Why I'm starting my 2024 "temperature" blanket early...
I like October.
That could be the most basic of answers, and I definitely could leave it there. But that would not accurately explain the heart behind the year long project I'm about to start. So buckle in, if you like. Or don't; you do you.
I've known for awhile that I wanted to do a variation on a temperature blanket for 2024. The last time I did a temperature blanket was in 2017 - and it was my first! I knew for my next one, I wanted it to be a project to honor a special year. 2024 was planned since I got married in 2019. This is all probably starting to make more sense now.
So yes, I got married in October - for the sake of not putting too much of my information online I won't share the exact day, but it is mid October. And 2024 will be our 5 year anniversary. I debated working the project from January to December for the whole year, but I changed my mind to running it from Anniversary to Anniversary.
There's a couple advantages to that:
For one, I selected Toni Lipsey's linen square stitch pattern (it's also the one she is doing this year), and I worried that in effort to try to stay up to date, I'd end up cramming the largest sections in at the end of the month. Running the months from mid-to-mid, I've inherently made it more loose and forgiving of the deadlines. It's normal to get a bit behind and need to catch up, but it'll hopefully help me to not have looming end of month deadlines constantly.
The pattern
The second advantage is that I'll have a new blanket by the end of 2024! With October as a final goal, I'll have two months to catch up if I need to, make a border if I so desire, and sew the squares together. There's a lot of grace in that timeline, and I'd love to have a special afghan to gift my partner on Christmas or New Years. I mean he'll see it in progress, that's inevitable, but the finished object in its final presentation? That's so special. Right in time for cuddling up by the fire too since we are in the Northern Hemisphere.
Oh, I am also not exactly doing a temperature blanket either. I've set up daily reminders for myself to look at the sky, and I plan to use the alert not to check online for a number. I want to connect with our Earth and create a special moment each day to admire the planet we call home. My color palette is to be based on the weather and color of the sky each day - whatever the overall vibe feels like since of course it can change from hour to hour. From sunny to cloudy to rainy, and in between, the final piece will be a blend of blues and greys. Because I do, in fact, love the colors of the sky.
The yarn
It's a much smaller color palette than the first time I tried one of these, so my hope is that each of the shades will have a decent spread - certainly not equal to each other, but definitely not lost among the others. I'm adoring the greys. 😍
It's Stylecraft Special DK. I looked around out a few other acrylics and some wool and cotton blends, but ultimately it came down to care instructions and spread of colors. I most especially wanted the blanket to be easy care. We have three dogs so washing and drying were preferable in this case. I also really wanted to use a Sock-DK weight yarn so I didn't end up with a blanket the size of a house.
Tumblr media
I did however take a gamble, buying this yarn without trying it first. I've only heard good things, which is promising. And I've received my initial shipping notification, so I am super excited for the skeins to arrive!
I've shared my color scheme above. Each square is going to be 32 rows, and at the end I will have 12 squares for that final assembly part of the project.
Project Tag is going to be #SkyBlanket2024 for any updates along the way.
I'm VERY excited for this one.

Is it weird that I'm crying over yarn?
This afternoon I talked for over half an hour with the owner of the yarn store in my city. During our chat I told her that I recently found out I'm not allergic to lanolin (wool's fat), so I'm no longer limited to only using cotton and cotton/acrylic mixed yarns. She walked to the back of the store and came back with lots of swatches and a couple of beanies, so I could see and feel different types of animal fiber yarns.
She recommended I'd try this merino & baby alpaca blend (see picture above), so I bought two skeins and started on a beanie this evening.
My God. This material is silky smooth and feels so freaking nice and cosy. All my life I stayed away from animal fiber yarns, because I figured I'd be allergic to it (since I'm allergic to many -many- things/animals). When the allergy test for lanolin came back negative, I was so surprised.
So now I'm just sitting on the couch, knitting, with tears in my eyes. I've done fiber arts since 2019 and I'm overjoyed that I get to discover a whole new world of materials. I know it probably sounds stupid, but this is something I thought would never happen. I feel so incredibly lucky and grateful 🐑

This series of images show unstretched canvases and textile art. Cali has been painting on unstretched canvas, and has expressed an interest in presenting these works in that form. Unstretched paintings are very material-forward in that we are forced to see them, first and foremost, as objects hanging on the wall (as opposed to windows opening onto a scene). Here are a few examples, beginning with Minimalist painter Robert Ryman’s tiny, barebones work of brush marks on rough, unsized canvas, displayed inside of a protective frame. Richard Tuttle’s Cloth Octagonal is something else entirely, a shaped soft object dyed green and attached to the wall with nails or pins. Mary Heilmann may have been inspired by Tuttle’s work, but her work feels more like a painting in its materials and rectangular shape. Heilmann’s later canvases are stretched in the conventional manner.
Richard Hambleton was a graffiti artist, in the 1980s, whose “Shadowman” figures appeared on walls of the Lower East Side of Manhattan. His work made the jump to galleries along with that of the better known Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Carole Harris is a textile artist; it has long been the norm to display tapestries and weavings by simply hanging them. The last artist, Michael Luchs, was deeply concerned with surfaces and textures; his paintings have a fragility that requires some sort of support, but using a stretcher or conventional frame would seem to be out of the question. Mounting them on painted plywood, as seen here, allows the viewer direct, unimpeded access to his layered, painted, hole-punched surface, along with rough details such as the dangling yarn of his unravelling canvas.

