was that milly alcock? oh no no, that was just stelle, a canon character from honkai star rail. they are twenty four years old, use she/they, and are aware that they are not actually from washington dc. too bad they can’t stray from this city for long.
how long has your character been here
like a week max not long at all she's still figuring herself out
what is your character’s job
uh at the moment none but in the future that's a good question. stelle really doesn't know what she's good at. she's like digging through the trash, and may just collect and sell scrap, but if any character's own a business and would be open to hiring her and being kind of patient as she figures it out i would definitely love some kind of plot like that.
where has your character been pulled from in their fandom
probably the end of the first quest we have though i have not actually finished it myself yet so i'll be updating her as i go. right now they last remember running from the guard but they'll be updated pretty regularly as i catch up
has any magic affected your character
nope!
any other info
there isn't a ton for me to say here for once because stelle really barely knows anything about herself
her only memory is a of a woman named kafka, and waking up in a space ship when it was under attack
from there they joined a group and helped fought, and discovered there had basically been a futuristic bomb shoved in their chest. while currently dormant it is like just still there
stelle has been traveling with a small group on a space train trying to help other worlds and then all of a sudden she was here?
honestly everything has been so new and odd to them that they aren't even sure this isn't where they're supposed to be. stelle is mostly just confused where her friends went.
so feral. not in a mean way, but stelle is constantly bombarded with impulsive thoughts that she frequently loses against. digging through the trash? she's doing it. hiding in a closet to surround herself in the smell of wood? absolutely. jumping out from said closet and scaring the shit out of some poor room service employee? no hesitation.
so not mean, but certainly out of pocket on the regular. needs to think for like three more seconds before just doing what they want but boy does that not happen often.
generally well meaning, but definitely not following any sort of strict moral code. can absolutely be pulled into some nonsense if you just convince her it'll be fun
i love her your honor please be her friend

10 Wedding Ceremony Catering Concepts To Appeal Your Guests In 2021
Some of it I assume the writer phrased somewhat too harshly actually. No one cares about the dress or the invitations? Yeah, you don’t must blow out your price range for the right costume, but you do need something that makes you're feeling good on your special day. People will notice in case your gown doesn’t suit you. I agree with Ellen – the purpose just isn't that this stuff aren’t ‘important’, it’s looking on the huge picture – is the wedding in regards to the ‘perfect day’ or celebrating your commitment with those you love. If you've a very limited finances you probably can still be inventive and have a wonderful wedding!
And honeslty how many people’s invites do you remember? I extra so remember the save the dates with peoples pics on them more than the actual invites. I simply need to remark after studying all of the adverse feedback to this text. The point is that a marriage isn't one thing to get incredibly stressed out about or spend $50,000! If somebody actually paid consideration and judged me for “capitalizing each word on my invitation” as one commenter said- I do NOT want you at my wedding ceremony. I honestly can't imagine the quantity of comments that basically say they go to weddings to evaluate every detail- and little question talk crap about their “friend” in a while for not spending sufficient cash.
Some of this stuff i consider are for the bride herself like the sort of dress she needs. Unique that appears great on me that i won’t see the bride of the next wedding ceremony i am going to carrying it or one thing just like it. But be honest in case you are selecting a daily plain strapless with a sash do you REALLY have to get the designer one when you probably can easily decide an nearly equivalent one from David’s Bridal for lots cheaper? Every wedding ceremony i’ve been to i’ve NEVER recognized who made their bride’s dress, i solely know whether or not she looked beautiful in it or like a stuffed sausage.
Making your day particular is what we're all about and you will find that our prices are reasonable too. Sporty sorts might consider a marriage on a basketball court or giant yoga studio. Create a sense of intimacy with decorations and gauzy drapes that section off the area.

Happy Taco Truck: Some Fine Things (Part 3)
Part 1 Part 2
This is the final installment, an early Christmas gift to my sis @awrestlinggirlwholoves80sbands! Thank you so much for your feedback, it means everything

Warnings: language, Axl is a brat, horny Izz, Slaxl takes a long time to marinate, Izzy is just too romantic
Notes: this is my first try at slash fiction, so be gentle. All credits to the songwriters, and the “Jose Cuervo” line is from the movie “DC Cab.” I would give just about everything to hear Izzy sing “Lodi”
“Can I help you?” your coworker asked.
You glanced over at him, tenderness unfurling in your heart. After Skyler took off with James from “Hetfield & Grohl’s” to work the barbecue circuit, you’d been up shit creek until Steven recommended a guy he knew, and a curly-haired, soft-spoken guy who for some undeterminable reason went by the moniker “Slash” had turned up to work the window.
It was the first time in your life you’d met an individual even shyer than yourself. Slash was easy-going and smart, and once you got to know him, incredibly funny, but inside his shell was where he was truly comfortable, and with the amount of assholes who demanded the impossible being the brunt of your customers, you wondered if he was going to last.
“Yeah, gimme a chicken taco.” Speaking of assholes, here was Axl placing his usual order. He had been really taking advantage of the discount you offered him, turning up several times a day to collect his free meals. Izzy mentioned he’d been finding antacids stashed in the ice cream truck.
The heat inside the truck forced Slash to pull his gorgeous curls back in a ponytail, and his exposed eyes fell downwards. “Sure. I’ll have that right out,” he said in his quiet voice, then closed the hatch.
You dumped chicken on the flattop. “Slash, hon, we can’t shut the window until we’re closed,” you gently reminded him, moving the seasoned meat around.
