released you, easily catching you as your weak body fell.
“I’ve got you,” he whispered, holding you close to him. You couldn’t tell if he said that as a comfort to him or comfort to you because as you fell you let your shields down, allowing his signature to grasp onto yours. “I’ve got you…”
“Obi-Wan…” you breathed out, gripping onto him.
“Y/N!” Anakin exclaimed, rushing into the room. Without thinking of Obi-Wan, or even you, Anakin pulled you into his arms. “I’m so glad you’re okay.”
“Me too, Ani.” You pulled away and noticed Master Piell in the doorway. “I didn’t give them any of the information, Master.”
“I knew you wouldn’t,” he responded. “We need to find my captain and get the other third of the data.”
“Right—woah…” You had taken a step but your leg gave out beneath you. Obi-Wan quickly had an arm around your waist, holding you to him.
“Are you alright?” He worried.
“I’ll be fine. Just a little weak.”
“You will stay by my side, alright?” You nodded, okay with not arguing with him on that. “Let’s move.”
~~~
Cody led the way down the hallways, peeking around every corner and signaling if it was okay to move forward. Obi-Wan hadn’t been kidding about you staying by his side. He knew that he could not physically hold you there but his side was constantly brushing yours. Suddenly, attack droids surrounded you on either side. The clones aimed at them as you Jedi ignited your sabers. You and Obi-Wan immediately got back to back, ready for a fight.
As soon as the droids began firing, the Jedi began deflecting and the clones began shooting back. You quickly realized that these were not normal droids. These droids were doing jumps and flips to get closer to your group. Once the droids were close enough, they began physically assaulting. One of them grabbed your neck so hard, that you knew that there would be bruises there later. You grunted as you swung your saber through the droid, cutting it in half. It wasn’t long until all the droids were destroyed.
“We need to keep moving!” Obi-Wan said.
Keeping your sabers ignited, you all started down the hall again. You all suddenly stopped when a high-pitched sound started. Your weapons and anything else made of metal, snapped up to the ceiling as you plugged your eyes. This, unfortunately, included Anakin as his arm was made of metal.
“Anakin!” Obi-Wan shouted over the loud noises.
Electricity crackled as Anakin began to be electrocuted.
“Master!” Yelled Ahsoka.
“Ani!” You cried.
Once the round of electricity had stopped, Anakin’s body hung limp. A burst of laughter sounded through the speakers nearby.
“You fools!” A voice taunted. Droids rushed in on either side of the group. “I hope you enjoyed the reunion with your fellow Jedi because you’re going to be my guests for a very long time!”
You and Obi-Wan glanced at each other, thinking the same thing. With your backs against each other’s, you threw your arms out and tried to use the Force to push the droids away. The droids slid back but their feet didn’t lift from the ground.
“They’re magnetized,” Obi-Wan stated.
You both used the Force again to try and keep the droids away. The clones rushed forward and started fighting with the droids. As this was going on, Anakin fought through another surge of electricity to reach his lightsaber. He took it and turned off the magnetic ceiling, dropping himself and the weapons to the ground. You and Obi-Wan easily caught your sabers and destroyed three of the droids. Once the droids had been taken care of, Rex helped Anakin off of the floor.
“Are you alright, sir?” He wondered.
“Yeah,” Anakin answered. “Let’s get out of here.”
~~~
When you finally reached where they were keeping the remainder of Piell’s men, Anakin and Ahsoka easily took out the droids that were guarding inside the cell. Piell entered the cell, his men standing.
“General,” one of them said.
“Captain Tarkin,” Piell replied.
Though you worked with him on this last assignment, you couldn’t help but feel the tinge of darkness that was in Captain Tarkin. Throughout the assignment, he had proved nothing but a man willing to help the cause. But that didn’t help the way you felt about him.
“I never thought I’d see you again,” Captain Tarkin said. “General L/N.” He nodded toward you. “You brought friends.”
“Tarkin, this is Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker,” Piell introduced.
“Well, now that you’ve found us, how do you expect to get us out? If they’ve locked this fortress down, there are at least ten squads on their way. It’s going to be impossible to escape.”
Obi-Wan’s hand came up to his beard as he thought. “What if we split up?” He asked. “My team will create a diversion, while Anakin leads the others away. That way, if one of us is captured, the enemy will only have part of the information and not all of it.”
“General Kenobi, I think it’s better if we stick together. A stronger force would have a better chance of protecting the information.”
“Not in this situation.”
“But surely we’d have more strength in numbers, rather than divide us.”
“Obi-Wan has a point,” Piell cut in. “I’ll go with him, you go with Y/N and Skywalker.”
Obi-Wan turned to you. “You must go with Anakin,” he said. You went to argue but were cut short at his plea through the Force. “Please, my dear. You being part of the diversion will only increase your chance of getting hurt and my heart can’t take you getting hurt more than you already have.” You sighed and nodded in response. “Thank you, my little star. Stay safe.”
“Please stay safe as well, Obi,” you responded.
His lips quirked up slightly. “Always am.”
Obi-Wan met your eyes briefly for one last time before leaving the cell with Master Piell following behind. The clones were split up between the two groups as well, for safety. You turned and looked to Anakin for directions. He was actually surprised that you weren’t heading the charge but you were tired and didn’t know the original escape plan as he did.
“Alright, everyone, follow me,” Anakin directed.
~~~
Anakin, Ahsoka, and yourself had your lightsabers ignited as you followed Anakin around the Citadel. After running for a while, Anakin stopped to look at the hologram map on him. He suddenly turned to the wall and cut a circle out.
“Everybody in,” he ordered.
Echo and Fives went up to the wall and pushed the cut-out way so that the group would be able to crawl through the hole. It led to outside in one of the canyons. Ahsoka jumped out first, running down the ledge to see if the path was clear.
“This is one of the original fortress tunnels,” Echo stated.
“The advantage of old archive data,” Fives added as everyone else came through the hole.
“The tunnel’s clear!” Ahsoka announced.
“Looks like Obi-Wan’s distraction worked,” Anakin said. “Things seem to be going as planned.”
“It’s when things do not go as planned that concerns me,” said Captain Tarkin. “When then?”
“It’s when things don’t go as planned that we Jedi are at our best. Trust me.”
“I really hate how true that statement is,” you muttered.
“I reserve my trust for those who take action, General Skywalker,” Captain Tarkin retorted.
“Then let me remind you, we rescued you back there,” Anakin said. “And I reserve my trust for those who understand gratitude, Captain Tarkin.”
Echo and Fives placed the cut-out back in its spot as Anakin began leading the group forward. You walked in a line down the path. Anakin was in front with Captain Tarkin behind him, Ahsoka behind the Captain, and you behind the Padawan. The rest of the clones with you were behind you.
“R2, are you and your battle droids ready to go?” Anakin asked for his comlink. R2 quickly replied. “Alright, get the ship fired up, we’ll meet you at the pipeline exit after you’ve picked up Obi-Wan, assuming he’s still on schedule.” He ended the transmission.
Your brows furrowed as you sensed Ahsoka’s thoughts. You hadn’t been trying to read her thoughts, it just happened. You picked up the pace to get as close as you could to her.
“Be mindful of your thoughts, Ahsoka,” you warned in a whisper. “They betray you.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ahsoka responded.
“You weren’t supposed to be on this mission. You snuck into a carbon-freeze chamber and joined the others. Then you lied and said that Master Koon had approved it. So, when I say that your thoughts betray you, I really mean it.”
Ahsoka grunted in frustration, pushing forward until she was in front of everyone. You clearly had made her mad, but she needed to be careful before Anakin could sense her thoughts. Anakin moved his way to the back of the pack, sensing something. As your group made their way through a tighter spot in the tunnels, Anakin jumped up between two of the walls. You could sense a probe droid coming. Everyone had made it through the tight spot by the time the probe came over. Anakin jumped down from his spot, cutting the droid in half with his lightsaber.
