Single Review: Cloe Wilder – One Step Closer

Cloe Wilder is an indie-pop singer/songwriter and musician from Clearwater, Florida, and I’ve talked about them previously on the site, and you can check that out here. I’ve also talked with them too, and you can read my interview by clicking here. So I realized something when I began writing this review, that I have been covering Wilder’s music since someone from her agency reached out to me back in early 2019, and I could not be happier that I was correct in my assertion that they would continue to grow and develop as an artist, I could see even back then that they had phenomenal talent, and that as they matured time would only improve her. So here we are. Today I’ll be reviewing her single ‘One Step Closer’ which was released on the 22nd June 2022.

‘One Step Closer’ opens with a delicate piano melody, and Wilder’s voice is sensational as always, as I said up top I’ve really enjoyed the opportunity to see her grow as an artist and this track just proves how far she’s come because honestly her skill, her range, her soulful and impactful delivery are just breathtaking.

The Founding of Serendipolis

The very first tri-species society was founded on a truce to kill this one zebraman who managed to piss off all of the villages in his vicinity in ONE afternoon

As legend goes, there was a Zebraman named "Serendipus" (english translation, his name becomes the homo mousike word for "serendipity" much like how Narcissus became "narcissist") whose story can be summed up as "if the protagonists in an action movie's chase scene got consequences." He made his fatal mistake stealing from a lone zebraelf, and when he was confronted, he kicked the zebraelf and ran.

Of course, with the zebraelves' community, that one zebraelf came for him with reinforcements, and while fleeing, Serendipus wreaked havoc and destruction in his path while he ran through his village - trampling everyone's crops, destroying random booths, and knocking over Cloe aviaries in the hopes of stopping the relentless zebraelves after him.

He found himself at the outskirts of his village and ran for shelter in a Debu cave... in the middle of a funeral. If screaming at the deceased's corpse wasn't disrespectful enough, knocking over a pot of oil and starting a fire when Serendipus was fleeing sure was!

With nowhere else to go, Serendipus tried going home now that he had evaded the Zebraelves, but his fellow zebramen didn't want him back either, for obvious reasons - So the exiled Serendipus had to take to the wilderness on his own. But the zebraelves and debu hadn't gotten payment for their grievances, and neither did any of the zebramen who were in Serendipus's path of destruction.

The 3 neighboring species overcame language barriers, prejudices, and even past grudges all for the sake of finding and KILLING serendipus together, tracking him down like bloodhounds on a scent and turning him into red mist when they found him.

Though, after that experience, the truce never... ended. Interspecies bonds had been made between the new generations and after a few years, the three neighboring societies merged into one, becoming the wealthiest city in all of their times.

At the very center of this city, there is this circular relief carved of Serendipus with his everything broken after they finally found the fucker much that is much the Coyolxauhqui stone. Despite their mutual hatred, they do admit they never would've gotten together if it weren't for his negligence, and quite frankly, they all could admit he was fun to disembowel.

TW: Death

My WIP The Final Day is following Mallory Ramirez Black and Thana Nigel. Mallory dies young in some sort of accident related to her being neglected by her parents who shut her out after her older brother Lawliet died. She expects to go out instantly but is instead greeted by Thana, a newbie Grim Reaper from the royal family of the reaper world. Thana explains that human souls actually are granted a final 24 hours on Earth to do whatever they want with a reaper companion before being taken to their respective afterlife. Mallory tries to get out of this, not seeing much a reason to spend the time, but Thana pleads for her to wait it out since she’s never been to Earth before and desperately wants to know more about it (and because she needs to uphold her family’s reputation as powerful and successful reapers). Mallory eventually concedes and brings Thana to all sorts of places from her family’s apartment to an old amusement park Lawliet used to take her too. Without realizing it the two grow closer and closer, until they are forced to confront both that they have feelings for one another and that their time together is quickly running out. Mallory comes to terms with her death and comes to appreciate what she did get to experience while Thana learns just how much is beyond her bedroom walls and begins to loosen up. In the end Mallory chooses to be reincarnated and the two promise to find each other during her next life.

Some extra information just in case:

Mallory: 15, she/her, Plays guitar and violin, based pretty heavily off Lydia from the Beetlejuice musical, has ‘I’m too tired for this shit’ energy

Thana: 15, she/they, plays chess, severe gifted kid syndrome, is pretty heavily inspired by Ariel from The Little Mermaid

The ‘Earth’ that the two spend 24 hours in is essentially an alternate version of Earth (think the Upside Down from Stranger Things)

EP Review: Cloe Wilder – Teenage Lullabies

Cloe Wilder is a 15-year-old singer/songwriter from Clearwater, Florida and this isn’t our first time reviewing their music, you can check out what we’ve said before by clicking here, and if you want to find out more about Cloe then why not check out this interview we did with her as well, by clicking here. Today, however, I will be reviewing her debut EP ‘Teenage Lullabies’ which was released on January 21st 2021.

‘It’s True’ opens with ambient noise and the pop crackle effect you get on old records, backed up by a percussive heartbeat that flows throughout the track. And then Cloe’s voice, which is just perfect, deep enough to get lost in, powerful and emotive and has a depth of maturity and sincerity that some people never develop, let alone at the tender age of fifteen. I already knew I liked her music so I was excited for the release but I could not anticipate how blown away I was from the first track.

‘I Wanna Be Alone With You’ kicks things up a notch, faster and more energy, harder percussive and bass driven instrumentals that perfectly support her vocals, which work well within this punchier, rhythmic track. You also still get a strong sense of her emotions and intent, not just through the lyrics but the feel of it, nothing is just what is outright spoken, instead there is a subtext and emotional core of this track that’s very poignant.
