How to Attract Skilled Workers in the Construction Industry?
Tumblr media
In the competitive landscape of the construction industry, attracting skilled workers is a challenge that companies face consistently. With projects becoming more complex and timelines tighter, the demand for highly skilled and reliable personnel has never been higher. Berry Recruitment, a leading recruitment agency with a focus on providing top-tier talent for both permanent positions and a temporary staff agency, shares insights on how companies can attract skilled workers in the construction sector.
1.       Understand the Skilled Workers’ Needs
The first step in attracting skilled workers is understanding what they are looking for in a job. Most skilled workers in the construction industry value competitive salaries, job security, opportunities for advancement, and a healthy work-life balance. Companies that are able to provide these benefits are more likely to attract and retain top talent.
2.       Build a Strong Employer Brand
An employer brand is essentially what your company is known for in the job market. A strong employer brand that promotes a positive work environment, career growth opportunities, and employee satisfaction can make your company more attractive to skilled workers. Berry Recruitment advises companies to invest in building their employer brand through various channels such as social media, company websites, and through the success stories of their current employees.
3.       Offer Competitive Compensation and Benefits
To attract skilled workers, companies must offer competitive compensation and benefit packages. This includes not just the base salary but also bonuses, health insurance, retirement plans, and other perks that can set your company apart from competitors. A construction recruitment agency like Berry Recruitment can provide valuable market insights to help determine competitive compensation packages.
4.       Invest in Training and Development
Skilled workers are often looking for opportunities to grow their skills and advance their careers. Companies that invest in training and development programs demonstrate a commitment to their employees' professional growth, making them more attractive to potential hires. These programs can range from on-the-job training to sponsoring certifications or advanced education in relevant fields.
5.       Leverage a Recruitment Agency
Partnering with a specialised recruitment agency can significantly streamline the process of attracting skilled workers. Agencies like Berry Recruitment have extensive networks and a deep understanding of the construction industry, enabling them to match the right candidates with the right opportunities efficiently. Moreover, they can handle much of the recruitment process, from sourcing to screening, allowing companies to focus on their core operations.
6.       Create a Positive Work Culture
A positive work culture is critical for attracting and retaining skilled workers. This includes promoting safety, teamwork, and open communication within the workplace. Workers want to feel valued and respected, and a positive work environment can be a significant draw for skilled professionals.
7.       Embrace Technology and Innovation
The construction industry is increasingly adopting new technologies and methodologies. Companies that are at the forefront of this innovation are more attractive to skilled workers who are looking to work on cutting-edge projects and use the latest tools. Embracing technology can also streamline your operations and make your projects more appealing to potential hires.
8.       Flexible Work Arrangements
Offering flexible work arrangements can be a significant attractor for skilled workers. This can include flexible hours, the option to work remotely when possible, and understanding the need for a work-life balance. While the nature of construction work may limit the feasibility of remote work, there are still ways to incorporate flexibility into your work arrangements.
Conclusion
Attracting skilled workers in the construction industry requires a multifaceted approach that addresses the needs and desires of these professionals. By understanding what skilled workers are looking for, building a strong employer brand, offering competitive compensation and benefits, investing in training and development, leveraging the expertise of a construction recruitment agency, creating a positive work culture, embracing technology, and offering flexible work arrangements, companies can significantly improve their ability to attract the top talent needed to succeed in today’s competitive construction industry. Berry Recruitment stands ready to partner with companies to navigate these challenges and secure the skilled workforce necessary for their success.

Building a New Life
Tumblr media
Justin was the star wrestler at his high school. He had won regional titles and the adoration of all the local families for years, and was ready to head to college to continue his streak. Senior year he was at his peak, winning matches left and right. All he had to do was wait for those recruitment offers to roll in. He waited and waited, still kicking ass in his wrestling, but while everyone around him was committing and getting accepted, there were no letters to him. To his dismay, one never came. His plans for the future were shattered, what was he supposed to do now? The wrestling scholarship was his only shot for college.
With the year ending and not many options, Justin started looking for entry level jobs that would take him. He lived in a fairly rural area so most of what he found was either farm work or construction, and the latter paid better. He called one of them up and they told him to swing by the site a few days later. He drove out to the construction site later that week and walked into the mobile office they had there. The manager came out to greet him. He was a rugged man in his late 40’s, with a stocky build and thick stubble. He’d clearly been in the business for years and it showed through his worn hands and gruff voice from yelling orders at his lackeys. The man looked Justin up and down.
“A little scrawny but I can work with it,” he said after a few seconds.
“I was a top wrestler in the region!” Justin protested.
“Doesn’t matter in this industry,” the man said flatly. “Can you handle heavy loads and equipment? Can you deal with being outside most of the day in rough weather?”
Justin was caught off guard, usually people were much nicer to him. “Of course I can! I can handle whatever you throw at me,” he assured.
“Well alright, If you think you can handle it let’s see how you do here,” the manager said, handing a pile of clothes to Justin. “Here’s your safety and HiVis gear, make sure it fits and then we’ll get you set up outside.”
