#Critter Sitters

Tumblr media
Probably the most 1980s thing you will see all day: a Critter Sitters Trapper Keeper.
Since Google seems to be slim on info about this for some reason: Critter Sitters was competition by Mead (the paper/stationery company) with the cutesie character fare by American Greetings and Hallmark (the Big Greeting Card Cartel) in the early 1980s. They had some popularity but not nearly that of, say, AG's Strawberry Shortcake or Hallmark's Rainbow Brite. Since Mead made the papergoods it was easy for them to put their characters out there.

The story of the musical bowls. Once upon a time, we had six outside cat bowls, one for each of our regulars. Then Susan arrived, and unlike other raccoons we had had, she just cleaned the bowls out, and left.
Soon, Susan had her own feeding spot on the patio, and all was still well with our masked cat food vacuum. But Midnight didn't like any of the boys coming to the back to eat, and the Bunny look Alike wanted to eat on the front porch.
We have gone from six bowls, to four bowls, to five bowls, to three bowls, to one bowl, and we are now back to three. Susan is carrying the bowls to who knows where...
I have found a bowl near the opening of the underside of our neighbors deck, in our back bushes, in front of the truck, under my car, near the old basketball hoop base...
I walked out the front door tonight with a second bowl, as I'd finally found some of the missing bowls, and I was going to add it to the one already out there. It was out there an hour before. It is gone. 🤦‍♀️
We are back to three bowls as far as I know, and I haven't seen the second red one in over a month. How many will be around in the morning? No one knows. 🥴

compress is a limited energy person, tries to keep things minimal in terms of energy use, also chronic pain and phantom pain haver !
flip tomura shigaraki !!! (personal fav hc) pre-plf shigaraki regressed involuntarily when he became stressed, upset or even when he had trauma memories come back up.
baby tomura, Itty bitty baby. I'm talking loss of speech and babbling, paci's that keep him from trying to push out a curse word or two. soft mittens or padded gloves that help with his scratching. padded tomura !
tomura's his main cg was kurogiri. the doctor knew about this and informed afo and kurogiri but did nothing past that. leaving poor shigaraki to deal with this unfamiliar heads pace by himself (for a little while, till kurogiri came in and helped)
kiddo dabi, def an older regressor, anywhere from 6 to like 12 eldest of the lil villains. spinner is next oldest, v critter hearted kid.
if tonura regressed a bit older that usual he loves playing with big bro dabi n spinner !!!

