decided to go sunbringer designs for once. I have so many words oh my god

so. uh,

I am so normal about sunbringer joel smallishbeans so normal I swear. he's planning to throw the o from his name at scott btw.

... he and scar are related but I'm not explaining further until the actual fic about it comes out because there's so much plot significance in the smallishbeans.

... grian. has a book. that he borrowed from the Library. it's very relevant I swear the concept of the library is a plot point.

Also grians eyes are technically green! With a bit of purple and just. a layer of Dark over them to make them less neon green. its not in his genetics to have neon eyes. unlike scar and I swear their eye colors are relevant but like in a weird queerplatonic scarian dl based bit in the grian chapter of the fic

Mumbo is a long cat and being held by me specifically those hands are how I draw my mc skin. I wanted to draw him as this meme since 2021 but he's very hard for me to draw so I took the one time I'll ever draw him and did this.

Jimmy is. a creature. that has bird features but also cod features bc again half of the plot of sunbringer is based on empires 1. Also the bird he's holding is singing. And joel is stealing the song bc he has music type magic.

Scott! Is the one guy I can talk about! Because he already appeared in the fic. He's part ender dragon and like. a child of stars? I have a lot of times I drew him before I think but idk how much of it I uploaded before so yeah. Please ask me about sunbringer scott smajor he's one of the only ones I can talk about and he has so much lore going for him he's so dear to me

impulse is. technically part ender dragon too? the specifics will be explained in his chapter of yhiwu (alongside. a lot of magic lore. like a lot. I have half that speech written already it's basically looking the empires fic in the eyes and going "fight me uwu")

And because impulse is aligned to shadows skizz gets to be some form of light dragon descendant? Like light isn't directly an element in the magic of this universe but it does have an equivalent in the element of Life, which connects to truth and love, whereas shadows and theatrics (and storytelling in general) is always aligned to whatever element is considered dark; in this magic system, being Void.

... ngl the only note I have on the bdubs design is that it's accidentally inspired by my human design for the main character in the show I'm writing. Bracelets and sparkly eyes and a t-shirt and. Crimes.

also not much on the cleo design she was just fun to draw but the implications of her existence are spoilers and also not really visually indicative bc idk what a "zombie hybrid" would look like so she just looks. funky. her background is all stitched together btw I finally had a use for the dashed lines brush :D

martyn and ren are. BIG spoilers. But only to like chapter 5 of the current fic. I will say I highly enjoy their existence tho. Also my ren designs always have hawaiian patterned shirts its a personality trait he seems to possess. Also his glasses are like. a hologram? bc his ears are Dog so he cant have normal glasses w like. the things that go behind ur ears.

lizzie is. also very important. she gets the two animals thing like jimmy bc axolotl and cat were her empires animals. also her buns are heart shaped I saw some fanart of that and its really cute so I also have that. and she's also looking at the long mumbo! very confused.

bigb. scares me. like yeah secret life really be mans villain arc. I tried to reflect that by actually straight up mirroring his eyes and having him be. the only guy looking straight at u. he can see u. u can run but u cant hide. also he gets cookies. also also drawing facial hair is hard he's the only time I ever managed to make facial hair look. normal. ever. wont happen again.

gem is being adorable and also definitely a deer hybrid dont mind the magic or stuff its fine (her chapter is. third in the roster. I literally just need to finish the impulse chapter to convince myself that its ok to upload her immediately after ch2).

and pearl! who we know bc she gets first chapter of the fic and thats already out. her eyes are a bit like moons btw. also she's doing magic back at gem which is cute I think. idk.

also half of them have fancy hair shines. like joel having beans that get progressively smaller. or pearl having moons. :D

best experiences — I love, love, love making friends with other muns! ^^ Plotting and sending stupid thread ideas. Even if we're not actively RPing because life sucks, I love having that connection to other muns.

pet peeves / dealbreakers — Vagueposting or excessive godmodding. Also, it's just because my muse is fickle, but I need paragraph style replies. I don't like "[character]: *does thing*" style RP. I also have a hard time with RP partners that are excessively pushy. I've been burned by them before and they've killed my ability to write for characters.

muse preference ( fluff, angst, smut ) — I'm gonna be real honest with you. I fucking thrive on emotional and physical Hurt/Comfort threads. I usually can't write threads without it eventually getting at least a little angsty (but there needs to be comfort eventually). But I try really, really, REALLY hard to avoid intense threads on here because I hate to be a downer for my RP partners. Either related or unrelated, I really love writing smut (though, people here probably would never guess that). As a fanfic author, pretty much all I write is smut and angst/whump. That seeps into my RPs.

plot or memes — Memes are fun but I really adore plotting. I want to figure out some crazy place for our muses to go!

long or short replies — I love long replies, getting and giving! RPs are like writing a fanfic with a friend. I will go back and reread old replies to read through the story. When I find I've gotten a long reply, I'll usually smile and reread it like three times before I even reply.

best time to write — Usually from like 10pm to 3am. It's when my brain is most active and the world is most quiet.

Are you like your muse — I feel I'm a lot like Luffy, honestly. I'm loud, I'm clingy, I love to eat, and I have a bad habit of wanting to punch things (I don't, but I want to).

😎 What fics do you prefer on a scale of canon compliant to wildly original?

Huh... for me what really matters is characterization. The premise can be wildly different or just ignore canon entirely as long as the characters still feel right. Canon compliance can often be a signal in that it usually means the author cares about characterization, but its not necessary for me.

There are definitely fics that lose me because their central conceit does away with some core appeal of the source material for me (one of the things I love about Amphibia is the trios bond as childhood friends for instance, so AU's the separate them from birth often hold limited appeal to me.)

So in summation. Good Characterization is important and there are certain keystones that that need to remain for me to be invested initially. Otherwise Im pretty open.

🤩 What led to your interest in the fandom?

Honestly? Straight up can't remember. I heard about Amphibia back when I was watching Season 1 of the Owl House but it didn't hook me then. Then back in late 2021 I have foggy memories of seeing some Marcanne art from some Owl House artists I followed.

I had also I think heard of some whispers of what happened in true colors.

I put it on in the background while I did other stuff. I enjoyed some of the more dramatic episodes like Toad Tax and Jailbreak and got fully invested once I got to reunion which only rode higher as I binged season 2 with great intererest.