Justin took his uniform to the bathroom to try it on real quick. It included a hard hat that was adjustable, which he fit to his head, a bright orange and yellow HiVis vest, and a couple other things. He put it all on and stepped back into the office.
“Alright follow me, Justin was it?” the manager gestured towards the door.
“Yes sir,” Justin responded uncharacteristically.
“Name’s Blaine, the manager revealed, “Around here we usually work on residential projects, we’re currently assisting on a development outside of town.” He led them away from the office around the immediate site, which currently seemed to be mostly used as storage for equipment and materials. “Since you’ve got no experience you’ll start by shadowing some of our guys for a few weeks and handling more basic tasks til you’re ready for more,” he continued. “You can head back to the office and they'll take care of the nitty gritty for ya. I’m expecting great things from you, wrestler,” Blaine laughed as he left Justin and headed out towards the development. Justin heard his gruff voice booming in the distance as he barked orders to the workers.
Justin was unsure about all of this, but he didn’t really have a better option at the moment. He felt out of place in his new safety gear, and he was younger than nearly everyone he saw working. He took care of the paperwork and headed home for the day; they'd hired him on the spot to start the next morning. With considerable unease, he went to bed, closing one chapter of his life for the next.
As the weeks went by Justin began acclimating to this new job fairly well. He got to know the guys he worked with, learned how to use the equipment, and began to feel comfortable on the site. He even felt like he had put on some mass to better handle all the physical work he was doing. His rock solid abs were a little less visible than they had been but for some reason that didn’t bother him. He was already starting to forget the sting of not being recruited for wrestling. Every day he came into work those past dreams seemed to fade a little more, replaced by his new life. His coworkers had made fun of him for having such a baby face at the beginning, but now he was starting to sport a little bit of stubble. Justin was slowly starting to blend in more with his new crowd.
Tumblr media
The months continued to pass, with Justin becoming more and more entrenched in his new construction life. It was getting colder outside, and his body began to adjust without him even noticing. His stubble grew out into a real beard, short and dense. He began packing on more body fat as he spent less and less time at the gym and more and more working and drinking with his new bros. His voice began to sound a little deeper and rougher, matching those around him. The hard hat really suited him now with his more rugged looks. He had never been a good student in school but he seemed to really be taking to this new job, completely forgetting about his old goals. The occassional approving nod from Blaine was driving him forward. He was thriving in this new position, but the job wasn’t done with him yet.
Tumblr media
Unbeknownst to Justin, under his thick winter clothes things were changing. His previously toned body, while still fairly muscular, was steadily becoming thicker with fat. Not only that, but he’d always been near perfectly smooth and that too was slowly changing. It had started with his chest, where on the previously bare skin thin wispy hairs had started to poke out. That didn’t last long though, as they were quickly overrun with thicker, darker hairs that began sprouting in between his pecs. They grew curly as they spread out, covering his entire chest in hair, spreading up across his collarbone and down across his slowly growing stomach. The new hairy coat was just another part of his insulation against the harsh winter weather. But the hairs didn’t stop there either. His pits erupted with thick wiry hairs, coating his underarms in curly hairs that trapped both heat and sweat. The hairs pushed out, tangling together as they formed a thick tuft of hair under each arm, even spreading out to connect with the rug on his chest. After each day of hard work he’d come home stinking like the other men he worked with, and over time he started to enjoy the musk he produced.
Tumblr media
Of course he wasn’t done filling out his uniform quite yet. His formerly modest bush began growing with no end in sight, engulfing his groin in thick, wiry brown hairs that radiated out from his lengthening cock. Sometimes while on the site Justin would instinctively reach down in his pants to itch the growing bush, the feeling and texture of it driving him wild. With pubes erupting day and night his musk only grew stronger, as Justin began to truly have a manly aura around him that he’d never had before. It seemed to help him bond with the other guys more, as they welcomed him into their groups and invited him out more and more frequently. Underneath his work pants his legs bulked up considerably from carrying all sorts of materials around, followed closely by the same dark fur. It raced down his legs and coated them with curly hairs that rubbed against the inside of his increasingly tight jeans as he walked around, an almost arousing feeling. Within the first year of working Justin had gone up four sizes in his work boots, as his feet grew and widened to match the rest of him. The massive steel-toed boots hid how hairy his feet had gotten, with dark hairs covering the tops and toes.
Tumblr media
The next year was largely the same. Justin continued slowly changing to better fit his new job. He was really beginning to excel at it, and he’d attained a close friendship with many of the men he worked with. It almost seemed as if he’d aged ten years over the last one, he certainly looked it at this point. His fur coat only thickened, growing even denser across his chest and stomach to the point you could barely see the skin beneath the hairs. Hair had also spread up and onto his shoulders before enveloping his massive back. The hairs gushed out across his shoulder blades before shooting down his spine and spreading out wide. The heavy coating slowly grew thicker and spread out further as time went on, reaching down to his ass. It too became covered with thick, dark hairs as it inflated to a truly massive size. During the warmer months sometimes he just wore his vest and hard hat, his incredibly thick hair covering the rest of him and sticking through his vest.