“I-I can’t talk to him,” he whispered, his soft eyes full of fear.
“Why not? I mean, yeah, he can be a jerk sometimes, but-”, and it was at that moment you caught it. You recognized that same desperate look. You’d worn it yourself a little while ago, when you had been too shy to chat up Izzy. How frightened you’d been of embarrassing yourself, only to find out that Izz lit up every time he looked at you, and was now completely incapable of keeping his wandering hands to himself.
“Oh, Slash,” you murmured, handing him the taco. His hands were shaking too bad to add the crema, so you did it yourself, and he opened the hatch to an irate Axl.
“Here-here you go,” he said, and you hoped you were the only one who heard the waver in his voice.
“The hell’s wrong with you! You can’t even talk to your customers?!” Axl’s face was nearly as red as his hair as he screamed at Slash.
Slash’s mouth flew open in hurt, and you stepped up to the window. “Axl, that was my fault. I was showing Slash how to add the special sauce. And that is a closely guarded secret,” you lied. There were some days you really wanted to punch him in the mouth. “And you will not speak to my assistant like that ever again. You understand?”
Axl looked at you, then Slash. “Hey, man, I’m sorry,” he said, and you nearly tumbled out the window in surprise. Axl raised hell with everybody and everything, but you’d never heard him apologize before.
“S’okay,” Slash said, barely audible, looking down, and you wanted to put your arms around him and give him a comforting squeeze.
Axl opened his mouth to say something, then stuffed his taco in it and walked away.
“Why he took a job in customer service is beyond me,” you muttered, then patted Slash on the back. “I’ve never heard him tell anyone he was sorry. You must be special,” and Slash’s face lit up as he smiled.
And you knew you had a problem on your hands.
“Yoo hoo? Where’s my beloved? I got a bottle of Jose Cuervo and I brought my lucky rubber,” Izzy announced, climbing aboard your truck.
“I’m out here, Izz,” you called, slamming the lid down on the trash can.
He walked into your view and let out a loud whistle. “Have I told you you get more beautiful every day?” he asked, pulling you to him for a kiss.
“Mmmm, hi, handsome,” you said against his mouth. “You’re just the person I wanted to see.”
“And you’re just the person I wanted to see naked.”
“Izz!” you scolded. “I actually need your help with something.”
“I can help you do that. Over and over again.”
You playfully swatted him. “It’s about Slash.”
Izzy’s face grew serious. “He didn’t quit, did he? I mean, I can fill in for him again, but I’d need to lay down for like a week afterward.”
You shook your head. “No, he didn’t quit.” That week Izzy subbed at the Happy Taco window had left him scarred for life. “He, uh, he has a crush.”
Izzy furrowed his eyebrows.
“On Axl.”
He blinked. “And?”
“And I thought maybe you could help me play matchmaker.”
Izzy turned and pounded his head against the side of the truck.
“Honey,” you pleaded, “please. He’s so shy I don’t think he has any idea how to approach him.”
“Babe, even if I wanted to do this, and I don’t, Axl has been acting so fucking weird lately there’s no way I could talk to him.”
“Weird? What’s he doing?”
“Well, he comes over here for tacos all the time now, then when comes back, he plays all of his Elton John tapes at full blast. Then he cleans the truck from top to bottom. He’s even nice to the customers now.”
“But he came over here and yelled at Slash!”
His eyes met yours. “What did Slash do to him?”
“He didn’t talk to him.”
Izzy was quiet for a moment. “Y/N, I don’t think he’s coming over here for just tacos, although they are excellent.”
“See, they need our help.”
Izzy closed his eyes and beat his head against the truck again.
“They just need a little nudge in the right direction.”
He wearily looked at you, and you put your hand on his cheek. “Fine,” he rasped. “Whatever. But right now, I need to go in the right direction, and that direction is horizontal with you on top of me.”
“Slash, are you busy tonight?”
You honestly had no idea what Slash did on his nights off. As soon as you closed the truck, he exchanged pleasantries with Izzy and hopped on his bike and pedaled away. When you’d offered him an invitation to stay and meet the rest of the Circle, he mumbled something about feeding a snake and fled.
Tonight, you hoped he would have a change of heart. After hours, you and Izzy usually got up to activities that did not require any participants, but he had talked Axl into a jam session, bringing along two guitars as well as a tambourine.
“I-I don’t have any plans,” he said quietly, gazing longingly out the window. It was nearly time for Axl to fetch his dinner taco.
“There’s a jam over at the Frozen Delights truck after they close.”
Slash lit up, grinning wider than you had ever seen him, then his face fell. “I didn’t bring my guitar.”
“Izzy brought two. He’d like to hear you play.” That was almost a lie. Izzy wasn’t all that keen on a jam, preferring the two of you spending time alone, but when you whispered on his neck you’d make it up to him, his enthusiasm level picked up.
To your surprise, Slash’s cheeks flushed. “I’d love to come,” then he stood up a little straighter and you saw Axl strutting up to the window.
“Hey, Slash,” he greeted him, and you stepped back into the shadows to give them a semblance of privacy.
“Hi.”
“Hey, you wanna come over tonight and play music with me and Izz? He’s got an extra guitar.”
Slash beamed at him, then lowered his eyes. “Sure. So-sounds good.”
Axl smiled back, and you about fell over at the sight. Too bad he didn’t do it more often, he was quite attractive when he stopped scowling. He began to walk away, then backtracked. “Hey,” he squinted up, “do you like barbecue?”