“I am beginning to admire the design of this fortress,” Captain Tarkin admitted. You added that to the list of things off about him. “It’s rather formidable to evade.”
“How can you admire such a horrible place?” Ahsoka questioned.
“Ah, you reveal your short-sightedness. This ordeal only demonstrates how effective facilities like the Citadel are. Pity, it ended up in Separatist hands and not ours.”
“I will agree with that,” you said. “If it was in our hands, we wouldn’t be in this situation.”
“Alright, Snips, I need you to lead the group,” Anakin said. “Keep following the tunnel. I’ll catch up.”
“Why not Y/N?” Ahsoka asked.
“Y/N doesn’t know the plan. You do.” You sent a disapproving look Ahsoka’s way.
“Where are you going?”
“Obi-Wan’s not here, so someone has to protect our flank.”
“Be safe,” you told him.
“I guess it’s a good thing I came along after all,” Ahsoka said cockily.
“Don’t get ahead of yourself there, young one.”
Ahsoka glared at you before going to the front of the group. She began leading you through the tunnel.
“I am concerned that the Jedi have elected this child to lead the group,” Captain Tarkin said quietly to Rex, you overhearing it.
“I’ve served with her many times and I trust her, Captain,” Rex responded. “General L/N is also here and will be able to quickly formulate a plan if needed.”
Ahsoka turned a corner and stopped short. “Uh-Oh,” she said, looking up. You all followed coming face to face with a cliff. “Dead end.”
“So, what’s the plan here, Ahsoka?” You pointedly asked.
She studied the surface of the cliff, debating her options.
“Look out!” One of the clones shouted, shots being fired from incoming droids.
You and Ahsoka spun around and began deflecting the blasts with your lightsabers. You deflected a blast perfectly causing it to boomerang back to the droid, hitting it, and forcing it back into the lava in the lower canyons. You moved to destroy the others when Anakin jumped down from higher up and cut the other two droids in half. He slowly backed up as more droids began charging.
“What happened?” He asked. “Why didn’t you blow the wall? That part of the plan was your job!”
The droids had shields and were cornering you into the dead end as they fired at you. Anakin and yourself were in the front of the group, trying to deflect as many blasts as you could.
“I thought it was a dead end!” Ahsoka replied.
“If Master Plo really assigned you to this mission, he would have briefed you on the plan,” Anakin said.
Ahsoka quickly took Rex’s backpack full of detonators and ran back to the wall. She placed them all over the surface of the cliff. With two of them, she ran back and rolled them underneath the droid's legs, causing an explosion. The detonators on the cliff wall behind you exploded as well causing chunks of the cliff wall to rain down. You all were thrown to the ground. You groaned in pain at the harsh impact.
“Little star,” Obi-Wan’s voice filled the Force around you. “Are you alright? I felt some pain from your end of the bond.”
“I’m fine,” you responded. “Just wasn’t prepared for an explosion on either side of me.”
“Explosion?! Is everyone okay?”
You pushed yourself up to check your surroundings. “We’re good. Keep focused on your end and we’ll do our best on ours.”
Anakin came over and helped you to your feet before leading the group through the large blast hole in the wall. He led the group through another tunnel until you reached a large vertical pipe.
“This pipe leads up to the top of the ridge,” Anakin explained, “where R2 will pick us up and get us out of here. There’s the hatch.” He jumped up to the nearest edge of the pipe and helped everyone else up before leading to the hatch. He opened it and Ahsoka led the way in. “Let’s go! Let’s go! Everyone in. Don’t use your lights, and make sure your weapons are locked. The slightest electronic pulse could ignite this whole tube.”
“I hope somebody tells the droids that,” Captain Tarkin commented.
You stood beside Anakin as the Captain entered the tube. “I’m not a huge fan of that guy,” you said before going into the tube.
The tube was not pleasant to breathe in as you climbed and walked along it. Ahsoka was taking the lead, having too much energy for your liking.
“How much longer are we going to wander through this tunnel in the dark?” Captain Tarkin asked, clearly agitated.
“Captain Tarkin, haven’t you learned to trust me by now?” Anakin responded.
“You may have earned my trust General Skywalker, but my faith in your comrades is still lacking.”
“You lack faith in the Jedi.”
“I find their tactics ineffective. The Jedi Code prevents them from going far enough to achieve victory. To do whatever it takes to win. The very reason why peacekeepers should not be leading a war. Have I offended you?”
“No. I’ve also found that we sometimes fall short of victory because of our methods.”
“Well, I see we agree on something.”
“Our methods are not without cause,” you argued.
“I think I found a way out,” Ahsoka announced. She led the group to a ladder and opened up the hatch at the top of it.
“What do you see, Snips?” Anakin wondered.
“The coast is clear.”
“Any sign of Obi-Wan and the shuttle?” You asked.
“No, I don’t see him or R2 anywhere.” Ahsoka went out further to only be aimed at by droids. She jumped out and cut them in half with her saber. “We’ve got to go!”
“There could be a whole battalion of droids out there!” Tarkin exclaimed.
“Better than hiding in a fuel line,” Anakin said.
Anakin went up the ladder first with you right behind him. You could see that droids were coming at you from one side of the pipe and quickly joined Ahsoka in fighting them off. You, Anakin, and Ahsoka deflected blasts as the other climbed out of the tube and off the other side of it. You all ran and hid behind a rock.
“The plan’s been compromised!” Tarkin exclaimed. “The shuttle’s not coming!”
“Throw me a charge!” Anakin ordered, Rex quickly following through.
Anakin set it to detonate before throwing it into the pipe hatch you had climbed out of. The explosion happened fast. Your group crouched further down to hide under the rock more as large shards of metal rained down. Once it had calmed, Anakin stood up and dusted himself off.
“Let’s go,” he said. “Time for plan B.”
“There’s a plan B?” Tarkin questioned.
“There’s always a backup plan, Captain,” you responded.
“We’ll meet R2 at Obi-Wan’s position,” Anakin said.

My Archive Of Our Own Wrap-up
I wanted to put together a thank you to all the fanfic writers who have gotten me through this year.
This wrap-up is me going through my history month by month to see which fics I'd visited the most (because you can be damn sure I read through them over several days).
So this is a celebration of the wide variety of fics I've read and/or bookmarked and/or subscribed to. Thank you to every writer on this list for keeping me entertained.
My first fic of 2023: Finding the Balance, by Amberlioness
Tumblr media
Summary:
Events following ‘Bound’, leading up to ‘Demons’. Trip and T’Pol begin to explore what their bond means and how it affects them. Follows “Beginning in Earnest”. I’ve tried to keep as close to canon as possible, while filling in events and back story as the muse commands.
2023 in fics I kept returning to by month
January
Brand New Day, by cecilyjones
Star Wars Rebels, rated T. Completed 2023-03-29.
The Force wasn’t the only great power in the Galaxy. There were also the laws of physics. Kanan was strong in the Force, but the bind he had gotten himself into had to do with physics. (My inevitable “Kanan lives” story. He survives, and the story unfolds from there. Some of it resembles the story we already know, and some of it doesn’t. The ripples travel out.) Update: Chapter 1-8 is a complete story, you can stop reading there and get some nice closure. After that, I’m just kind of adding as I get ideas. Mostly I just like seeing Kanan get to be a dad so that’s what I’m doing. Thanks!

Synced To You, by TuppingLiberty
Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, rated E. Completed 2017-04-09.
Canonverse but Omegaverse: Though everyone can choose whomever they want as mate, your one true mate, the mate with which you 'sync', is your one best match in the entire galaxy. Poe recognizes Finn as his sync-mate immediately, but Finn is reluctant - extremely. Chapter 3 and various chapters thereon are explicit. This fic is now in epilogue-mode. Everything after Chapter 13 is epilogue. I will come back to it as it pleases me, which, right now, is often. :D

So he did something either incredibly bold or incredibly stupid. He took one big step forward, closing the gap in between the two of them, all of the oxygen turning so heavy it felt like lead in his lungs. There was always this strand of hair, no matter how she chose to wear it, that untucked itself and hung over her eyebrow. He loved to watch it when she wasn’t looking; he loved to see how it shone underneath the neon lights of the Citadel, how it bounced with every word, how it danced away to the side of her face when she raised a single eyebrow in confusion.