Tumblr media
Justin earned the nickname ‘Grizzly’ from his coworkers after they saw how hairy he’d gotten, and his body had put on the size to match. Gone was the small but toned body of a wrestler, replaced by a thick, hairy, and sturdy body of a weathered construction worker. He oozed masculinity from not only his stained and dirty work clothes, but from the thick chest hair that he left his shirt open to show off. His entire body was now coated with a dense coat of hair and he liked to make that known, as long as he wasn’t caught against safety regulations at least. He never questioned why he’d changed so much in such a short span, it never even occurred to him, and honestly he liked his new life. He was just one of the guys working on the site now. The hair felt as natural to him as anything else, and the other guys seemed to like it even if they made fun of him once in a while. Occasionally when they went out drinking some of the guys would have too many beers and start rubbing their hands through his thick fur, but he didn’t mind at all. It felt good to be masculine, and to be appreciated for it by other guys. Months continued to pass though no one could really remember how long Justin had been working there at this point, but they were all glad he was there. He was the best construction worker on their team.

Iran is now a “legitimate target” for Israeli missile strikes, one of the country’s most senior ministers has told the Telegraph, raising the prospect of an all-out war with Tehran.
In a wide-ranging interview, Nir Barkat, Israel’s economy minister, also said Palestinians from the West Bank would never be allowed to work in the country again and would be replaced by more than a quarter of a million imported foreign workers.
He also complained that the war in Gaza had not been fought aggressively enough.
Mr Barkat, who is favourite to succeed Benjamin Netanyahu as leader of the ruling Likud party, said Israel could afford to keep fighting and open up a new front with Lebanon, despite the billion shekel (£200 million) a day cost of the conflict.
He said that as “big as the crisis is, it is also a really big opportunity”, with governments around the world needing Israel’s technical expertise to combat global jihadism.[...]
The risk of the war spreading to Lebanon and as far as Iran will alarm Western leaders, with Mr Barkat becoming increasingly influential in the ruling party.
Polls suggest the economy minister would win five more seats than Mr Netanyahu if he replaced him as Likud’s leader.
Mr Barkat, 64, said: “Iran is a legitimate target for Israel. They will not get away with it. The head of the snake is Tehran. My recommendation is to adopt the strategy that President Kennedy used in the Cuban missile crisis. What he basically said then was a missile from Cuba will be answered with a missile to Moscow.[...]
Israel is edging towards a full-blown war with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, having evacuated the north of the country. Mr Barkat said a second war was affordable while “the threat of Hezbollah must be eliminated”.
“Whatever it takes,” he said[...]
The economy is expected to grow by two per cent this year, down from five per cent forecast prior to the war.[...]
As the country lurches to the Right in the aftermath of October 7 and with Mr Netanyahu’s personal ratings plummeting, Mr Barkat appears to be making a play to replace the prime minister as party leader.[...]
Mr Barkat rejected any suggestion that Palestinian labourers, who previously came into Israel daily to work in the construction and other industries, would be allowed to return. Daily crossings for labourers into Israel from the West Bank have been on hold since October 7.
He likened the Palestinian Authority running the West Bank to the Hamas leadership in Gaza.
“You know what the difference is? Nothing,” said Mr Barkat. [...]
Israel has long been reliant on workers coming into the country from Gaza and the West Bank, but Mr Barkat, whose ministry is responsible for the construction industry, said: “We are done with Palestinian employees. The rationale behind it is very simple: we only want foreign employees from peaceful countries. We don’t want employees from enemies.[...]
India is the likeliest target for a recruitment drive with the promise of wages seven to ten times higher than at home. “Everybody wins,” said Mr Barkat.
“If you don’t do what I proposed, it’s as if we didn’t learn the lessons of October 7.”[...]
On the conduct of the war in Gaza and in the face of international condemnation of Israel’s tactics, Mr Barkat said: “Israel is being very cautious[...]
The reality is at certain points in time I prefer a much more aggressive approach.”[...]
["]This is a religious war.” [he said]

The link between warfare and technological innovation has been well documented [...]. World War II was a particularly intense crucible of technological change, and the repurposing of military technologies and industries in the forging of a new post-war consumer [economy] is crucial [...]. Processes of technological bricolage turned the machines of war onto the natural world as global powers competed to cement their economic and imperial hegemony. In Great Britain’s post-war “groundnut scheme” in its East African territories (1946–51), this collision of nature, military hardware, and technical expertise was part of efforts to both produce more fats for the British diet and to demonstrate to the world (most importantly the United States) that, through a newly energized science-led developmentalism, British colonialism still had a “progressive” role to play in the postwar world.
Tumblr media
The aim was to produce millions of tons of peanuts across Tanganyika using the latest methods of advanced scientific agriculture. The environmental conditions in the north, where the scheme was to begin, were known to be especially trying, not least the dry climate [...]. But faith in the power of mechanized agriculture was such that any natural limits were thought to be readily surmountable.
The groundnut scheme was to be, as its Director put it in an interview with the Tanganyika Standard, a “war” with nature, and an “economic Battle of Alamein” waged over some three million acres by an army of colonial technicians -- many recruited from military ranks -- and local laborers, for many of whom the scheme represented their first entry into the wage labor market.
