Long queues have formed outside the first branch of new McDonald’s concept brand CosMc’s – but will the new retro-themed, drinks-focused brand have staying power?
Fast-food companies are dreaming of more customers like 21-year-old Corinn McKenna.
“I’m here because of the intrigue, and I think the McDonald’s empire is something that’s pretty impressive,” she said. “I first heard about this launch on TikTok.”
Ms McKenna, who ordered a tart, mildly sweet blackberry mint green tea, was among the initial rush of customers at the first CosMc’s, a new brand launched by the burger giant with the hopes of cracking the market for specialty coffees and drinks.
CosMc’s yellow-and-purple design is meant to evoke nostalgia for the brand’s past and is named after a strange and obscure company mascot – a cheeseburger-obsessed orange alien with six arms that featured in McDonald’s advertising starting in the 1980s.
The menu is slightly more up to date. It includes breakfast sandwiches with slight uplifts – one comes with avocado and tomatillo along with egg and sausage – desserts such as filled donut-like pastries called McPops, and snacks including pretzel bites.

The real focus, however, is a long list of drinks that involve various permutations of caffeine, sugar and colours designed to pop on Instagram. They have names like Churro Frappe, S’Mores Cold Brew, Tumeric Spiced Latte and Tropical Spiceaide – a sweet lemonade with a slight kick and red fruits bobbing along the top.
The drinks can be customised with various syrups, flavours, vitamin shots and boba – those chewy, trendy tapioca pearls.
CosMc’s is drive-though only, and on Friday – the second day of a rather well-publicised “soft” launch – it was not exactly serving fast food. Customers waited in their cars for an hour or more in an orderly queue that snaked through a shopping centre along a busy road in suburban Chicago.
The new brand is an effort by the chain to boost its beverage business and take on the likes of Starbucks. Experts say that drinks have been something of an afterthought, at least in the US market, for the world’s largest fast-food company.
“McDonald’s has done a terrible job with coffee overall, despite selling a lot of it,” said Jeffrey Young, founder of Allegra World Coffee Portal, a research firm and consultancy. “I don’t think it’s ever really committed to it.”
Dorothy Calba, senior research analyst at Euromonitor International, noted that its McCafe brand, “never really took off” in the US despite selling eight million cups a day worldwide.
McDonald’s also had to reckon with its own reputation.
“Their brand recognition tied to burgers and fries was almost too strong in the US for consumers to overcome that identity,” she said.
Waiting in the long queue on Friday were Crystal Rodriguez and her friend Maria Hinojosa. They had written down a long list of items they wanted to try: the breakfast sandwiches, a pear-flavoured slushy drink, some of those McPops and more.
“I’m a fan of McDonald’s and the whole retro space theme is cool,” Ms Rodriguez said. “I like the 1980s, too.”
The pair first heard about the new restaurant from a co-worker of Ms Hinojosa, and had already driven about an hour from their Chicago neighbourhood to get a first taste – before enduring a long wait.
Asked if they were old enough to remember the 1980s, Ms Hinojosa clarified: “We’re really children of 90s. But we’ve seen a lot of stuff about CosMc, it’s all online.”
The retro branding also helped lure in Steve Raquel, a 54-year-old who formerly worked for McDonald’s marketing department.
“There’s some interesting things going on here,” he said, though he admitted he had no idea what he would order when he eventually made it to the front of the queue.
Five cars ahead – and just about at the head of the line – Ashley Pete from nearby Joliet said she encountered the brand while searching online for somewhere nearby serving smoothies or some sort of refreshing fruit drink.
“I hope this is good, because I’ve been in the line for about an hour,” she said, picking up her phone to look at the CosMc menu. “I guess I should be making up my mind on what I’m going to order while we talk.”
The chain plans to open up more outlets in Texas next year, but the company’s boss has tried to temper expectations.
“We’re talking about 10 stores, OK?” McDonald’s chief executive Chris Kempczinski said during a briefing earlier this week. “Let’s not get too excited.”
Some of the marketing experts the BBC spoke to questioned the logic of inventing a whole new brand in order to sell coffee beverages and other sweet customised drinks.
But for the company’s bottom line the appeal of this particular market is clear.
“The profit margins are much higher,” said Ms Calba, the research analyst.
The spicy lemonade and blackberry tea drinks cost $4.89 (£3.90), plus sales tax, while a Churro Frappe is on the menu for $5.79 (£4.61).
A new brand with standalone locations – and no eat-in or counter service – is one way of separating out the tricky work of customising individual drinks.
“Everything in fast food, especially with drive-through, is turnaround time,” Ms Calba said. “There just wouldn’t be the capacity in a lot of those [existing McDonald’s] restaurants to still serve people” at the rate the business model demands.
“It just makes it easier on them,” she said.
Whether or not the brand has any staying power, it’s clear the first few days have been wildly popular among the chain’s dedicated fans.
One couple put off by the long queue in Bolingbrook started to pull away before the driver leaned out the window and hollered to a traffic-directing McDonald’s employee.
“What time are you open tomorrow?” she asked.
“Six am,” came the reply. “But it gets busy pretty early.”
“In that case,” the driver said, “do you think it’s worth getting here maybe an hour early?”