He took the strand of hair on the back of his talons, tucking it behind her ear. Fuck , what he would give in that moment to not be wearing his gloves. He wanted to feel her skin, to really feel it knowing that it was Shepard’s. He wanted to rub her hair between his fingers and feel each individual strand. He wanted her face to fall into his hands, he wanted to trace his talons down the lines of her face, to touch the soft skin of her lips--
“Whoa.”
Garrus finally snapped out of it when she spoke. As if her voice was a bucket of ice water, he stepped back, dropping his hand from her face, shivering violently. He could tell she was trying to meet his eyes, but he refused to look up, seeing as he would likely either pass out or pass away.
“I-- sorry, I didn’t mean--” he stammered out.
“You’re… you’re fine,” she said in an odd sort of voice.
“I’m just… shit , zero sleep, y’know--”
“Yeah. I get it,” she said, her face so red that it was nearly purple. “Except I don’t think that human girlfriend of yours would really appreciate that.”
“My what?” Garrus asked, completely thrown back. Human girlfriend? Didn’t she understand by now that was her? Surely she had to notice how he looked at her…

FFXV Fic: The Winding Road
So this is the road trip fic I've been toying with. It's kind of a self-gratifying thing, but I've gotten into some really fun road trip shenanigans with my found family over the years. I decided to paint a few of them onto the Older!Chocobros and Lunafreya.
NGL, the holidays are poor mental health months for me and this year my found family is out of the country on long-awaited vacations. (First time since the Covid Nation Attacked)
Majorly afraid this is boring, but it's fun for me to roll around in fun memories.
Excerpt:
“I also can’t help but feel,” she stumbled over how she wanted to word the next concern. They’d promised each other honesty. No more trying to hide suffering or pain to spare the other. She wanted to marry this man. Desperately. She awkwardly offered, “The focus on the wedding is misplaced?” Noctis had the infuriating audacity to chuckle faintly, but what he said next gave her pause, “Specs and I had that conversation. He suggested it’s an escape to fantasy and gives people hope.” She supposed she knew that subconsciously, but it felt somewhat like a revelation all the same. It didn’t help her feelings of entrapment, however, “But what about us?” “We try my idea for the dessert table?” Noctis then playfully blew a wet raspberry on her neck, making her involuntarily yelp and giggle like a young girl. He’d been feeding off Ignis’s sense of humor lately, so she knew he’d find a bad pun for anything she said to that statement. She refused to take the bait. “Incorrigible! That’s what you are!” “Well, you’ll have to corrige me. Wait, is that a word?” A rare laugh as she pressed a palm to her face, followed by a nearly purred, “Or maybe that’s encourage ?” She rolled her eyes, despite being inwardly amused. Someone had to play the foil when the bad jokes and puns began.
The Dawn: The Winding Road
Chapter 1: Fishbowl Living
Noctis Lucis Caelum — King of Lucis, periodic adventurer, occasional hunter, and groom-to-be — dropped onto his couch with a grateful sigh.
He was done for the day. As in, well done. Stick a fork in him. But at least the couch he was trying to become one with belonged to him and Luna, located in their apartment in a building they owned. It was a good feeling on a regular day, and it was doubly so on a busy day like today. He still had reports to go through and a few papers to sign before he could call himself genuinely done for the day, but all that work could be completed from his couch.
With a heavy sigh, he concluded Thursdays shouldn’t be allowed to be this obscenely busy.
Though, frankly, he had barely been released from the hospital before the demands of the crown had come knocking. The guys were absorbing and deflecting as much as they could, but what they couldn’t was still overwhelming. His mornings seemed to start earlier each day.
Lunafreya needed to meet Iris every morning for their training sessions. He wasn’t fully recovered and able to walk on his own when Gladio decided he couldn’t cover two active monarchs. (At least not with his sanity intact.) So he broke with Amicitia tradition and named Iris the first female Shield in recorded history. The Queen and Queen’s Shield needed time to get to know each other and learn how to work together.
After seeing her off, Noctis dove into a virtual meeting with Prompto and the team of experts he’d hired to survey the crater formerly known as The Crown City of Insomnia.
The news, predictably, wasn’t great. It was going to take decades to clean up and rebuild. Prompto’s photographs left nothing to the imagination: Insomnia had all but been wiped off the map. The crater was just the city’s cadaver and the Citadel ruins was its grave marker.
To begin, there was just one bridge in and out of Insomnia, and it badly needed repairs. Considering the city’s former function, having few gates to protect made perfect sense from a strategic standpoint. However, it was an absolute logistical nightmare. It made the already remote corner of the continent even more. The long-destroyed Keycatrich Bridge and Boral Bay Bridge would need to be rebuilt, followed by the seaports.
Then, before even the work of clearing the debris could begin, Crestholm Channels would need to be repaired or rebuilt. Much of Insomnia was technically at or slightly below sea level. Rain threatened to drown the Crown City every spring and fall, and Crestholm was built to control that flooding. However, it had taken heavy damage from Teraflare. And, due to damaged structural and mechanical systems, there was a not-so-remote chance that a good storm might cause a sewage overflow right into the channels and reservoirs that served not only the Crown City but much of Leide too.
Which led straight into his next meeting: Making Lestallum the new, official capital of Lucis.
It made far more sense, especially since Insomnia’s original purpose no longer existed. Lestallum was centrally located on the continent, more or less equal distance from the rest of the Lucian outlands. The walled industrial city had grown larger and denser with each year of darkness, encircling almost the entire meteor crater. Now that the Long Night was finally over, there was no shortage of interest in the former Aracheole Stronghold area.
As for the power plant itself, Teraflare seemed to have done something good. Initially, the Meteor of the Six and its many shards had been the source of Lestallum’s power. Now, it seemed a geothermal “hot spot” had formed deep under Lestallum’s water-filled crater. With a permanent, renewable solution at hand, the power plant could be gradually converted to an actual geothermal power plant well before it ran out of meteor shards.
Everything considered Lestallum had everything necessary to function as the new capital.
From there, Noctis posited that each province would require its own regional government plus representatives for his new council.
He knew it would be controversial and expected it to be a bit polarizing. He may have been profoundly immature back then, but he distinctly remembered how adverse to change and mired in tradition people had been during his father’s reign. He mentally prepared and told himself repeatedly that any adverse reaction would be strictly knee-jerk. They couldn’t wait decades for Insomnia to be rebuilt. He rehearsed statements such as, “You wouldn’t drive a car exclusively looking in your rearview mirror!”
To his shock and amazement, the opposite occurred. His proposal had not only been well-received but was proving to be popular. He had been ready to desperately expound, not at all believing what he was seeing, but Ignis’s hand on his arm had stayed his tongue.
While it was a pleasant surprise, it hadn’t been the outcome he’d expected. He was left feeling agitated and uneasy from the pent-up stress. He felt distinctly out of touch. Ten years in the Crystal and he didn’t know his own kingdom anymore. He felt like he was waiting for the next shoe to fall, but, that particular “shoe” didn’t exist to fall. He’d desperately needed the next few hours of therapy and training with Gladio to blow off that nervous energy.
Then in the early afternoon, he ducked out of another meeting regarding material shortages in Tenebrae early to pick up Prompto’s daughter, Calanthe, from school. Now “Uncle Noct” and “Aunt Luna” were on-duty until Prompto got home. Which added “child care” to today’s long adventure.
Calanthe was a good kid, but even good kids could be a handful sometimes. She was the definition of ‘rambunctious.’ She had a scream that Noct swore could melt solid steel. At times willful and frustratingly insistent on her independence; at others, she was clingy and needy. Situational incompetence and overblown emotional outbursts were typical. She often acted younger than her age – apparently, all symptoms of trauma and stress.
