I don't have formal training in character design, but it has always been a passion of mine. With that said, here is my attempt at designing the Patakis in “The Patakis“ based on what Craig Bartlett has said in interviews. I really wish we could still get this spin-off and see more of Craig's genius. Slide 1: Depicts a hypothetical punk-rock logo surrounded by doodles.
Slide 2: A look at my designs for Helga's family.
Slide 3: Teen Helga. The goal was to make her tomboyish with a bit of an edge (ripped jeans and hat).
Slide 4: Beeper King Himself. His design was inspired by Craig Bartlett’s notes.
Slide 5: Miriam Pataki. Since she is 12-stepping and working at a T.V. station, I designed Miriam to reflect someone getting back on her feet -- even gave her a sobriety coin (she totally earned it).
Slide 6: Olga Pataki. The trickiest to redesign, but overall, the goal was to make her a bit more mature than before. What do you guys think? It's still a work in progress, but I hope y'all like them.

The perks of working at the airport is getting to meet some people you didn’t think you’d run into!
I met Craig Bartlett last week! Honestly might even say he’s one of my heroes! Had a great chat with him about a lot of things in such a short amount of time, thanked him for the Christmas episode with Mr. Hyunh’s story about the war in Vietnam. It’s kinda a weird coincidence since I’m working at a Vietnamese restaurant to improve my non-existent language and cultural aspects of being Viet when I met him.
I recognized him and doubted myself, but then I saw he was wearing a Hey Arnold! backpack with a charm from a HA! fanartist named Kinako, and then I Knew. If you’re reading this Craig, it was really nice meeting you! Hoping to have a longer chat someday in the future! (Also who was that other artist you mentioned?)

(Archive) Christmas TV special of the Day: Arnold's Christmas (1996)
Originally posted: December 22nd, 2021 I mean…we're having quite a few of those so the moniker needed to change. It also helps this is mostly a regular episode of Hey Arnold!…albeit an outstanding one of full length. Probably the most significant quality of the series is how masterfully it balanced the more surreal and cartoony elements with the more grounded problems and storylines of the cast. Unlike many other cartoons of the time, even including adult animation, it managed to make a relatable sense of belivability to many of it's more outlandish characters, which established it as an interesting cartoon proponent of magic realism.
That said, the Christmas special is fairly devoid of the more fantastic elements and it paints a heartwarming tale in the back of a haunting reality of America. The very fact this episode alluded to to the Vietnam war(albeit not by name) and the separation of families due to the armed conflict is a tasteful exploration of heavy subjects through the eyes of urban children, something the show is an expert at. Mr. Hyunh's backstory, while told in a very abridged fashion to fit the show's run time, is a fairly tragic setup that no doubt mirrors at least some of the realities of Vietnamese immigrants from the postwar. His plight hits straight to the heart, you just want to give the poor man a hug. And Arnold being the wholesome kid he is can't help but want to give him a Christmas miracle: to reunite him with his daughter.
The really beautiful thing about this is how simple in execution it all is. You don't need to make a Christmas special to be bombastic or overly colorful to make it mean something. In fact, it's the altruistic act of giving away which allows the characters to make that miracle happen, not divine intervention but the goodwill of people. In plural, because Helga's more comedic sideplot ends up intertwining in a meaningful way as she's the one to save the day. This series really had something special.
