Finger Lime (citrus australasica), the Australian finger lime or caviar lime, is a thorny understorey shrub or small tree of lowland subtropical rainforest and rainforest in the coastal border region of Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. Finally got some fruit this year. They really don’t seem to like growing in containers because the few REALLY hot days we get each year cause them to drop their fruit. I can see why they call it caviar, the little balls of juice pop in your mouth. The tangy sour lime flavour is great with savoury dishes as a garnish. 😁 #fingerlime #citrus #citrusaustralasica #fruit #caviar #green #mygarden #springflowering #myplants #homegrown #australiannatives #australiannative #australiangardens #australiangarden #australian #tangy #bush #edible #spikey (at Belmont, New South Wales, Australia) https://www.instagram.com/p/CdaO24CPo3b/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

What Are Finger Limes?
What Are Finger Limes? Finger limes, sometimes also referred to as Australian finger limes or delicacy limes, are a citrus fruit of the species Citrus australasica, a range of microcitrus that are believed to have actually advanced over millions of years in the rainforests of Australia and also New Guinea.
Finger limes are small fruits, generally gauging 2 to 3 inches in size as well as evaluating as low as 10 to 15 grams each. Shaped like little pickles or cucumbers with ends that taper to factors, finger limes are most frequently a purple or blackish dark eco-friendly, though they in some cases look like light eco-friendly and even brownish-red. The skin of the fruit is rough as well as pebbled.
But it is what’s inside finger limes that makes them unique. When cut open (they can additionally be broken in half) they expose a wide range of small spherical vessels, varying in shade from light yellowish-green to virtually pink. The lats two citrus trees have arrived.
The red Finger Lime is really tiny. The man I bought it from barely started growing them from cuttings, but I really wanted one and he’s the only one I could find who has this variety. As long as it grows, no matter how slowly, I can be patient. It’s also one of the few citrus trees I have grown from cuttings, most are grafted. It doesn’t look very good right now, I kicked the pot by mistake and almost uprooted it, but I hope it’ll get better. Not a good start, but we’re not going to let that get us down.
The red Mexican Lemon on the other hand is a lot bigger and even has a couple of flower buds on it. I was advised to enjoy them bloom and the fruits grow a bit then pluck them off cause these variety lemons get quite big and it’d be a strain on a young tree. We’ll see if I can make myself do that. Or maybe the tree will drop them on its own.

That Boutique-y Gin Company (3)
That Boutique-y Gin Company (3) - the final trio of #gins from ~BoutiqueyGin and their Retro Gin Fridge tin
Strawberry flavoured gins, I find, are too sweet for my taste and so I tend to give them a wide berth. If nothing else, a pairing with balsamic vinegar seemed too intriguing to ignore. Setting my prejudices to one side, I sampled the miniature bottle of Strawberry and Balsamico Gin in my Retro Gin Fridge Tin from That Boutique-y Gin Company, a brand of Tonbridge-based Atom Brands. The vinegar…

Finger Limes loving the shade - Citrus australasica
My friend has the magic touch when it comes to growing all things edible and so of course her fingers limes are abundant in the Autumn 🤩. She has two varieties one is Citrus australasica ‘Rainforest Pearl’, a grafted form. Which in my humble opinion is the sweetest and juiciest of them all and the other is the straight species Citrus australasica.
Citrus australasica ‘Rainforest Pearl’
And the crop this year on the ‘Rainforest Pearl’ was out of control at around 6kg, unfortunately I was a little too late with my camera to capture the plant when it was really ladened with fruit. But still every branch is heavy with big juicy fruits which fall in the wind.
The image above shows the size of the shrub in relation to my medium sized naughty dog😉 It is growing under the shade of a large Callistemon and receives only a few hours of morning sun.
Citrus australasica ‘Rainforest Pearl’
The tree is well mulched and the soil is reasonably fertile although nothing special. I do honestly think the secret to its success is the position, it mimics the natural environment where fingers limes would normally grow, as an understory plant in the rainforest.
Citrus australasica
The second finger lime lives on the south side of a wall at the bottom of a slope, it is dense and luscious and makes a beautiful screen and bird habitat plant.
Citrus australasica
Its fruit are shorter and a little more astringent but it also produces exceedingly well over Autumn.
Citrus australasica
Needless to say I am very jealous of both of these plants, they not only provide an excellent harvest but they also look good too. It makes me think it is high time finger limes were utilised more for their ornamental value in the garden. They make great screening shrubs for covering ugly fences or walls and also can fill a difficult dark corner with bright shiny green foliage.
Citrus australasica ‘Rainforest Pearl’
And perhaps by planting them simply to look good it might in some strange contrary way encourage them to fruit as ferociously as my friends, good luck everybody! Remember provide your Finger Limes with some sun protection.