Shree Saastha Textiles Top Manufacturing Company in Mumbai
India’s textiles sector is one of the oldest industries in the Indian economy, dating back to several centuries. The industry is extremely varied, with hand-spun and hand-woven textiles sectors at one end of the spectrum, with the capital-intensive sophisticated mills sector at the other end. The fundamental strength of the textile industry in India is its strong production base of a wide range of fibre/yarns from natural fibres like cotton, jute, silk and wool, to synthetic/man-made fibres like polyester, viscose, nylon and acrylic.
The decentralised power looms/ hosiery and knitting sector form the largest component of the textiles sector. The close linkage of textiles industry to agriculture (for raw materials such as cotton) and the ancient culture and traditions of the country in terms of textiles makes it unique in comparison to other industries in the country. India’s textiles industry has a capacity to produce a wide variety of products suitable for different market segments, both within India and across the world.
In order to attract private equity and employee more people, the government introduced various schemes such as the Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks (SITP), Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS) and Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel (MITRA) Park scheme.
The Indian cloth and vesture assiduity is anticipated to grow at 10 CAGR from 2019- 20 to reach US$ 190 billion by 2025- 26. India has a 4 share of the global trade in fabrics and vesture.   India is the world’s largest patron of cotton. Estimated product stood at362.18 lakh bales during cotton season 2021- 22. Domestic consumption for the 2021- 22 cotton season is estimated to be at 338 lakh bales. Cotton product in India is projected to reach7.2 million tonnes (43 million bales of 170 kg all) by 2030, driven by adding demand from consumers. In FY23, exports of readymade garments (RMG) cotton including accessories stood atUS$7.68 billion till January 2023. It's anticipated to surpass US$ 30 billion by 2027, with an estimated4.6-4.9 share encyclopaedically. Product of fibre in India reached2.40 MT in FY21(till January 2021), while for yarn, the product stood at 4,762 million kgs during the same period.
Natural fibres are regarded as the backbone of the Indian cloth assiduity, which is anticipated to grow from US$ 138 billion Tous$ 195 billion by 2025.   India’s cloth and vesture exports (including crafts) stood atUS$44.4 billion in FY22, a 41 increase YoY. During April- October in FY23, the total exports of fabrics stood atUS$21.15 billion. India’s cloth and vesture exports to the US, its single largest request, stood at 27 of the total import value in FY22. Exports of readymade garments including cotton accessories stood atUS$6.19 billion in FY22.   India’s fabrics assiduity has around4.5 crore employed workers including35.22 lakh handloom workers across the country.

Why Should You Invest in Indian Online Yarn Market?
Indian textile space is one of the largest in the world. It contributes 2.3% to the country’s GDP, 12% to export revenue, and 13% to industrial production. The textile manufacturers in India primarily focus on selling cotton and silk to other countries.
Why Fabric Manufacturers in Delhi are the Powerhouse in India?
The Indian textile sector has recorded a significant increase in international investment. The industry attracted around US$ 3.75 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in the last two years. This has made India the fourth largest exporter of home, fashion, and industrial textile materials. With five crore direct workers and six crore indirect employees through affiliated businesses, the textile companies in India are the second largest employers in the country.
With the advent of online trading platforms like TEXchange, and looking at the emerging textile innovations in the country, we believe fabric manufacturers in Delhi will be the powerhouse of textile exports and consumption.
Reasons Why You Should Invest in Indian Online Yarn Market
The CAGR of the textile companies in India is expected to be valued at USD 190 billion by 2026. This was a huge increase from 2019-2020, when it was valued at USD 75 billion.
Men’s woven fabric manufacturers in India comprise the fastest-growing segment. The country’s diversified garment needs, global fashion exposure, the shift in consumer taste, and the growing population directly contribute to the long-term demand for cotton suppliers.
India has the biggest raw material base supplying all types of natural and artificial fiber and yarn, including silk, cotton, jute, wool, acrylic, viscose, polyester filament, and polyester staple.
India has the largest English-speaking human resource, mainly composed of well-educated and skilled youth. It is advantageous for global textile companies to set up fabric sourcing and manufacturing operations in Delhi.
Woven fabric manufacturers in India charges are much lower than manufacturers in Vietnam and China. The cost of production has a direct impact on their prices.
The long tradition of textile manufacturing and production supports the vast availability of skills and infrastructure for textile production and distribution.
India is one of the few countries that enjoy preferential market access to more than fifty countries and their textile markets under fifteen trade agreements.
The supportive and stable Government of India is instrumental to the country’s economic and political stability, which is a primary reason other countries prefer importing textiles from India.
The Government of India has enforced a number of measures and laws to improve the capabilities of the Indian textile industry. For instance, the GOI has significantly increased the budget to improve the technical textile sector, such as medical, industrial, and eco-friendly fabrics.
The Indian Government’s PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme has created a league for employment opportunities through textile production.
If you are looking for Fabric manufacturers in Delhi without the interference of traders and brokers, join TEXchange and directly communicate with top textile companies and manufacturers in India.