---
But it wasn’t just the rhetoric of war that was repurposed.
Lancaster bombers were kitted out to survey and discover “new country” in East Africa for agricultural development. [...] [T]ractors and bulldozers from military surplus stores in Egypt proved unable to tackle the hard ground and tough vegetation, so the planners turned to a novel solution: repurposing surplus Sherman M4A2 tanks. The Vickers-Armstrong factory in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne set about rearranging key elements of the tanks’ construction [...]. The tractors, christened “Shervicks” for their hybrid origins, were [...] thought to be particularly suited to large-scale earth-moving and to the kind of heavy duty “bush clearing” that was required in Tanganyika.
Tumblr media
Officials sought to dismiss concerns that large-scale bush clearing would have wider environmental consequences, using the well-worn colonial trope that any observed changes in local climate or erosion patterns were due to the “primitive” agricultural practices of the locals, not to the earth-moving practices of the colonists.
Albert Walter, who had directed meteorology in East Africa since the 1920s, had been appointed as an advisor to the scheme and warned the other technical advisers of the low rainfall levels. [...] As the plants continued to wilt in the sun, Walter’s dense network of rain gauges made for an ideal field laboratory [...].
Tumblr media
The stakes were high. As John Rosa of the Colonial Development Corporation put it in a letter: “Our standing as an Imperial power in Africa is to a substantial extent bound up with the future of this scheme. To abandon it would be a humiliating blow to our prestige everywhere.”
The only option left was to try and bend the weather itself to the scheme’s will, by seeding the clouds for rain. The scheme was nonetheless abandoned by the British government before charcoal burners could be lined up to seed clouds upwind of the growing area. But the experiments carried on under the aegis of the local colonial government and its meteorologists.
“Balloon bombs” (photographic film canisters tethered to weather balloons) and a repurposed Royal Navy flare gun were used to target individual clouds when the burners proved imprecise. [...] The rainmaking experiments lived on too, as a reference point for those who, to this day, seek to engineer the skies.
The scheme itself has survived as a cautionary tale of governmental hubris, but it is instructive too as a case study of how technologies of war have been turned against other foes.

Leopold II's atrocities in Congo
At the end of the 19th century, the powerful ruler of Belgium took control of the heart of Africa and enslaved the indigenous populations, killing and mutilating millions of people.
Tumblr media
Leopold II in his uniform
False philanthropist
Leopold II is still a controversial figure in Congo today. The terrifying visions that shock Kurtz are the images of a little-known genocide, the one perpetrated between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries by Leopold II of Belgium. A devious and cruel ruler, who passed for being a philanthropist and who instead was the architect of one of the greatest misdeeds in recent history. In 1885 Leopold II managed to take possession of an immense territory (76 times larger than Belgium) covered with forests in the heart of Africa − the drainage basin of the Congo River − thanks to a very clever public relations campaign, in the name of promoting geographical and scientific research, the fight against Arab slave traders, and the spread of civilization and progress.
To achieve his goals, he recruited the most famous explorer of his time, Henry Morton Stanley, who traveled the river and stipulated hundreds of deceptive contracts with local tribal chiefs and laid the foundations for the construction of a system of stations that acted as collectors of the riches of the forest who could reach the ports at the mouth of the river through the river and from there to Europe.
Serve some rubber
Leopold II and the Congo but what were the riches of the forest in those days? There was one, highly coveted by the industry of the time, a resin that was obtained by cutting the bark of the so-called rubber trees and was collected in containers placed at the foot of the trunk. It was rubber, which, thanks to the discovery of the vulcanization process, was destined to become the precursor of plastic. To gain control of this strategic raw material, King Leopold organized a real commercial-military regime consciously based on terror.
Labor was needed to collect the rubber and transport it to the sea, so all Africans were forced to collect that resin without any compensation. Each village had to deliver a certain share of the precious plant product to the emissaries of the philanthropist king: anyone who refused, or delivered smaller quantities than those requested, was harshly punished, to the point of mutilation: a hand or a foot was cut off; to women, the breasts. Assassinations, punitive expeditions, destruction of villages and taking women hostage were used against the rebels.
Inhuman cruelty
Tumblr media
Around two thousand white agents were doing the dirty work, spread across the most important points of Leopold's "kingdom": many of them were infamous at home and poorly paid in the Congo. Each agent commanded troops of mercenaries (sixteen thousand in total) and a certain number of armed natives, taken from different ethnic groups and located in individual villages, to ensure that people did their duty. If the quota was lower than the established one, flogging or mutilation was resorted to. It was the method of terror, as effective as it was diabolical.
All this happened in the Congo Free State, as Leopold had called "his" possession. The result was that, according to reliable calculations, around ten million people died over a twenty-year period, directly from amputations or violence, or indirectly from epidemics or starvation. Yes, out of hunger. Because another form of punishment for those who failed to bring in the desired quantities of rubber was the destruction of crops or even villages. And bringing the precious resin in the desired quantities became increasingly difficult, because the suitable plants, given the intensive exploitation, were found further and further from the river and many villages were unable to honor the requests.