Total number of completed stories: 17. 15, if working on/planning sequels means a story isn’t completed.

Total word count: About 175k words (since I don’t remember where did the 2021/2022 cut-off occur in TCFM)

Fandoms: Doctor Who and Doctor Who alone. I really do put the O in OTP.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?: More fics but less fic, if that makes sense: I expected to do another longfic in the autumn, but wrote a lot of one-shots instead.

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?: Curator/Shalka!Master. A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one…

What's your favorite story of the year?: Time Calling For Me. It was such a relief to finish it and publish it after a year of work!

Did you take any writing risks this year?: Well, does simply publishing my writings count? I haven’t really participated in fandom as an active writer before, mostly lurking in read-only.

Do you have any fanfic goals for the New Year?: Finish my main WIP at the moment. Write at least one more longfic from those I have planned. Fill the prompt from the D/M Anon Kink Meme that concerns the enthusiastic sexualisation of Crispy!Master. Begin the sequel to Time Calling For Me.

My best story of the year:... This is an unbearable choice to make. I’ll go with Time Calling For Me once more. It was a lot of effort that ended up very much worth it.

My most popular story of the year: Time Calling For Me. A bit of an unfair competition, given that it’s a longfic against a lot of one-shots, but still, it is (and deservedly so!)

Story that was most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: None, I state with pride. The universe had already appreciated me far, far more than I have expected it to when I published my first fic.

Most fun to write: There isn’t a story that wouldn’t be fun to write (or I just wouldn’t have written it), but I’m going to go with Time Calling For Me yet again. Spicing the Key to Time up with the Master is fun.

Single sexiest (or cutest) moment: Prove Piercing Earnest (in its entrety) for sexiest, the epilogue of Time Calling For Me for cutest.

Hardest to write: my current main WIP, which I expected to finish in 3 weeks but only got a half of it in 3 months. I feel like I’ve never done as many rewrites on a fic as I have with this one. (Still, I know it will be worth it. It has to be.)

Biggest disappointment: Devoting less time to writing in the first few months in the year than I would want to.

Biggest surprise: The experience of posting fics and seeing that someone out there actually appreciates and loves them. That’s it.

More romantic,platonic, and familial between aliens and humans

Romantic Relationships

-Some aliens have very Rube Goldberg styles of courting while others are very straight forward

-blush appears on mammilain species but not on reptilian or avian, but that doe snot mean those species do not blush, they just hsow it differently

-i have a feeling that nearly all aliens can be embarrassed easily, so when a human flirts, its great

-meeting the parents could be very weird for alien species simply because either a) everyone knows each other or b) no one cares who you date in space

-ALIEN SO'S BEING PROTECTIVE

-on the above thought, humans have all sorts of social issues so if a human had an alien s.o, i headcanon they would be very protective

-small human, tall alien or vice versa

-the tension between very short humans and very tall humans confuse most aliens until it happens to them, then its "oh"

-some aliens are like cats which means courting gifts are like enemies heads or some sort of trophy

-polyamory is normal in some species and it is completely normal to have 2+ partners

-a lot of children that have both human and alien genes but how they appear can vary due to how strong the genetics are.

-humanoids can mate with each other but not more avaian or reptiallian or even very aquatic species. So those who cannot mate will adopt

Familial Relantionships

-Children are able to speak more than 3 languages, 2 being their parents original language and one which could be galactic basic or something. English is spoken within the galaxy but is not the main language

-children learning acceptance of differences from a very young age where that's skin colour, heritage, accents, sexuality, gender etc

-very mixed families, for example - alien+alien+human (parents) with alien/human mix and full human children or human+alien with 6 adopted or foster kids. Heterosexual, Homosexual, Bisexual, polyamorous, and so on couples and families exist.

-parents have either wallets filled with pictures or at least 3 full albums full of photos that they pull out to embarrass their kids

-found family is very common. ( idk if i mentioned this already)

-Child services are very effective on some planets but on others are crap

-children who are orphans sometimes have people who help them and create safe spaces for them

-mental health issues are treated seriously in a lot of families because it is important for the members to be healthy

Platonic Relationships

-Aliens bonding over their love for their human friends/colleagues/kids/SO

-give me a human showing an alien a meme and the alien doing what all the dads do when you show them something

-t-shirts that are " this is my alien -- >" "< --this is my human"

-aliens being mildly terrified of their human friends

-on the above headcanon, humans have the whole deathworlders and also having the damage predictability of an iphone

Aliens and dealing with animals

I find this hilarious because while aliens definitely have animal species on their planets and have domesticated them. Just compared to animals we find on earth, it's either that aliens are terrified or are not. Its one or the other. No one can change my mind.

Here's a scene.

Alien: What is this quadruped, furry animal on your lap human?

Human: Oh, this is Lasagna, they're my cat. I have two other cats, Loaf and Pebble. Lasagna's old and Loaf is a kitten - she scratches everything! * points to the sofa in the corner* Look what she did to my sofa! Pebbles yells a lot.

Alien: How did you domesticate such violent and destructive creatures.

Human: Through food. These fuzzballs love food! * nuzzles into Lasagna*

Alien: On an evolutionary perspective, are they related to any other species.

Human: They're related to big cats like tigers, lions, panthers. Any big cat, our cats are somehow related to. Someone I know is a zoologist and he says that the big cats are really friendly if they know you, and they love pets.

Alien: You mean that these small creatures are related to these dangerous creatures?

Human: Yep, but it's alright, the worst these kitties can do are scratch.

Alien * equally terrified and curious as Pebbles comes close and nudges their leg, * : Who is this? * Pebbles scratches*

Aliens and Humans Relationship Headcanons

General relationship headcanons, romatimic, platonic, etc. Cause my brain really ~Aliens like Humans~

- You know whenever there's a newborn baby and everyone coos over them? Yeah that's Aliens to Humans. Some are super tall and some are super short but it is agreed that Humans are ~baby~

- Most Aliens that have interacted/worked/met a bunch of humans has a favorite or a preferred human.

- Headcanoning one species of Aliens that are similar to cats. So when humans do they pspspspsp, these tall, scary looking humanoid/hybrid figures stumble over like cats. ALso this species are the same with cats and knocking things off places and chasing laser pointers.