Inspired by stories of historical and contemporary Black cowboys, when no softness came reimagines the trope of heroic male victors riding on horseback by illustrating a moment of respite and ease. Like many of Diedrick Brackens’s weavings, this scene of intimacy and tenderness creates personal mythologies that center queer Black identity.
In celebration of Pride 2021, we’ll be spotlighting LGBTQ+ artists and themes currently on view in The Slipstream: Reflection, Resilience, and Resistance in the Art of Our Time, an exhibition that offers space to stay grounded, gather strength, and consider paths into the future.

I’ve finished like. 10 knitting projects this year. It’s only July!
3 of them are small but even those I feel damn good about—a pair of socks (an involved project even when they’re simple), a pair of stirrup/yoga socks, and a hat that I copycatted off an existing one
2 shawls, one in bulky weight and one in DK
FIVE garments—1) a simple crop top, 2) a raglan tee shirt in cotton (my poor wrists), 3) a v-neck tank top (JUST finished), 4) a cropped long-sleeve pullover, and 5) a cropped cardigan that had a total of NINE lace panels and a construction method that was new to me and therefore a challenge.
My WIPs include: 1) another crop top that I just need to knit the straps for but it’s painful, 2) a tee shirt that I’m going slow on because I def won’t be able to wear it till it’s cold because the yarn is acrylic which doesn’t breathe and fuck if I’m gonna sweat more, 3) a garter and lace shawl that I’m probably gonna have to put back on hiatus because I don’t think I’ll have enough yarn to finish but the yarn is from an Italian company that I emailed today to ask about ordering more and I can’t just go back to the store where I bought it because the store is in Venice, 4) another shawl that I might unravel for a tank top maybe, and 5) the Ursa cropped sweater, which I’m casting on tonight
A combination of more “free time” and a job that lets me sit down at a desk brought us this. In 2019 I finished about 15 projects the entire year and those were mostly accessories (though my count might be off because I didn’t document all of them). But still, I feel accomplished.

Daybreak Technologies 1 & 2 (ash, blown glass, acrylic, yarn, found objects, copper, woven cotton and polyester) Daybreak Technologies foregrounds the role of sexual violence as an unseen driving force in political mechanizations, referencing the scandal of financier Jeffrey Epstein collecting documentation of sex abuse for blackmailing prominent politicians. The now infamous temple-structure where these atrocities took place on Epstein’s private island are depicted in a pair of new tapestry works, which each incorporate hanging glass elements. Using the image of the temple as a totem for a miasma of institutionalized violence, the cultural and spiritual weight of the Epstein scandal is reclaimed from the meaninglessness and vulgarity of the frenetic news cycle and social media scroll feed. Mellifluous glass forms stalactite-like shapes which protrude from woven fabric. During the glass-blowing process, ashes salvaged from a ceremony executed by the artist in November 2019 were incorporated into the pieces, forming glistening speckles and striations in the glass work. The works are particularly pertinent in the era of the Q-anon internet conspiracy, and seek to re-appropriate the conversation surrounding political blackmail and sex trafficking in the highest offices from it's current spiraling, right-wing rhetoric. The works exist in conversation with my larger oeuvre in their bid to draw awareness to sexual abuse as a driving political and spiritual force, and to the inextricable link between individual and collective healing.

1 December 2019
So, I’ve started my first ever Christmas/birthday gift knit!
I’m making the Midsummer Night crescent shawl by Olga Bochkareva. It comes in Russian, and has an English translation available! It’s 300 Ruble, which I was convinced meant Russian Bucks, because it’s abbreviated to RUB and I was unaware Ruble is the Russian Currency. The more you know. It’s available on Ravellry btw
I’m using the “Shawl in a Cake” by Lion Brand, in the colour ‘Jade Pool’. I’ve got to say, this yarn is really not worth the $20 price tag imo. It’s essentially acrylic/cotton fibre loosely wrapped around a white yarn. I think I’ll be investing in my own teal gradient fibre and spinning my own yarn next time. Not really worth my money, so far. Too patchy as well, but I mean, the recipient doesn’t know what hand spun feels like, so she’s super happy with this yarn but...I’ve felt and worked with better manufactured yarn for under $10.