Which was something Noctis understood all too well.
The girl had been born shortly after he entered into Reflection and had grown up in a world without sunlight. A place of high walls and confined spaces. At the tender age of eight, she was kidnapped with her family, orphaned, and soon after, infections claimed her arms from the elbows down. Immediately upon her recovery, she’d begun preparations for an eventual set of Magitek prostheses.
Then she’d lived in protective custody as a ward of the Kingsglaive, and her world contracted even further to the strict confines of a safe house. It was no way for a child to live, but not knowing if she was still in danger, there was little choice.
Fast on the heels of her adoption, the completed Magitek prostheses were fitted and activated. The prostheses were designed to be unobtrusive, mimicking the size and shape of her natural arms as much as possible, and lovingly painted to blend in with her skin, complete with freckles. And then, she had to begin physiotherapy all over again as she learned how to function with her new, artificial arms. He had no doubt she dealt with pain and discomfort; he recognized the signs.
It was little wonder why she was often so bratty. That would have been a lot for even an adult to go through. Though even if he could relate, it was, frankly, exhausting.
He had her settled to work on her homework on the coffee table beside him while he went over the reports Ignis had dropped off for review. While he had always appreciated what Ignis did for him, having to do the same for Prompto’s daughter, even for a day, gave him a new perspective. It was hard keeping her focused and on-task.
Noctis’s phone buzzed and pinged with the incoming text message tone; from the kitchen, Luna’s did the same. He only spared the screen a glance. It was from Cor, using Kingsglaive security euphemisms.
All he could do was inwardly groan. Probably another paparazzi was finding out his security detail still meant business, even if security outwardly seemed lax. He only received the alerts if they felt he needed to be made aware.
For a saving grace, he had decided during his recovery that they needed a place of their own. He frankly had missed his old apartment and the freedom and privacy it offered.
The first hitch in his plans was that there were some serious security considerations regarding where the King and Queen of Lucis could live. His initial choices had been vetoed on those grounds alone. The second was that Lestallum was old. Not as old as some of the towns and cities across Eos, but nothing aside from the power plant had been built with any degree of security in mind. Most of the industrial city had been built hurriedly to accommodate the various population booms over the years, often without much regard for planning.
The solution came when word reached him that the leaders of the Accordo Protectorate were returning to Altissia. During the Long Night, Accordo had acquired several buildings in Lestallum as temporary government seats and housing. One of those was a small, four-story apartment building with a security checkpoint on the ground floor. Rumor was they planned to sell it.
Deciding luck favored the bold, he had approached First Secretary Claustra during one of their meetings. They eventually agreed that Lucis would pledge their full support towards the rebuilding of Altissia, and Accordo would likewise assist Lucis, including the new royal residence. (Of course, she made an obvious point to remind him they were still hosting his wedding. There was an unspoken implication he probably owed her for that too.)
To keep his advisors and Cor happy, he hired a former Royal Guardsman and semi-retired Kingsglaive, Vesper Decimus, to be his building’s security. Even in his sixties, Ves was a force to be reckoned with. To further sweeten the deal, Noctis offered the veteran a free apartment. All Ves needed to do was walk downstairs, and he was at work.
So Noct and Luna had their own place, and it was secure enough to keep everyone happy. It also allowed Noctis to get Prompto and Calanthe out of that crappy studio apartment and into something much nicer.
Ves responded that he was “looking for work.” Another euphemism. The phrase actually meant, “searching for additional threats.” If Ves was responding, that meant it happened downstairs. Whether he wanted to or not, he needed to find out what was up.
He realized Calanthe was looking up at him, her eyebrows raised.
Noct looked into those earnest violet eyes and smiled. She was a clone just like Prompto, though she only possessed roughly sixty percent of his DNA. Those genes were dominant, however, and the resemblance was always a bit uncanny for him. Her facial shape and eyes were subtly different, but the expression was straight out of his memories when Prompto was her age.
“Do me a big favor?” He whispered conspiratorially. “Can you check on your Aunt for me while I make a call?”
— — — ⌖ — — —
Lunafreya had had a long and emotional day.
She was feeling drained, but every time she slowed down too much, her emotions got the better of her. So she was distracting herself in the kitchen, cleaning and taking inventory of their pantry. Despite her fatigue, the act of cleaning was surprisingly soothing. If not for Noctis and Calanthe needing to focus and concentrate, she probably would have spiraled out into the other rooms.
It still seemed a bit surreal to need to manage her own living space. The luxurious lifestyle of her gilded cage was a thing of the past. Their apartment was modest, but kempt. They had no servants, cleaning staff, or even a personal chef. Ignis came over frequently enough their kitchen bore his distinct organizational style and they kept accessible cooking tools for his use, but his presence wasn’t constant.
For the freedom and the way the space didn’t feel like a prison, she was willing to accept the changes.
If there was anything she truly yearned for, it was the days she could find ingredients to make her favorite tarts easily. But even for a King and Queen, food was still rationed, and fresh fruit in the amounts necessary for the tarts was prohibitively expensive. If nothing else, she craved something sweet, and they didn’t even have chocolate.
Her day had started early, as it always did now. First was training with Iris, recently appointed as her Shield. Immediately after training, she and Iris walked Calanthe to school. After a brief pause to shower and dress, they were onward to a whirlwind of meetings regarding the wedding and specifically for the bride. Much of it had been planned ahead of time, but so many things had changed in the intervening decade to complicate the logistics.
For example, the dress patterns and notes had been located, but then there were the specific fabrics, notions, and embellishments that would need to be sourced. Then there were the undergarments to ensure it all laid correctly and her shoes. And then extensive fittings at each step because no matter what, her body was different than it was ten years prior.
Calanthe stepped into the kitchen, her snack plate and empty glass in hand. She started to put them in the sink. “Dishwasher, if you would, please,” Lunafreya mildly directed.
In the grand scheme of things and compared to everything she had been through, she realized all these things were only a minor inconvenience, but at that moment, it felt monumental.
She could fight daemons and mutated beasts, but she couldn’t fight a planet that had been brought to the brink of death. She couldn’t give everyone enough to eat with a speech. Couldn’t perform a ritual to restore people’s homes. The many new diseases brought on by ten years of darkness combined with dense living conditions couldn’t be cleansed with magic of the Oracle.
And she was fretting over a wedding.
Through abruptly hot, damp eyes, she idly wondered how Ravus would have solved these issues. Had the Empire not torn her family apart, how would he have dealt with all this? What would her mother have done?
“Aunt Luna?” Calanthe asked, the child’s voice catching in her throat. “Are you okay?”
Lunafreya wasn’t expecting her heart to leap like it did at being addressed as “Aunt.” Calanthe wasn’t even reliably calling Prompto “dad” yet, although she was slipping more often. He still partially held the role of a “grown-up friend” who was “kind of like a dad.”
Prosthetic arms, advanced civilian models similar to the military issue arm Ravus had come to wear after his attempt to command the Ring of the Lucii, wrapped around her. It was still a bit like watching an old stop-motion animation, the motions still slightly uncanny and mechanical. Her brain was still unused to the interface between her real nerves and the artificial ones in her prosthetics.
Had Ravus experienced this when he started wearing his arm? He hadn’t really spoken of his injury in the time he was secretly aiding her. His arm had been burnt to ash, surely he must have experienced some of these side effects and would have known how to cope.
She gratefully returned the embrace, holding her tightly. She stroked the girl’s hair and absently tucked an errant lock that had escaped the braids she had made that morning back into place.
Calanthe released her and asked once more, “Are you okay?”
Luna wiped the tears from her eyes and tried to force her voice to behave, “I’m fine. I had a long day. It’s quite all right to cry during times of stress, I assure —“
“Uncle Noct!” The blonde girl bayed in a voice like nails down a chalkboard, “Aunt Luna is crying!”