Masterpiece or Hot Mess?
Here Are 7 Bad Paintings by Famous Artists.
Even the most adept of painters can totally miff it.
Ah, the expressive brush strokes of Van Gogh, and oh, Chagall’s dreamy scenes! Celebrated artists throughout history have produced some of the world’s most ravishing works, executed with an unparalleled mastery of light and color, line and space. But let’s face it: they also turned out their share of duds. We’re not talking about paintings intended to capture the grotesquerie of human life, but artworks that evidence clumsy mark-making, questionable choices, or a rudimentary hand. Even the most adept of painters, it seems, have their off days.
Don’t believe? Here are seven artworks by famous artists that will make you question their credentials.
Henri Matisse Portrait of Sarah Stein (1916)
Tumblr media
Matisse’s portraits are recognized for their evocative planes that seem to bear out the sitters’ psychological states. But not so much in this work. Part of a double portrait of his patrons, Michael and Sarah Stein, Matisse here has rendered Mrs. Stein sans dimensions, her facial features overly simplified and her neck caught between what seem like giant scissor blades. His vibrant palette is also absent here, save for the light patches he slapped onto Stein’s face. Even the study Matisse did of Stein looks grades better than this completed portrait—just saying.
Edvard Munch Angry Dog (1938–43)
Tumblr media
In case you couldn’t tell, Munch did not like this dog. While the Norwegian artist was certainly an animal lover, this pooch, which belonged to his neighbor, was apparently an untamed beast that did not endear itself to Munch. “I have myself many times on dark nights been attacked by it,” he wrote, “even right outside my own house.” Such behavior only slightly excuses this hastily daubed piece of nightmare fuel, in which the titular dog seems not so much angry as ready to escort you to the underworld.
Marc Chagall Hommage à Apollinaire (study) (1911)
Tumblr media
Granted, Chagall’s work has tended toward the whimsical and symbolic, but this garish work, a study for his ode to poet Guillaume Apollinaire, is probably best left unseen. While the piece is meant to depict the conjoined bodies of Adam and Eve, it instead captures confused proportions and a gaudily muddled background. To be fair, it is a study, which did pave the way for a stunning avant-garde canvas, so we’ll go easy on this one.
Vincent van Gogh Young Man with Cornflower (1890)
Tumblr media
Sorry to break it to you, but Van Gogh produced a handful of real lemons in his day. Our vote, however, must go to his painting of a youth he encountered at Auvers-sur-Oise. Surely, the artist’s intention was to capture the subject’s sunbaked complexion and radiant smile—the “je ne sais quoi of the eternal,” as Van Gogh described it. But what he turned out was a green-eyed, spotty-cheeked, pointy-eared creature, his discolored lips clamping down on a cornflower stem. I don’t know what, indeed.
Georg von Rosen The Sphinx (1887)
Tumblr media
Though hardly the most well-known name on this list, Swedish painter Georg von Rosen was recognized toward the end of the 19th century for his finely detailed historical scenes, created in strict academic style. Which makes this 1887 artwork downright baffling. Von Rosen’s portrayal of the mythical critter has the body of a lion and the head of a human female, except the proportions are so out of whack that it distracts from the meticulously drawn work. Seriously, where’s her neck at, Georg?
Pablo Picasso Fillette à la corbeille fleurie (1905)
Tumblr media
Put aside, if you can, the grossly asymmetrical power dynamics of a grown man having a child pose in the nude for him, and still, this early Picasso canvas is, well, not his best. The face of the mononymous “Linda” is drawn with some evocative world-weariness, but she’s otherwise clumsily rendered (the work’s one-time owner Gertrude Stein bemoaned the girl was painted with “feet like a monkey”). Not that the circumstances and gaucheness of the painting hurt its market: this hot mess was snapped up for $115 million at Christie’s in 2018.
Rembrandt van Rijn Stone Operation (Allegory of Touch) (c. 1624–25)
Tumblr media
At 18, Rembrandt created a series of paintings, each an allegory of one of the five senses. Understandably for a young—but no less gifted—artist, these works don’t reach the level of realism and tenebrism that marked the Dutch master’s later works. Smell and Hearing are forgivable, but Touch, showing a man undergoing a quack operation, is downright cartoonish, from the doctor’s three-fingered hand to the onlooker’s pinhole eye. Surely, the scene is meant to be comical, but not this much of a joke.
By Artnet News.
Top Painting: Vincent van Gogh, Madame Roulin and Her Baby, (1888).

Hey, I have an OC question! ^^ What are your OC's (Or at least- Poppy, Shiny, Terry, Henry, Ben and Moony's) favourite animals?
Oh I like this question! I'm gonna go ahead and do all of my OC's for this one ^^ starting with the WFRR OC's since there are so many of them XD
Poppy: Well, we know she's fond of insects, though I don't think they are recognized as animals? So I'd say she also likes ducks. Especially the ducklings (I blame that one convo we had. You know which one XD). When she goes to the park, she always brings a bag of duck friendly food for the birds- and she almost always gets a flock surrounding her 😂
Shiny Weasel: Hm... I'm gonna say it's a cross between ferrets and cats. She doesn't own any pets, but she thinks some of the strays in her neighborhood have adopted her for free food, and Shiny has grown a soft spot for them XD she'd love to get a ferret someday ^^
Terry Ratt T: Snakes. Not really an explanation, he just thinks they're cute, funky guys, "They don't have arms and legs. They do everythin' with their body. Move, eat... They're pretty funny like that."
Henry Foxworth: Hm... I'm gonna say he likes chickens. Not even because it's a fox thing, he genuinely likes them. I think he might have wanted to start a farm at some point in his life before he took scamming as a career path.
Moony Wolf: Ok hear me out... It's bunnies. Even before he started dating Poppy, he's liked rabbits. At first, it was just a part of his predator mindset. Rabbits = food = happy. And when he started working on himself, he felt guilt and felt like he had to make it up to the little critters somehow (Poppy specifically, but A. He didn't know where she was at the time, and B. He figured non-sentient rabbits could be like a practice run, or stepping stones toward the right direction). So he tried to volunteer at animal shelters around Toontown, and ironically got along best with the rabbits (and the dogs course). One adoption and a relationship with his former co-star later, and it's cemented in Moony's mind that rabbits are the best animal (he named his pet Bunny Cake btw)
Ben Cottontail: Hm... Hard to say in all honesty... I think he might like fish? Like maybe as a kid, Ben had a pet goldfish or something, so he's more familiar with fish.
Ok, onto my other OC's XD
Betty Locera: Dogs. And canines in general. Betty would be the best dog mom. She's already a more outdoorsy gal anyway! (*cough* @marshmallow-biscuit-blog Betty would fricken love Boyyo. Joe can dump the dog on her if he needs a dog sitter. Or just a break)
Detective Sketch: Pigeons. Pigeons have been a constant presence in Sketch's life. Watching them land on their windowsill in the orphanage. Seeing them flying around the city. Pigeons kind of bring a sense of childhood nostalgia to Sketch ^^
Prism: She can't pick just one. There are so many amazing animals in the night dimension, and even more that she's read about in the waking world. How can she choose!? Though I do imagine she has made friends with an eatier, a nightopian creature I invented, named Mercedes (I should post about Eatiers now that I think about it 🤔)
Well, I think that about covers it. Thank you so much for sending this in! I loved it ^^