Courageous Witnesses
In August 1908, shortly before officially handing over his personal colony to the Belgian government, Leopold II had most of his archives burned for eight consecutive days. “I will give my Congo to the Belgians, but they will not have the right to know what I have done there,” he said. And, in addition to the papers reduced to ashes, he drastically silenced the inconvenient witnesses. Thus it was that an important part of the history of European domination in Africa was erased.
A handful of heroes - journalists, explorers, missionaries or diplomats - who gave birth to the first global movement for the defense of human rights: Edmund Morel, a British reporter and politician who was the first to investigate what was happening in Congo, shouted to the world what was happening in Congo. what happened in Congo; George Washington Williams and William Sheppard, two black Americans, the first a journalist and the second a Christian preacher, who dismantled the figure of King Leopold as a philanthropist; Roger Casement, British consul in Congo, who reported back home what he saw. Without forgetting Alice Seeley Harris and her husband John Harris, two daring missionaries who at the beginning of the twentieth century toured the Congolese forest with the Bible in one hand and the camera in the other. It is thanks to their courage that today we can publish the shocking images of that era. Those precious witnesses denounced Leopold II's reign of terror to the whole world and stopped the carnage of the indigenous peoples

The Setting
Bougainville
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A quaint town with a population of 10,000. Located in the Pas-de-Calais department of Northern France, it is an amalgamation of days past and modern times; preserving its original construction from 150 years ago while intertwining with modern-day advancements.
History
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The town was founded in the late 1800s by Olivier Bougainvillea: a renowned physicist from Paris who led a scientific expedition to the area that would later be known as Bougainville. The goal of his expedition was to study unusual electromagnetic radiations within the area. He set up a research base that would inadvertently grow with the influx of scientists and researchers Bougainvillea recruited to participate in his research. The growing scale of Bougainvillea's research necessitated better infrastructure and living facilities; resulting in the arrival of more labor for construction. The rapid influx of people now requiring long-term accommodation in the area demanded more housing, and soon the base had transformed into a small hamlet. Thus, began the settlement of Bougainville. As time passed, the families of the workers and researchers had relocated to the area; operating independent businesses to fill demands such as clothing, food, and other essential supplies. And as the economy grew, so did the settlement. More merchants and businesses settled in the hamlet, and soon, what was once a research base became the town of Bougainville: named after the lead scientist that pioneered the settlement of the area and powered the town with his discoveries and innovations. In honour of his legacy, Bougainvillea flowers line the front of almost every street, creating a beautiful sight at every turn.
Geography
Tumblr media
Bougainville has Calais to the north, Le Portel to the west, Lumbres to the east, and Desvres to the south. It is nestled adjacent to the Parc naturel regional des caps et marais d’Opale. As such, lazily drifting fog and chilly weather are a permanent fixture in the small town, perfectly complementing its slow, leisurely lifestyle. A river divides the town into two sides: West and East. Western Bougainville is its central business district; housing the entertainment district and the shopping district; as well as the town hall, Bougainville bank, and police station. Eastern Bougainville is the town’s health and education district; being the location of Bougainvillea University, Bougainville General Hospital, and the Bougainvillea Foundation’s central laboratory; which is open to the public as a science museum. To the north of the town is the Emilie Francoise Nature Reserve, which is 1000 acres of protected marshland and forest. It is also here that the Bougainvillea Power Plant is located; which provides electricity to the entire town.

Navigating the Construction Equipment Recruitment Landscape
The construction industry is booming in North America, with over 20% of the workforce over fifty-five. Construction companies must increase recruitment efforts to meet the growing demand for skilled workers. Talon Recruiting is a specialized recruitment agency with the networks and expertise to provide quality personnel with the right experience in the multifaceted construction industry. Our construction division thoroughly understands all levels of technical, managerial, and supervisory personnel. In this blog post, we will explore the challenges of navigating the construction equipment recruitment landscape and how Talon Recruiting can help you find the right talent to satisfy your needs.
The Challenges of Construction Equipment Recruitment
The construction industry faces unique challenges when recruiting top talent. According to a National Association of Home Builders survey, 80% of contractors report difficulty finding qualified workers.
One of the biggest challenges facing construction companies is finding qualified candidates. With the industry experiencing a shortage of skilled labour, it can be difficult for companies to find workers with the necessary skills and experience to complete assignments in a productive and timely manner.
Another challenge lies in the demographic composition of the construction workforce. Nearly a quarter of all construction workers are aged 55 or older. As these experienced professionals approach retirement, the industry must focus on attracting fresh talent to ensure its future vitality.
Diversity is another critical aspect of the construction industry. Companies must ensure that their workforce is diverse and inclusive to reflect the communities they serve.

How to Master the Art of Candidate Sourcing?
Tumblr media
In the ever-evolving recruitment landscape, the candidate sourcing process has emerged as a crucial aspect of talent acquisition. Finding suitable candidates who possess the skills, experience, and cultural fit for your organisation can be a challenging endeavour. Mastering the art of candidate recruitment requires a combination of strategic thinking, innovative techniques, and a deep understanding of your industry and target audience. Here are some proven strategies to help you navigate the intricacies of candidate sourcing effectively.