“Oh, Callie,” Luna murmured under her breath before she could stop herself, caught at an odd intersection of amusement and exasperation.
Noctis, of course, immediately got to his feet and crossed the living room. “Keep me posted,” he said into the phone and hung up without waiting. His priorities shifted as though with the flip of a switch.
“Luna’s crying,” Calanthe repeated unnecessarily when he drew close, though thankfully at a much lower volume.
“Thanks, I’ll take it from here,” Noctis replied with an easy smile and a hand on the child’s upper back. “Why don’t you take a break from homework? Play a game for a bit?”
Prompto’s daughter obeyed, leaving them alone in the kitchen. (Though Luna didn’t miss the lingering look back at her.)
She heaved a sigh as his arms encircled her from behind, his lips pressing softly into the nape of her neck just the way she liked.
“What’s wrong? Thinking about Ravus again?” His breath caressed her ear, warm and sweet in his sincerity.
“If only it were just the memories of my family haunting me,” Luna sighed again, closing her eyes and leaning against him. “But yes, and my mother too,” and then she hesitated. Worried her lips, unsure of how to express how trapped she felt.
She was the Oracle, Princess of Tenebrae, and soon-to-be the Queen of Lucis. She answered to no one. Her voice was powerful, and if it wasn’t powerful enough, Noctis was quick to elevate her. Her agency was armor-clad. She had resources few others possessed.
However with the wedding date less than a year away, the world had rediscovered its appetite for royal gossip.
As royalty, they were no strangers to media attention. There had always been a fascination bordering on obsession with their lives. What they wore, who they had been seen with, dating, sex, politics — it had always been on the menu. Even Lunafreya, despite living in what was essentially an opulent prison, had not been spared. Though that had been heavily focused on her duties as the beloved Oracle.
However, even after an apocalypse, the Lucian media was relentless and often took it to the extreme. An extreme she was struggling with.
Theirs was a very physical relationship and not just from a sexual perspective. Trauma had a tendency to linger. Ten years of deprivation of all stimuli save magic had left its mark on Noctis. Thus, they both found themselves needing physical contact and reassurance to stave off bouts of intense anxiety. Luckily, they had each other, and Noctis’s “brothers” all understood they were still recovering. But it was yet another item for gossip: They can’t keep their hands off each other!
Even their recent trip to a toy store to buy a present for Calanthe’s upcoming tenth birthday had been covered exhaustively. The speculation of why the Royal Couple were seen at a toy store had run rampant. Could it mean an heir before the wedding?
A catchy, upbeat song began to play from the living room punctuated by cheery sound effects. Dissonant to the turmoil she was feeling.
“I feel trapped,” she finally admitted in scarcely a whisper, the words brittle and wavering. “Like we’re specimens on display.”
“Yeah,” Noctis agreed, swaying slightly with her still held in his arms. “Same here. Can’t decide if we’re living in a fishbowl or petri dish.”
Lunafreya nodded her agreement.
“I also can’t help but feel,” she stumbled over how she wanted to word the next concern. They’d promised each other honesty. No more trying to hide suffering or pain to spare the other. She wanted to marry this man. Desperately. She awkwardly offered, “The focus on the wedding is misplaced?”
Noctis had the infuriating audacity to chuckle faintly, but what he said next gave her pause, “Specs and I had that conversation. He suggested it’s an escape to fantasy and gives people hope.”
She supposed she knew that subconsciously, but it felt somewhat like a revelation all the same. It didn’t help her feelings of entrapment, however, “But what about us?”
“We try my idea for the dessert table?” Noctis then playfully blew a wet raspberry on her neck, making her involuntarily yelp and giggle like a young girl.
He’d been feeding off Ignis’s sense of humor lately, so she knew he’d find a bad pun for anything she said to that statement. She refused to take the bait. “Incorrigible! That’s what you are!”
“Well, you’ll have to corrige me. Wait, is that a word?” A rare laugh as she pressed a palm to her face, followed by a nearly purred, “Or maybe that’s encourage?”
She rolled her eyes, despite being inwardly amused. Someone had to play the foil when the bad jokes and puns began.
Acting on an impulse, Luna lifted her smartphone once more and brought up the weather app. She could feel her fiancé lean further into her to gaze over her shoulder.
Typical autumn rain and thunderstorms were on the way for Lestallum for the weekend. Full days of rain in Lestallum meant sustained high humidity. But Leide was going to have absolutely gorgeous weather for the next few days. No humidity. No overwhelming heat and blazing sunlight that would make her skin feel like it was actively cooking.
Noctis would be happy being a hermit for the weekend. Lunafreya, however, felt as though the walls were closing in.
The idea they should leave for a few days and take a break in Leide was intoxicating. Get away from the “fishbowl,” as Noctis had put it. Shake off the paparazzi, gossip, and their constant royal escorts. Just the two of them, alone, in the tranquil desert and prairies.
Those weeks she’d spent traveling alone across the Lucian continent to forge the Covenants had been the freest she’d felt in twelve years. Oh, how she had loved those limitless blue skies.
“We should try to get away. Just us.” The suggestion tumbled over her lips like an avalanche, “Go on holiday like a normal couple.”
“Ignis will kill us, and Gladio will help hide our bodies,” Noct muttered into her hair.

Operation: Stonefire - Part 1
[The first part of a series of notes and recordings, from different sources, regarding a certain military operation near the height of the Greater Caucasian Conflict, fought between the Imperium of Syraqhanistan and the Russian Federation].
===
[Source 1: A digital archive copy of a recording made during a Russian military briefing.]
Recording starts:
<Noise of cogs starting, signalling the activation of recording equipment.>
“Eh, sir? You think that’s the best idea?”
“No, frankly I don’t tovarisch polkóvnik - but I have my orders, and I do not believe it wise to question them.”
“…Very well.”
“…”
<Awkward cough.>
“I’ll… take that as my cue to begin?”
“Yes please, before we all die of boredom.”
<A more light chuckle from a group of people.>
“Well. I shall do so at once.”
<Sound of a whiteboard being turned on.>
“My friends, we have gathered here today at the behest of a direct order from the Security Council to the chiefs of staff. They believe, in their infinite wisdom…”
<Another laugh.>
“…that a single decapitation strike against the heart of our southern enemy will cause a swift end to the war.”
“Ehhh, I don’t know about that Colonel! I swear the final act of Jupiter was also supposed to be a decapitation strike? And we, uh, know how that one turned out!”
“Comrade Sergeant, please don’t jinx us. *Especially* since we’re being recorded!”
“Sorry boss.”
“…Anyway. This operation is, as you can see from your compatriots in the room, one of the utmost importance, and will feature some of the most talented members of our nation’s military.”
<A cough; the archive notes attribute it to the one who created the recording, a Major-General [REDACTED].>
“Ah, yes. There will also be a… certain new addition, which might be a little odd to some of you who usually don’t have high level clearance.”
“I’m assuming you’re referring to… them?”
“Indeed. These five children are, in fact, members of the elite Task Force 776 - chernyye orkhidei, or <<Black Orchids>> - which was created under the supervision and express orders of both the Security Council as well as the joint heads of the FSB and the FSO. The two males are One and Two; the three females are Three, Four and Five. Do not ask for their real names, as they do not have them; and fear not - they are the best of the best. Don’t think that they’ll get in your way; nay, try not to get in theirs! And, uh, that’s all I’m allowed to say on *that* matter.”
“…If you say so.”
“I do. It’s not like I have a choice on the matter either, you know.”
<Tap of a remote control.>
“The name of this operation has the codename of Stonefire; it will be fought in conjunction with Operation Seahorse, which will be an Air Force operation at high altitude against the enemy’s vast satellite array.”
“…Satellite array?”
“Indeed. As this diagram shows, if in somewhat excessive detail, the vast majority of the enemy’s capital is almost saturated in various anti-personnel and anti-air capabilities; however, these capabilities - as seen from a leaked classified source - largely rely on a satellite array in low Earth orbit to relay almost atomic accuracy to the defences. This defence system would probably be bolstered by the Weather Dome System, had it been completed before the war broke out - but luckily that won’t be an issue.”
