Lots more writing than last year, so I'm happy for that. Did a few writing challenges this year as well, so that's something I'm proud of.

And, as always, you can also check out my master list for a full list of my works past and present.

I’ve done something terrible- An abridged chapter guide for Detective Conan
Every few years I come back to this series and try to get caught up. To help this process, I’ve combed the wiki’s to gather the plot relevant cases, every appearance of the detectives, notable cases, etc. and combined them into a handy cheat sheet to skip the ‘filler’ cases.
At the time I posted this, there are 1102 chapters of this manga! to make it slightly more manageable (lol) I did this list.
Here is that list, continued under the Read More
Some notes-
please add onto this post if I’ve missed something! The wiki’s weren’t always as detailed as I needed, so if I’ve missed a Kaito-kid case or a detective appearance, please let me know!
when cases are back to back, I just included them in the same group. That’s why you have lumps like (417-459) I also don’t hate myself enough to label the individual cases sorry not sorry.

starting from 790, I haven’t really noticed a case without a significant character appearance, plot progression, character moment, or some other reason to include it in this list. If you disagree, please send me your list, I’m sure it’ll be much less headache inducing than compiling this monster will be.

Second Before Last (Arthur Conan Doyle/OC)
Theme: A Flower Left Behind: “Arthur always leaves a flower on the table for his favourite barista (a different one every time, sometimes with a lil’ note, but never a red rose. He will give that in person when he confesses.)”
Pairing: Arthur Conan Doyle/Elizabeth (OC)
Words: 755 words
Warnings: None.
Tagging: This is a May Flower for @forgesanddoves! Thank you!
• [This fic was part of my Ko-Fi Commission Event.] •

Arthur’s hands fell away from his laptop, the chair creaking as he leaned back with a relieved sigh. He was thankful that he had decided to hit up his favorite coffee shop in order to finish his manuscript. It had come together after three cups of his favorite brew, a sandwich, and the rare indulgent treat.
Clearly, I owe my favorite barista a proper thank-you. Firing off the manuscript to his editor, Arthur lifted his mug towards the counter, toasting to his success and downing the last dregs of his coffee.
Not that she noticed. That wonderfully beautiful redhead, with freckles dotting her nose and cheeks, was still working hard behind the counter. He loved that little determined look on her face, her focus razor-sharp as she crafted a beautiful latte pattern and passed it over the counter to the waiting customer. He had tempted her with that same skill long ago, even going so far as to purchase one and beg her to not add copious amounts of sugar or syrups.
And she had listened. That was one of the many things he loved about her.
Sweeping his papers into a haphazard pile, Arthur removed something from his bag before stuffing them in. He gathered up all of his napkins and tableware before laying a single red tulip on the table, relieved that it had not been crumpled by his bag.
“Cheerio, Elizabeth!” he called out over the counter as he set his dishes into the bin. “Gotta run! Have a pleasant evening!”
Her gaze met his and her hand waved good-bye as she stepped out from behind the counter. His smile widened as he watched her walk right towards his table.
Elizabeth, you’re a real beauty. Might even be too much for me – but that’s not going to stop me from asking you out.
───────────────────────⋆⋅♠⋅⋆ ───────────────────────
“Cheerio, Elizabeth!”
Elizabeth’s head shot up at Arthur’s call, meeting his eyes over the counter. She chanced a glance towards his table, gasping.
There’s another flower! She waved as Arthur wished her a pleasant evening and swept out the door. Hurrying out from behind the counter, she retrieved the flower before anybody else could, twirling it between her fingers.
This is a tulip, right? Tilting it back towards her face, Elizabeth frowned when it only smelled like a fresh-cut stem – completely different from all the other fragrant flowers that Arthur had left her previously. Heading back behind the counter, she attempted to slip into the backroom without being seen by—
“What kind of flower is it this time?”
She froze at Sebastian’s voice, tucking the flower behind her back as she turned. “What do you mean?”
“You denying it is getting old. I saw him leave it too, you know. What kind of flower is it?”
“… A tulip.”
“Oh?” A knowing smile tugged at the corners of his lips. “And have you looked up the meaning yet?”
“No. Do you know what it is?”
“Perhaps. Either way, go add it to the vase before it wilts. He was here for a while and I imagine that flower hasn’t been sitting in water. You would be sad if it wilted.”
“The vase was your idea! I would throw this away if it wasn’t back there.”
“Whatever you say, Elizabeth.” His amused tone followed her into the back room, where she unceremoniously dropped the flower into the vase. A quick check told her it needed more water. She eyed the strange bouquet as she filled it up, recalling the meanings of each flower in turn before settling on the tulip.
“Time to check the meaning…” Pulling her phone out of her pocket, she typed in the prompt quickly, the results taking only a second to load—
Perfect love, her screen declared. She drew it closer, reading and rereading the words over and over again. Her mouth went dry, and she clutched her phone to her chest as her heart began to beat wildly.
None of his prior flowers had been so glaringly obvious as this one. Those ones had had deeper meanings, sometimes the third or fourth result down, implying something or another about her beauty and assumptions regarding her personality.
But this implies something more. But… he couldn’t be. If he asks me out… I don’t know if I’ll be able to take that. And at work!
Taking a deep breath to relax herself, Elizabeth’s mouth set itself in a determined line.
“If he tries anything while I’m at work, I’ll deck him right in the mouth.”