Beetlejuice the Cartoon Series - My Thoughts! (Seasons 1 and 2) ✨️
I decided to write my thoughts about the cartoon as notes in my drafts so I could continue adding on to it as I was watching the series. These are my thoughts for Seasons 1 and 2!
Since I have a lot that I want to say, I will be adding a "read-more" link so you can continue scrolling. Either way, thank you for reading this! ✨️
-
Tumblr media
I've seen both intros briefly before jumping into the series, and they are absolutely amazing! However, this part from the first intro to just has to be my favorite... 💚 🖤
I like to think that all versions of Beetlejuice are capable of adding whatever they'd like to their outfit in this manner! ✨️
-
"Well here I am at the Neitherworld Shocking Mall, with grossness wall to wall... but am I shopping for myself? No... I have to buy something for her [Lydia]." (Critter Sitters, Season 1)
Okay... I get the appeal of Toonjuice now.
I mean, I technically have for a little while (watching short YouTube compilations of the show has helped), but there's something about the way Stephen Ouimette plays Beetlejuice that really drives home to me how charming, albeit manipulative, Beetlejuice can be. The way he delivers this line in the show is a good example of that.
I'm also starting to understand how Toonjuice has influenced Musicaljuice's characterization. Both of them begin their respective shows in the same fashion - speaking to the audience. It's something that has honestly become a bit of a comfort for me. Like yeah, this is Beetlejuice.
-

