Plant of the Day
Tuesday 31 October 2023
The large compost heaps at Great Dixter, East Sussex, UK, formed an excellent growing area for pumpkins (Cucurbita pepo) and gourds. These tender annual plants thrive on the humus rich heaps being warmed by the heat of the decomposition.

Squashlets have been born! The ones in the 6-cell are romanesco Zucchini and the other one is a fig leafed gourd (Cucurbita ficifolia)
I also got a ripe sungold tomato! Def a sign that I started things waaaay too early for the PNW but I am impulsive when it comes to sowing things and my ADHD likes the instant gratification. The tomatoes are super rootbound and have to be watered twice a day or they wilt. It’s almost time for warm weather though!! Just one more month!!
Also I think I figured out that it was overwatering that hurt my peppers. I’m very bad at estimating watering since the surfaces dry out so easily so I drowned them and my tomatillos on accident. 😔

Poured out an old bag of seed mix with climbing annuals when my hornbeam hedge died. Look at 'em!

Can unexpected changes happen in the process of plant domestication?
Today, to feed ourselves, we just need to go to the nearest supermarket and select the fruits and vegetables of our choice. But have you ever imagined how hard the food search was for our ancestors? Well, this process, which for us is practically unconscious, was costly for a long time for them, who not only needed to actively hunt and search for plants but also identify what was actually…

During the transition period, the tip exports sugar, while the base imports it from the other source leaves (Figure 11.19).

Later, less invasive techniques often showed the sieve plate pores of sieve tube elements to be open channels that allow unfettered transport between cells (see Figure 11.5A-C).

Plant of the Day
Tuesday 27 June 2023
The horticultural enterprise Transition Turriefield has been experimenting with growing edibles in Shetland’s wild and windy climate since 2008. They have lots of experience about creating growing conditions that allow the sustainable, organic production of vegetables and fruit in challenging conditions. In the tunnels the Cucurbita pepo (courgette) cultivars were cropping well. Thanks to Penny and Alan for a fascinating visit.

It was recommended for me to trim my squashes, so I harvested some squash greens!
Also I am open to any recipe ideas for these! I’ve been eating the same braised greens recipe (braising with vinegar, cumin, salt/MSG, and garlic) for the last two weeks and could use more variety 😛 But at least I learned I can braise in cast iron without a huge mess!
This zucchini plant I donated to the giving garden is doing well for itself! Though they haven't been on top of harvesting them so they're getting huge. :P Zucchini grow to the size of other gourds, but we just harvest the fruit immature since that's when they're tastiest.
This cultivar (Costata romanesco) is also very cool looking! I tried one of my own fruit raw to taste test and they're very slightly sweet. A little like a cucumber but with the zucchini texture.
I also finally got some tomatillos! I've attempted them for the past few years but either killed them all or never got any fruit until it was too late. I managed to get some sturdy plants that I've been braiding together to try get better pollination, since unlike a lot of our common nightshade fruits, they don't self pollinate very well.
