The more I volunteer at a low kill shelter the less I think it’s humane. I’m sorry but how is it better that this puppy has grown up here? This dog is now over a year and has been there since it was 5months. This place is as humane as a shelter can be. Kennels aren’t small and volunteers come and give them short walks though they don’t get out every day all the time. I’m sorry but this dog can’t have a good life stuck in a kennel and the older dogs have it harder to get adopted. It’s just sad.

Spirit of the Wolf
Horrific story of wolf abuse coming out of Wyoming generating national and worldwide outrage. Finally perhaps the Spirit of the Wolf will finally be respected. Wolf Abuse in Wyoming Here’s a link to the story in the New York Post. There’s plenty written about the actual story all over local news and social media already, so I don’t need to retell the story in detail. The main point is that a…

“Couldn’t Remember Turning on the Gas,” Toronto Star. December 13, 1932. Page 2. ---- Man Who Alarmed Landlord Sent to Psychiatric Hospital ---- One of the briefest early men’s courts in months was held to-day. Magistrate Arthur Tinker was faced by only two prisoners. One, a drunk, had been in custody for several days to sober up.
‘I feel fine this morning,’ he remarked. He was warned, remanded for sentence, and allowed to go.
The second prisoner was Camille Ploudre, alleged to have attempted self-destruction.
‘How do you plead?’ asked the bench. ‘I don’t remember. I was drunk,’ replied accused.
‘I got a call from his landlord,’ said Detective Atkinson, ‘to come over at once. Accused had turned on the gas in the room.’
‘How long were you drinking?’ the bench asked accused. ‘Three days.’
Accused was remanded until December 20 to the psychiatric hospital.
Placed on ProbationCharged with theft, William Spencer was remanded for sentence and put on probation for a year.
‘I haven’t made up my mind about you,’ said Magistrate Jones to Louis Ross, found guilty yesterday of receiving cloth stolen from a farm by Walter Strang.
Strang and Leo Dressler, also a receiver, were remanded for sentence, put on probation for a year and ordered to make restitution of $50.
Ross was remanded until tomorrow for sentence.
‘He’s been in jail ten days,’ said counsel for Harry Stannmore, charged with attempting to obtain $7 from a store by hand. ‘He’s got a wife.’
“Yes, and he’s got a record,’ said Crown Attorney Gibson.
‘I’ll give him 14 days and date it back,’ declared Magistrate Jones.
Seal Fate of HorseLeo Kechepsky, charged with cruelty to animals, seemed very loathe to part with the steed which he had allegedly ill-treated. Finally he was prevailed upon to do so.
‘The Humane Society will see that it is destroyed,’ said Mr. Gibson. ‘Other people have been ordered to sell old horses and have simply bought an older one for $1 and sold it to the glue factory for $2, thereby making $1.’
The case be adjourned until the horse was disposed of.
Brothers Quarrel‘He was sitting on a chair and blocking the way to the cellar and I moved him and the chair,’ said Jack Izenberg, charged with aggravated assault upon his brother Max. ‘Then the fight began,’ Izzy, also a brother, charged Jack with assault, too.
‘On Dec. 6 he pulled an iron out of his pocket and struck me,’ declared Izzy. ‘I’ve been laid up for a week.’
‘We were good friends,’ said Jack. ‘Then I got married and all the trouble began.’
‘Jack wanted to get some of his papers form my drawer and I wouldn’t let him,’ said Izzy. ‘Then he pulled out the iron and hit me on the head.’
‘Just a family brawl,’ commented Magistrate Jones. ‘I’ll mark it withdrawn if accused pays each of his brothers, $10. Otherwise the fine will go to the city.’
‘If you don’t send your horse to the country we’ll send you to jail,’ Crown Attorney Malone told Harvey Muntz, charged with cruelty to animals. Accused acquiesced, with the crown’s wish and left the court.

Okay, I know people as a general rule tend to not care about invertebrates as much as cute, fuzzy mammals, but this is a must-read if you care about animal welfare. The short version is that horseshoe crab blood has been used for decades in medicine as a way to test whether something is truly sterile; the blood clots in the presence of bacteria. Since then millions of horseshoe crabs have been captured and drained of blood, even though a synthetic alternative was developed a few years ago.
They go through a pretty brutal experience in the process. They're caught by fishermen who often throw them by their tails into a pile in the open air, and they're then trucked to a bleeding facility where they're strapped down and their blood is removed with needles jabbed directly into their hearts. Over half their blood may be taken, after which they're supposed to be returned to the ocean. However, it's likely many of them never make it back, instead turned into fish bait and sold by the same fishermen who caught them in the first place.
Apart from the fact that this is a horrific thing to put any animal through, the attrition due to fatalities has put a serious dent in horseshoe crab numbers. This is compounded by massive habitat loss, pollution, and the capture of horseshoe crabs as food, particularly as the females of one species are considered a delicacy. And other animals that rely on horseshoe crabs are suffering, too. The American rufa subspecies of the red knot, a medium-sized shorebird, is critically endangered as the horseshoe crab eggs it must have in order to successfully complete migration have become increasingly scarce, and it is likely the bird will become extinct if trends continue.
While there are guidelines for medical horseshoe crab harvest, they're considered optional. The few laws that exist are poorly enforced. Short of a complete ban on horseshoe crab blood in favor of the synthetic alternative, these animals are in very real danger of going extinct after a history spanning over 400 million years on this planet.
Thankfully, this article is not the first to bring forth the issues surrounding horseshoe crab harvest. Here are a few resources for further information and action (US based, though horseshoe crabs are threatened throughout their entire range):