I. Love. Lydia's. Outfits! 💖
I've loved toon Lydia's design since the moment I saw it, but seeing her other outfits truly cements how much I adore her design.
-
"Yeeuck! A cutesy woodland creature!" (Skeletons in the Closet, Season 1)
In some Broadway performances of the musical (based on multiple clips of bootlegs I have found), Alex Brightman, as Beetlejuice, will place a lot more emphasis on his disgust over Lydia's affection towards her mom:
"Why would anyone wanna spend more time with their mother?! YEEUCK!"
The cadence on how he says "yuck" feels reminiscent of Ouimette's version (specifically in the line I had highlighted earlier). I wouldn't be surprised if Alex was inspired by the cartoon for this line.
-
I've talked a bit about Ouimette's voice acting earlier, so I'd like to hand the spotlight over to Alyson Court for a moment-
I really like her take on Lydia! She's makes her feel a lot more lively and enthusiastic in this version! I personally love characterizing Lydia as a little more of an upbeat goth girl in the musical, thanks in part to the cartoon.
-
Before I even jumped into the cartoon series, I was already interested to see how they would depict Lydia's school life. While watching, I was coming up with ideas as to what I would like to see in a potential musical cartoon for Beetlejuice.
Personally, I love the idea of Lydia having best friends who may not understand her strangeness, but still appreciate her for who she is. It's a concept that I could personally connect with. I can also see Claire being in the cartoon reboot, but rewritten to be more inspired by Regina George from the Mean Girls musical instead.
-
I like the dynamic Beetlejuice and Lydia have in the cartoon! Beetlejuice is a chaotic entity, which will occasionally butt heads with Lydia's down-to-earth attitude. Sometimes it can be hard for her to trust Beetlejuice for help, because of the way he approaches things, but it's nice to see the moments where she can appreciate what he has done for her.
He may not be good person, but he will still do whatever it takes to see his best friend happy.
-
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm in love with Toonjuice's cowboy outfit... 💖
I'm a huge fan of big ascots, and the usage of plain white for the pants, gloves, and hat is a very nice touch! It helps to balance out the stripes on his shirt!
He's my inspiration for Musicaljuice's cowboy design! I just really like the silhouette that this outfit gives!
-
I forgot to mention this earlier, but I now understand Delia's reference to having a cat in the musical! His name is Percy in the cartoon, and I've seen some artists acknowledge him in fanart!
Personally, I believe he passed away long ago... hence why you don't see him in the musical. It was one of Delia's lowest moments in her life, but it was the one that finally pushed her to look at the bright side of things. She believes it's what Percy would've wanted.
I haven't had a chance to draw Delia yet, but if I do, I want her to have a locket with a bunch of crystals around it that holds Percy's picture. 💗 🐈‍⬛️
-
That concludes my thoughts for Seasons 1 and 2! ✨️
I initially planned to take notes for the entire series in this post, but truth be told... it's been taking me some time to go through the whole show, due to my job and whatnot. With Season 4 being the longest of the series, I will have to come back to this some other time.
That being said... I'm beginning to understand better why a plethora of fans for the musical, especially those who are also fans of the cartoon, express such a great interest in a cartoon reboot.
I joined the fandom with my main interest being the YouTube animatic side of musicals. I've always enjoyed hearing others discuss the process of animation, and I enjoy seeing how it influences character design. Watching this cartoon has made me realize how much of an impact it has made to how we perceive Beetlejuice as a character.
Toonjuice is not only the first instance of a demon-based Beetlejuice, he is also the first instance of a morally grey one. He helped to create the foundation for Musicaljuice, who I believe has shown massive potential for a cartoon series of his own.
The possibility of Beetlejuice the Musical getting its own cartoon series seems to be highly unlikely, but one can only dream...

So what makes movie beetlejuice as a character, better than toon beetlejuice you think?
Oh wow it has been a HOT MINUTE since I've had a Beetlejuice question here! I'm not even hyperfixated on it anymore!
I'd still go to the premiere of Beetlejuice 2 tho. NUDGE NUDGE WINK WINK LMAO
That said, Toon Beetlejuice was extreeeeeeemely "dumbed down" (as the phrase goes-- yes it's not a great phrase but I'm blanking on a better way to describe the phenomenon at the moment) after season one. I'd even argue after a few episodes in to season one, but it's been a long time since I've watched it. If you compare the very first episode, "Critter Sitters," to basically any last season episode, you'll notice that Beetlejuice goes from being conniving and sounding fairly close to Michael Keaton, to being SUPER SHRILL AND LOUD and he loses all sense of intellect. It's... a sad trend I see in cartoons a lot. Take Spongebob for example... later seasons make Patrick and Spongebob super shrill and unintelligent... and like... Yeah Patrick was never bright, right? But he's SO so much worse.
I think movie Beetlejuice/Betelgeuse has a lot more mystique about him because we only see him for 17 minutes. He's conniving and manipulative and we can kinda see his mind constantly at work under the surface. When he's let loose he has fun and puts on a show-- he's electric. He's pure energy. And this also gives him-- dare I say it-- a weird, villainous, disgusting level of sex appeal. That's absolutely something that drew me to the character when I was truly obsessed-- he's a charming asshole.
The cartoon has some great moments and fun adventures... I like that we see more of the Netherworld and its characters; but I just don't think Beetlejuice as a character has quite the same charming asshole-ness that the movie version has! He just doesn't pack the same punch for me.
But of course YMMV and toon version is loveable in his own way (and sensitive!) and it's nice to see writers play with that side because even I think it's somewhere in the movie version, just somewhere incredibly deep. [Or not. I wrote about that sometime long ago]. When I roleplayed movie version forever ago, it was nice to dig reeeeeeeeal deep to find that side of him, and he absolutely did not like (nor want) aaaaanyone seeing that part of him haha