Define Your Ideal Candidate Profile
Before embarking on the journey of candidate sourcing, clearly defining your ideal candidate profile is imperative. A well-defined profile outlines the skills, qualifications, experience, and personality traits essential for the role. This serves as a blueprint for your sourcing efforts and ensures you're targeting candidates that align with your organisation's values and goals.
Leverage Technology and Tools
The digital age has revolutionised the way companies source candidates. An array of tools and platforms available can significantly streamline the sourcing process. Job boards, social media platforms, and professional networking sites like LinkedIn are rich sources of potential candidates. Additionally, AI-powered recruitment software can help you sift through resumes, analyse candidate data, and identify top matches efficiently.
Harness the Power of Networking
Networking remains a potent tool in candidate sourcing. Attend industry-specific events, conferences, and seminars to connect with professionals who fit your organisation perfectly. Build relationships with industry influencers, thought leaders, and professionals who can refer potential candidates your way. Often, the best candidates are found through personal connections and recommendations.
Create Compelling Job Descriptions
Crafting compelling and detailed job descriptions is an art that can significantly impact your sourcing efforts. A well-written job description should outline the responsibilities and qualifications and paint a vivid picture of your company's culture and values. Highlight the unique aspects of your organisation that make it an attractive workplace. This will attract candidates who resonate with your vision and mission.
Utilise Employee Referrals
Employee referrals can be a goldmine for sourcing top talent. Your existing employees are well-versed in the organisation's culture. They can refer candidates who are likely to thrive within the company. To incentivise referrals, consider implementing a referral program that rewards employees for successful hires.
Engage in Passive Candidate Sourcing
Passive candidates who are not actively seeking new opportunities often turn out to be exceptional hires. You must adopt a proactive approach to tap into this talent pool. Reach out to potential candidates on professional networking sites or through personalised emails, highlighting the value proposition of joining your organisation.
Embrace Social Media
Social media is a powerful tool for candidate sourcing, enabling you to reach a vast audience. Create engaging content that showcases your company's culture, values, and accomplishments. Platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and even Instagram can be leveraged to engage with potential candidates and foster a sense of community.
Conclusion
Mastering the art of candidate sourcing requires a blend of creativity, technological prowess, and a genuine understanding of your organisation's needs. You can build a robust talent pipeline that aligns with your company's objectives by defining your ideal candidate, harnessing technology capabilities, networking effectively, and employing various sourcing strategies. Remember, successful candidate sourcing is an ongoing process that requires continuous adaptation and refinement to stay ahead in the competitive recruitment landscape.

I'm Back!! Kinda...
I know it's been a while since I posted my own content or writing but I wrote this a few years back and never shared it but I know this would be helpful to a lot of you girlies now that the job market has once again taken a downturn. I originally wrote this after landing my first full-time job post-2020.
Like many, I graduated into a pandemic and found myself looking for my first job in the midst of a nationwide hiring freeze. The process was grueling but in failure, there are also many lessons learned and luckily, my search ended in success at one of the biggest tech companies in the world. In the past few years, I’ve worked at some of the biggest and best companies in the world making it past several rounds of interviews, impressing my future colleagues, managers, and even VPs so it’s safe to say I know a thing or two about landing a job. Here goes!
B's Guide to Landing Your DREAM JOB PART 1!
If you’re still in college there are a few things I would suggest a few things.
Start interning as soon as possible. The sooner you start practicing interviewing at companies you’re interested in, the better. Also, a few internships on your resume prior to your graduation will help A LOT. Trust me. You’ll have experiences to speak about in all those behavioral interviews as well.
Become friendly with the professors in your field. They can become a good reference for you later. Even if only one to three times a semester go to your professor’s office and chat. They can also put in a good word for you for programs. This brings me to my next point.
In most industries, there are conferences each year that either offer discounts (or free tickets) to college students and/or are directly aimed at college students. If you’re a POC, find programs aimed at diversifying that industry. These conferences often have recruiting opportunities with large companies and most times the interview process won’t be as rigorous compared to an applicant who may have applied online. I would recommend compiling a list at the beginning of each school year with these program names as well as their application due dates.
Don’t join clubs just to have them on your resume. Aim for leadership roles or redirect your time to other personal projects that interest you. It’ll make for a better conversation with your recruiters and hiring managers to say “I built XYZ because I was interested in ABC” rather than “I was just a member of that club and went to the meetings once a month.”
This varies across industries but for the most part, your GPA isn’t all that important especially after you land your first job after college so breathe.
Perfect your resume and this part couldn’t be more critical. In the age of ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) and fierce competition, it’s become vital that your resume can stand out and communicate very clearly how you’re qualified for the job. Here are my resume tips:
My favorite program to create resumes on is Canva. They have a ton of great templates and are super customizable and not to mention, it’s FREE.
Use quantifiable measurements to show your results if possible.
Use action verbs at the beginning of your bullet points. Personally, I believe each description should have at least 3-4 bullet points but never only 1. Here are some of the words on my resume: Constructed, Spearheaded, Managed, Collaborated, and Lead. All of your descriptions should state what you did, how you did it (programs used, methods, etc.), and the outcome.