Slash blinked, then replied, “I love barbecue.”
Axl’s smile got even bigger. “I’ll have some when you get there.”
After he left, Slash looked over at you with his mouth agape.
“Well, it sounds like you have a date,” you chuckled at him. “Good thing he’s provided dinner.”
He tilted his head. “Why?”
“I was going to suggest you bring over one of those homewrecker corn dogs and eat it in front of him,” you cackled. “Izzy’s eyes nearly left his head when I did that.”
“Oh shit,” Slash breathed, laughing with you, then his eyes turned pleading. “You’ll be there, won’t you, you and Izz? You won’t leave me alone?”
Well, that had been the plan. “Uhhh, sure, Slash. We won’t leave you.”
After you locked up, you nearly had to drag a primping Slash down to the Frozen Delights truck, pecking Izzy on the lips when you arrived. Axl had taken off to get dinner, so the three of you sat down and opened up beers while you awaited his return.
You watched Slash’s leg nervously bounce up and down, then Axl stood in front of him and handed him a takeout container.
“I didn’t know what you liked so I got you a sample platter,” he said, and you swore you heard a note of shyness in his voice.
Izzy cleared his throat, and Axl all but flung your containers at the two of you. “Yeah, I got you the same,” he mumbled, jerking his lawn chair closer to Slash’s.
The four of you ate in silence, you silently thanking Kelly for his prowess with pork, working the meat off a rib and catching an ornery smile from Izzy.
Axl just picked at his platter, moving around his coleslaw and half heartedly munching on his brisket. His eyes never left Slash, who looked down and gnawed on a rib.
Their awkwardness made you bite back a wince, then you snuck a glance at Izzy, who stabbed his pulled pork wearing expression that looked like he was in acute intestinal distress. His eyes met yours, then he mouthed, “Kill me.”
“So, uh, Slash, how long have you played guitar?” you asked, dipping a slice of brisket into Kelly’s heavenly sauce.
He pulled on his beer. “A few years.”
Izzy sat his container down and wiped his hands and face with a napkin. “I’m ready to play if you are,” he barked, swiftly flicking open his guitar case.
Slash blinked, swallowing his pulled pork. “Sure,” he said, wiping his hands and carefully picking Izzy’s other guitar up.
Izzy began the opening notes of “Midnight Rider,” Slash chiming in after a few bars, then Axl and Izzy began singing, “I’ve got to run to keep from hiding,” and you dropped a naked rib bone in shock.
They sounded incredible.
You watched them in awe, then Izzy nodded at you, and you began singing with them. You’d actually done this before, sitting in with Izzy while he played guitar and Axl sang, but Slash was like the key that unlocked their greatness.
Axl and Slash exchanged grins, looking into each other’s eyes, then, wearing a happy smile, Izzy started singing one of his favorites, “Lodi.”
Slash strummed along, but Axl didn’t sing. Instead, he watched Slash play, his fingers working up and down the neck of the guitar, his silver rings glinting in the moonlight, and a soft smile played on his lips.
He took a sip of beer when they finished, then said, “I have a song I’d like to sing.”
He moved closer to Slash, then pushed his curls out of his eyes and sang,
“Desperado
Why don’t you come to your senses
You’ve been out ridin fences for so long now”
Slash looked down, setting Izzy’s guitar in its case, then Axl tipped his chin up and continued,
“Oh, you’re a hard one
But I know that you got your reasons
These things that are pleasing you
Can hurt you somehow
Izzy silently packed away his guitar, then jerked his head towards Helen the Happy Taco truck. You followed him, turning around to see Axl whisper,
“You better let somebody love you
Before it’s too late”
and press a kiss to Slash’s lips, then Slash put his arms around Axl’s neck and returned it.
“Thank God,” Izzy muttered. “I’d rather fuck a bee’s nest than tag along on one of their dates again.”

UNITY CAUCUS STATEMENT ON MAYOR KENNEY’S BUDGET ADDRESS
Unity Caucus is a group of rank-and-file City workers.*
(PHILADELPHIA, PA) -- At huge risk to ourselves and our families, city workers have been working tirelessly on the frontlines through the pandemic picking up trash, running access centers for students, fixing streets, and keeping health centers running.
We see at work everyday, the city budget has been inadequate for years. Our schools, our libraries, and our parks are understaffed and underfunded. Many essential city departments, like sanitation, are so understaffed with workers so underpaid that they need a constant stream of overtime to get the work done and make a living wage.
Mayor Kenney’s budget proposal leaves last year’s dramatic pandemic cuts in place. 2020’s pandemic cuts have devastated public services, while city residents need city services more than ever to get back on their feet.
At the Free Library, the Mayor’s budget leaves $3.6 million dollars of cuts in place from before the pandemic, and does not restore full 6 day a week service. At Parks & Rec, the Mayor’s budget cuts $2.9 million from pre-pandemic levels. Since even before the pandemic, many rec centers are physically unsafe and staffed by 1 person. In the Streets department, where sanitation workers worked around the clock and contracted Covid at alarming rates, Mayor Kenney cut the budget $11.3 million.
Last summer 454 workers across the city were laid off, nearly half of those workers from the library alone. Most were women. Most were people of color. Most were the lowest paid, temporary workers who get let go and rehired every year. They never have union representation, health insurance, or a permanent year-round job.
