Hino Contessa 1300 Coupé
The name Hino was taken from the homonymous town in the Tokyo prefecture where the company's headquarters were (and still are). His first steps were to create powerful military vehicles for the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Once the greatest war of all time was over, it dedicated itself to the manufacture of diesel engines, trucks and buses. The post-war Japanese automobile industry underwent a major transformation thanks to the numerous agreements that many manufacturers made with car brands in Europe and the United States. Hino was no different. The operations were going from strength to strength, they had already earned an important place in the industry and even theirs was the first trolleybus in the history of Japan. The brand wanted to expand its business by launching into the world of passenger cars. Already under the name of Hino Motors, it signed a collaboration agreement with Renault in February 1953 and two months later they began to manufacture the Renault 4CV (also called Renault 4/4) under license. In Japan it was marketed as the Hino PA and some 35,000 units were sold in the 10 years it was in production. The French brand ceased production of the Renault 4CV in 1961, so Hino set out to take another step in the automotive world: manufacture its own car. They contacted the prolific Italian designer Giovanni Michelotti, who had worked with brands as relevant as Ferrari, Lancia, Maserati, Alpine or Triumph, to draw the silhouette of the new Japanese car.
The Hino Contessa 900 used the base of the Renault 4CV but at first glance no one could recognize that link due to the charming sedan body designed by the Turin designer. Renault's 35 hp 0.9-litre engine was positioned at the rear and was sufficient to animate the rear axle with the 750 kg that the car weighed. Shortly after, the Hino Contessa 900 Sprint was launched, a coupe version that reduced the weight by 100 kg and had an engine powered by Nardi up to 45 CV. With an attractive design, greater habitability -it offered space for five passengers, one seat more than the 4CV- and the proven reliability of its engine, it was not surprising that the Contessa achieved good sales results. 47,299 units were marketed between 1961 and 1964, a small part of them manufactured beyond the Japanese borders. The great reception in the market of its first car encouraged Hino to develop the second generation. Once again, Michelotti was in charge of its design, who had an overwhelming personality. The front with double optics and no grille was clearly reminiscent of the Chevrolet Corvair while the general lines were similar to other models designed by Michelotti such as the Triumph 2000. The Italian designer had been inspired by the English and American cars for this Japanese model with a French engine. Long live globalization! The Hino Contessa 1300 was bigger and heavier than its predecessor, but also more powerful by using a 1.3-liter 55 hp engine from the Renault 8. It began its commercial journey in 1964 and a few months later the sports version with bodywork arrived. two-door, the Contessa 1300 Coupé with 65 CV. The second generation of the Contessa was exported to several countries around the world, being manufactured in Japan, Israel and New Zealand.

