the little corella, also known as the bare-eyed cockatoo, is a relatively small cockatoo species found in australia and new guinea. they are a highly social bird, and often congregate in groups that can reach the thousands. these flocks can include multiple other cockatoo species. when playing or gathering to feed, these cockatoos are noisy and communicate through high-pitched shrieks. the little corella can be distinguished from similar species by the distinct bare blue skin around their eyes. they feed primarily on grains and seeds, and are sometimes considered agricultural pests, as they feed on cereal crops. they are somewhat common in aviculture; while they are legal to be kept as pets, and are actually still trapped in the wild legally due to their status as pests, they can be demanding and hard to care for. without a companion bird, they often do poorly in captivity.

Visit Friends in Australia Quebec Two corellas crowd a lorikeet family at breakfast. A confused kookaburra flies over to watch the action until it gets a little too close. Although the kookaburra makes some token attempts to chase the lorikeets away, I think he really enjoys their antics. He's the teacher at their Sunday school picnic almost every day. And the Loris seem to enjoy teasing him. Note that they are plucking his feathers at 2:30

#1991 - Cacatua sanguinea - Little Corella

AKA short-billed corella, bare-eyed cockatoo, blood-stained cockatoo, and little cockatoo, and Birdirra among the Yindjibarndi people of the central and western Pilbara, who would keep them as pets, cook and eat them, and use downy feathers in traditional ceremonies and dances. Cacatua sanguinea, means 'Blood-stained Cockatoo' and refers to the dark pink markings between the eye and bill. There were first scientifically described by the British ornithologist John Gould in 1843.

Small cockatoos similar in appearence to the Long-billed Corella and the Western Corella. The five subspecies are found over most of Australia and New Guinea, with the exception of thick forest. They usually fly in large flocks, sometimes in their thousands, and their screaming audible from kilometers away.

In South Australia, little corellas are considered "unprotected native fauna" and may be shot, trapped or gassed by landowners.