- Imagine an Alien and Human who are together. But of course the Alien is scary and mean and in the middle of telling someone to go piss themselves, their human S.O shows up and the Alien melts into such a softy.

- Aliens either are super scared or super fond of humans. It makes sense given that Earth is Space Australia and we do banthashit things here.

- Probably classes at alien schools about Earth and Humans and there could be Human Transfers who are horrified at how Humans are presented. Human transfer students most likely being asked about human stuff

- Humans in public or in private are cuddlebugs, we like physical touch especially with the ones we love.

- Furries scare everyone, I mean have you seen them? ( this is a joke, I've met some furries and their all very nice :D)

- A thought, which i think is extremely funny, is how Aliens see our technology and compared to their technology is probably super old but humans make up for it with the enthusiasm.

- What about Aliens and swear words? I think this will be one of the next posts.

I think that aliens would be extremely weirded out by third culture kids.

Here's my thinking. Aliens come from planets that have only one ruler or government so laws are the same for the entire planet. If you look at Earth that is not the case with how our countries have different laws and everything else. This is not to say that aliens don't have municipalities or regions but maybe not as complex as having 195 countries each with their own government and laws.

I feel like a conversation would end up like this between an alien and a third culture kid.

Alien: Human? What is a "Third Culture Kid"?

HUman: Oh that's where you are from one country, but you live in another and you speak a completely different language.

Alien: I thought all planets had one government. That is standard on Earth?

Human: Uhhh, no.

Alien: What do you mean?

Human: We have... 195 countries

Alien: What is a country?

Human: uhhh a country is... an area that is governed.

Alien: So a region? We have 5 of those on my home planet of *unintelligible name* What about you?

Human: uhhh.... 195.

Alien: How many? My hearing is not great

Human: 195. We have 195 countries.

Alien: *Visible confusion* 195? How do you agree on anything?

Human: We have Unions and groups to agree on things.

Alien: So this "Third Culture Kid"? What is it?

Human: I'm considered a third culture kid. Born in Austria, Raised in Australia and my first language is French. So a third culture is kid is someone who is born somewhere, speaks a completely different first language and whose raised somewhere other than their home country.

Alien: Humans are confusing.

Imagine aliens hearing a thick accent for the first time. Like I'm talking heavy Scottish or Irish specifically just because it's too funny. But just imagine how funny it would be to other humans. We already laugh at the hilarity of the irish and scottish way of speaking so this would be humours. Just think an alien thinking its normal human and then it talks with such a thick accent that the alien just blue screens.

For the fanfic writer emoji ask: 🥺, 🛒, 🦅, 💔

Hey Nova! :D 🥺= Is there a certain type of moment or common interaction between your characters that never fails to put you in your feels? Whenever I write Optimus Prime and / or Elita One being tender with baby Bumblebee. So much fluff. 💗 Also, when the Hero of Time is allowed to cry and someone gives him a hug or much needed words of encouragement. 🛒= What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc. Well, my favorite tag is apparently "Angst with Emotional Hurt / Comfort," lol. I love writing angst, but only if the struggle isn't for nothing—there's always hope, always some light at the end of the tunnel, even if things don’t turn out the way you expected. I also really like including the sky in fics apparently? I seem to subconsciously use sky imagery often to set the mood / represent the situation / represent an absent character, whether that's with the moon, the sun, stars, clouds, etc. 🦅= Do you outline fics or fly by the seat of your pants? I do both, but first and foremost I fly by the seat of my pants! Whee! If I plan too much ahead of time, it actually stifles my creativity and stops me from writing the actual story. So I jump into things headfirst, and let the ideas take me wherever they want to go. Once a story has about 20,000 words, that's when I start to sense an underlying structure is forming by itself. At that point I reread the whole thing and start breaking it into chapters, which helps me plan for the rest of the fic. (i.e. Oh, this scene would be a nice transition between these two parts, I should write that next.) For shorter fics...most of the time I really have no idea where I'm going. :) I just start, and see where I end up. My characters often surprise me by doing things I don't expect, which is super fun. Oh, and related to this, I don't write chapters in order haha. I jump all over the place! That's why I can't ever post a long, plot-heavy fic chapter-by-chapter until the whole thing is finished. 💔= Is there a fic of yours that broke your heart? YES. Let's see...most of them aren't yet posted. Of the ones that are, "Ever With Me" hurts a lot but in a good way. "Promise" makes me sad too. Un-posted culprits include 1) a fanciful, storybook-feel Skyward Sword WIP about Hylia and the First Hero, 2) a RiD canon-divergent WIP about Soundwave trying to get out of the Shadowzone, 3) another canon-divergent RiD fic where Steeljaw does something absolutely terrible, and...hmm... 4) a mid-OoT story where Zelda wants nothing more than to see Link again after the separation of seven years. Catching a glimpse of him from a distance...and then walking closer and closer...until your steps involuntarily quicken and a giant grin overcomes your face and—breathless—you race over to fully behold the majesty of this truck and you find yourself standing there in awe...it is such an amazing experience, I wish every Transformers fan could have that for themselves. Say what we will about the Bayverse, but this truck is absolutely beautiful and in the end I am so thankful that he exists :D

Continuity: Cyberverse! One day out of boredom, Starscream thought it would be fun to hack into the Ark's computers and scramble the settings a bit. What he was NOT expecting was a livid Teletraan-X tracking his signal and chasing him over land, air and sea in previously-unknown vehicle forms. Previously-unknown, Very Well Armed vehicle modes. Why the Teletraan needs to transform into vehicle modes at all is a mystery, but Starscream's too out of breath from dodging missiles to ask. For this ask game

This one was super fun but really challenging, I wanted to pick someone unexpected haha. I know Teletraan-X can hover but I think it would hilarious if there was a montage where he chased someone over multiple scenes and changed into a different mode in each one for seemingly no reason 😂

