Celebrated my dad's 70th BDay this past weekend at his place in Kansas. My brother, my sister, all of her kids, my partner and lil guy, All together celebrating fall and family. I'm getting mushy in my old age. I just love this time of year. It was so fun having everyone together. The little ones wanted some jack o lanterns, so I carved a few... After I made my pumpkin helmet of course. Went for a more classic & easy approach to these, fast and fun is often times the way to go. All of these pumpkins were from Britts Farm in Kansas. . . . #halloween #ghost #trickortreat #demon #ghoul #creepshow #talesfromthecrypt #halloweenmakeup #halloweencostume #pumpkins #autumnvibes #horrormovies #halloweenparty #horrorfan #horrorart #halloweendecor #horrormovie #jackolantern #michaelmyers #spookyseason #horrormovies #fall #autum #pumpkinspice #carve #art #artist (at Manhattan, Kansas) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cj5kBzkroDA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

brief descriptions under the cut. (if any of my beloved players are seeing this, no peeking! here thar be spoilers.)
bellamy hollis, gangrel - hosts the local radio show Calling All Creeps. the creepshow is an organized effort among the anarchs, used to drum up fake rumors of supernatural events in the city to muddle the SI's legitimate leads
francesca "chess" giovanni, hecata- after making it to ghouldom but being deemed unworthy of embrace by the family, she secured the embrace for herself through other channels (secret lamia) and was disowned for it. makes her living predicting people's deaths for them
ayoni olowe, tremere* - actually a salubri but doesn't know it. believes she's the childe of the tremere lord who kidnapped and brainwashed her. stuck in a blood contract of loyalty to her "sire" and the tremere. no third eye yet
kismet, toreador - keeper of elysium. deaf and non-verbal, communicates through american sign language, iranian sign language, or telepathy. noddist scholar and archivist. achieved golconda
florian foster, thin-blood (malkavian) - saddest wettest little guy. accidental embrace that got his sire killed. grandchilde to the anarch baron and forced to accept a joke of a primogen position. punching bag of the camarilla. being blackmailed by another councilor using his ghouled ex as leverage

hi!! i was wondering if you could give some movie, book, tv show, or fic recs for my spooky szn media list this year? a lot of the things you write are absolutely the kind of vibe that im going for, so i figured you would be the best person to ask for those kind of things. im very new to the horror genre (just stepping out of slashers and into magical realism and paranormal type things). and ofc you don’t have to, but id love to know what some of your favorite twilight zone episodes are!
no pressure to respond, you were just the first person i thought of when it came to asking recs from, since your taste seems to be the same niche that i have.
(btw im 18+ so you don’t have to worry about giving tame recs)
I love you for asking this because it gets me excited for the season and reminds me of things I need to revisit. Okay, so I'm going to start off with books because this is very important, and I love this series sooooo much this time of year. I usually re-read it or listen to the audiobooks, it's called the Pine Deep Trilogy by Jonathan Maberry (Ghost Road Blues, Dead Man's Song, and Bad Moon Rising), and it's such a fall fic you can taste the colors. It's based in a town known for its Halloween celebrations (lots of cornfields, haunted mazes, lots of actual evil lurking) There are ghouls and zombies and vampires in this and it's so thrilling, the pages will fly by.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also these story collections by Joe Hill: Full Throttle and Strange Weather.
I do a rewatch of the show Tales from the Crypt every year, that is a staple. I'm also a sucker for anthologies like Body Bags, Creepshow, and The Monster Club. I watch a LOT of campy horror and campy slashers, most of which I'm sure you are familiar with. I was going to make a list of the b-movies and MST3K episodes I love, but I don't think that is what you are asking me for, and I don't want to get carried away and embarrass myself 💀 If you are interested in those things, pls leave another anon message and I will.
I will forever recommend the vampire series True Blood, it's iconic and I believe the first two seasons are free on Amazon Prime.
Favorite Twilight Zone episodes! I can tell I would love you in real life because you ask the best questions. Definitely "To Serve Man" that one still gives me shivers when I think about it today. "Nightmare at 20,000 feet" but I prefer the John Lithgow version in Twilight Zone: The Movie, because look at the original version, I actually feel sad for this baby:
Tumblr media
"A Most Unusual Camera" I think that is the name of it is another one. "Will the real martian please stand up" is so good. Oh god, and "The Lonely" is another one. I used to be on the road a lot, and if you ever are, I recommend The Twilight Zone collections on audible, they are acted out like old radio show dramas.
As far as fic rec from here, I've actually been thinking about searching around for ones that have a spooky/fall vibe and doing a post about it---hopefully soon.
You are a doll, and I am so happy you reached out xoxoxoxox