These layoffs were unnecessary and harmful, and those workers must be rehired to permanent positions as city services are rebuilt. The budget should not be balanced on the backs of working families, so we are also happy to see the wage tax reduced. But without increasing revenue from other sources this budget proposal simply postpones an inevitable budget gap, and the layoffs and service cuts that will come with it.
We believe that now is the time to seek progressive revenue sources that will provide city funding over the next decades--not just this year. Mayor Kenney said in his address today that we can’t tax the rich, but we know that isn’t true. We can tax the ultra-rich and require large corporations and nonprofits to pay their fair share. Yes, we can do this, even with the PA uniformity clause.
Even during the pandemic, large corporations have made massive profits, like Comcast’s $10.5 billion in 2020 alone.
Our city residents and workers need a Big Business Tax (aka Gross Receipts Tax) on these large corporations that pay a tax rate of less than 1%.
It’s time for large nonprofits like UPenn, Drexel, and Jefferson to pay their fair share. These institutions can pay taxes on the income from their massive endowments, and they can contribute PILOTS, as we know they are exempt.
We need to tax the massive wealth of local billionaires like Brandywine CEO Jerry Sweeney by levying an estate tax on the ultra wealthy and taxing capital gains like million dollar investment winnings instead.
We must also redirect funds away from the police department, toward city departments that promote public safety and welfare. The police department’s budget would serve our city better if it went towards public health, infrastructure, homelessness services, and schools, instead of things like tax-payer funded, multi-million dollar settlements.
Today, we stand in solidarity with community members and union and non-union workers across the city to call on the mayor and city council to create a budget that works for all Philadelpians, by taxing the extreme wealth that exists in Philadelphia and investing it in our communities--not incarceration.
________________________________________________________________
*Unity is a caucus of AFSCME DC 33, DC 47, and non-rep, non-management employees who are building solidarity between rank-and-file workers across job classes, departments, locals, and district councils, in order to make AFSCME stronger.
We are a caucus of, by, and for rank-and-file workers. We do not claim to speak on behalf of the union or its elected leadership. We are acting on our right to speak up on behalf of ourselves, to bring attention to our working conditions, to organize for mutual aid and protection, and to voice our aspirations about our jobs, our city, and our future.
Unity's mission is to increase democracy, transparency, solidarity, public service, dignified work, and collective power in our union: any rank-and-file City worker or member of our union who agrees with our program may join us.

Burned out by the pandemic, 3 in 10 health-care workers consider leaving the profession
(Washington Post) It’s been months since Justin Meschler, 48, practiced medicine. And he wonders if he ever will again. He quit his job as an anesthesiologist during the pandemic last spring when fear began seeping into every part of his life. And what began as a few months off has now turned into something much longer. “I feel guilty for leaving. I think about the others who stayed on. I think about the patients I could have helped. I feel like I abandoned them,” Meschler said. “But mostly, I feel relieved.” A year into the pandemic, many others are joining Meschler at the door—an exodus fueled by burnout, trauma and disillusionment. According to a Washington Post-Kaiser Family Foundation poll, roughly 3 in 10 health-care workers have weighed leaving their profession. More than half are burned out. And about 6 in 10 say stress from the pandemic has harmed their mental health. Many traced their disillusionment to how the pandemic exposed and magnified the broken parts of America’s health-care system. “You look at staffing, preparedness, what the priorities were for many hospitals during the crisis, and it’s clear the industry is driven by profits rather than well-being of patients or health workers,” Meschler said from his home in Louisville, Colo. “It makes you question the whole system.”
House Democrats pass D.C. statehood, launching bill into uncharted territory
(Washington Post) For the second time in history, the House passed legislation Thursday to make the District of Columbia the nation’s 51st state, bolstering momentum for a once-illusory goal that has become a pivotal tenet of the Democratic Party’s voting rights platform. The bill now heads to the Senate. But the political odds remain formidable. Republicans, who hold 50 seats, have branded the bill as a Democratic power grab because it would create two Senate seats for the deep-blue city. Not even all Senate Democrats have backed the bill as the clock ticks toward the 2022 midterm election. Voting rights groups have described a city of second-class citizens, a plurality of whom are Black, living in the nation’s capital without any say in the nation’s laws.
Bringing Up Baby, And Charging Them For It
(NPR) Foster care is a public service that federal law and all 50 state laws require the government to pay for. Foster care agencies are funded through a web of federal and state grants and subsidies, which, again, taxpayers are supposed to pay for. 10% of children in the US foster care system are entitled to Social Security (SS) benefits, either because their parents have died or because they have a physical or mental disability that would leave them in poverty without financial help. This money—typically more than $700 per month—is considered the children’s property under federal law. Congress never intended that the SS benefits owed these children would be a funding stream for their foster care services. The Marshall Project teamed up with NPR to expose how foster care agencies in at least 36 states and Washington, DC have been appropriating money owed to children in foster care to pay for the very services the government is supposed to provide with taxpayer dollars. Agencies do it by combing through their case files to find kids entitled to these benefits, then applying to SS to become each child’s financial representative, a process permitted by federal regulations. Once approved, the agencies take the money, almost always without notifying the children, their loved ones, or their lawyers. Child Trends research shows that state foster care agencies collected more than $165 million from foster children in 2018 alone. And SS data indicates the number is likely much higher.
Biden to recognize Armenian genocide
(Foreign Policy) According to multiple reports, U.S. President Joe Biden is to break a long-standing taboo this Saturday by officially recognizing the massacre of 1 million ethnic Armenian by the Ottoman Empire as a genocide. Biden had commemorated the Armenian genocide as a presidential candidate last year, but Saturday’s proclamation would make him the first sitting president to do so. The announcement is certain to anger NATO ally Turkey, which disputes the historical record and the use of the term.