Top row: Magazine article and poster from the Splash Grand Prix
Middle row: Magazine cover and poster from the California Amphibious Racing Circuit
Bottom row: Posters for the Japan Amphibious Endurance Tournament
With the rising popularity in amphibious cars, it only made natural sense to try and push them to their limits, to see just how fast they could go over both land and sea. As a result, several amphibious racing circuits arose all around the world. We've got some advertising material here, as well as some details and descriptions about some vehicles from three of those circuits.
The Splash Grand Prix was started in 1947 by a group of New England amphibious automobile enthusiasts who wanted to see just how fast their boat-cars could go. The result was the Splash Grand Prix, a 5-lap race around a course that takes place on equal amounts land and sea. While not as fast as some of the other circuits, it's been described as more high intensity, shorter-range event, with the winding spaghetti-like roads of the New England area being the perfect challenge for drivers to navigate. The event is a very friendly and humble affair, with people bringing their tents, grills, and coolers in a huge picnic/cookoff style event that culminates into watching the big race. Cars are usually modified or custom-built roadsters, though there have been a few modern-style entries (but nothing too flashy, as there are strict component and weight requirements). The red car in the article to the left is the Hammnicar III, built by John M. Hammond the Fourth in 1982, as a tribute to the then-lost Hammnicar I, and the seldom-seen Hammnicar II. It was used in the Splash Grand Prix in the 1982, 1983, and 1984 seasons, winning the first two, but by 1984, it was out of date. The Hammnicar II was based off of a VW Superbeetle, not unlike the Catfish, but was designed as a tandem-control vehicle, powered by a Chevrolet Corvair Turbo 180 hp turbo motor, rather than the original Volkswagen flat 4. It competed in the super-modified 200 hp class, and was able to achieve speeds on the water of up to 40 knots, while able to do 120 mph on land.
On the other side of the country, we'll find the California Amphibious Racing Circuit. Founded in 1954, you'll find that this event is the polar opposite of the Splash Grand Prix. Loud, bombastic cars with sleek designs and souped-up engines are the stars of the show, and sponsorships litter the sides of the cars like a NASCAR vehicle. Everyone and their grandmother is trying to sell you something at the CARC, and the atmosphere is intoxicatingly overwhelming. The race is televised across the country, with millions tuning in to see these amphibious beasts rip across the sand and surf at speeds that can reach over 130 mph! In 2003, Thompson Hydrosports, a well-known homologation manufacturer, finally decided to dip it's toes into building it's own entry into the 2004 California Circuit season, building the Thompson Tornado (the vehicle on the magazine to the left), powered by the homologation 350 Chevrolet, machined to produce 500 horsepower. The vehicle itself was built from fiberglass and aluminum, and had a top speed on the water of 90 knots, while on land it could achieve 160 mph. The Tornado would become infamous once it entered production in the next year, for being super fast, agile, but most importantly, dangerous. of the 52 built, including the 2 prototypes, 31 of them were damaged beyond repair, or lost in accidents, with a total of 8 fatal accidents killing one or both of the crew. The most notable of the accidents being of the 41st production vehicle, driven by Robert Hall, and James Williams as Navigator, was lost in an 87 knot roll, the vehicle disintegrating around the crew, with nothing of the wreck being recovered, other than two of the wheels.
Crossing the pond, you'll find the Japan Amphibious Endurance Tournament, an affair squarely in the middle of the SGP and the CARC in terms of flashiness. While a little late to the party in 1970, it is nonetheless a beloved event enjoyed by racing enthusiasts across the globe, with events being televised across the world. While CARC vehicles are built for speed, JAET vehicles are built for endurance, boasting innovative designs meant to be efficient and comfortable while still being powerful. Being an endurance tournament, the track usually spans the entire length of Japan in both land and sea, meaning the races can sometimes take over 2 days to fully complete. Pit stops are placed at key points in the race (usually in the transitions between ground and water), but some legs of the race can result in the drivers going for over 8 hours straight! The car featured in the leftmost advertisement is the 1999 ALIAH, developed by the Japanese Hydronautics Committee in 1998. A non-government entity, like the FIA, the JHC built the ALIAH as a successor to Project Kikka, an unbuilt prototype for a 200 mph on road racer, and a 100 knot superboat. ALIAH was built to succeed in nearly as many areas, using a folding wheel mechanism, to allow all 6 wheels to be hidden away to allow for higher speeds on the water. The actual ALIAH travelled up to 185 mph on land, and 83 knots on the water. During testing, however, the vehicle had an engine fire, from it's twin Toyota 1GZ-FE V12 engines, that produced 800 hp each, to the rear 4 wheels, or the hydrojets at the back. Posthumously, the gearbox was found to be at fault, though the EFS (Engine Fire Suppressants) were used, and saved the boat. This Magazine cover shows the post-fire repairs, missing aerodynamic panels, and allowing the internals to be seen. The ALIAH was used to demonstrate the CLASS VI racing series, and CLASS VI is still ongoing, though the current dominant force as of the 2023 season are turbine-electric hybrids, allowing for intense acceleration on land, and intense acceleration on ground. The ALIAH is on display in Karuizawa, at the JHC's headquarters/museum for hydro-racing. It is on display in situ post testing, with the fire damage still visible in places, though repairs had been made after the fire, which are also visible.

