Tipularia discolor, Orchidaceae.
Crane fly orchid is the only member of its genus native to North America, and the first orchid I’ve encountered in habitat out east. Right now undergrowth is pretty much limited to this, some trillium species, bloodroot, and a heaping portion of little brown jug, which I’ll feature soon.
Although this won’t flower until summer — the moths that pollinate it are still mostly overwintering as larvae — its above-ground leaves are already collecting energy for the big event. Green and splotchy above; shiny purple below, and very obvious in these big rhizomal clusters. A few dead flower spikes are still hanging around, but they’re hard to parse.
I did try, but it didn’t go very well. For one thing, the light’s bad. For another, I nearly got whacked by the little fella hanging out in the lower right corner of the first picture. It was cold enough it declined to move on my account, but I’m embarrassed by the close call — a copperhead bite sounds neither fun nor especially affordable, especially given it’d have been my hand. Worth another sweep next time I’m out here, perhaps.

My reading list for 2023. * means at least one queer character. GN means Graphic Novel. Some late night thoughts, I keep circling back to is Agent Park - the specialist from Boston, a
A) legitimate Nancy love interest ?
B) unwitting pawn in a evil plot by Temperance ?
C) totally evil ?
Could be B or C but it could also be A
A lot of what has happened in season 3 has felt like a set up and I think Agent Park is in on it
What I think is happening is Temperance and Park are working together to bring back people they’ve lost.
And that they’re using Nancy and not only for her place in the Hudson bloodline but how to find Charity’s soul fragments and tools they need - like the soul splitter - while also implicating her in Richard Trotts death and making Bess appear like a accomplice.
Season 3 feels like a long con of Nancy Drew
I think that Park threw a lot of stuff at Nancy in their first interaction to see how she reacts - he mentioned how she thinks her name means something- then he sees how town reacts to her and adjusts accordingly
I also think EP2 was a set up for Nancy and the start of the long con to manipulate Nancy also to make her look guilty of a crime she didn’t commit
-Temperance shows up with tip about murder, Park let’s Nancy take it after sidelining her - weird you’d think tips about recent murders should be important
-the evidence she learns puts Trott in 2 different locations and Park says he can only go to 1, being a profiler he knew that the cops going to the wrong one would send Nancy to the other address
-I think Park already knew about Trotts house and that he wasn’t home and that it was a set up/trap - to make Nancy trust Park and have her ruin the evidence inside…
-He’s also the one who pointed her towards Lacy’s podcast and the frozen heart killer
EP3 trusting that Nancy would figure out killers real identity and a way to get him caught - they can later use this against her - Once there were more victims
EP5 This is when things start to feel like the previous episodes was a set up. With the new death Richard was going to go free for a couple reason, like a new killer and that Nancy’s presence in his house made evidence inadmissible…
This makes her feel guilty and desperate so she turns to help from Temperance - doing this also further implicates her and now Bess….
Park almost catches Nancy and Temperance. Trott is revealed to be having a stroke but new security cameras should have caught what was happening before - how lucky Temperances moth wrecked the video camera
EP8 Park shows up at Nancy’s saying Trott died and you can see she’s bothered, seeing as Temperance made her an accomplice in his death - he also gave a brief profile on who would have motive, one reason could be because someone is mad he’s getting out -
Park showing up in the middle of the woods while their supernatural hunting so he can question Temperance but just happens upon Bess - who he believes was intentionally keeping him away from his office before Trott had his stroke - making both Nancy and Bess nervous. or how he’s not a little weirded out because of the light monster - I don’t think things were moving fast enough and this was another way to move things along, he also said Nancy doesn’t fit the profile but says in Trotts case - specifically
*Nancy suspicious face*
Tumblr media
EP9 Nancy’s “trust” in Park gives them access Temperance never would have had, secret entrance that leads to copperheads cage, ability to get close, ask what she’s thinking, question her about love (something they can use against her, she’s already chosen Ace before) and the ability to steer her in directions they want like in EP 2,3&5
I think figuring out how to find Charity’s soul was a big part of their plan for Nancy - They knew she’d want to save anyone she could and now that they have a solid lead on how to find the remaining pieces of Charitys soul, I don’t think it’s surprising that something is causing a big distraction in the next episode, besides Ace missing - Temperance is making a move.
The question remains, is Agent Park in on it ? Or is he just an easy going guy who wants to date Nancy?
Maybe the morning will help it make sense to me lol

National Moth Week part 2
Sorry it has taken me a while to post this next series of shots. I am starting another semester of college and had some business to attend too. During mothing events you never quite know what will show up. This time we had very few moths show up. We had a few but not very many like I have experienced in different outings.
Tumblr media
This one was the most impressive one I saw on the three days of mothing I attended. Here we have the Zebra Conchylodes Moth. You can really tell where it gets its name. This is one I am still learning about. Moths and Butterflies are just one of my many insect obsessions next to dragonflies. Dragonflies are my favorite insect to obsess over at times. Moths are one of my favorite types of insects for they come in all sorts of colors and shapes. Moths are an amazing group. They maybe unappealing to some but in my mind they are quite diverse and really something to take note of. I love most insects for their features and the way they live. Insects are some of the most misunderstood animals but I love them. I am always standing up to the lesser appreciated animals. They deserve a far better reputation than what they are given. Insects are pretty incredible once you get to know them.
Tumblr media
Sometimes more things besides beetles will show up to your light trap as in this case where we had a Little Mesquite Cicada show up. These are Texas’ tinest cicada. They are pretty cute and not as big as some of the others like the Superb Dog Day Cicada, Resh Cicada, or the Sissors-Grinder Cicada. This one is only about an inch. I love cicadas for they just make up part of the symphony of nature. They are a true icon of the southern summers. I have lived in Texas all my life and every year I get so excited for their return in the mid to late summer. They are one of my favorite insects. I don’t find them annoying like some people say. I really like the way they sound; it is just part of being home to me. It is as familiar to me as my favorite story. Cicadas are so amazing and a fun fact is that they do not eat but they drink sap from trees. They will not attack the trees or plants. They are not really a pest at all. They are a major food source for snakes and other animals. Snakes like the Copperhead can eat a ton of Cicadas each summer. They will wait at the base of a tree and wait for one to fall and when it does the snake will make good use of it as nourishment.
Tumblr media
Here is another one we saw called the Resh Cicada. There are a lot of Cicadas in Texas and this one is one of the most common that I find each year. I have quite a few on my life list so far and we are now winding down from Cicada season and bug season. I love this time of the year for you start to see an interesting change in insects. In late fall you will see more pollinators than anything once the late summer plants begin to bloom. Texas is a truly wonderful state and I love to explore it when ever I get the chance. There is always something new and exciting to see when you are here. Some areas may not look like much but if you change your perspective just a little bit a whole new door will open to you. Nature is an amazing thing and we must all do our part to protect it and keep it safe so future generations can experience it too. So until next time I will see you on the trail.