<Another tap of a remote.>
“As such - Seahorse will eliminate the satellite array, giving Stonefire - us - a time window to infiltrate the city and enter the enemy’s headquarters. This time window will be VERY limited, as the defences do have the ability to act without the satellite array, but to do so requires a small window of recalibration. Upon reaching the headquarters - the newly Palatial Estate built above the old Kirkuk Citadel - we will breach the inside using the maps that have been distributed to you, make our way to three given target zones, and achieve our objectives. Upon completion of all three objectives, we will be given an armoured escape transport by local resistance members, and escorted safely to a separate city to the location of a safe house and await exfiltration - which, all going smoothly, will be done following our nation’s victory.”
“Why not have a safehouse within the city?”
“Major, please look at the briefing before asking questions! Still, that’s part of the next slide, so I suppose I will address it.”
<Remote click.>
“There are three primary objectives of Stonefire: the first, and most critical, is the capture OR elimination of the Council of the Nation, held in the core of the Estate: it is the highest level of government in Syrakhanistan, including their nation’s enigmatic leader. The second is the capture, or destruction, of certain materials related to their nation’s military, which is held within their nation’s defence department, closer to the front of the complex. The final target is a certain room in the deepest heart of the Estate complex - the city’s power plant. The team on the third target will be the last to leave, as their mission will be to plant a nuclear weapon - identified as RA-115-02, codename Lime Daisy - and detonate it once all objectives have been achieved and all members safely outside the Area of Operations.”
<Sudden silence.>
“…So, this is a suicide mission then?”
“Well, no—”
<Clattering of chairs and slamming of desks.>
“YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING”
“THIS ISN’T SERIOUS”
“THAT’S INSANE”
“Alright, that’s enough. Comrade General, please turn off the recording - and get the MPs in here!”
“We really should have done this bette—”
<Stuttering of recording cogs mixing with the growing sound of shouting.>
End of recording.

[Source 2: An extract from a personal note-taking document made by an unknown source within the government of Syrakhanistan.]
The device in front of your little group stopped with a small click. You find yourself suppressing a smile, as another one of your friends begins to laugh.
“Well, that’s bloody unprofessional, isn’t it!” She said with an almost gleeful grin.
“…I see that the Bear is just as overly ‘practical’ as ever, even in this day and age. I suppose I can’t fault their… enthusiasm…” The woman opposite her noted with an almost smug sense of satisfaction, not that you would ever tell her that. “And you’re sure of the veracity of this?”
You nod. “Positive. You wouldn’t believe what some people post online these days; it only took us a few hours to find and extract it. From the notes attached, I’d say we have about a month or so - and, of course, we’re still keeping our eyes and ears out for any changes to that schedule.”
A murmur of approval.
Your senior nodded, before scowling just a little. “Still… Russian or not, this seems rather, shall I say, ballsy? Are they already truly that desperate?”
A chuckle from your left. “You’d be surprised. As I said in one of my more dry reports, it would appear that their logistics… Well, I think I can safely assume that they lost most of their supply managers during the Soviet-Afghan Wars, or perhaps in that cockup in Chechnya, because what I’ve had reported to me is… almost impressively stupid, frankly.”
“Yes… I suppose I’m more inclined to believe that, than to believe that they have some sort of ace up their sleeve. I will admit, a nuclear device would be… annoying… to our city’s nascent construction bureau. Oh, and let alone the citizens.”
“Still. Still, still, still. Can’t be too careful, eh, hee hee!” The girl to your right gave a hearty laugh.
“Indeed. Obviously, feel free to eliminate the pests when they arrive - and do feel free to be gracious hosts when they do so. Might be fun to let off some steam, especially since this place is [REDACTED][REDACTED] for [REDACTED]. Right?“ Your boss nodded confidently.
You clear your throat. “I think that would be for the best, not that they would be any trouble. If anything, I’d be more worried if they had any [REDACTED] with them, since that could cause some strife.”
Your boss shook her head, but smiled anyway. “I see your point - but I’ve already done some previous digging into that little group one of them mentioned, and none of them are [REDACTED]. So I’d say they’re all expendable - at most, maybe capture one of them for [REDACTED] so that we can [REDACTED].”
You salute, and turn to leave with your friends, until a familiar sensation hits you. Everyone in the room, save one, freezes as the same sensation hits, and the room gains an extra inhabitant.
A yawn, a stretching of small limbs, a tired shake of a battered old thing. You never could get used to that one; for all of them being like little things, this one felt far more different to the others, even your own former [REDACTED].
“Warmaster. One of the members of this… opposing force… that you discussed. It is of interest to myself and the others.” [REDACTED][REDACTED] purred, a dulcet and relaxed voice completely at odds to the rest of the words’ demeanour. “I would request that [REDACTED], the one that I make reference to, is kept alive, so that a more firm decision can be made.”
Your senior’s face showed no emotion, and nor did her voice. “I see. How interesting. Why… Why could you not meet her directly? And would she be suitable for—”
“I could not, simply because I just could not, or perhaps would not. That is all there is to it, and all that there is to it is what I think of it. And… well, for your last question, I won’t know until I’m certain, and I won’t know until I’m certain until I know I am certain. Certainly, when I have made a decision, I’m sure you can also give your advice, ideas, or plans to me as always.” Another pleasant intonation, followed by a small shrug. “It’s just a small thing, honestly. I do hope it’s not too much of an issue.”
A nod. “Of course. I will do my best to ensure that your needs are fulfilled. Praise be.”
A small breath, before a sigh and another shrug. A small noise like a puff of air, and then…
The room lost the extra inhabitant.
It’s a little quiet, a bit awkward for a few moments, before there’s another sigh.
“Fucking dickbutt rat cat.”
Yeah, you said it boss. You said it.

Part 2 will be released shortly.

After-Action Archive Phoenix Point 1st Gig - Pandoran Citadel
Welcome, one and all, to the After-Action Archive! I've been writing and posting these up in Discords I'm part of, and in the interests of archival and having easier access, now that I have a Tumblr I'm putting them up here with some edits and extra information where I feel necessary. Bear in mind, these are nowhere near plentiful enough to count as a full LP, but consider it a sort of highlight reel. With that in mind, let's start things off.
I had just finished off a Base Defense, the first I'd done, and finished it handily. My squad handled well, luring the enemies to a choke point where we could take them apart as needed. After repelling the attack, I realized that I had managed to trace their attack route back to their base.
Now, to explain this, the Pandorans launch their attacks from hidden bases, which have a chance of being revealed after the attack is repelled. Once it's revealed, you have a shot at going there with a squad and destroying it. If you leave it alone, it continues to launch attacks, so it's usually best to take care of them as soon as possible unless you're trying to game the system by farming haven defenses for free resources.
Anyway, that's beside the point. These bases can be divided into three tiers. Nests are the smallest, and are claustrophobic affairs wherein the task is to kill the Hatching Sentinels, large fungoid towers that control the eggs within the nest. Nothing too difficult, though enemy reinforcements are infinite. Lairs are far larger and more open, and the task there is to kill the giant but immobile and non-aggressive Spawnery and then evacuate your crew.
The base attack, however, came from the largest kind of base, a Citadel.
A Pandoran Citadel is almost as open as a Lair, but with huge impenetrable walls sectioning the map off into various "rooms". Sort of like the Lairs, you have to kill a central creature and then make your escape. Unlike the Lair, though, you're not attacking an immobile, passive Spawnery.
No, no, you're fighting a Scylla.
Tumblr media
This motherfucker is gigantic, even bigger than your APCs, clad in enough armor to shrug off all the but most determined attacks, with enough HP to count for an entire squad of soldiers. It's fast, too, and deals almost instantly lethal damage with its aptly-named Smashers. On top of that, it can spawn Mindfraggers, buff allies with the Frenzy status which ups their mobility and makes them immune to panicking, and the map itself is subject to the same infinite reinforcements as the other Pandoran bases.