My #1 post of 2022

Rewatching Darkness Rising for the Idkhowmany-th time for fic-writing purposes and getting hit by all kinds of feels :’) I never thought about this before but...in the first episode, right after she “meets” Jack and runs into the two Eradicons, Arcee never once calls for help. She’s angry about Cliff’s death and wants to be left alone, but then accidentally gets Jack involved in a scuffle and only thinks about getting him far enough away from downtown so she can fight the Eradicons herself. She thinks she’s got the situation under control. She’s not worried. She’s upset and mad, but she’s got it. But then Bumblebee shows up on the freeway, right behind her, and slams the Decepticons into the wall. Bumblebee especially; Bulkhead took a while to get there, supposedly due to traffic, but I think ‘Bee might have commed him on the way once he realized Arcee was in trouble. My heart is so warmed by imagining what had happened. I can just see Bumblebee noticing Arcee race away from the gravesite, worriedly watching her go, and then turning to Optimus like “Can I follow her? Please? Just in case?” And Optimus Prime ponders for a moment, and ’Bee bounces on his heels, visibly nervous, and finally Optimus gives a subtle, slow-blinking nod and Bumblebee FLIPS into vehicle mode and books it after her. This show. It never gets old.

AKAASHI writes love letters to you, but never sends them. he thinks that his love is best confessed through the words that he’s placed on paper so he writes them whenever he’s missing you. he also expresses his love verbally but he just had so icy to give he wants to use it all in the best way possible.

TENDOU buys things like plants or something that can be named and names them after you. there’s like 10 things in his house you can for sure bet that are named after you like paintings or little trinkets that he picked up while shopping. you never ask him how he manages to keep up with how many things that has the same name as you.

KUROO will pick you up bridal style whenever it’s raining and there is a puddle around or even if you’re simply tired. he doesn’t care how wacky it looks in public he just wants you to make sure you’re always comfortable even if that means letting you hang off his back while you two shop all around the town.

ATSUMU will sneak kisses and glances while you aren’t paying attention. he’s just so infatuated with you that he doesn’t even notice when he’s doing it he just does it. they are almost always innocent, chaste ones that just showcases his love for you. whenever you point out that you knew he was staring or you stare at him after he’s given you a kiss, he’ll try his hardest to hide the blush that plays on his face.

MATSUKAWA likes to send you tiktoks and memes at the latest time at night. you’re so worried about his sleep schedule but he always says that he’s fine all while continuing to send you stuff. you’ll wake up to about 20-30 messages full of youtube vids, tiktoks, and pictures. you won’t lie and say they aren’t funny through!

Your Content and Accessibility For the Blind

Hello everyone! I was thinking about accessibility and wanted to make a post to help creators. This is going to cover general accessibility for blind people interacting with your content. Some of it may be obvious to some and this is by no means comprehensive, so feel free to add anything you think of that is helpful. Also, I wanted to include some ideas for DeafBlind people, but I am not DeafBlind or D/deaf, so I simply listed some general accessibility ideas. If anyone has any other tips or things to consider, please add them in a comment or message and I’ll include it here.

Remember, blindness exists on a spectrum. This post will focus on making things accessible for totally blind people, although these tips can also be beneficial for people with residual vision who use screen readers to reduce eye strain, for small text, for clarity, etc. D/deafness and DeafBlindness are also on spectrums. Some DeafBlind people have some hearing, some vision, a little of both, or none of either. If someone asks you for better or different accessibility services for your content, listen and try to accommodate them as best you can. I have provided some links and resources here to attempt to explain accessibility for blind people, which will include blind people who are DeafBlind. The point is accessibility issues can come from both sides whether it be the audio or visual sides.

Online Content:

GIFs, Pictures, Fan-art, PSA and info posts, Memes, Screenshots of Text Posts or Screenshots of Twitter Threads- Provide an image description on your original post! This is the best option, as you probably know your content best and what you wish to draw attention to. More importantly, every reblog will include an image description, which means the blind person doesn’t need to hunt for an image description in the reblogs! If you know more than one language, include image descriptions in those languages.

Note: Always include descriptions when you post images with or about blind people or characters. Particularly fan-art you made of blind characters. If you don’t, consider why and think about how it would feel to be shut out of something about yourself.

What should you include?

Write Image Description in brackets and include End of Image Description at the end for clarification. As for what you should describe, it depends on what the picture is. Include where it is from. For example, “a screenshot of a Twitter thread by BlindBetaIsAwesome”. Include the text and describe any GIFs or images it includes. Write everything out as they appear. Describe emojis as well. When writing out screen names or hashtags, capitalize the first letter of each word. Otherwise screen-readers read it oddly. For example instead of #accessibilityfortheblind try #AccessibilityForTheBlind. If you think someone will want to search a name, include a link.

You should describe what is important in the image, especially for conveying information or humor. General ideas include: image origin, who is in the image, what they’re doing, any relevant colors or clothing, objects they’re holding, their facial expression, any emojis, and any text in the image. Blind people do like to know about color. For NSFW stuff, include ‘NSFW’ at the start, but other than that, yes, blind people also generally like NSFW things described.

Fanfiction:

Generally, fanfic is very accessible to screen-readers and Braille Displays. However, there are a few ways you can make it more accessible.

Pictures: Include alt-text for any images you post such as artwork or character social media posts. Describe it like you would any other image. Alt-text is different from an image description because instead of a screen-reader saying “image” when it finds an image, it will describe the image. An image description is the text included beneath the picture that everyone can see. Including some kind of description, especially for plot-relevant images, can allow all blind readers to experience the fic.

Chat conversations: Again, for hashtags and screen names, capitalize the first letter of each word for the ease of screen-readers. For characters who don’t use capitalization much, you can add a hyphen between each word to make it easier to read like this: blind-beta-likes-fanfic-too.

Emojis: Screen readers can’t fully read emojis like this one that uses keyboard slashes and symbols to create an image ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (image description: emoji of a person shrugging with both palms lifted upwards. End description.) However, they can read emojis that come on a phone such as 🧁which screen readers read as “cupcake”.

Podfics are also good for hearing people with no vision or reduced vision. Having a podfic with good quality (maybe one that can describe images found in the story) will reduce some of the issues listed here and give blind people another, fun way to interact with content. However, I would try to keep in mind the things I mentioned above for the sake of screen-readers and Braille Displays, which are particularly important for some DeafBlind people who may want to read your fanfic and may not be able to hear well enough to use a screen-reader.