Mexican mobile data law
(Foreign Policy) On Tuesday, a judge blocked part of a new Mexican law that requires cellphone users to submit biometric data, such as fingerprints and eye scans. The measure had drawn pushback from privacy and consumer safety advocates. The judge wrote there was no causal relationship between such data gathering and better investigations of crimes—one official justification for the new law. It will now face further examination in the courts.
Human excrement ‘increasingly serious problem’ as Britain opens up but many bathrooms don’t
(Washington Post) With Britain slowly easing its way out of its third nationwide lockdown, people across the country are enjoying a return to a sense of normalcy. Shops and gyms have reopened and parks are once again heaving with groups of up to six people—for many, it’s a welcome step forward and a joy to be back socializing outdoors. But what happens when nature calls? The issue of where to relieve oneself in a world where so many facilities have been shut in recent months has long been a concern in Britain. Many public bathrooms, in particular, were closed during the various lockdowns and remain unavailable. Across the country, police patrols have been stepped up in a bid to deter people from urinating in bushes, on beaches and on private allotments. The problem isn’t just in parks, with towns and cities complaining that people spending time outdoors had no choice but to defecate in the street—much to the horror of local residents who said the odor was so bad on certain streets they were unable to open their windows and had to clean up after others with bleach and water. The lack of facilities has also meant people were unable to wash their hands—an instruction the government has repeatedly used in its messaging to curb the spread of infections over the past year.
Many in Western Europe and U.S. Want Economic Changes as Pandemic Continues
(Pew Research Center) The coronavirus outbreak has caused, among other things, a debate around how to best rebuild national economies ravaged by the pandemic. Across the United States, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, significant shares believe their economic system needs either major changes or a complete overhaul, according to a Pew Research Center survey conducted in the late fall of 2020. Few in the four countries say their economy does not need any changes. The desire for change is strongest in France, where seven-in-ten believe the economic system in their country needs either major changes or to be completely reformed. Half share this view in the U.S., UK and Germany, while around four-in-ten in these three nations say minor changes are warranted. Few would opt for no adjustments to the economic system, ranging from 3% in France to 12% in the U.S. Of the five policies tested, the idea of government-sponsored job and skills training for workers garners the highest shares. Sizable shares in these countries also believe it is very important for their government to implement policies targeted at helping those struggling financially, building more public housing, and increasing government benefits to the poor, all three of which are of high import for around four-in-ten or more in each country.
Russia orders troops back to base after buildup near Ukraine
(Reuters) Russia announced on Thursday it was ordering troops back to base from the area near the border with Ukraine, apparently calling an end to a buildup of tens of thousands of soldiers that had alarmed the West. A confirmed pullout of the troops brought in on top of the permanent contingent will likely be welcomed by Western countries that had been expressing alarm at the prospect of further Russian intervention in eastern Ukraine. Russian-backed separatists have been fighting the Ukrainian government in the region since 2014. Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said he had ordered troops involved in exercises to return to their bases by May 1, as they had completed what he called an “inspection” in the border area.
US troops in Afghanistan begin packing gear in pullout prep
(AP) The U.S. military has begun shipping equipment and winding down contracts with local service providers ahead of the May 1 start of the final phase of its military pullout from Afghanistan, a U.S. Defense Department official said Thursday. The pullout under U.S. President Joe Biden marks the end of America’s longest war after a 20-year military engagement. Currently, some 2,500 U.S. soldiers and about 7,000 allied forces are still in Afghanistan. In February last year, the U.S. military began closing its smaller bases. In mid-April, the Biden administration announced that the final phase of the withdrawal would begin May 1 and be completed before Sept. 11. Since then, the military has been shipping equipment and winding down local contracts for services such as trash pickup and maintenance work, the U.S. official told The Associated Press. The Taliban, meanwhile, were non-committal when asked by the AP whether the insurgents would attack departing U.S. and NATO troops. “It’s too early for these issues, nothing can be said about the future,” said Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem.
Indian coronavirus cases surge as health system staggers
(Reuters) India reported the world’s highest daily tally of coronavirus infections for a second day on Friday, surpassing 330,000 new cases, as it struggles with a health system overwhelmed by patients and plagued by accidents. Deaths in the past 24 hours also jumped to a record 2,263, the health ministry said, while officials across northern and western India, including the capital, New Delhi, warned most hospitals were full and running out of oxygen. The surge in cases came as a fire in a hospital in a suburb of Mumbai treating COVID-19 patients killed 13 people, the latest accident to hit a facility crowded with virus sufferers.
Violence in Jerusalem
(Foreign Policy) Dozens were injured in Jerusalem on Thursday night as anti-Arab protests led by far-right Jewish activists turned violent. The Palestinian Red Crescent reported 105 people injured in the clashes as Haaretz reported more than 30 were arrests. The violence follows a week of assaults on Arab Israelis and Palestinians by Jewish Israeli residents. Tensions rose between the communities last week after videos of Palestinians assaulting Jews were posted on TikTok.