I personally think every resume should include your: Experience, Skills, Leadership/ Professional Development (for college students this could mean conferences attended, programs, boot camps, etc.), Projects (shows independence and initiative), Contact, and Education. Make sure your LinkedIn is included in your ‘Contact’ section. You should have a personalized LinkedIn link, that’s free.
Your LinkedIn needs to be at 100% completion. This is a place where you can really show off because there are no space limits. This can showcase every job or internship you’ve ever had, every program or project you’ve had an impact on, etc. The better your LinkedIn, the better chance you have a recruiter finding you and inviting you to interview for a role they think would be a good fit.
Your profile picture ideally is a professional one but if not possibly find time to take one in natural daylight with a quality camera and a plain background. I’ve also seen people using AI to now turn regular pics into professional ones.
Interact with posts, comment, and share. This will help get your name and profile circulating.
Announce that you’re looking for a job to your network. Include your resume and what you’re looking for in that post. You never know who might see it.
Grow your network and the easiest place to start is with people you’ve gone to school with and current or previous coworkers.
Put your resume on your LinkedIn profile (You can do this by attaching a media file)
Know your elevator pitch and know it well because every single person you interview with will probably ask you this. My elevator pitch sounds something like this:
I’m Britt and in  June, I graduated from Icy University with a degree in Math and a minor in Sociology. Throughout college, I completed a number of internships doing _______ and have developed skills in _______. When I was a senior I learned about (or developed an interest in) _____  and did _____ to grow my skills or learn more about it. Now that I’ve graduated I’m looking for a role in ______ where I can continue to ______. (My elevator pitch is now different now that I’ve had two full-time roles but you get the point)
Now we apply.
LinkedIn is your friend here and my favorite job posting platform. Set up Job Alerts for companies you’re interested in so that you have a better chance of being an early applicant.
As annoying as this is, you will have to edit your resume for almost every position you apply to. Use the words they use to describe your roles in your work history and remember to always save your resume as a PDF. This definitely will help you get past the ATS system. Remember to adjust the words used in your ‘Skills’ section too but don’t lie. These days, many companies with decent salaries are giving applicants take-home assignments. This applies to your cover letters as well. (I no longer write cover letters though, no one reads them).  I saved every version of my cover letter and could eventually just mix and match paragraphs according to the type of job I was applying to. Of course, you will still have to change some words to best match the position’s job posting.
The LinkedIn stalking begins. Find someone at the company you’ve applied for and invite them to connect but ALWAYS include a note.  In this note, you will give a very brief introduction and your reason for messaging. Mine usually looked something like this: Hi ___, I’m Britt and I recently applied for the ____ position. I’d love to learn more about the department, the team, and the company. Would you have 15 minutes to chat sometime this week or next? Thanks in advance, Britt.
My tip is that you find a manager on the team rather than a recruiter for the company. I find that they never accept invitations but managers usually will.
On this call, you’ll discuss exactly what you mentioned in your opening note, and remember to have prepared questions for them. If you make a good impression, most managers will be willing to forward your resume to the recruiting team.
Let me know if you all want a part 2 on how I prepare for my interviews. I’d say I have an interview success rate of about 90% in the past 2 years!

In the previous post I introduced Greenpeace. These are some wins from June posted on their website.
- Hyundai Construction Equipment commits to help stopping illegal mining in the Amazon
Greenpeace East Asia released the Stop the Excavators report in April of this year, calling to heavy machinery manufacturers to take measures that prevent their equipment being used illegally, in ways that cause violations of human rights.
This exposé revealed that Hyundai Construction Equipment is apparently the favoured brand used in illegal mining in Indigenous Lands in the Amazon.
Hyundai has now announced a series of measures to protect the forest, and will act to prevent this in the future.
- ReconAfrica suspends oil drilling in Okavango Delta
The Canadian oil company ReconAfrica has stopped drilling in Namibia’s Okavango Delta, after it was faced with lawsuits and environmental concerns. For now, the drillings have only been suspended, but this is a step in the right direction, proving that people power can work wonders.
In 2019, ReconAfrica announced fracking in some of Africa's most sensitive (both in terms of water supplies and as livelihoods for the communities in the area) environmental areas. Namibian youth climate activists, indigenous, environmental and human rights groups have been working since then to prevent this from happening.
- ASEAN steps up commitment to end forced labour and human trafficking practices of migrant fishers
In May 2023, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) leaders officially adopted the first ASEAN Declaration on Migrant Fishers Protection in history. This declaration follows many years of active campaigning by human rights advocates and civil society organizations. The campaign aims to push stronger policies to protect Southeast Asian migrants working in fisheries and their rights.
This declaration emphasised that protecting and fulfilling the rights of migrant fishers is an entire migration cycle (recruitment, placement, and repatriation), and so is a shared responsibility among the ASEAN states.
- Local fishers and civil society join forces to reforest mangroves in Senegal
The local community in the traditional fishing town Joal in Senegal started reforesting mangroves in a show of what direct action is really about.
Joal is located near mangrove forests, that are essential breeding grounds for many fish species, and are vital therefore for the fishing communities in those areas. They also store more carbon than tropical forests, and are capable of curbing climate impacts such as floods.
