Lecture 10: MONTEREY POP HIGHLIGHTS: Soul legend Otis Redding (1941-1967) also attracted a mass audience after his extraordinary performance at Monterey Pop in June 1967. Alas, months later, on December 10, 1967, he would die in a plane crash in Madison, Wisconsin. Here is his song, “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long (to Stop Now).” This magnificent performance, like so many other Monterey Pop performances, was featured in the late, great D.A. Pennebaker’s MONTEREY POP rockumentary, and this pristine clip is courtesy of the Criterion Collection print of the film.

Monti, who would later become a Disco sensation for his role as the DJ in Saturday Night Fever and his performance as Disco Tex (Disco Tex & His Sex-O-Lettes) was the hairdresser for Nena von Schlebrügge, Uma Thurman's mother, at her wedding with LSD guru Dr. Timothy Leary on December 12, 1964. He sings an interesting and amazing rendition of "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You" a the end of the film.