So…fighting it isn't particularly pleasant, as you can imagine.
Still, there's no other way out but through, so we have to gear up for the plunge.
Roll Call
Tumblr media
The squad I deployed for the Base Defense was still ready for combat, so I prepared them for it. First was Lilian Courtenay. She's one of my more recent recruits, but is getting to be an old hand in her own right. A Sniper by trade, I cross-trained her as an Assault to give her a mix of mid-range firepower and proficiency with, among other things, handguns. Her usual kit here is just a regular full suit of Odin-class Assault armor, Phoenix Project original, a Medkit, a grenade, and two guns. Her main weapon's a Bulldog Gauss assault rifle from the right-wing libertarian New Jericho faction, a decent overall weapon with slightly more armor-shredding capability. The second, as you'll see often in this squad, is a Hera-class paralyzer pistol from Synedrion. Paralyzers are important because sometimes paralyzing an enemy is much easier or more advantageous than killing them, and taking live captures can be beneficial to scientific research. Overall, this is a pretty basic generic loadout for my soldiers, with some variations here and there.

This here's my OG of OGs, Sophia Brown, the short-haired redhead you see on the box art. Also trained as an Assault/Sniper hybrid, she also happens to have the Biochemist personal ability, which gives her weapons the ability to inflict Virus damage, which hurts enemy willpower and can force them to panic. To capitalize on this, I've got her with an Iconoclast-class shotgun from the Disciples of Anu, the third faction, which is a radical transhumanist religious order. For backup, she's got another Hera-class pistol for paralysis, and I recently started outfitting her with a Deimos-class Synedrion assault rifle for high-accuracy shooting. That Samnu armor she's wearing is unique, a living suit of armor cultivated by a Phoenix Project mad scientist before the fall. I also attached a special module to the helmet that dispels any clouds of Pandoran mist nearby her and thus renders her immune to its effects (saps willpower, immediately reveals her to all Pandorans). A fast mover with lots of damage to bring.
-----------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Irina Sokolova is another OG (and another Sniper/Assault hybrid), and I've got her set up for multi-range combat as well. A Phoenix Project Ares-class assault rifle for effective mid-range combat, a Synedrion Pythagoras-class sniper rifle, and another paralyzer pistol. I've currently got her wearing a mismatched suit of armor (Phoenix Point Banshee-class sniper armor for her head and body, but Synedrion Phlegethon-class armor for her legs). She focuses more on range than the previous two, but she can rumble up close just fine as well.
-----------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Citizen Eileen was sort of a loaner from Synedrion, the pilot of a recovered Manticore that they gifted to us early on, but she's stuck around. Another Sniper/Assault, she has a personal ability that gives her proficiency and extra accuracy and damage with Shotguns, so in addition to the Pythagoras sniper rifle, I also gave her a Phoenix Project original Slamstrike-class shotgun. It fires single slugs instead of a spread, but it hits hard nonetheless. She's wearing a full suit of Synedrion Acheron-class sniper armor.
-----------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Last one in the original squad is Noel Charles, one of my newer recruits. He's an Assault, but his hybrid class is one I learned from Synedrion, the Infiltrator. Emphasizing stealth and sneak attacks, it focuses on reconnaissance and well-placed mayhem. Aside from the stealth-boosting Synedrion Styx-class armor, though, I've got him kitted up with a Synedrion Eros-class crossbow for silent and action-point-light shooting and a Bulldog assault rifle for when he needs to go loud.
-----------------------------------------
Tumblr media
Since I had a Manticore available, I had room for one more person in the squad. In addition to the squad who had defended my base, I brought in another of my OGs, Omar Ashour. A Heavy/Assault hybrid, I have him equipped with a Hel-class autocannon, a scavenged Disciples of Anu sword, and a couple of grenades, plus a full suit of Golem-class Phoenix Project heavy armor. For this mission, I added a New Jericho Fury-class mounted missile launcher, which I figured would help me even the odds a bit and shred more armor for cheap.
-----------------------------------------
So, with the team assembled and delivered, I started out cautiously, as per my usual. For the first round on missions, I usually advance a bit and overwatch every likely attack lane and see if I can get some clue in which direction I should push.
Turned out, I got a very concrete clue almost immediately, because the Scylla thundered out of the central chamber, saw us, and rallied several Arthrons and a Siren to its side. A Siren is…troublesome. A lamia-esque creature with a centipede-like tail for locomotion, two bladed arms, and the capability to mind-control my soldiers repeatedly, it was immediately bad news, on top of the Scylla being right behind it.
Since it was closer, I focused fire on the Siren first, aiming first for the head to disable it and thus its mind control abilities. I was thankfully able to punch through its armor rather handily and finish it off before it could do anything, but the Scylla would not be going down so easily. I took an experimental potshot at it with Noel Charles's crossbow, and I discovered, to my delight, that the first time the Scylla is hit each round, it responds by creating a huge cloud of mist around it, conveniently obscuring any support units nearby, though it's too big for even the mist to hide, itself.
(Note: it was not to my delight at all)
I was undaunted, however, and started by seeing what I could do about that armor. I was glad beyond words that I brought the missile launcher along, as it proved its worth in just two shots. The first shot rendered a just-birthed Mindfragger useless (its head and therefore its only method of attack was disabled in one go) and hit one of the Arthrons hard enough to make it easy pickings. There were a couple of other Arthrons about, and while they posed the same amount of trouble (little), they did distract my attention from attacking the Scylla. We finished most of them off just in time for me to watch the Scylla charge at Sophia Brown with a house's weight of flesh, carapace, and hatred, bringing its smashers down, instantly disabling her torso, and almost killing her outright.
Looking back, I am reminded of that meme.
"You taking a swing at me? Better make it count. Better make it hurt.
Better kill me in one shot."
Because the Scylla did not in fact kill Sophia in one shot (it did hurt, though), I still had a chance. Thanks to her helmet-mounted Mist Repeller module, she could stay near enough to the Scylla to make her shotgun actually matter, and this was important for one vital reason. Virus damage. As a refresher, Virus damage is bestowed by certain weapons as well as the Biochemist personal skill, the latter of which Sophia Brown has. For every projectile she fires that hits the enemy, it adds one Virus count to the target, and this in turn is used to attack the opponent's willpower. If the opponent loses all of its willpower, it uncontrollably panics and runs for its life.
Thanks to two shots from her shotgun (ten projectiles each shot), I landed 23 (20 plus a few left over from an earlier long-distance shot) Virus damage onto the Scylla, which at first I'm unsure of re: its effectiveness.
And then I see that the Scylla uses all of its action points to Recover half of its willpower. Which is less than the amount of Virus damage it was taking.
Surging with hope, I continued to hammer away at it, mostly at its Mindfragger-birthing abdomen, using Sophia to basically stunlock it. It takes a huge amount of time and ammo, not counting what I had to use to fend off stray Arthrons coming in, but with no retaliation from the mini-kaiju, it eventually fell. I then had Sophia lead the way to the exit, her Mist Repeller Module letting her clear the path, though I also took a detour to pick up some resources in a nearby room. My crew did end up taking fire from a freshly-arrived Triton (basically a four-armed fishman that can wield guns and drain HP, sometimes turn invisible or spawn mist), but nothing Sophia couldn't rectify with bullets. I sprinted for the exit and make it there handily, with some extra items in tow to boot.

Loreposting about Abaddon
Abaddon doesn’t get a lot of attention. As a deposed god he doesn’t seem relevant to the Guild Wars timeline after Nightfall. But I keep thinking about him because Abaddon is probably the most influential character Tyria ever had.