Lastly, keep in mind that any kind of comic may be inaccessible to some blind people. Write with them in mind. Include a message at the start of the story, maybe that it contains material from the comic, graphic novel, or print cartoon. If you know of a comic dub, link to it. If there is none, include details in the story so that a non-manga or non-comic reader would be able to understand.

Web-Comics/Web-Graphic-Novels:

First, I did research and found a comic book store for the blind called Comics Empower. Unfortunately, when I click the link provided on Twitter and the articles I read, the site seems to be down.

However, this is about you all and sharing your comics with blind readers. You have a few options:

Alt-text. This is descriptions directly ‘inside’ the image, which is not visible to everyone. You can read about alt-text for comics specially here and you can read general info for alt-text for screen-readers and Braille Displays here.

Image descriptions. These are descriptions of each comic page (hopefully with a paragraph for each panel) that can be visible to anyone. You can describe your comic, who is in it, what they’re doing, and what they’re saying, probably beneath the image.

Comic Audio Performances. These are accessible to both blind and sighted audiences. These are videos using actors for the dialogue, sound effects, and moving comic panels. Pros for this style include increased viewership, increased accessibility for the blind, and perhaps more revenue if you have a way to monetize the content. Cons include that it is more work, could potentially cost money when hiring actors initially, may not be accessible to anyone with hearing loss, and may still require a bit of audio description for some panels that are hard to follow with only sound effects.

What can you do?

A few ideas I had were to use a combination of image descriptions and audio performances to make the comics accessible to a number of people who may be blind, or DeafBlind. Having options is helpful. For ther issue of some panels needing extra description in order to make sense, I thought of including time-stamps and descriptions in the description section, labeling it as image descriptions for the blind. Include dialogue for reference. Or an audio description could be added such as:

Audio narration: “Bee sits on a couch writing.”

Sound Effect of a purring cat.

Audio narration: “Blind Beta picks up an orange cat and puts him on the couch next to them.”

Dialogue: “I’m so glad I have a cat to cuddle with!”

I will touch on this in the video section, but while it is sadly not possible to add audio descriptions onto YouTube as of 2021, you can add them manually through websites you like YouDescribe. For your comics, I suggest, reading about YouDescribe, downloading the app, creating a narration transcript for your web comic performance, and posting the described audio performance onto YouDescribe. Post both versions as close to the same time as you can, and include a link to the described version in the YouTube description. A glance at YouDescribe will tell you not all videos are available with descriptions and not all blind people are aware of this service. Not all videos are searchable in their library either. However, it is an option I wanted to include.

You could also simply include the audio narration in your main YouTube video if you would like. Or any combination of my suggestions you feel comfortable with.

YouTube Videos/Video Clips:

I wanted to cover YouTube videos and video clips shared on websites like tumblr. For small clips, image descriptions and transcripts could probably be listed together. I have seen this done and it seems to help people.

Again, the original poster should post the description with the video. This is because they know the most important parts and because all reblogs of the post will include the description, so no one will have to hunt down a description that may not exist.

For the clip or clip compilation, mention where the clips come from, who is in them, and what they are doing. You could probably have a separate paragraph for each clip and include times-stamps if possible.

For videos you post on YouTube, descriptions can be very helpful! Unfortunately, YouTube does not support adding an audio description track at this time. Ideally, YouTube would have a description track one could turn on and off such as with subtitles. Until then, if you want to add a description, you should add one yourself when you post the video onto YouTube or any other website.

Before I get into how, let’s go over something else.

What videos need descriptions?

-Recipe videos - especially ones with only text. Ingredients, steps, measures, methods, any flourishes or special scenery (such as when shopping for ingredients) should be described. Blind people don’t just want you to read the recipe to them. They want to know what is happening in the video and how it is being done.

-Tutorials - These often contain a voice-over and accompanying images to demonstrate. A creator can opt to simply include more visual description along with the other information in the voice-over or add extra narration later (see the “How?” section below). For these videos, make sure to avoid or expand on any visually dependent parts such as “click here” or “fold here” or “when you finish, it should look like this”. Videos that contain only text and demonstration, however, will need a more traditional audio description the same as any other video.

-Silent aesthetic videos - Sometimes containing music or focusing on natural noise, these videos are usually vlogs with soothing activities or daily routines. They often show scenery, pretty things, or tours. Because these videos are silent, sometimes containing only text, they are not accessible. However, they can be easy to describe, perhaps in a soothing or educational fashion.

-Music videos - Because these videos are by nature visual, they may not be accessible. They may also have inconsistent, poor, or changing lighting for aesthetic purposes or set changes. This means audio descriptions would be helpful.

-Text-based videos - Obviously these are not accessible or may be difficult to read depending on font size, style, or background. For these, putting the text in the description may suffice. Label it so that blind people are aware they are getting the same material. If the text includes pictures or short clips, you could also simply include your own narration on the video itself or see the “How?” section below for another alternative.

-Game Play-Throughs - Games can sometimes be completely inaccessible pe very difficult depending on the person’s level of site. A lot of video games a not accessible or difficult to play, with quick-moving graphics, perhaps small text, or other difficulties. Because of this, blind people may enjoy game plays on YouTube for video games and mobile games.

-Skits or other performances - Think of these as Netflix shows with audio description tracks. Blind people may miss out on some visual humor, plot elements, or other fun visual aspects like costumes.

-Original Films, Animation, Clips From Shows - Again, think of it as any TV show that needs to description to cover visual aspects of what is happening. Scenery, characters, what they’re doing, any text, facial expressions, etc.

Pet videos- Because pets are cute and they should be described! Especially because these videos are sometimes hard to follow, such as a pet doing a trick.

How? How Do We Provide This?

There is always the option to add your own audio descriptions. However, that way confuse already-existing narration or may not be possible for already-published videos. You may also have trouble speaking and wish for someone else to provide audio descriptions. The video may be a music video or one you want to remain silent for the aesthetic. You may want to add a description to a video you enjoy that is not one you uploaded personally.

A free website and mobile app called YouDescribe can help with that. It allows people to add audio descriptions to videos on YouTube. You can even describe videos on a wishlist. Find out more here.