BLOGTOBER 10/10/2021: CREEPSHOW
Tumblr media
There is so much to say about this deceptively simple movie, I don't know if I can even cover it all—but hopefully I'll be able to point in the general direction of its broad borders. CREEPSHOW looks to be just a fun gimmick: an anthology movie by two life-long fans of EC Comics that emulates the format with a collection of five horror shorts and a wrap story featuring a Cryptkeeper-like ghoul. The production is vividly colorful and includes graphic, hand-drawn frames-within-frames that refer directly to the aesthetic of comic books like Tales from the Crypt. The tone of the stories is similarly faithful to the source; in each one, people corrupted by their peccadilloes meet with an ironic comeuppance at the hands of the natural or the supernatural, their lives ending with a disturbing yet funny punchline. CREEPSHOW is not the earliest screen adaptation of horror comics, and it hasn't been the last, but it may be the only iteration that imitates the EC brand, while also evoking the cultural atmosphere that surrounded those books when they were new and highly controversial.
Tumblr media
George Romero has made a lot of movies in different styles, from his quiet psychodramas with their touches of magic realism, to the grimy, gory apocalypse of his LIVING DEAD series, to…well, the feverish cartoon reality of CREEPSHOW. The chief connecting thread throughout Romero's filmography is the paranoia and alienation of his protagonists. This rings loudest among the survivors of the zombie plague, but it is equally present in the pseudo-vampiric melodrama of MARTIN, and the Stepford-like social satire of SEASON OF THE WITCH. It makes sense that a horror giant like Romero would have such a strong feeling for marginalization, when you consider that he grew up in an era where all of society's ills were being blamed on the horror movies and comics that he loved. However broadly, CREEPSHOW delivers a strong vision of childhood in a world where adults could not be trusted: They could be cruel, ignorant, selfish, and censuring, all the while hypocritically pawning off their culpability on the media that provided children with a welcome escape.
Tumblr media
The film begins with a turbulent domestic situation in which young monster kid Billy (Stephen King's son Joe Hill) is threatened and demeaned by his father (Tom Atkins), who focuses his wrath especially on Billy's beloved comic book collection. The scene is as exaggeratedly pulpy as anything in the movie, yet it hums with an emotional intensity that prevents the viewer from dismissing it as pure pastiche. The shorts the ensue are also full of characters who are threatened by those who are supposed to love them: Parents, children, and spouses are all equally threatening, creating an undercurrent of isolation and disappointment that flows beneath the outrageous, blackly comic horror that prevails. Stephen King's screenplay deftly balances humor and terror to keep things fun and exciting, but Romero's signature despair is branded on every segment.
Tumblr media
But about Stephen King, for a moment: The weakest piece of the film is "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill," in which King himself plays a gawping hillbilly who gets infected with a ravaging moss from outer space. I actually have a gripe about King that I don't hear from others as much as I think I should, which is that he presents himself as this man of the people, yet his stories are often populated by almost minstrel-like caricatures of poor, rural, working-class individuals—often surrounding a protagonist who has reached escape velocity from his rustic home town and is working on a respectable literary career. Not that I think it's unreasonable to treat people you love to a certain amount of ribbing, but I question whether King is really as sympathetic as he is accepted to be, and his extra yokelly performance may give you an idea of what I mean. Yeah, sure, this is supposed to be comic book-y, but in the context of many similar bits throughout King's career, it can start to feel pretty condescending.