Crew Of ‘Ever Given’ Could Be Stuck On The Big Boat For Years
(Jalopnik) The news cycle may have moved on from the Ever Given, but the Ever Given still hasn’t moved on from its holding spot in the Great Bitter Lake in the middle of the Suez Canal after almost a month. The crew still stuck on the ship is very concerned about this, as there seems to be no sign that an agreement will be reached between Egypt and the Ever Given’s owners any time soon. Until there is an agreement in place, the crew is stuck there, and they could be for years. Apparently, it isn’t unusual for crew members to get trapped on ships caught in the middle of international shipping disputes. The Guardian details the fate of one sailor who has been the lone guardian of a ship for the last two years in the Gulf of Suez only 50 miles south of where the Ever Given has been held since it was freed back in March. He’s only allowed off the ship for two hour intervals to get food and water. The crew is stuck in the middle of a legal battle between the Suez Canal Authority, which is basically a stand-in for the Egyptian government, the owners of the Ever Given, Japanese company Shoei Kisen Kaisha Ltd and the operators of the ship, a German company called Bernhard Schulte. The SCA is demanding $916 million in damages due to the blockage while Shoei Kisen disputes those charges. Until the company pays up, the government of Egypt is holding on to the ship. The 26 crew members are reportedly in good spirits, but apprehensive according to representatives from the National Union of Seafarers of India, the trade union representing the Ever Given’s crew.

Food: The quality of the food that I use to cook dinner is regulated by the FDA, a state agency. If I were to eat out the level of sanitation would be regulated by the Health Department, a state agency. The capacity allowed in this restaurant, its eligibility to serve food and alcohol, and its service hours are decided and enforced by ABRA, another state agency.
People: When I ride the metro it's conductors and operators are subjugated to the rules and regulations put in place by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, a government agency that decides these workers incomes, allotted breaks, uniforms, work schedule, and expected work attitude. Due to the pandemic I do not encounter metro workers as often as I did in the past but they have successfully gotten me to the city for many years now and given me the opportunity to access a minimum wage of 15 dollars an hour as opposed to the 11 dollars an hour offered in Maryland. These wages are decided by the U.S Department of Labor, another government agency.
Transportation: When I take a trip to the store I drive on roads that are constructed and kept up by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association. I abide by traffic laws created by elected officials at the state level. These laws are enforced by police officers employed by the Metropolitan Police Department. I do not volatile these rules because I would be at risk of being sent to jail or the D.C Department of Corrections yet another state agency.
Environmental: When I dispose of trash in my apartment building it is collected by the Department of Public works that deals with sanitation in apartments and single family homes within D.C. How the Department of Public Works handles waste is regulated by the Waste EPA who decides how to deal with certain hazardous waste. My neighborhood is landscaped by the Department of Energy & Environment that focuses on beautification efforts within the city with the Environmental Protection Agency deciding what plants and pesticides are suitable and safe to use. As I walk through my neighborhood, most areas provide sidewalks for pedestrian traffic built by the District Department of Transportation.
Infrastructure: The water I use is regulated by the EPA and the Safe Drinking Water act. The electricity that powers the lights and electronics is controlled by the Federal Agency Regulatory Commission that looks over the sales and distribution of electricity. When I visit my partners family I will fly on an airplane with safety regulations and pilot guidelines enforced by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Public Agencies: When the pandemic began I lost my job in public education and had to go to the Maryland Department of Labor website to apply for unemployment. To renew my permit I drove to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Association that deals with the applications for insurance, licenses, and license plates. When I lost my birth certificate I had to visit The DC Health Vital Records Division that helps DC residents obtain copies of vital documentation.
Social Life: When I turned 21 the rights available to me changed as well. I was able to drink alcohol, a decision that was influenced by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, a government organization that studies the risks and benefits of alcohol.
Misc: During this pandemic I used the United States Postal Service to receive and mail by ballot. I also watched in the public sphere debates about the United States Census Bureau, and whether or not its deadline should be extended due to the pandemic. I also saw workers during the pandemic reach out to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Center for Disease and Control, and the United States Department of Human and Health Services over the unsafe work conditions they were experiencing.

Though media reports of the protests have dwindled, organized demonstrations for racial justice are still underway.
By Fabiola Cineas
on July 16, 2020 8:30 am
In the weeks following the police killing of George Floyd, millions of Americans marched in the streets. Many had never attended a protest before, and some lived in historically conservative towns. At the peak of the protests — around June 6, according to publicly collected data from the Crowd Counting Consortium — people across all 50 states and dozens of cities around the world had participated in demonstrations that called for racial justice and an end to police violence.
But with the protests came a nonstop news cycle that seemed to fixate on burning cars and buildings, and clashes between police officers and protesters. As long as there were riots and looting, television news helicopters descended upon their respective cities, with organizers lamenting online that the media wasn’t interested in stories beyond those of broken windows, pepper spray, and vandalized storefronts.
And now, almost two months after the first protests erupted, national news cameras have fled, which makes it hard for the general public to recognize that protests are still going strong in cities and towns across America.
In Louisville, hundreds of protesters continue in their mission to bring to justice the police officers involved in Breonna Taylor’s death. Protesters have engaged in a number of large-scale public actions, from converging on the steps of the state’s capitol building to disrupting a mayoral press conference and hosting “blackout” marches.
On Tuesday, which marked day 48 of protests in the city, activists traveled to the home of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron, where they sat on his lawn and demanded he bring criminal charges against the officers. More than 100 people were reportedly detained at the demonstration for trespassing, according to organizer Tamika D. Mallory, co-founder of the social justice organization Until Freedom. Even Wanda Cooper-Jones, the mother of Ahmaud Arbery, traveled to Louisville to advocate on Taylor’s behalf. (She also spoke to local reporter Senait Gebregiorgis while she was there.)