Mel, a successful graphic designer in Chicago, hears from her deceased mother's attorney exactly one year after her passing - only to find out she's inherited the movie theater her mom owned in her hometown. Reluctantly returning to Bellthorne, she hopes to sell the Jewel Theater and get back to Chicago no worse for wear. Unfortunately, she'll have to partner up with her ex-boyfriend, Shawn, to make it happen. His frustratingly cool behavior toward her couldn't possibly make for a hotter trip.
About the Author
Georgia is a life-long story and poetry writer who took 29 years to figure out she could do this whole novel-writing thing for real. She believes in pulling from real life as a jumping off point for her stories, which is why the towns and cities in her books will feel so familiar to her readers. When she’s not dreaming up the rich and idyllic lives of her characters, she can found nursing a craft beer, snuggling her two pets, dancing her butt off, singing/rapping along to the hits of the 2000s, and living out her RomCom fantasies with her dreamboat partner.

Still a nice video with great closeups of the last Broadway cast.

Valentine’s Day with Sarah Paulson’s Characters
MASTERLIST
Billie Dean Howard
She has just returned from intense filming for over a month, so the idea of going out and possibly seeing fans is not something she wants to do. And you prefer staying home as well. So rather than going out somewhere, you both decide to stay in and spend the evening at home together.
You try to cook a meal of lasagna for her, however you’re not a very good cook. After watching the pot of pasta boil over and seeing the poorly cooked meat she swoops in to save the meal.
Honey, why do I smell something burning? Here, let me help.
You then cook together, listening to her instructions and guidance. You eat the surprisingly delicious lasagna with dim lighting and candles. After eating you give her a present you have been dying to give her since you bought it a month ago. It’s a small necklace with a small Black Tourmaline crystal as the pendant.
I don’t know much about crystals, but the owner of the shop told me this is a crystal used for protection from negative energy and I figured with all that you experience it couldn’t hurt...
It’s perfect. I love it, baby.
She then tells you to close your eyes and hold her arm. She guides you to the guest room and opens the door. You open your eyes and see a cream-colored cat with green eyes. It was one you had seen when volunteering at the local animal shelter, but you didn’t want to bring it home without her permission.
Does this mean...Is she ours?
She sure is, baby.
You let the cat sniff you before petting her and she is very sociable. After awhile you decide to leave her alone and head to your bedroom. You shut the door so the cat doesn’t interrupt and end up a sweaty, breathless tangle. Before going to sleep you open the door so the cat can come in and lay in each other’s arms.

Even though people are getting to be more accepting, there is still a lot of judgement concerning two women being together so you both choose to stay in.
Instead of a fancy dinner, you end up reheating some leftovers from yesterday. Then you eat, listening to some music on the radio. But you can’t help but feel bad about not treating your girl right.
Some Valentine’s Day.
Oh Darling, it’s a social construct anyways.
After eating, she holds out her hand and pulls you closer as a slow song plays on the radio. You melt against her touch and rest your head on her shoulder while she guides your slow movement. At the end of the song, you look up at her and she leans her forehead on yours.

She takes her hands and moves them to cup your face, her thumbs gently stroking your cheekbones. You both study each other for a moment before she moves closer and kisses you. You both stand there, the music forgotten, and keep kissing until you have to catch your breath.
How’s this for Valentine’s Day?
It’s perfect.
You kiss again before heading to your bedroom hand-in-hand. You shut the door, forgetting about the dishes and music. Then you both help each other remove the other person’s clothes, moving slowly and deliberately. After making love, you both turn to face each other with tired grins.

Even though it’s Valentine’s Day, she still has plenty of tasks as the Supreme. So you decided to make dinner reservations for the night so she doesn’t have to worry about it. Then you just tell her what time to be ready by.
Even though you are not really into wearing dresses, you put one on that she really likes and has complimented before. Then you fix your hair, but leave it down since she likes that as well.
Oh, sweetheart, that dress looks beautiful on you and your hair looks so nice. Are you sure you want to wear a dress? You don’t have to.
I’m happy to. You look beautiful yourself, Delia.
She says goodbye to the girls and you head out to one of the nicest restaurants in New Orleans. You knew that she liked this place but didn’t go often because it was so fancy and expensive.
I’ve got to admit, I’m impressed with all of this.
Oh good. I have been planning this whole thing for a month. I honestly don’t know how you handle all of the responsibilities as the Supreme. I was stressed over a dinner reservation. But I am so glad see you enjoying this without having to be in charge of something. You deserve some pampering.