So this is a side note kind of dog question. How do you find/determine if someone is a good dog sitter?
We recently moved to a new place and I am trying to find a sitter for my pup, but in the past I’ve always lived near friends who were able to help, instead of needing to find like a professional sitter. My vet recommended Rover.com but said some people on there aren’t great… and now I am like… but how do I tell? If you have any tips/thoughts/experiences I would be v grateful !
Oh, that is a good question! I am afraid that I've been relying on friends or coworkers for like eight years now, so I've never used Rover.com. (I have three cats, three dogs, and there's also the ball python--it's honestly just easier to ask a grad student to come by or a roommate or something.)
The easiest thing, back when my critters were a bit less ridiculous, was just to make friends with other people who have animals and take care of them in ways I like. I exchanged numbers with a gent I liked in Matilda's previous puppy classes, for example, and when we needed a temporary sitter for just Matilda for a couple days when I was traveling I asked a few students if anyone would like to take her. I always offer money for stuff like that; the benefit of asking friends is that I know my friends and I know how they handle animals, but I don't want to put them out either.
If you're traveling and you haven't had a chance to make friends and work is not a convenient source of people to ask, then things get trickier. When I was new in my last town, I boarded Tribble at the vet (or a boarding kennel) while I was out of town. That's what I grew up doing, and it's generally not the most interesting time for a dog but it's also usually pretty safe. A sitter is definitely more comfortable, though.
If choosing a sitter, I would look for someone with plenty of repeat business and good reviews. Rover is as good a place as any to look. Have a conversation with them ahead of time about what the parameters of looking after your animals are. Is it okay to take your dog for a walk? Using what kind of gear? Are there any foods the dog can or can't have? Where does the dog sleep? Just talk about these things explicitly, even if they seem obvious; there are lots of ways to look after animals, and you don't want to leave any room for miscommunication.

Last Line Game
Thanks for the tag @fonkeloog! For the last line I wrote I have...
Springing to action while cursing under his breath, Sirius resigned himself to his fate as niffler-sitter and tried to stop the creature from ravaging his desk.
"That's mine," he said, plucking a small box from the niffler's greedy paws and pocketing it for safekeeping. He ignored the look of indignation on the critter's face as he lifted him up in his arms. "Let's take you home, shall we?"
Sirius and a niffler! Where will that go..? No one knows, not even me. Ain’t that right, @mooncat457writing and @sliebman10? And an open tag for everyone who’d like to share their last snippet as well!

So, after watching the first episode, “Critter Sitters” last year, I began to wonder how human babies would survive when raised in the Neitherworld. I also wondered what Lydia’s early childhood was like since it was never presented in the actual show. This was when I came up with an AU story called “Babe In Arms”, which is focused on Beetlejuice and his two neighbors caring for Lydia as if she was their own. You see, I’ve always loved media where human children are raised by animals or supernatural entities, so I decided to have Lydia be the Neitherworld Mowgli. After all, she does seem to relate more to the ghouls and monsters of the Neitherworld than her fellow breathers.
I am extremely proud of my creation and want to share it all with you guys. In fact, it’s gonna be the first story of a trilogy series focused on Lydia’s childhood and how she met Beetlejuice. It sadly hadn’t blown up yet, but at least it exists.

Today was productive but my body aches. I am not the same person I was pre-pandemic and I don’t know why. (Well actually I do know but owwww).
Captured a lot of Inspo to fuel illustration for a nebulous project. This includes ideas I need to write down, so not just images.
Managed to keep all of me and my “everything above my ankles” gear clean (I’m one of those annoying idiots) while everything below my ankles was increasingly CAKED WITH MUD. (Fwiw, I need to stay clean(ish) when hauling camera gear and occasionally changing lenses so…).
New internal frame lightweight day pack is fantastic. Best purchase since I cannot remember when. Able to fish out camera lenses blind from a very secure side pocket while pack was still firmly on my back. Big win when in WET environments.
Only a few potentially artistic photos - nearly everything was reference shooting plus some sketched notes.
Covered somewhere between 10-12k on foot. Took my time for most of it. Lots of good macro shots for reference work — little critters and creepy crawlies.
For shits and giggles decided to trail run and do some cardio on hill climbs with pack on (and all equipment carefully stowed away in pack).
Met a nice horse who is VERY FRIENDLY.
Spent 20 minutes massaging my feet with a lacrosse ball once I got back to my home base for the (almost) week.
Helped chop some veg for tonight’s dinner (I’m not the one cooking - relief)
Feeling a little too tired to set up my painting gear so I’m just staring at the water in between a little scrolling.
I need more of these outings.
(Ah yes- cat sitter says my cat who needs daily pills put up zero fuss. Relief. Huge relief. Phewwwww)