The momentum is similar in other cities across the country, such as Minneapolis and New York, where multiple demonstrations happen every day. However, mainstream news stories about the protests seem to only emerge now in the event of isolated violence (including multiple instances of suspected or avowed white nationalistsrunning their vehicles into protesters) or protester clashes (like the recent spat between “Blue Lives Matter” protesters and counterprotesters in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn).
Local activists say the waning media attention is expected, but the work must continue. “We are in the biggest social movement this country has ever seen,” said activist Oluchi Omeoga, co-founder of the Black liberation nonprofit Black Visions Collective based in Minnesota. “When we say this is what will be written in the history books, it’s not an exaggeration. The folks calling for change in this moment are the folks who are going to be on the right side of history.”
The early news cycle’s focus on violence and destruction
Early news reports of the protests focused heavily on images of fires, overturned vehicles, and elevated scenes that distorted what was really taking place on the ground, with some pointing out that coverage seemed to exploit Black pain and violence.
On June 1, the front page of the New York Times read, “Twin crises and surging anger convulse U.S.” above a photo of protesters with their hands in the air and another showing police dressed in riot gear in a cloud of smoke. The same day, the Washington Post published an image of Minneapolis protesters crying and hugging one another after a truck ran through the crowd, with its own front-page headline reading, “U.S. at a precipice as demonstrations intensify.” (The bottom two images depict demonstrators at protests in Kansas City, Missouri, and Washington, DC.) And a San Francisco Chronicle headline on May 31 read “Riots, shooting rock Oakland” above an image of a protester standing with a fist raised in front of a dumpster fire.
The early coverage seemed “breathless,” Kanisha Bond, assistant professor of political science at Binghamton University, told Vox. “But that is not an unfamiliar tone when it comes to media coverage, specifically of urban uprisings involving both violent and nonviolent protest activity, and particularly when people who have been historically excluded from the traditional centers of American power are engaged in any sort of unrest.”
This was seen in the media coverage of the 2014 protests in Ferguson, Missouri, following the police shooting of Michael Brown. A Race Forward analysis found that news reports at the time largely lacked context explaining the “patterns of racially skewed police violence” that sparked the protests, with some not even mentioning the word “race” at all, Vox reported in 2015. Race Forward research director Dominique Apollon, who authored the study, told Vox that part of his advice to journalists was to “not take police accounts at face value.”
As Morgan State University politics and journalism professor Jason Johnson wrote for Vox in May, news coverage of uprisings often fails to show the full scale of protest activity — just because a few trash cans are on fire in one location doesn’t mean the entire city is on fire. Moreover, news reports of the Floyd protests didn’t always cover the cause of much of the violence: the police themselves. In many instances caught on camera, police used inordinate force against protesters who were silently marching or otherwise engaged in a peaceful group demonstration.
“Much of the damage attributed to protesters is often the result of police action or inaction in the face of lawful public behavior,” Johnson wrote. “Sometimes buried at the end of post-protest reports by local authorities is the fact that police munitions often start fires at protests, but this is seldom reported by the press, and there have been surprisingly few protesters arrested for arson relative to the fires that erupted during the unrest.”
Johnson also noted that news reports didn’t do much to highlight the presence of “run-of-the-mill opportunistic criminals” who seized on the moment to raid local businesses. For example, the media didn’t distinguish these actors from the protesters who, in a targeted effort, burned down the Third Police Precinct in Minneapolis, which was “a specific act of revolt.” The focus on damaged property over lost lives illustrated the media’s “misplaced priorities,” Johnson wrote.
Now, nearly two months after the first protests, a quick scan of the front pages of newspapers and digital media outlets would likely have one believe that the protests have altogether stopped. While they have surely shrunk in number and size, the social media accounts of activists and organizers continue to show compelling images of daily demonstrations.
In the past two weeks, there have been demonstrations in Sartell, Minnesota, and Keystone, South Dakota. Protests also carry on in Philadelphia, Houston, and Washington, DC. Meanwhile, in New York, the Instagram account JusticeforGeorgeNYC lists a collection of daily rallies, marches, protests, and vigils for Black people who have lost their lives to police brutality. On Wednesday, July 15, there are nearly a dozen events planned across Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan — from 8 in the morning to just before sunset.
News coverage can both help and hinder ongoing demonstrations
According to activists, the lack of coverage both hurts and helps protest movements as they continue through the summer.
On one hand, the absence of widespread protest coverage creates a false sense that the demonstrations have largely come to an end. “Some people do get their political cues from what makes its way into the general public discourse, which is largely shaped by what’s in the news, so media blackouts or withdrawals can give them the impression that either the ‘newsworthy part’ of the protests has expired or that there are simply no more events to be covered,” Bond told Vox.
The importance of protests as a tool for shifting public opinion is already evident in national polls. Monmouth University found at the end of May that 76 percent of Americans believe that racism is a big problem now, up from 51 percent in 2015. Other polls show that more people support the defunding of police than ever before. A June poll from the research firm PerryUndem found that 72 percent of respondents supported reallocating funds away from police and to other services like health care.
As political scientist Megan Ming Francis told Vox last month, systemic change begins with a shift in public opinion that’s brought about through protest. “The history of protest in this country is that when there’s more people, politicians pay attention,” she said. “If you want legal change, if you want political change, then it means you need to, at the same time or before, shift public opinion. That is crucial.”