If you describe your video or have it described, be sure to link to the YouDescribe video in the description of your YouTube version so that people can find it easily, or note that it is available on YouDescribe.

This site may be a bit too niche, but I figure if it helps one person, I’ll be happy. My entire blog is niche, when you think about it- targeting writers who specifically want to write and read about blind characters. It’ll be fine.

Keep in mind that audio descriptions may not be accessible to all DeafBlind people. An inclusive option could be to include a description under your video so people with Braille Displays can read it.

Print Books, Audiobooks, Large Print Books, or Braille Books?

Let’s get into something you writers might be interested in. Books! Let’s say you wrote a book with a blind character. How do you make sure it can be accessed by blind readers? You want to have a few options.

Print books - These are accessible to people with reduced vision. It is also possible to scan print books to read with voiceover, but I can’t imagine many people buying books simply to scan unless they borrowed/found it. So it could be an option, I suppose. Scanning books also takes time because you need to do each individual page.

Audiobooks - Audiobooks are great. They are accessible to blind people who can hear. They are cheaper to produce than Braille books, take up less space, and are better for the environment. They can be expensive when you buy them. Libraries have extensive collections now, however, because libraries don’t usually have any Braille books and very few large print books, not all blind people use them, even for digital access. However,many blind people love audiobooks so it a good way to make sure your content is accessible.

As of now, my library app is accessible with a screenreader, so reading audiobooks is possible. E-books are not currently accessible with a screen-reader on this particular app.

Make sure to release your print books and audiobooks at the same time or as soon as possible. It isn’t fair for blind people to have to wait, although there are cases where not having an audiobook is understandable. Keep in mind that the less options you have, the less accessible your content will be.

Large Print Books - I used to get large print books myself. I would say it is less likely publishers will want to publish large print books because they are, of course, larger and take up more space. (Not as much as Braille books, but we’ll get into that.) As you may assume, they are also less popular with readers. Publishers make exceptions for textbooks, so if you are making a textbook or an educational book, particularly one with drawings, publishers might allow it. They also might consider making large print editions of children’s books. Large print books can sometimes be found at libraries, although they are usually crammed into their own limited section. That shows how rare it is for large print books to be printed compared to regular-sized books. I have an extra note about this in the children’s book section, but for the most part, I think you can get away with not having a large print edition of your book.

Braille Books - I should you one doesn’t just make a Braille book. Feelings toward them are generally complicated. They can wear down over time, cost a lot, and take up a lot of space. One volume of a book is several volumes of Braille books. Libraries don’t generally have them- you have to request them from various places like The National Library Service for the Blind (NLS). For more information about obtaining or borrowing Braille books, look here.

Braille Books have largely been replaced by refreshable Braille displays and audiobooks. However, they are still important. They can also help DeafBlind people, if a book cannot be read on a Braille display (see the section on e-books below). My suggestion would be to skip Braille books unless you are writing for children (see the Children’s Books section) or your book contains many diagrams that need to be embossed.

Children’s Books -

I wanted to briefly discuss children’s books. With children’s books, you will, of course, want to have a print book and an audiobook available, perhaps even someone reading the book on YouTube. If the book has pictures, descriptions of the pictures would be nice. This is also where I think large print and Braille books may be not only possible or more likely, but important. Children are just learning to read and will continue to explore a love for reading. Therefore, a lack of reading material can be challenging.

If possible, you may want to consider asking your publisher if large print or Braille versions are possible. While websites are available so that children can get books, you may want to ask for your book to be published in these formats if your story has a blind MC.

Braille literacy is declining in the blind community, with children (and frankly many others) choosing to use VoiceOver and audiobooks to read rather than Braille. Being able to read helps reinforce spelling, grammar, meaning in ways that are not possible with having things read to you. That said, children should also be encouraged to learn technology and use audiobooks when they feel comfortable.

If you are publishing a children’s book, particularly with a blind MC, consider what your options are for increasing accessibility.

E-Books:

This is one of the more accessible options, as it can be read with a screen-reader or Braille display. E-books are also common enough that they are released at the same time as print books. The text can usually be adjusted and readers usually have a Search feature. However, accessibility is still a problem with e-books. While authors cannot fix this, they should be aware of it. oh gosh. so I’ve recieved many wonderful, thoughtful comments, and I genuinely treasure all of them. But perhaps the most memorable is one on my very first published Black Sails fic, in over our heads.

I had basically never published fic before that point and was just. Not used to comments and didn’t expect any. And I can still remember how just over the MOON happy I was to get this one.

Valentine's Day at the Roadhouse - A Recap

TL:DR

Actors Chad Linberg (Ash) and Samantha Ferris (Ellen) made tweets to role play a Valentine’s Day celebration at the Roadhouse. Several of their comments seemed to be suggesting that they would celebrate the wedding of Dean and Cas, and fans took this idea and ran with it. On the fourteenth, fans held their own celebration across social media platforms by joyfully sharing writing, art, headcanons, and memes, getting #DeanCasWedding trending in the process. Ferris and Lindburg did not roleplay a wedding, and both actors became defensive when the subject was brought up, stating that holding a gay wedding would fail to “uphold the integrity & spirit of the show” and that they had never suggested anything else. Fans were hurt and frustrated by these responses, as well as Lindburg’s liking of a post that claimed Destiel supporters have been “gaslighting the rest of the fandom for 10+ years.” Other people associated with the Supernatural community including actor Kat Ramdeen, writer Eric Charmelo, and the official account for Stands merchandising, responded to fans in a more positive way.

Last week, actors Chad Linberg (Ash) and Samantha Ferris (Ellen) announced their decision to roleplay a Valentine’s day celebration at the Roadhouse. Lindburg and Ferris had already successfully liveblogged a birthday party for Dean Winchester on January 24 and the reopening of the Roadhouse bar on February 10 (Kat Ramdeen also rp-d this event.) (1)

Both Ferris and Lindburg mentioned “wedding season” in their posts, which piqued fan interest, and fans latched on to the idea that they might be planning a Deancas wedding. This theory was further supported by Lindburg’s own interactions with fans: [this one might be too confusing: at one point, he failed to like--or possibly liked and then quickly unliked, a tweet that read “don't like this reply if a deancas wedding is gonna happen at the roadhouse” (2). He directed fans with ‘questions’ to an account who was a public destiel shipper (3) He also responded to a tweet reading “people think you guys are celebrating a Destiel wedding, that isn’t the case of course.”  with “Um no sorry...you did NOT get the memo” (4)

On February 14 #DeanCasWedding trended on twitter as fans across the world staged their own, fan-created celebration by joyfully sharing writing, art, headcanons, and memes. Ferris and Lindburg wrote innocuous Roadhouse update tweets all day long, including a sequence where Lindburg got in a fight with Elvis, and concluding with the partial destruction of the Roadhouse by unknown forces. No mention was made of the wedding by either actor. 

