Watching some of the supplements to the pink flamingos criterion and this performer in the movie, Elizabeth Coffey was pre-op while filming, and if you’ve seen the movie you know she famously or infamously exposes herself on camera. Fast forward 50 years to a retrospective of John waters in 2022 in a Baltimore art museum, and I guess they’d made their bathrooms gender neutral somewhat recently and also named the bathrooms after John waters. So John invited Elizabeth Coffey who is also still alive and an advocate for trans seniors to come and be the first person to piss in their newly gender neutral bathrooms lol which seems like a very John waters thing to do lol

Extended Producer Responsibility For Packaging

The jaunty title above refers to packaging waste of all kinds. Up until now it has been local authorities that have been responsible for the cost of collecting and disposing of everyday packaging waste - from plastic bottles and cellulose wrappings, to the mountain of cardboard and shredded paper that seems to come with every Amazon order.

“Britons dispose of nearly 100bn pieces of plastic packaging a year.” (Guardian: 12/07/22)

Only 12% of single use plastic is sent for recycling, the rest going to landfill or, as is all to evident from simple observation, thrown onto our streets and roads. The vast majority of this waste - 83% - comes from food and drink packaging.

It is therefore a welcome development that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has been in consultation with various industrial sectors with the intension of making them financially responsible for packaging collection and disposal. The new proposals are meant to incentive producers to use less packaging while increasing the recycling properties of the packaging they do use. A good idea you might think.

Environment Secretary Therese Coffey is responsible for the implementation of the new scheme but although it was meant to come into force this year (2023) it has now been postponed to an unspecified date in 2024. Given Coffey’s inept failure to stop the privatised water companies from polluting our waterways and beaches this is hardly surprising. Corporate profit always comes first.

The new packaging proposals are expected to cost producers £1.7 bn and have been met with a lot of resistance. Coffey has a track record of putting company profits before environmental needs:

Its good to know Rishi Sunak has picked the right person for the job! No wonder we wade in raw sewage when we go to the beach or dip our toes into a local river. Coffey has given the privatised water companies until 2050 to continue polluting water and now she is sanctioning the continuation of needless one-use waste packaging to an unknown date in the future.