On the other hand, some activists believe the constant presence of news cameras could hamper progress. If activists are constantly under the gaze and watch of the state, this could invite more violence on protesters and open up the opportunity for derailment.
“When the mainstream media steps away, we see even more clearly the vital function that independent media — including social media livestreamers — plays in providing a comprehensive and well-rounded accounting of protest and social mobilizations,” Bond told Vox. “The ubiquity of social media might attenuate any negative effects from a lack of media coverage — but how much is likely heavily determined by what sorts of information you allow across your online boundaries and within your social network.”
The most recent protest headlines at mainstream outlets — including the New York Times’s “Drivers Are Hitting Protesters as Memes of Car Attacks Spread” and USA Today’s “‘I would be very careful in the middle of the street’: Drivers have hit protesters 66 times since May 27” — focus on violence or arrests. Then there is CBS’s “87 people charged with felonies after Breonna Taylor protest at attorney general’s house” following Tuesday’s events, framed around protesters trespassing on an elected official’s property. When news outlets cherry-pick moments of violence to cover or criminalize protesters, they are choosing drama and sensationalism over the larger narrative — that the biggest anti-racism movement in a generation is still happening in the US.
“It comes down to what is considered newsworthy, which is often action, large numbers, and apparent mayhem,” Bond told Vox. “Burning buildings, smashing glass, and bleeding people are often visually riveting and can add a sense of vicarious danger and unpredictability, while direct actions like sit-ins, public education sessions, street parties, and/or meal distributions don’t offer people that sense of ‘ooh, what’s going to happen next’ the way that other actions might.”
The fight for justice lives on
Activists recognize how much has changed in public opinion since the first Floyd protests — and that’s why they haven’t stopped organizing. According to Omeoga, protests have taken place every day in Minneapolis since Floyd’s fatal arrest. Omeoga told Vox that part of what’s been missing in the coverage that has existed is expanding what we mean when we say “protest” or “public demonstration” to fully capture how people are mobilizing.
“The occupation of ‘George Floyd Ave,’ the place where he was murdered, is an act of resilience or a protest. We have been occupying that space every day since George Floyd was lynched. Folks are protesting for change in the simplest terms,” Omeoga said. “Folks are protesting for Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, Riah Milton, and Dominique Fells. Folks are protesting against police brutality and state-sanctioned violence and for interpersonal violence against Black trans women. Folks are out protesting for Black lives.”
According to Omeoga, the media largely focused coverage on the peak of the protests because “that’s what they think people are interested in,” she said. “We have been conditioned under this capitalist society to only find value in things for very short, transactional periods of time. The media affirms that in the ways they show what is worthy of news and what isn’t.” For Omeoga, left-friendly platforms like Democracy Now and Unicorn Riot are alternative media outlets that can help people stay up to date.
Ashton P. Woods, an organizer with Black Lives Matter Houston, recognizes that while coverage may now only extend to protests that feature celebrities or to protests where politicians are present, he can’t get comfortable and rely on politicians to do the work. “We have a responsibility to protect what we have secured for ourselves and dismantle white supremacy,” Woods told Vox.
That work, he said, doesn’t mean having to show up in the streets. With the number of coronavirus cases surging across the country and its disproportionate impact on Black, Latinx, and Native American communities, Woods acknowledges that people have to mind their health and the health of friends and family and community members. The work can take place in online seminars and gatherings that educate people who are new to the movement. For Woods, in Houston, it also includes showing up to courts and to city hall to pressure Texas lawmakers to sign legislation that tackles systemic racism. And moving forward, he said, protests must continue to create safe spaces for all Black lives, including women and trans, queer, and nonbinary people.
“There’s been an erasure of what we are really protesting for, like the Black LGBTQ community or the Black immigrants — all Black lives matter,” Woods told Vox. “We’ve been doing this anti-racism work since before Trump got into office. We’ve been planning, coordinating, and doing the type of work that doesn’t get on the news for a long time.”
The lack of attention and accountability by lawmakers means protesters have to keep elevating their message, whether in the streets or online, he said.

I have a list of ~900 albums from 2019 that I still want to eventually listen to / review [IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT ALERT]
For this project (already 125+ releases deep), which is just impossibly daunting and makes me head hurt. IDK how to streamline this process or is any “critic” out there really listening to “all” the good music? It’s impossible I guess... BUT needless to say, these have made this list from an even larger pool of music that I either listened to briefly and immediately dismissed or (gasp!) never even came across my radar (radar = many many music blogs I follow via RSS).

If regular trash removal in Washington D.C. isn’t offered by your current neighborhood, apartment complex, or business building, finding a company that can provide this service can really be difficult. All-Purpose Clean Up meets the needs of small businesses, multi-unit housing developments, and residential households by providing a cheaper alternative to the typical recycling and trash removal services. You can schedule the DC Trash Collection service days of your choice in Washington DC and we provide you with a trash collection bin and/or recycling receptacle.
365 days a year. That’s how committed All-purpose cleanup team members are to improving our planet. From the driver who picks up the recycling to the teammate who prepares the bale to be sent off to be turned into a new product, our team of environmental stewards is always working for a sustainable tomorrow.
While waste reduction and recycling rights are always vital, the months of October and November historically place a larger focus on sustainable initiatives across Washington.
Our investments in new facilities and improved technology set us up to successfully handle an increase in volumes from our great customers that are recycling right, the technology, and behind-the-scenes insight allow us to process the highest quality material through an efficient process.”