However, partway through Monday February 15, Ferris and Lindburg began addressing questions as to why they had hinted they would hold a wedding and then not followed through.  

Chad Lindburg responded that he never intended to imply that he would hold a Deancas wedding, and issued this statement.  

“Yes, among other things, the Roadhouse does “weddings.” I had NO idea this would be taken out of context..If you thought you were sold something else, you weren't...this was a way to bring people together and have fun. State your views, however, I’ll be blocking any rude or nastiness today.”(5) 

Lindburg did go on to block multiple twitter users who tried to engage with him on this topic. Over the next few days, Lindburg’s tweets ranged from attempts to validate fan’s feelings, such as “No one is delusional. You're all validated. Remember, we're all just having fun with our imaginations. And actually, the Fandom has just as much weight as the actors. It goes both ways. We can't have one without the other. We're grateful for all of you.” (6) to hostile, such as replying “Thank you [hands clasped emoji]” to a tweet that read “Ironically the ones complaining about being gaslit by you are the ones that have been gaslighting the rest of the fandom for 10+ years.” (7) 

Samantha Ferris responded that they would never hold a DeanCas wedding because Supernatural is “a story about family, bonds, and supernatural power struggles. The direction has never included sexuality or romance” and that she believed that her and Lindburg’s “role is to uphold the integrity & spirit of the show” and that “it would be disrespectful to all the people who tried to tell this tale if we validated it [the Deancas relationship]” (8) Her full tweets on the matter read, 

“Ima say this once then move on. @ChadLindberg & I can’t follow you down that road. As part of the storyline, our role is to uphold the integrity & spirit of the show: it’s a story about family, bonds, and supernatural power struggles. The direction never included sexuality or romance. That was never what it was supposed to be about. So to honour the cast, crew, and creators, we respect their intentions. You wanna create your side story? Go for it. But it would be disrespectful to all the people who tried to tell this tale if we validated it…” 

Ferris and Lindburg have continued to roleplay their Roadhouse updates, although they have both lost followers in fan interest after the events of this week. 

Other people associated with the spn community responded more positively: Writer Eric Charmelo responded to the wedding posting by liking #DeancasWedding fanart (9). Actor Kat Ramdeen (Alex) tweeted on Valentine’s day 

“I love you #SPNFamily I see you” 

accompanied by a rainbow heart and a Social justice Pride Flag made up of hearts (10).  Stands, a company that sells fandom merchandise made in collaboration with the actors and gives a portion of proceeds to charity, sent out these two supportive tweets in response to the drama in the Supernatural community 

“I’ve just caught up and I’m sorry y’all are having a rough go. I love you. <3”  (11) 

and 

“It’s so rare I’m actually mad but to be clear- absolutely no one gets to define how you experience something you love.  Just go on with your bad selves and enjoy the things that make you happy.  As if the last two years haven’t been shit enough. Seize your moments, ignore the rest” (12)

Interview with bugs

bugs has 40 stories at Gossamer. They mostly focus on Mulder and Scully, but there are also some goodies featuring Reyes and Doggett. I’ve recced some of my favorites of her fics here before, including The Link. She also co-ran WhyIncision, a fun, smart X-Files mailing list that dissected fics like a book club. Big thanks to bugs for doing this interview.

Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?

Not really. While I was still in high school, I started watching the then 20 year old OG Star Trek and became a Trekkie of a sort. Starlog magazine, James Blish novels and the other novelizations, and while I was working as a library page, I found fanfiction one day among the periodicals.  Who knows how fanfiction ended up as part of a library's materials, but there it was, this tattered mimeographed collection. The fic that had the most impact on me was one where Nurse Chapel wrestled a giant alien snake to save Spock's life.

So when I got into XF, one of the first things I did was look for fanfic, knowing somewhere out there, Scully was wrestling a big snake for Mulder.

That experience showed me the power of fandom, that even without the internet, how the second generation of Trekkies joined the original group to advocate for the franchise to be revived. I remember sitting in the theater for that first awful Star Trek movie, choked up with what we'd done.

Tragic backstory way to say, no I'm not surprised that a well-produced show like XF would beget future generations of fans, and that they'd be chewing their way through the fanfic archives still being maintained.

What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?

I'm so grateful to the fandom. Literally formed the life I have today through the confidence it gave me. Many of my friends to this day are 'pocket friends' from the various fandoms I've been in, and the longest friendships were formed in XF. I learned how to write, both technically and finding my voice. I learned how to think analytically, more than any college courses.

The two most important things I took away were, write for yourself first and always, and shit ain't that damn important. In the end, it's a TV show.

Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)?

YIKES.  I came in at the Fight the Future summer hiatus, so the waning days of ATXC, then we moved to mailing lists, right?  Yahoo Groups was in there somewhere. Finally message boards. Live Journal rose up at the end of the run which began to fragment the fandom even before the show ended, along with the migration off our individual websites to Archive of Our Own, fanfiction.net and such. We went from group discussion platforms to 'come look at my blog for my thoughts'. It was different and I didn't particularly like it, but in the end, when I came back to fandom for a new show....I had to get a Live Journal. That's the most interesting part of fandom, that a platform doesn't mold a fandom; we use the platform and when it's no longer useful to us, we abandon it en mass.

What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general?

I've touched on that a bit, but to elaborate, I'm glad I started in the XF fandom. It had such high standards and I hope that I maintain those standards for myself to this day. These days, I don't usually have a beta reader, but that took a couple hundred posted fics to get to that point.

Having seen the same exact flamewars and divides and squabbles over and over, seen how the taste of 'fame' can drive someone to be rather unpleasant, has given me a much more 'whatever' attitude. It's sort of comforting when joining a new fandom to know what's going to happen next in its natural progression.