The Compelling Reasons Why You Should Take Your Pet in Boating Trips
Tumblr media
Sailing with your furry friend can be a very rewarding and joyful experience. After all, your treasured pet feels more like a member of your family than a loyal and affectionate companion. You’ve probably asked yourself, “Should I bring my dog sailing? How could I ever just leave him behind?” or “My cat will be lonely if I leave her behind.”
Your pets are a part of your family, and if you’re frequently boating without them, you may be missing out. All sorts of animals have accompanied their human companions on all types of boats for hundreds of years. So, it’s no surprise that many boating enthusiasts bring their beloved critters into their boating adventures, whether sailing or fishing.
After all, having them around poses a lot of benefits and outweighs the cons of having them onboard. Plus, they could also benefit from the activity as well.
Bringing dogs on a boat is usually easy, and cats (surprisingly) will also enjoy the experience. Cats are more easily adaptable to new environments than you might expect them to be and may find boating adventures an enjoyable experience. Plus, your feline friends can also protect you and your boat from smaller invaders like mice and other unwanted pests.
If you have birds, reptiles or other small pets, it may be possible to bring them boating as well, just be sure you can provide a safe, comfortable environment for them. If it’s not possible to provide this safe space, or if you have certain exotic species of pets, it may be best to leave them at home.
If you need some more convincing about bringing and letting your pet into your Quintrex boat the next time you go boating, we’re here to list out all the benefits and advantages of bringing your pet with you.
Zestful Outdoor Play
When you bring your pets on boating adventures, you may find you have even more fun playing with them in and around the water. Dogs often enjoy swimming and running around beaches when the boat is docked. Dogs are wired to be playful and they love to do all sorts of activities involving physical exertion. Bring along a frisbee, or a tennis ball, or just find some sticks to play fetch with. If you want to play with your dog while swimming or wading, you can use specialized toys and dog boat accessories designed for water play, including floating fetch toys and water loungers designed just for your canine friends. Cats can also enjoy lounging around the beach and would even venture into the water if there are many minuscule fish swimming near the shore.
A New and Curious Environment
Both dogs and cats, as well as some other types of pets, enjoy feeling the breeze and fresh air and love basking in the warm sunshine. You’ll be enriching your pet’s life with outdoor exposure and a sense of adventure. Unless your pets are skittish and have high anxiety, your pets may also greatly enjoy the sights and sounds of interesting wildlife or meet the pets of other boaters in the area. This is especially stimulating for dogs as they are very social and sometimes vocal with other dogs.  If your pet is a more cautious creature, this is a great opportunity to expose them to a new environment. Be gentle with them as they investigate and explore their new surroundings warily until they get comfortable and more confident. However, don’t force your pet if they won’t budge or they hide away in fear. Maybe reconsider bringing them along next time and work on how you can make your pet less anxious.
Spend More Quality Time
Most pets thrive on attention and human interaction, especially with their family. Taking your dog boating with you means you won’t have to leave them alone all day. You won’t have to worry about the dog not being let out while you’re gone, or the cat feeling lonely being left alone in the house all day or having to pay for expensive dog walkers or pet sitters to take care of your pets for you.
Forge Connections With Others
Beyond just pure fun, another benefit of boating with pets is that they can be a great conversation starter with other boaters and travellers. Having an animal with you is a fantastic icebreaker and an easy way to make new friends with like-minded folks. If you use your boat to travel far from home, just be sure to check for any local regulations on companion animals and any cultural differences that may make travelling with animals in these areas complicated.
Provide Security
Pets that serve as guard dogs at home can also protect your boat, belongings and family out on the water. These protective pets can help keep intruders and thieves away from approaching your boat. Cats, as mentioned before, will catch pests that could damage your boat’s interior and bring diseases to you and the other boaters. Generally, animals usually have a sixth sense of other dangers you may encounter while travelling. Your pet could become a valuable member of your boating crew.