The dip in quality of "Jordy Verrill" is extra stark when you look at the rest of the cast, which includes multiple Tony and Emmy winners giving first-class performances. Because Romero is so associated with the invention of the modern zombie, and also with Tom Savini's groundbreaking gore effects, sometimes people fail to mention that he was really an actor's director. Romero demonstrated a fine feeling for people right from the start, and even a live-action cartoon like CREEPSHOW displays his emotional sensitivity and his ability to get the best out of his cast. Although a certain cynicism plays out in all of Romero's films, his basic sympathy for humanity is what makes his work effectively tragic, rather than judgmental and nasty.
Tumblr media
CREEPSHOW may not warm your heart as it chills your bones, but it is likely to make you feel something deeper and more powerful than you might expect from a garden variety comic book adaptation, especially one so frankly schticky. And on my closing note, I'd like to say that CREEPSHOW is one of the only movies I've ever seen where the comic book format is evoked, and it doesn't look like complete shit. Almost every time I see a live-action movie using illustration elements for its transitions, they're lazy and awful and it's obvious that the filmmakers wanted to make the hipstery gesture of being comic book-like, without putting an ounce of effort into it or even just trying to make it look nice. The message always seems to be, "We know some people think comics are cool but we have no idea why; we think they're stupid, and we think you're stupid too, but we want your ass in a seat so here ya go, sucker." Mercifully, Romero DOES know what's good about comics, and he serves it up in spades. Just another piece of evidence of his sympathy and respect for humanity, the viewer included.

PS My husband and I re-watched this movie during a trip to Pittsburgh, and we both had super scary nightmares that night, so the mojo is still working. Happy 40th anniversary CREEPSHOW!

This new season of Creepshow isn't bad but like there's absolutely nothing with the Creep? No animatronic of him? Nobody in costume?
Just the intro and the comic?
Where's my laughing ghoul, Shudder!

Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward — Destroy All Monsters (Kill Rock Stars)
Tumblr media
youtube
Earlier this year, around Valentine’s Day, Jad Fair and Samuel Locke Ward released Happy Hearts, a collection of sugary, strange and (sometimes) quite romantic love songs. Destroy All Monsters — named after one of Fair’s favorite Detroit punk bands — is likewise seasonal: a punk rock Halloween party soundtrack populated by Dracula, Martians, zombies, devils and men of both invisible and shrinking varieties.
Monster movie imagery has always found its way into Fair’s songs, going back to his first band, Half Japanese, which frantically chewed up big hunks of mass culture (Springsteen, Dylan, Jodi Foster, Frankenstein), and spit them out as something much weirder.
The music Fair makes now is softer around the edges, and he writes about ghouls and goblins as if they’re old friends. Opening track “Dracula Has Risen” (Fair pronounces it the Munsters’/Rob Zombie way, “Drag-u-la”) warns that now is the time to run and hide, to stay inside, to avoid the horrors of the Prince of Darkness. But as Fair talk-sings over the pleasant swing of the guitar, the message seems to be that of wistful inevitability rather than frightening urgency. On the speedier “Invaders from Mars,” a cartoonish hovering noise evokes tinfoil flying saucers. Spookier tunes feel like Creepshow vignettes: “Pumpkin Head” and “The Necronomicon,” — the record’s hardest rocker — feel as though they’re sung with a flashlight under the chin.
Ward, himself a prolific singer/songwriter/multiinstrumentalist who has collaborated with Mike Watt and Joe Jack Talcum, among others, has a gift for oddly memorable pop melodies and unpredictable instrumentation. There are enough instances of playful scary soundtrack homage to make me think he was having a good time.
As Fair put it to Little Village  “I prefer to have the feel of a pop song, but with some twists and turns. Sam is great at that.” In its warmth and sincerity, Destroy All Monsters straddles a strange line: It impersonates flimsy holiday novelty but resonates on a deeper level. It’s not really Halloween music –  one might enjoy the doo wop-y “The Monster That Challenged the World”  just as well in May – but there’s definitely a kinship with  homemade costumes, carefully carved Jack-O-Lanterns, and unscary haunted houses that nonetheless elicit shrieks. It’s like a corn maze, with its twists and turns.

A Gobelin’s Delight: Another Worthy Onscreen Homage to Edgar Allan Poe
Tumblr media
At last, we have a new segmental horror series that holds a candle in the spirit of Tales From the Darkside, Creepshow, American Horror Story, Tales from the Crypt, Black Mirror, and Twilight Zone. The Alfred Hitchcock Hour would be proud of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
The complete series is available on Netflix.