Documenting Vic Bennett Motors Carleton Place - Des and Jean Moore Clippings
Rick Roberts said:
Interesting to see the Vic Bennett Motors 1964 advert. I remember my father deliberating whether to buy the 1964 Corvair or the Chevy II. The debate went on for days. He eventually bought the Chevy II. Of course, as a 10 year old who was smitten by all things automotive, i spent quite a bit of time in the dealership while this was going on. My vote was for the Nassua blue 1964…

BACK IN BLACK and Rockin' the ’70's!
1979 Camaro Z28 - Cody's Restoration
The Chevrolet Camaro is a mid-size American automobile manufactured by Chevrolet, classified as a pony car. It first went on sale on September 29, 1966, for the 1967 model year and was designed to compete with the Ford Mustang. The Camaro shared its platform and major components with the Firebird, produced by General Motors' Pontiac division that was also introduced for 1967.
Four distinct generations of the Camaro were developed before production ended in 2002. The nameplate was revived on a concept car that evolved into the fifth-generation Camaro; production started on March 16, 2009.
On June 28, 1966, General Motors held a live press conference in Detroit's Statler-Hilton Hotel. It was the first time that 14 cities were connected in real-time for a press conference via telephone lines. Chevrolet general manager Pete Estes started the news conference stating that all attendees of the conference were charter members of the Society for the Elimination of Panthers from the Automotive World and that this would be the first and last meeting of SEPAW. Estes then announced a new car line, project designation XP-836, with a name that Chevrolet chose in keeping with other car names beginning with the letter C such as the Corvair, Chevelle, Chevy II, and Corvette. He claimed the name, "suggests the comradeship of good friends as a personal car should be to its owner" and that "to us, the name means just what we think the car will do... go." The Camaro name was then unveiled. Automotive press asked Chevrolet product managers, "what is a Camaro?" and were told it was "a small, vicious animal that eats Mustangs," an obvious reference to the Ford Mustang, which created and dominated the Pony car market GM was entering.

Chevrolet Electrovair II Concept, 1966. What it says really, an electric Corvair prototype that nobody much was interested in though electrifying the Corvair made good sense. The Corvair was the lightest Chevrolet at the time and swapping out the out the rear mounted flat-six for a 115-horsepower AC induction motor with batteries in the front boot was a straightforward job. The Electrovair II a range of 40-80 miles, a top speed of 80mph, and a 0-60 time of 16 seconds

Here is a special edition post, simply because I haven’t posted in a fair bit. This is a lovely Japanese woodblock print by Sekino Junichiro titled "In Vancouver, Canada". The car almost looks like it could be going backwards or forwards! A rather unique perspective here, I can’t decide if it’s a Citroën, a Corvair, or a Jaguar sedan, but that’s really not important. What’s important is on television! A closeup of a warrior in an Akira Kurosawa film?! Perhaps! This print is currently offered on eBay by nippon_gallery in Japan. Which makes me wonder if Vancouver has ever seen this print before?! Well, you have now!
A bio of Junichiro Sekino has been posted at https://www.roningallery.com/artists/sekino-junichiro, here is an excerpt:
Junichiro Sekino was born in Aomori prefecture. He began making woodblock prints while still in middle school before formally pursuing etching with Junzo Kon. Active in the print scene, Sekino participated in the art shows Chokojuto (1932) and Shin Hanga (1935), exhibiting with the Nihon Hanga Kyokai from 1932 forward. After winning the Teiten prize for etching in 1936, he moved to Tokyo in 1939. Junichiro Sekino continued his studies at the Etching Institute of Takeo Nishida, where he also trained in oil painting and drawing. Sekino commenced his study of woodblock prints with Koshiro Onchi and soon joined the Nihon Hanga Kyokai in 1938, followed by the Kokugakai in 1940. He exhibited worldwide, winning particular acclaim in the United States for his woodblock prints following World World II. In 1958, the Japan-America Society brought Sekino to the United States, where he taught at Oregon State University in 1963. Upon returning to Japan, he assumed a position at Kobe University in 1965 and received the medal of the Imperial Household Agency in 1981...
Based on this bio, I wonder if the print was created when he was on the West Coast, some time from 1958-1965, or perhaps on a return visit some other time prior to his death in 1988. A lovely print, from a Japanese master!

By David Ashton
When I first compiled this list, it was really for my own benefit so I could have a quick reference to all of the major American muscle cars produced between the mid-60s and mid-70s. Basically, the most popular makes and years for that golden age of high displacement muscle machines. Now it’ s time to pass it on to you good folks, so you have a quick reference to start to see the most popular muscle cars at a glance.
Now, I know there will be a couple of exceptions here and there missing, so if you see any that are not included, please comment below so that we can add them and make the best list on the net of all things muscle car. For the Ultimate list of muscle cars go here .