Episode 622-623: Emergency Situation 252
Tumblr media
Based on volume 72, files 753-755
Plot in five keywords:
Play hide and seek in an abandoned building
Genta hears someone knocking the emergency code 252
Two men pretend that they are demolishing workers
Conan finds out that they are fake
And someone is held hostage inside the building
Important plot development:
We get to know that Conan kept it as a secret that he was involved in the London case because he can’t legally enter the UK because his identity is not existing
Ai mentions that Shinichi’s confession might become a problem when she wants to meet him more often
Ai finds out that Okiya was observing Agasa’s house for the whole day
Rating:
7/10 emergency codes
This is actually quite interesting and there is much tension. I like this case. You should watch it.

Detective Conan, Ep. 755
I don’t understand this business with keeping part of a child’s umbilical cord. I’ve seen it here, in Future Diary, and in Arjuna (iirc), and it still feels weird. Is this a Japanese thing? Is it just a thing people do when they have babies??

Java API Classes as Fictional Characters―A Proposal for Google v. Oracle (Guest Blog Post)
by Marketa Trimble
In disputes over the copyrightability of computer programs and their elements, it is common to invoke analogies from literature. In Google v. Oracle (in which the U.S. Supreme Court granted a cert petition on November 15, 2019), Oracle began its appellant’s Opening Brief in 2013 with an analogy drawn from “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”; the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit then used Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities” in its 2014 decision. (Professor Peter Menell gives an excellent and detailed description of the Oracle v. Google litigation here). Analogies have been drawn to library bookshelves, books, chapters, paragraphs, and topic sentences to explain the structure and nature of the Java programming language at issue in Oracle v. Google (as styled in the lower courts).
However, when it comes to the code for programming objects, such as the code for Java’s API classes, perhaps the proper analogy should be the names and descriptions of fictional literary characters. Is it possible for a fictional literary character, someone like “Sherlock Holmes,” for instance, to be a proper analogy for “java.security.ProtectionDomain”? “Sherlock Holmes” evokes a mental image with distinctive traits―the kind of distinctively delineated, specific, non-general characteristics that courts require in order to afford copyright protection to fictional characters. [FN] For the right kind of reader, though, “java.security.ProtectionDomain” may, perhaps, evoke a mental image―an image of a particular Java class.
[FN: Because of the length of time since the publication of most of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s novels about Sherlock Holmes, the character of “Sherlock Holmes” is largely out of copyright—see Klinger v. Conan Doyle Estate, Ltd., 988 F. Supp. 2d 879 (N.D. Ill. 2013), aff’d, 755 F.3d 496 (7th Cir.), cert. denied, 135 S. Ct. 458 (2014).]
Arguably, programming objects, which are described by code such as the code in Java classes, are somewhat like fictional characters: the objects are “capable of sending and receiving messages and processing data,” and “each object [acts] as an independent entity or actor with a distinct role or responsibility.” Gerard O’Regan, A Brief History of Computing, Springer-Verlag, 2012, DOI 10.1007/978-1-4471-2359-0_5, p. 132. Object portability corresponds to the “portability” of a copyright-protected literary character: the character’s traits are “delineated to the point at which [the character’s] behavior is relatively predictable so that, when placed in a new plot situation, it will react in ways that are at once distinctive and unsurprising.” Goldstein on Copyright §2.7.2.
How would the analogy work? Using copyright-protected characters from an existing novel in a new work without the copyright owner’s permission or license possibly infringes copyright in the characters. Even if the only words copied from the original novel are the names of the characters, infringement may still occur—not because of the use of the names as such (names are unlikely to be protected by copyright), but because of the use of the characters in the new work. Even if the new work includes a completely new description of the characters (describing the same characters using different text than in the original novel), the new work still infringes the copyright in the characters. By analogy, using an object (such as a Java class) in a new work (such as Google’s Android) would infringe copyright in the object, even if the new work (Android) uses only the object name (the declaring code of the Java class) and its own new implementing code for the object, as long as it is the same object.
As is the case for fictional literary characters, the devil is in the protectability of the programming object. Is the object actually copyrightable, i.e. is it an original work of authorship? Or, in the language applied to fictional characters, does the object have distinct, non-general traits? An object consists of methods of operation, which are on their own not protectible by copyright; a literary character can also be the sum of individually unprotectible elements, particularly if there is no visual image that accompanies the character. Consequently, protectability seems to be a high bar for a programming object, but perhaps appropriately so if copyright law should promote creativity in computer programming.
Understandably, some will find the above analogy unsuitable, and perhaps just as inappropriate as have been many previous attempts to analogize computer programs to literature. The uncertainty surrounding the copyrightability of literary characters might be another good reason to avoid the analogy. But to those who look for analogies in literature to assist them in understanding what is and what is not copyrightable in computer programs, it might be useful to employ an analogy using fictional literary characters instead of analogies using books, chapters, paragraphs, or topic sentences.
The author thanks Dr. Andreas Stefik, Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for his comments on an earlier version of this text.

The author thanks Dr. Andreas Stefik, Associate Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, for his comments on an earlier version of this text.
