Got to hold a couple friends today. Some sort of snouty weevil and a green little member of the katydid family? I'm a great lover of bugs but not a great identifier.

Can i request a spencer reid x reader oneshot??? Where reader loves silly crack memes and sends him them throughout the day and sends him a meme of two weevils kissing and says "this is us" and its really silly and cute
sorry this took so long love!! thank you for your request! i hope you enjoy <3 w; short & sweet!
“what are those?” derek asks out loud. his eyes had darted towards spencer’s computer, an email from you being pulled up with some strange… insect. he had stopped and narrowed his eyes for a long time trying to figure out what exactly they were.
spencer flinches slightly and he looks over his shoulder, shaking his head. “a weevil meme.”
“weevil?”
“yes. they’re beetles, actually. they belong to the superfamily curculionoidea. they’re known for their long snouts.”
derek’s brows lift slightly, nodding. “mhm,” he wasn’t really interested but he learned to let it go in one ear and out the other. “this is us? okay, lover boy.” derek chuckles.
spencer’s cheeks start to burn with the teasing but shakes his head and dismissively waves his hand in the air. “she likes to send me meme’s she’s made for me. you wouldn’t get it.”
derek smirks when he sees the smile on spencer’s face that grows, shaking his head. “i guess i wouldn’t.” his hand pats spencer’s shoulder, before walking away.
spencer’s eyes glance around cautiously before he opens up his own collection of meme’s before sending the perfect one with a smile on his face.
SUBJECT -> funny meme. here’s one of my own.

BUG OF THE DAY
BotD 11 - 04/01/24 This is the Alfalfa Weevil
Tumblr media
These long-nosed insects are quite a sight to behold! Alfalfa weevils belong to the family Curculionoidea, which is a very fancy way of saying Weevil- as one might have guessed. These unique insects can be found throughout Europe, and mainly pop up during late spring. As their name might suggest, these beetles like to chow down on alfalfa sprouts, and are considered heavily destructive pests. Nevertheless, these charming beetles have become quite popular due to their unique looks and- most notably- their very long "nose". They are certainly very incredible!

they call me weevil cause im a wizard and im beetles belonging to the superfamily Curculionoidea, known for their elongated snouts. They are usually small, less than 6 mm (1⁄4 in) in length, and herbivorous. Their rostrum, or elongated snout, hosts chewing mouthparts instead of the piercing mouthparts that proboscis-possessing insects are known for. The mouthparts are often used to excavate tunnels into grains.

Vifill
Tumblr media
“Weevil Man” © Jason Lenox
[From the Fighting Fantasy book Phantoms of Fear. I changed the name for petty taxonomic reasons. The term “weevil” in English typically refers only to beetles in the Curculionoidea, which usually (but not always!) have long snouts. This is in contrast to most other languages with Germanic roots, in which the various versions of the word refer to all beetles. So I changed it to one of these other languages--”vifill” is the Old Norse version.]
Vifill CR 4 CN Monstrous Humanoid This stooped creature resembles a cross between a beetle and a man, with a human-like face, craggy and worn. Its hair is shaggy and grows behind two pairs of antennae. It has two arms and two legs, each ending in a pincer-like claw. A large carapace grows on its back in the shape of a dome—short spurs and spikes protrude from it.
The vifills, or beetle men, are cantankerous hermits with insect features. Their carapace is formed from wing covers fused together—vifills cannot fly, and are somewhat sour about it. This does provide them with exceptional protection, however. They are omnivores that can consume just about anything organic—a vifill will happily eat hair, leather and sinew. Vifills do not hunt humanoids intentionally for food, but are very territorial and tend to throw axes first, ask questions later.
The axe is a nearly sacred object to vifills, able to be tool and weapon both. Most vifills are skilled carpenters and trappers, living in caves or hollows secured by wooden beams and protected by wooden traps. Springing branch spear traps, pitfalls and deadfalls are favorite choices. They typically live alone, but form temporary families in order to care for children. Once the children are grown, young and parents alike go their separate ways and rarely if ever see each other again. Vifills are superstitious when it comes to magic, and an ostentatious display of spellcasting is a sure fire way to intimidate them.
A vifill stands about five feet tall with its permanently stooped posture. Their maximum lifespan is similar to that of a human, but their rough and tumble lifestyle means that few survive to be elderly.

What Is Your Favorite Blug
god there's too many bugs to just pick A Favorite!!! so here's a list of some that come to mind as particularly good bugs (under a readmore because i'm very very autistic) i'll stick to true insects here because if i included spiders and myriapods i'd be here all night
lepidopterans were what made me start loving bugs as a kid and they're still very dear to me now. my favorite when i was little was the blue morpho (morpho menelaus, i have a preserved one and these guys are SO shiny no photo can truly do them justice) but my current #1 lepidopteran would have to be the cecropia moth (hyalophora cecropia, largest moth in north america! also just look at that widdle face)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it's impossible to go wrong with the humble beetle but some that stick out to me are stag beetles (family lucanidae, super hard to id to species) and weevils (superfamily curculionoidea, the ones here are the giraffe and acorn weevils)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
cicadas and roaches both get flack for being just noisy or just pests but they are still both important to their environments and can be very pretty as well. this guy (huechys sanguinea) is probably my favorite cicada as it's very much a bug after my own heart and the emerald cockroach (corydidarum magnifica) is probably one of your best contenders if you want to prove to someone that roaches can be pretty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
honorable mentions to the giant wētā (genus deinacrida) for being So God Damn Big and praying mantises in general because i think they are very cool but am not well versed enough with them to have a spotlight species aside from orchid mantises which i'm pretty sure everyone knows about
Tumblr media
tldr: impossible question there are millions if not billions of species of insects and we discover new ones all the time, how can i choose just one with so many options???