What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show?

There's a meme "I have a type," and XF definitely had that type, but it just took me a while to get there. I was away at college then working on the road when the show started, and wasn't home on Friday nights most of the year. My mother has always been a big sci-fi fan, so she actually was watching before me. I don't like scary things, and would leave the room if it was on when I'd visit her. I was home for Christmas when Christmas Carol/Emily aired and I remember standing tentatively just inside the room so I could flee if necessary, and watched Scully go through the wringer, and ranting, "What the hell is this? Why are they putting that poor woman through this!?" I also saw how the show was doing the big ship tease, and I was like, uh, I don't have time for this. Even by my 20's, I'd been done wrong by so many shows that I'd become bitter. But the first film trailers suggested they were actually going from UST to RST, so I figured I could give 2 hours of my time for that.  And yeah...but I was hooked, and WENT TO BLOCKBUSTER AND RENTED THE VHS TAPES TO CATCH UP....this interview is making me feel very old.

What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?

I've always been a shipper and have no shame in that, as I think forming and maintaining a relationship is the most conflict-ridden enterprise humans can attempt, and thus is the most challenging thing to write about. Like many fanfic writers, I'd 'told stories in my head' ever since I can remember about the characters from books, shows and movies. It was just a matter of then writing it down for the first time.

After I was sucked into the show and it was still the summer hiatus, I got on my first computer, dialed up that screeching modem, and went on Netscape to search for that fanfic I knew had to be out there from my Trek experience a decade ago. Like many people, after inhaling much of the delicious fics out there, I decided I can do that. I'm someone who's very methodical on my approach to something new, so I studied what worked/what didn't, the expected formatting, got a sense of the culture I was entering, acquired a critical beta reader, so when I actually submitted the first chapter to AXTC, I was calm and confident.

What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?

I watch from the sidelines, with a vague little smile on my lips.

Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?

Yes, I have. Battlestar Galactica had a lot of Philes, but it was still a big step away from the very organized fandom in X-Files. Plus, with so many characters, there could be lots of little groups focused on their favorites. Same in the Downton Abbey fandom. Just a different dynamic.

On the other end of the spectrum, one of my most popular fics is in the Silence of the Lambs fandom which I've never been involved with any other fans or their fandom, if it exists. It just sits out there on fanfiction.net and chugs along with the reads. My current fandom is The Doctor Blake Mysteries which is tiny but mighty--the saying is, we're six people and a shoelace. It's shown me that it's not the size, not the 'fame' possible, but the passion that makes a fandom.

Sadly, at least at this time, I don't think there will ever be an experience like The X-Files heyday. It was such a golden moment of the rise of internet and home computer use by the general public, a large generation of educated women having the time to participate in fandom, and there wasn't the amount of 'noise' that is distracting us all now. I'm so glad that you're doing this exercise to record our thoughts. We've already lost so many of the OG folks. My first beta, Janet Caires-Lesgold; Trixie, way too young; Shari, also too young; Brandon D Ray, leaving his family too soon; and many more.

Technically, some of this stuff can be taken as canon, since these are my own characters, XD

Some of the more serious stuff does show up in the actual story and Duality, but the funny/humorous ones are just one-off jokes for this meme (or stuff I might incorporate into a joke comic later)

Liene:

Headcanon A:  realistic-- She has PTSD from all the trauma she experienced (both at school, and from when she was experimented on by the unethical researchers.) *This is 100% canon and will be explored in both the actual story and Duality.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious-- Frustrated with her short height, she wears extremely high-heeled shoes one day. It goes about as well as expected. (AKA she keeps falling down all day until she gets fed up with it and ends up walking around barefoot.)

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends- Liene doesn't believe she is worthy of being loved after all her traumatic experiences. She thinks she is too broken, and too much of a headache for other people to deal with. She craves friendship and physical affection, but she pulls away from it for awhile because she thinks she's a huge burden on people. :( *This one is also canon.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.-- I really, really want her to punch Ivan Korovichenko for what he did to her and her friends. But she has not reached that level of aggression (and probably never will; she is the character least prone to physically lashing out), nor has she moved past her fear of him.

Liutas:

Headcanon A:  realistic-- Like Liene and Elts, she has PTSD from the traumatic events she experienced. However, unlike the other two, she's been dealing with it since the prologue of the story, since she saw her parents get murdered, and then was tortured and left for dead after witnessing said murder. *This is 100% canon.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious-- She and Tobiasz cosplay Team Rocket one year for Halloween (with Liu as Jessie and Tobi as James). They make Pru Wagner cosplay Meowth after she loses a bet to them. (Okay, now I really want to draw this; the image of it is hilarious, XD)

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends- Due to Ivan Korovichenko forcing her into a secret (and one-sided, on Ivan's part) relationship for a month, she hates kissing and most romantic physical affection. (Platonic affection is perfectly fine, for her). Liene and Elts do not know about this, [nor the rest of Liu's friends], nor does she ever want to tell them. (She's worried they'll find her weak for being manipulated into that situation. Of course they would never think that, but she just feels really gross about it and wants to push it out of her mind forever.) *Also canon,

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.-- Sometimes I feel like Liutas's eventual relationship with Paula Jacobs isn't healthy for Liu. Paula is a very difficult character to write/characterize, and her selfishness is definitely her worst quality. I almost feel like breaking them up would be the best for Liutas's mental state, in the long run.

Elts:

Headcanon A:  realistic-- She is ace and demiromantic. *100% canon

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious-- She sings Eurovision songs when she's in her dorm room alone. (She has a great voice, but the image of her singing something like 'Congratulations' is absolutely hilarious, XD)

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends- Out of her, Liutas, and Liene, Elts has the most self-loathing/self-hatred. (Especially towards not being able to stop Ivan Korovichenko from bludgeoning Liene's skull with a flashlight after he lost control of his anger--more than usual, I mean.) *Also canon.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.-- I wish Elts didn't freeze during the infamous flashlight scene, and stopped Ivan from knocking Liene unconscious/giving her a concussion. It was realistic that she did freeze up, but sometimes I wish I wrote her trying harder to stop it.
