TV OF 2021 PART 2

Documentary-wise, BBC showed some great music docs such as Reclaiming Amy, When Nirvana Came To Britain, Other, Like Me (about Throbbing Gristle and Coum Transmissions), Nick Cave’s Idiot Prayer, Paloma Faith: As I Am, Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane McGowan and Billie: In Search of Billie Holiday. Other channels showed Spice Girls: How Girl Power Changed Britain, Queens of Rap, My personal favourite was Sky’s Look Away which told the stories of several women who’d been abused by various music industry people + had a bit about the groupies of early 70s Los Angeles like Sabel Starr + Lori Mattix. Another one I really loved was Sky’s Blitzed: The 80s Blitz Kids Story.

There were also programmes by Kathy Burke discussing money, Chris Packham did a really good one on his favourite walk that talked about depression + so much more + Johnny Vegas did one on his attempt to set up a ‘glamping’ site.

Even tho’ I hate football I thought they did a good job with Fever Pitch: The Rise of the Premier League. BBC also showed one on Jackie Collins and the one on corrupt police to go alongside the new series of Line of Duty. There was also Blair & Brown: The New Labour Revolution (which I thought was very good), Makeup: A Glamorous History (would love to see them do another series), and Black Power: A British Story of Resistance. Other channels showed Empire State of Mind (about the British Empire) and Royal Bastards: Rise of the Tudors. But I think my favourite was probably BBC’s Dark Matter: A History of the Afrofuture

Mark Kermode returned with another series of his Secrets of Cinema and there was also another series of Between the Covers (the book review show). Also loved the new series, This Is My House (where you have to guess who the real homeowner is), and Sort My Life Out (which is basically decluttering on an epic scale).