Tumblr media
Let’s just go over where he appears in-game if you start off in GW2. Everyone knows the six human gods. They’re in statues, temples, personal shrines everywhere. The base game story makes you detour through a sunken temple dedicated to Abaddon, while the Orrian temples to the other five gods are still intact on the surface. This is not by chance. It’s also nudging you to notice that there are no Orrian temples to Kormir, because she replaced Abaddon only two centuries ago. This is reflected again later on in Siren’s Landing on the other side of Orr, where the Five, and Abaddon, each have a personal reliquary, and Abaddon’s is central, connected to all the others, and still intact.
Building on that refresher on human divinity, in Path of Fire you visit the actual place Abaddon was defeated by the other Five gods and pushed into a side dimension to keep him out of the world.
Tumblr media
And when you visit the archives of the Durmand Priory, they have an imposing Abaddon statue towering over the stairs. Other than being reflected in three major environments, he doesn’t have a role in the plot. BUT.
As Kormir explains to you, the weakness of the human gods is that their excess of power keeps fucking up the world. The Desolation, a map that covers only a part of the sulfur desert, is completely uninhabitable because Abaddon was destroyed there. This happened because Abaddon, who was actually the most powerful of the Six and the leader of the group, wanted humans to share in the gift of magic. He was the god of knowledge, after all. This proved disastrous and the other gods reduced and compartmentalised the magic, and Abaddon went on a whole attempt to overthrow them and become one, single god of all.
The destruction of Abaddon’s temples and relics was intentional. He was wiped from memory. The pantheon was called The Five until Nightfall, wherein the existence of Abaddon was revealed as he tried to drag himself back into the mortal plane. As a god his spheres of power were water and knowledge. Erasing knowledge of him was what made him powerless. (Interestingly, the Priory’s special collections contains the Scroll of the Five True Gods, an ancient record of what the human gods knew about the Elder Dragons, but one dragon is missing - the water dragon, who like Abaddon, has a damaged and erased history. The six Elder Dragons and six human gods have many respective connections.)
Tumblr media
When he lived, Abaddon’s followers were the Margonites, who believed him the only real god and worshipped him exclusively, unlike other humans who revere all the Six together. They were rewarded with transformation into etheral beings with an extremely long lifespan, and were imprisoned in Abaddon’s Realm, the Realm of Torment, when he was forced out of Tyria. As the god of knowledge he had a realm to himself, and when fallen, his sphere inversed. Knowledge became madness, the theme his realm embodies. Temples were sunk, records destroyed, because to remove all knowledge of the god of knowledge made him powerless.
Tumblr media
I can’t remember where, but it’s implied that by Nightfall comes around a thousand years after his banishment, Abaddon is finally able to claw his way back into Tyria because people are starting to remember him. There’s one side quest that sticks out in my memory called The Search for Enlightenment about a scholar stealing scriptures from an Elonian library which leads to a massive raid by Margonites. The scholar was ‘babbling’ about a forgotten god. Proximity to knowledge about Abaddon seems to bestow insanity, the connection between Abaddon in his inverted realm and his hold over anyone who knows he exists. Though the Five Gods tried, they didn’t erase everything (hell, Trahearne and Sayeh al' Rajihd give you a guided tour of an Abaddon temple). Over a thousand years, relics popped up and people began to remember The Five was once The Six. As they did his influence returned until he was able to attempt to merge the Realm of Torment with Tyria and become a single, all powerful god in the absence of the others.
But wait how does that make a forgotten god the most influential character in both games?
Well.
Guild Wars lore is nothing if not completely linked together. Every single thing has cause and effect, every event is a domino. The story is consistent from Prophecies to this day. So let’s start with the first GW1 chapter, Prophecies.
Tumblr media
It all starts at the Citadel of Flame.
It was built into the volcano Hrangmer. The charr had been displaced, pushed out of Ascalon by the successful expansion of humankind. 450 years before GW2 the Flame Legion found this volcano and, inside, Titans. You know how Mordremoth’s minions are Mordrem, Zhaitan’s minions are Risen, etc? Titans are Abaddon minions, left behind and hidden after his defeat. They change their appearance to suit their environment. In a jungle they’re vegetative, in mountains they’re made of ice, in the Realm of Torment they’re twisted constructs of flesh, in a volcano, they’re fire. The Flame Legion brings the Titans back to the charr, charr worship them, and in exchange, get immense fire powers. Flame Legion completely takes over charr society and makes it a theistic, misogynist nightmare with the Shamans at the top.
Abaddon has just restructured charr society.
Using their overpowered fire magic indirectly from a human god, charr, ironically, rally against the humans and nuke Ascalon to pieces. The few survivors escape to Kryta. Charr are now pretty much unstoppable and invade all the way to Orr. Vizier Khilbron used a powerful stolen scroll to repel the charr with magic, and it completely destroys Orr, collapsing the island into the ocean.
Abaddon has just wiped out two nations of the humans who used to worship him, with Orr as the final goal - to tear down the resplendent city of the Gods who betrayed him. This is referenced, if you know what you’re looking for, in GW2. You can scale the Vizier’s Tower, where he read the scroll that sank all of Orr, and on the wall...
Tumblr media
A mural to the lost god, a testament to power that, a thousand years later, one who was expunged from history had a faithful likeness depicted.
Ascalon’s a burning hole and Orr is underwater. Now what? Those Ascalonian survivors in Kryta find the place is controlled by White Mantle. The White Mantle are committing mass murder via bloodstone sacrifice (bloodstones being the power curb the gods introduced after imbuing humans with magic) in order to halt the prophecy of a Chosen One opening the Door of Komalie. Vizier Khilbron turns up, shaking out some mysteriously wet boots don’t worry about that, and leads you against these genocidal cultists. Which, whoops, does lead to the Door of Komalie being opened - and it’s a doorway into Abbadon’s Realm of Torment, out of which Titans power through. This was the apocalypse planned for Kryta. Unlike the first two, this one is thwarted by the player. Kryta lives on. Vizier Khilbron is the final boss and turns out to have been a lich.
That’s 3 of the 5 human nations. What about Cantha and Elona?
Tumblr media
GW: Factions is the Canthan chapter in which Shiro Tagachi, the emperor’s bodyguard, continually visits a fortune teller until she inflicts such paranoia on his mindset that he believes he needs to kill the emperor in self-defense. His defeat causes the Jade Wind that creates the Jade Sea. As a spirit, Shiro then engulfs Cantha in a plague that warps people into tumorous mutants. The fortune teller turns out to be an Abaddon minion whose task was the eventual destruction of Cantha. This one also is foiled by the player.
GW: Nightfall is the culmination chapter. Abaddon is now powerful enough, well known enough, to breach Tyria and try to come back. His agent is Varesh Ossa, who slowly transforms into a Margonite over the course of the game. The player confronts the breach between planes and finally enters the Realm of Torment, meeting the shades of Abaddon’s servants that came before, the lich form of Vizier Khilbron, and the spirit of Shiro Tagachi, before facing Abaddon himself.
Tumblr media
And that’s the end of it. In Guild Wars magic cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred, so another god ascends in Abaddon’s place. They are once again The Six.
It’s Abaddon that ruined half the Elonian desert, Abaddon whose sinking of Orr gave Zhaitan the perfect mass grave to necromance, Abaddon who froze the Cantha sea into solid jade, and Abaddon whose final death and eruption of magic started waking Primordus, leading to the norn, dwarf and asuran alliance to stop it in 1078 AE-- introducing the norn and asura to the rest of Tyria, and making the dwarves extinct, cutting their entire race’s existence short. If it wasn’t for Abaddon, the charr wouldn’t have been taken over by their magic-toting shaman caste, only to come to their senses and rebel and ostracize the Flame Legion afterward. Hell, the current Flame Legion Imperators STILL style their horns in an homage to Abaddon, and probably don’t even remember why! To a human god, gone for over a thousand years, who used their race as pawns in a revenge attempt at wiping out every nation the humans had built!
Tumblr media
And even after being thoroughly and completely destroyed, his magic STILL haunts Tyria enough for his statues to punish you for not showing the proper respect.
