Their rivalry never went away, exactly, just mellowed. They would both compete over just about anything; Pansy and Hermione had made weary eye contact over pancake flipping contests, drawn-out gardening battles, and a particularly bizarre week where they swapped wardrobes due to an argument over style v comfort.

Ron had predicted it would die out when Scorpius joined their family, but it only switched to contests over telling the best stories (Daddy does better voices, but Papa's are dreamier), or making the best snacks (Daddy's toasties are meltier in the middle), or whatever else they could gloat and bicker over.

When Lily was 12, she rolled her eyes and condescendingly encouraged them to "play nicely" after they turned family games night into a weeks-long single-elimination tournament. Uncle George adjudicated the fanciest dinner competition that led to the ban on lighting alcohol (or anything else) on fire, and when Scorpius brought Alice home to meet his family, he insisted that his parents have a "normalness competition", the rules of which were that the first person to get competitive about anything lost.

They were still engaged in that competition three months later, and in spite of their better judgment, the rest of the family had quietly placed bets on who would break first, and how. Hermione, of all people, was caught subtly egging them into a contest to see who could plan the best group holiday.

"I don't see why we shouldn't benefit from their nonsense for once," she'd said with a sniff when Rose and Lily called her up on it. "Or don't you want to go to Mallorca and Prague on their sickle?"

"You've all got it wrong," Ron whispered proudly. "My wife is the most cutthroat one of all."

Regulus was an observer. He was quiet but he heard and saw everything. People trusted him with secrets, and often he wasn't entirely sure why. But he knew everything about everyone, their hopes, their goals, their secrets, and most dangerously, their weaknesses

Regulus was an opponent. He was quick but he was thorough and always finished. People picked fights him, and often he wasn't entirely sure why. But he knew how to fight, to duel, to hex, to curse, and most dangerously, how to win.

Regulus found however that the best way to win was to disable your opponent. To use everything you knew about them to take them down from their core. Regulus didn't fight fair, he fought, first and foremost, to protect himself.

And maybe it was because of his childhood, his parents, his brother... Regulus didn't care to think too hard about the why, but he knew he learned somewhere along the way that best way to protect himself was to keep people away.

When he felt threatened, he chose to protect himself in the way he knew how. When he thought someone he cared about was threatened, he chose to protect them in the way he knew how. And when he was the one doing the threatening, well... he would protect them from himself by fighting, by using their secrets against them, and by ensuring to push them away so that they would never come back.

Which is exactly what he did in this moment.

"James, you don't understand. You are just completely useless here! I have the power to actually make this better, I do! And you think you can stand there, telling me it'll all be okay, yet you can't actually do anything of substance to help! You think you, with your perfect happy life and perfect happy family, know anything about pressure!"

And with those words, nearly yelled and mostly spat, Regulus watched as James was decimated. He watched as James recoiled, as the light in James' eyes faltered, as James' breath stuck in his throat.

Regulus watched as he used James' greatest fear against him. He watched as his words struck and slapped and made the man he loved bleed. He watched James' stomach sink, and processed what tools he used to disarm his opponent, and immediately recognized his mistake. He wasn't fighting an enemy.

He watched the consequences of his win. And if this was winning, when it came to James, he only ever wanted to lose.