- Dutch creative agencies choose to no longer work with fossil fuel companies
23+ creative agencies in The Netherlands put together a Fossil No Deal, stating that they will stop working with fossil companies and no longer encourage fossil passenger transport. They call it verdrag verantwoord verleiden, a treaty for responsible seduction.
- Thailand applies new PM2.5 ambient standard
In the beginning of June, the new PM2.5 ambient standard was officially applied in Thailand.
The new standard is now 15 μg/m3 for the annual standard and 37.5 μg/m3 for 24-hour standard, which is in keeping with the revised WHO air quality guidelines. This is a big step in the right direction to help reduce PM2.5 and solve air pollution in the country.
Greenpeace Thailand is still not at rest, though, and are continuing to fight to get the PM2.5 at its source, that is from the industries.
- In New Zealand, FSC abandons plans for ‘GE learning’ process
Greenpeace Aotearoa and other environmental organizations have been pressuring the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification scheme to abandon its plans for a ‘Genetic Engineering (GE) learning’ process.
The long-standing principle of not certifying GE trees came under threat  after pressure from FSC certified plantation  company Suzano from Brazil that has a subsidiary doing GE eucalyptus tree research trials (for glyphosate resistance).
- Citizens say yes to net zero emissions in Switzerland
Swiss citizens have voted in favour of a new law to reach net zero emissions by 2050. The new climate law, which was initiated seven years ago, passed a referendum with about 59% of the voters.
Net zero is now enshrined in the “federal law on climate protection, innovation and strengthening energy security“.
Let me know if there's anything else you'd like to see, news from your own countries, or if you'd like to add anything or share.
I'm also here to listen, my DMs and Asks are always open :)
Love you all, and see you next time, be safe!

She-ra (2018) Promotional Merch
As part of an ongoing project to catalogue all the merchandise produced for the 2018 She-ra reboot, this post is going to contain everything I can find that was only available as part of another purchase, promotion, or exclusive gift. None of these are available anymore outside of resale.
Sometimes you have to click photos to see full images, as many are cut off. Any [x]s will lead to the source of the images, usually secondhand listings that will eventually become defunct. I use the best photos I can find.
Con-exclusives (for sale or giveaways) are on their own post. The master post focuses on for-sale merchandise but includes descriptions for everything else. This post acts as support to that, including photos I don't have room for there.
Lootcrate:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Socks, a notebook, and a tumbler were produced, all exclusive to Lootcrate subscribers in their respective month(s). The tumbler was for March, unsure of the months for the other products.
Sonic Kids Meal Toys:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Four figures, two "straw buddies," one inflatable sword, and character profile magnet 3-packs of at least six characters (possibly more. Probably at least one more since Glimmer is missing from the BFS but I haven't seen any not included here yet).
Influencer Exclusives:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This promotional statuette was sent to family bloggers in 2019 to promote season four. It might have also been sent to reviewers in 2018. It's fragile (possibly porcelain) and very rare. Clare has taken more extensive pictures with notes on construction here. [x]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This promotional metal lunchbox was sent to influencers to promote the series in very limited quantities (not to be confused with the insulated fabric lunchbox that was for sale on Amazon). The graphics are stickers rather than directly printed on the lunchbox and it is in mini size. [x]
Recruitment Swag: Stickers
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She-ra stickers promoting the Dreamworks' Career pages were given away with Dreamworks pins, likely to current or prospective employees, though when and why is currently speculative. [x]
Media Press Kits:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Media press kits were sent out to outlets. They included collectors cards (the same cards as were given out at cons, see that post for all the cards), a foam tiara (also given out cons), and buttons (guess where they were given out to the public: cons). A letter (fifth image) was also included in the box, the only completely exclusive part of the box that didn't make it to the public. [x]
A separate kit (sixth image) was sent out to celebrate International Women's Day ahead of the show's premiere, though the contents of it are believed to have been the same and only the box color differed. This was produced by Commuter Industries. Some of the recipients were those bloggers mentioned earlier. Thanks to Clare for finding it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commuter Industries produced further promotional material for IWD 2019 such as digital booklets (Clare has some pulls here). They also made an activity book & character standees for cons.
Reviewer Special Mentions:
They were not exclusive, so they're only getting a small mention, but the Super7 Catra & Adora action figures, as well as limited knee-high socks patterned after She-ra's uniform (with little red capes on the back) were sent in promotional packages to some reviewers. These socks were given out at other promotional events, though I'm currently not certain which and thus whether they were ever available to the general public. While the action figures did go for public sale, they were in very limited quantities, so it felt worth mentioning.
Absolutely Not Merch: Promotional Con Props
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Three large props - a Sword of Protection, a statue of She-ra, and a prop of the Horde Throne - were created for photo ops at conventions and the company that made them has provided photos on their portfolio page. Their current location is unknown. The She-ra statue seems to be based on the same character art that the promotional statuette was made from. Also featured in these images from upper-left-to-right are Aimee Carrero (Adora's VA), Karen Fukuhara (Glimmer's VA), and of course ND Stevenson (creator/showrunner).
