BOTD: Boat-billed Heron
Tumblr media
Photo: Josh More
"A crepuscular species, it uses its unique bill to hunt amphibians, small fish, crustaceans, insects, and small vertebrates, while wading through shallow water. The courtship display of this species is quite ritualized and includes carefully coordinated bill-touching and false fighting. It has been known to nest individually or in mixed species colonies of other herons and ibises. Unlike other species of herons, the Boat-billed Heron is very aggressive when defending its nest and young against potential predators, scaring away other species of birds, and vocalizing loudly, even lunging, at approaching humans."

Boat-Billed Heron (Cochlearius cochlearius)
Colloquially known as the Boatbill, Boat-Billed Herons nest in mangroves, usually nesting in colonies - although they have been seen nesting solitarily. One study hypothesized that, in order to forage for food in the dark and in muddy or shallow water, their unique bills are sensitive to the touch which allows them to feel for their prey - which includes crustaceans, small mammals, fish, insects, and molluscs.

Creature Awaits #192
Each week I plan to feature an amazing creature, admiring God's fantastic artistry.  Hopefully it’ll brighten someone’s day to see something new and interesting if they haven’t seen it before. : )
Happy New Year! The Greeks were thought to have based the mythological Phoenix on the now extinct Bennu Heron (Ardea bennuides), so to kick off 2023, it feels fitting to feature a variety of gorgeous "living phoenixes" - extant herons from around the world. - 💕

The Boat-Billed Heron
Scientific Name: Cochlearius cochlearius
Region: From southern Mexico through to southern Brazil
Size: About 1'9" (~54cm) tall, with a roughly 2'6" (~76.2cm) wingspan
Interesting Notes: This unusual heron is the only member of the genus "Cochlearius" - a name derived from the Latin name for a specific type of tapering Roman spoon called a "cochlearium", which literally translates to "spoon in the form of a snail shell".