After dinner it’s not late, but you both decide to head back to the house. When you get back to the house, after making sure that the girls were doing alright she tells them goodnight and takes your hand leading you to her bedroom. Once there she draws a steaming hot bath and puts a blend of herbs and Epsom salts in it.
Come here, sweet girl. While I love that dress on you, I would love to see you without the dress and in here with me.

Bette and Dot Tattler
Because of the small town of Jupiter, you are limited to spending the day at the circus or somewhere secluded. So you invite them to a picnic for lunch.
You gather some food for lunch and a spare blanket from your storage. Then you meet them at the edge of the circus and only walk a short distance to a large shade tree. You’re delighted when Dot lets you hold her hand and you see a smile on her own face.
The lunch is simple, but you stay out there enjoying the break from the circus buzz. They let you lay down and rest your head in their lap while they play with your hair.
You know you’re both so special to me, right?
B: Of course. Even Dot talks about you sometimes before we go to bed.
D: Bette!
Unfortunately you have to head back for the show tonight since Elsa has a show every night. So you walk back and sit in their tent as they get ready. They even let you brush their hair.

The girls performance is dynamic and gets a standing ovation as you operate the spotlights from the back. Then, for the first time, they invite you to spend the night in their tent. As you all sit on the bed, Bette shyly asks if you would like to kiss her and you agree. Eventually, after Bette is asleep and you lay next to Dot, you ask to kiss her. She agrees and gives you a deeper kiss then Bette.
I love you Dot. I love you both.
I--I love you too. I never thought I would feel what that’s like.
I never thought I would have this feeling either until I saw you two come here with Elsa. I knew then that you two were special to me.

When solar panels get damaged, a commonly used material in solar panels seems to repair itself and experts think that this capability might become crucial in the coming times for solar energy.
This material is known as antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) i.e. solar absorber, which could be used to transform sunlight into electrical energy. The result from the University of York, UK provides for the possibility that it might be possible to develop long-standing solar panels. As stated by the research team, solar panels can not only heal themselves when broken or damaged but also decrease the prices and enhance extensibility.
University of Toledo, US scientists have built a 6.43%-efficient photovoltaic cell derived from antimony selenide which is as mentioned earlier is a solar absorber that has nearly a bandgap of ~1.2 eV and great microelectronic properties.
The aforementioned solar cell which is described above as reasonable and environment friendly is constructed by placing the antimony selenide films on soda-lime glass underlayers covered with Mo i.e. Molybdenum with the help of CSS (Closed Space Sublimation). It’s a physical vapor deposition process mainly used in the manufacturing of thin films and CdTe panels (Cadmium Telluride panels).
A source plate is used to deposit a bulk antimony selenide layer. These layers are then selenized at 350 to 4500 C temperatures in argon at a ground pressure of 10 Torr with selenium 100mg for 30 mins to boost recrystallization of antimony selenide.
Once this step gets finished, then a 55 nano-meter thick CdS (cadmium sulfide) buffer layer is deposited on the absorber with the help of chemical bath deposition. I'm expanding on my dolls and gushing about them get ready yall
Ok so my truly me forty (Amelia) and truly me 67 (Crystal) are girlfriends and Amelia is autistic and Crystal isn't but shes so supportive. I imagine quite often Amelia is info dumping about plants or landscapes and Crystal just had the dopey smile thats like "I don't know whats going on but shes happy and I love her so I'm happy" and they both have a great time. They always hold hands and I have two images in my head of them drawn more realistically one where there sitting on the curb and taking and another where there at prom. I love them so much I also love that both of their stories are interesting outside of their relationship. Like Crystal is a country pop (like Taylor swift) musician who's career is starting to take off. Amelia has lots of hobbies and is probably In a few clubs for hiking and gardening.
Like I said before I definitely think McKenna is nearodivergent and I love to think about how much more energetic Mckenna would be when she gets diagnosed with autism and adhd. Like just absolutely going crazy to stim. Doing back flips and spinning in circles until shes dizzy. Plus she could get accodatioms, like audio books, which would hopefully help her grades too so she could keep up on her special interest.
I always picture my truly me 19 (Romea) in tall grass surrounded by trees and a white rabbit near by. Something about the doll is so whimsical to me. The electric green eyes are so beautiful and interesting!
